Hopefully all the large pet store chains will submit a list of their suppliers and all will be investigated. If the retail price of puppies goes up to prevent future cruelty, then it is certainly worth it to the millions of real dog lovers in this country. I am sure that if people were aware of the origins of the puppies that they purchase, they would be as repulsed as I am in seeing these videos. Good work Humane Society.

I always adopt. for a few reasons,

1. I know it's odd...But I really hate the puppy/kitten-hyper-stage. This can be avoided by adopting one that is all growed up already :)

2. I worked in a major chain bigbox petstore for several years. I know what happens behind the scenes, I know where the animals come from, because I have seen it with my own eyes. The puppy mills are not the only concern. There is more. Much more.

I'm not understanding where exactly you laid out this plan which would eliminate the need for shelters? The only way to do this really is to enforce a spay/neuter law. Even still there is no way to eliminate the need altogether cuz there are still going to be ppl who don't spay/neuter and who abandon their pets. But I do want to say while a lil off subject, I have a friend who's Mom shows dogs and I have been told that many show dogs are inbred and that some breed and breed champions to the point that if they breed them again the dog will die. Oh and I also wanted to say that just because a dog is purebred you can't rely on that alone to tell you what the dogs temperament will be. You have to look at who is raising the dog, what experiences the dog has had in life whether good or bad. Its just like Pits ppl think they are all mean and vicious. If I eat a chicken, cow or pig I prefer it be free range, the animal should have a good life prior to slaughter. If people want to have pets then there should be and are standards but as those requirements increase so does the cost of raising & breeding the animals & here we go again then you have to pay more for the animal. There is always less than perfect situations for breeding dogs. The female in heat bleeds & cannot be kept in the house, she legally must be in containment.

It is sickening indeed, LimeGirl. The worst part is that there are many purebred dogs in shelters. The shelter I volunteer at had some Rhodesian Ridgebacks (an exotic breed) a few months ago. People have no idea just how many great dogs and cats are waiting for a good home in animal shelters. All they see is a puppy in a pet store window and they remain ignorant as to where that puppy came from; in doing so they contribute to the puppy mill supply & demand.

Above is purely an example of greed: they don't need to be raising animals like that. PETA and humane society fight for the rights of life for animals. I think it's like trying to stuff a barn with as many cows or chicken as you can in order to save space, make them fat (b/c they have no room to move around), inject them with fattening medicine, etc. in order to make as much money possible whilst spending little as possible.

Similarly, dogs should be cared for, given room to run, they should be petted and loved (they naturally love ppl), kept in a clean environment, given clean water. The ppl running puppy mill-- it's all for the money.

Yes. The point of the mill is to make the most money with the least overhead. That means confined spaces, malnourishment, lack of proper veterinary care, and female dogs bred until they are dead or of no breeding use. Puppy mill operators sell to pet stores such (no reputable breeder would sell to a store). The owners of the pet stores know exactly where the dogs come from and will lie to potential buyers to make a sale. The puppies are nothing more than products to be sold.

It takes dogs and constantly breed them, often forcing the female dogs to get pregnant as soon as they can just to take their puppies also as soon as it is possible, sometimes even sooner. People sell them and they get good money for them. They invent stories of "abandoned" puppies and "adoption fees" to sell them, or they sell them to pet stores. It's a huge business that pays off very well but is HIGHLY unethical and beyond cruel.
