Even this method seems pretty clever to me to be honest. It gave me the idea to try the same thing using constrain-to-cluster, and I think the constraint method might be quicker (since you're only using one type of constraint, you can just middle-click the constraint panel and then select the points you want for the constraint).
It would be much faster by using snap (CTRL) to surface and adjust it afterward.Also utilizing top and side views,not so much perspective/user view.

I have just started scripting in Softimage but I think this could be achieved. Not completely sure, though.
