@TheKeenanBoy, everyone loves him for what?? are you freakin' nuts? the guy went into enemy's territory and won 1 st prize!! pollack didn't do it, browning didn't do it. van cliburn DID you idiot. he is a hero and a great pianist. maybe you don't like him personally? maybe you are so jealous you are ready to blow up? tough shit! get a life. would ya?
I've always deeply admired Van Cliburn. His recordings mesmerized me as a teenager. I have heard him live at different intervals in my life, sometimes in recital, sometimes with orchestras. It probably is unfair to hold anyone to superstellar levels of achievement for the remainder of their lives. When he was at his prime, his piano playing was profoundly beautiful and powerful. He has done much for the piano world, in addition to his wonderful legacy of recordings. Thank you, Van Cliburn!
yes this a real musician.... it was for a good reason richter gave him the highest not at the competition. His rachmaninoff performance was convincing (3rd concerto) .
Thank you so much, valmusic! I was jumping around YouTube, listening to Tito Schipa, Celtic Woman, Bessie Smith, Toscanini---just barely one minute into this Cliburn post and my entire body is responding in orgasmic shimmers. I have very definite physical responses to the "irreducible quality of music genius". No fancy words. Just from the guts, from the heart, from the soul: Thank you.
Cliburn is the one for our generation! I've heard Rubinstein and Horowitz in person. They were absolutely wonderful beyond words and played with great passion, but Cliburn calls you to humility and tears of joy.
Bloody Godly! The best rendition I have ever heard! Soulful like a bluesman! The melody is 'sung' with the phrasing of jazz singer, to the 'straight' band which is the accompaniment. To me, all his interpretations are superior to Horowitz and Rubenstein. Their phrasing is inferior.
You have hit the nail squarely on the head, scrotecles! Cliburn was one of the most imaginative musicians whoever played the piano, and he also had a golden tone; he lived and breathed the music of everything he played. Whereas Rubinstein could be square and dull and Horowitz could be perverse and eccentric, Cliburn always moved me to tears with his magnificent musicality and imagination.
I think any of us at 74 might have diminished capabilities...lol. But I definately feel certain pieces of music were written for certain people... this piece for Van Cliburn (along with Tchaikovsky's 1st), Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto was written for Horowitz... but even Horowitz's performance with Zubin Mehta when he was quite old was far from perfect, but his interpretation will still be unmatched regardless of how many wrong notes he (or Van Cliburn) play... age will play with all of us
Van Cliburn will someday be regarded by the world as the greatest pianist that ever lived. His skill is unmatched by anyone who ever played the piano.
What I mean his octave passages are electrifying, he can produce a tremendous volumn and variety of tone and by the same token he could make a magnificent impression as a master of rubato and pianissimos as the great virtuosos of the past. His musical phraseology the feeling of restraint is superb. Yes, he is indeed in my opinion the best ever. But, of course I am no expert. It's only what I believe.
a little disappointed with Van Cliburn's performance of the Tchaikovosky at the Mahaffey Theater here in Tampa Florida. I guess I expected to much from a man of 74.

Another sloppy/lazy Texan. His peers (Pollack and Browning) were superior pianists and everyone loves this guy for what? The way I understand it, his mommy even tied his shoelaces for him at Julliard.

I have to say the Van Cliburn of today is not at all the Van Cliburn of 1958. I saw him recently play the Tchaikovsky and in no way does it compare to what he did 40 years ago. The skill has been somewhat dimished.
Rucamont, he'll be 74 in a few weeks. In March 2008, the Cliburn Foundation celebrated the 50the anniversary of his winning the Tchaikovsky Competition.
Age, does it change anything? And even a beautiful face, is it the skin deep or the spirituality, sensitivity and values coming through... Oh, well, I'm a woman, some of us see things in a different way. To me, boring is old and ugly.
Thank you for this example of the artist that so many both respect and hold in close regard. I presume Vaimusic is reasonable in what they show here. Thanks
Sheer genius. An incredible artist who will always be my favorite concert pianist. Van, you play like an angel. God bless you. Forever your biggest fan.
The rock trio I was drumming for had to follow this guy on live TV, on The Nick Clooney Show, in 1971. Tough act to follow.

Why the greatest? What do you mean by 'skill', what does it encompass?
