  • omg lol. Not allowed to say that? people need to chill

  • I just love Carey Mulligan's face after he drops the word.

  • By explaining what he means without using a curse word he actually comes across as being more explicit. Refn is fantastic

  • @flowersalexander I agree :)

  • He is not really swearing. Swearing would mean to use the word to enhance a point or to talk down on something, but in this matter he used it as a synonym for sex, wich it actually is.

  • why do you feel sorry for the guy, i wish I was the guy

  • Please more people will be outraged that this film wasn't nominated for best picture for the Oscars...

  • well, what the f***. The two phrases he uses to make his point gives us exactly the same connotations. 'Sex' and 'Fuc****' are just two different words for the same thing. ONLY difference is the word itself. So what's the fucking problem?

  • @peterbirkemose

thats like...the greatest point......idk. politically correct bullshit thats what :P

  • i'm sure more people would have been outraged if the movie wasnt so damn awesome!

  • violence is like making love to a beautiful woman

  • lmao ''sexual build up'' he should have done air quotes

  • The pain in Carey's face makes this so hard to watch. Surely the producers should of briefed him quickly

  • He was a bit dumb for swearing like that lol.. on the topic at hand.. I learn a lot from this guy. He's totally right about the build up thing. Violence in itself in movies is just a magic trick. We know it's fake and there's no feeling behind it. The violence in Drive actually had an effect on me, because of his talents

  • the f word the word the f word how dare you take him away. he really is a fantastic director

  • its abit like FUCKING

  • Its just a fucking word jesus christ

  • I'M SO OFFEN- oh wait I'm not. Because I'm not a prudish 40 something house wife.

  • LOLOLL

  • I love Carey's response to the swear word - classic...

Like someone stabbed her in the back...

  • Gotta love Refn, most chilled out director ever.

  • Refn just fucked the BBC.

  • What inconsiderate dickheads commenting below saying they are too soft. British people are probably the most down to earth people you will meet.

This was 9 AM in the morning when people are getting ready for school and work. If you think that is acceptable language then you're out of order and should get your head examined, regardless of whether this guy is a great director or not.

I've seen Drive and it is a great film, but still, totally the wrong use of language nontheless.

  • @JPotential Well said! It's broadcast standard, taken directly from the beeb's editorial guidelines:

'We must not include strong language before the watershed, or on radio when children are particularly likely to be in our audience, or in online content likely to appeal to a significant proportion of children, unless it is justified by the context. Even then, frequent use must be avoided.'

There is no argument, full stop.

  • @JPotential what kinda country 'gets ready for school' at 9 ... by then Ive been at work for 2 hours...

  • @MultiObligation yeah shut it

  • its fucking prudish really.

  • Comment removed

  • violence is like sex but not on breakfast hours

  • @TheChar1983 Just from seeing interviews with him, he seems to have mild autism or something along the lines. He doesn't have any social niceties and is very eccentric in the way he acts, so maybe that's why

  • @BlackOut0189 he's a genuis.

  • @lockide Yes, he is certainly a genuis

  • @MultiObligation With your belligerent remark you've made me quite the pedantic. For the time is 9:10am if you were unaware, by which time all people with average jobs and children would be in school. Without nit-picking I'd say your remark was sparked by patriotic zest... which is quite unbecoming to me seeing as the argument appears, once scrutinized, to be nothing more than a simple retort sparked by rash indignation. So for our mutual well-being your remark will be ignored.

  • @Macunator well said!

  • hahaha!

  • lmao is right Nicolas

  • Look at that expression Mulligan has when she hears what Refn said. Priceless. And watch the guy's face between 0:13-0:17. It's like "Ooops, what did I say? Sorry."

  • Oops! Mulligan!

  • Typical Danish liberalism vs Stiff-lipped English censorship

  • Good for a chuckle, I guess. Though, I thought swearing was kosher on BBC.

  • @yojimbo81 not 9am lol

  • @0:12 carey is like "nooooooo"

  • loool so silly. You can tell Nic found it tedious too.

  • swearing is like fucking. the bigger deal you make out of it, the bigger deal it is to you.

    let the man fucking speak

  • @lovetownsend haha im with you

  • No biggie.

  • Don't say "fucking". Only six-year old children, on Xbox Live, can say "fucking".

  • Love Careys reaction

  • LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL I love this guy!

  • Winding Refn is FUCKING talented!

  • british faggots...and Im british

  • @viralfunnies

    And a faggot?

  • British people are so fucking soft..I have trouble working with these soft middle class wankers myself...it's like they grew up with no hardship in their lives

  • @viralfunnies - You have obviously been working with the previlaged middle class a lot of us have had a hard backgroud just trying to survive day to day we are not all over educated twats.

  • @kew4612 that's what I mean..I grew up in a rough estate on Glasgow, now I work in London, and there is definitely a cultural difference between someone like me and the english middle class..they are too soft, emotionally distant, repressed and offended way way too easily...it basically tells me they grew up with a silver spoon in their ass, and I can't stand it

  • This director is very talented, love both Bronson and Drive....

  • FUCKING

  • haha, i would've loved to have seen this live ! ... and on the discussion of 'fuck the bbc' - it wouldn't matter if it was the bbc or any other broadcaster, there's a watershed for a reason.

  • @patrickplsxo Bullshit. In places where people are allowed to have mature opinions, a single word doesn't matter. Britain is still in the Dark Ages.

  • @metamorphiclouds ... it's breakfast television. i'd love to know what mainstream channels allow swearing from 6am?! having an opinion and saying fuck are two completely different things... i can only assume that you have linked not being able to swear before 9pm on national TV to not being able to have a 'mature opinion' which is ridiculous since the director is still able to express himself perfectly well by replacing 'fucking' with 'sex'. not even going to start on the dark ages thing...

  • @patrickplsxo Lot of places do, especially many countries in Europe, where they even show nudity and sex in morning programs. Oh my lord, they used "fuck" - what are we going to do? "Fucking" is also not the same word as sex, and the former has a far more powerful connotation. Also, how is saying "fuck" wrong and allowing racist spiel on air (David Starkey) correct? The recent London riots are ample evidence of Britain's lost priorities.

  • @metamorphiclouds there has to be a line or a 'standard' in programming just as there are certifications on films to protect people. it's unfair to presume that what you think is acceptable language is what everyone else wants to hear. i agree that sometimes things like are restraining but thats when programming after 9 comes in; there are always going to be fuck ups (starkey)... the london riots were a TINY percentage of youth population that quite clearly don't represent the entire nation.

  • @patrickplsxo The fact is, you're completely ignoring Britain's social problems (e.g. the divide between the rich and the poor) by simply associating it to a "tiny" percentage (if they were really so "tiny", look at the damage that was inflicted, not tiny in the slightest, was it?). By prioritizing a completely minor issue like language (oh goodness gracious me, the world will break apart if that word is used), you're ignoring the real issues at hand. That is why the riots happened as they did.

  • @metamorphiclouds Also, in Refn's case, he is a director and a creative artist. Since he *chose* to use the word "fucking", rather than "sex" (which as I said does not have the same connotation), that's his creative choice, because he felt that word does a better job at describing what he was going for. By stifling his usage of the word, you're stifling artistic freedom.

  • @metamorphiclouds you are mis-informed on so many levels. britain has its problems like ALL countries. no matter where you are, there are social inequalities and injustics in the governing systems. the riots were an overflow of weak minded teens who were more interested in stealing tracksuits and tv's than 'fighting' for reason (which was illogical anyway). language is power, the sickness and cure to all problems. riots have literally fuck all to do with the bbc swearing policy...

  • @patrickplsxo Again, if you think that was the main reason for the riots, you're either in self-denial (a plausible theory) or again, clearly ignoring the major social problems that have merged due to rampant unemployment and social discord. Tell me, where did the riots first start? Yes, at an "estate". How did these emerge? Again, THESE are important issues that if are not addressed, will emerge again. Language is irrelevant. Did it cure the effects of colonialism and disease in India & Africa?

  • @metamorphiclouds in two weeks time my parents are told if they have lost their jobs to david cameron's 'big society' - there is no bubble. i am experiencing the social ills of this country like everyone else so please don't assume that i take the bbc's word as gospel. the entire corporation has a reputation that they want to hold on to - a reliable source of wholesome goodness i'm sure but this isn't because the nation asked for it. regarding starkey, the bbc didn't apologise but this seems to

  • @metamorphiclouds assuming that you aren't from england (the riots weren't across great britain), i wouldn't expect you to understand the realities of the people who were a part of the riots. one crime exploded into a frenzy of teens with nothing better to do than trash their own towns. as an english teenager myself i found it disgusting to watch and am offended that people around the world believe this was a majority movement that caused a negative opinion that you obviously agree with.

  • @patrickplsxo Again, majorities and minorities are not the case here, and you've completely failed to get the point of my post if you think that's the case. Even if a supposed minority caused such carnage, and yes, all across England, the EFFECTS were not minor, were they? You may enjoy living in a bubble, but the people who're experiencing the brunt of this don't.

  • @patrickplsxo Also, on the Starkey incident, I find it interesting that the BBC and its presenters did not react with the same disdain to Starkey's racist comments (in fact, I'm not even sure they apologized? they didn't, did they?) like they've done here. An outrageous pilfering of priorities. I've lived in several countries including the UK so I know full well of the dinosaur-like status of the BBC, remnants of a broken, failed system.

  • @patrickplsxo And if you prefer restricting it to a regional discussion that only "people from England" (i wonder who defines this?) can comment on - lots of English commentators and media personages, including Ken Loach etc. (google his interviews with the Guardian on the matter) have pointed out the major issues from the riot i.e. the rampant social problems at the heart of the issue.

  • @metamorphiclouds stem from meer 70 people that complained. however, i agree with you that there should be something made of it. in this situation (live breakfast tv), the presenters are surely briefed to react/deal swiftly with anything that they don't want so maybe that's why it seems so ridiculous? safe to say i feel like i've lost the argument, you seem like a clever guy but generalisations are a bad thing... cheers for the food for thought.

  • @patrickplsxo I'm sorry to hear about your parents losing their jobs, and apologise for the hasty generalisation - that wasn't my intent. You do make a valid point that it was a live TV recording, and the presenters probably aren't at fault; they'd have a lot of angry mothers on their case who'd watched in horror as he said those words, I'd imagine. It's just that Refn is probably used to it back home, and it was a classic cultural misunderstanding (a la Todd Margaret).

  • @metamorphiclouds well said my good sir..I am sick of this fucking soft ridiculous country..too fucking soft the lot of them

  • What an idiot. Some people how no idea about what words to use.

  • @dxutube Yes, "some people how no idea about what words to use".

  • @BrideAndGroomFilmsHD HAHAHAH did I put that?!??!? "Have"!!!

  • The BBC are a bunch of outdated, uptight jollywogs who need a good ole "fucking."

  • It would have been fucking hilarious if he said it a second time :D

  • hahahahahahah

  • Another reason to like this guy :D

  • I LOVE Nic

  • LOL!!!

  • I say FUCK BBC!

  • @leandrolefa .. me too man ! fuck all the BBC staff

  • hahahaha i bet he was mad sooped that he thot he could curse in the UK, has face lit up before he said it too

  • I watched this LIVE ! WOOHOO!

  • by the way this was at 9am if it was 9pm it would have been fine. haha still funny as fuck though

  • Oh my fellow Americans how fucking ignorant we can be... We have far stricter TV language censoring here then they do in the UK. Absolutely loved "Drive" by the way "beautifully brutal" sums it up pretty well in my opinion. Counting the days until the DVD drops.

  • LOL Sexual Buildup.. Aw Bless Him x

  • What the hell? It's like being in school and the teacher asks you to redo a sentence! I can't believe their reaction, how childish and awkward! What's going on in the UK? Hipocrites.

  • Saying 'fuck' is less explicit than saying 'sexual build up', if you can't handle an artist expressing himself why have him on the show.

  • It's in the morning and they don't want kids hearing it, that's why they don't allow swearing. Nothing about being prudish, just about being polite. So fuck off all you cunts who are launching attacks against the British because of it.

  • @martang66 In that case, they should stop sending their kids to schools.

  • @Kemikaza84 I should hope they wouldn't be hearing it from their adult role models in school

  • @martang66 No, but from all the other students. Nikolas Refn is not a role model, he is not there to please anybody, he is there representing himself as an artist.

  • Comment removed

  • @martang66 Well said. YouTube is full of opinionated morons.

  • @martang66 By the way, love the way you talk about being polite and watch your language and then you finish your comment with: "So fuck off all you cunts who are launching attacks against the British because of it." HAHA! "Fuck off"? "Cunts?" Are you aware that there are children in Youtube also? Double standard! You should start practising what you preach, then I would might be able to respect your point of view. Hope you're not going to participate in the show, they will ban you!

  • @Kemikaza84 I was making a point, dear. Also, do you know I'm not a child? You've managed to entirely miss my point...it is ADULTS who should be role models for children, as a general rule - I'm not suggesting Mr Refn is going to replace Barney any time soon!

  • @poonus2 I know, but the BBC network has always been picky about this kind of thing. Really oldies hate it. It's not exactly hard to not swear anyway.

  • Hahaha! Typical Brits and Americans! Calm down guys, it's just a word used in a totally decent and harmless context! Why did they put focus on that word if it was sooo bad? They could just have ignored it and let the guy finish the sentence and get his message through. But no, because they felt too uncomfortable and when he continued talking and using the word SEX, you could tell that the male host felt really uncomfortable and just wanted it to end, saying: mhmm mhm, like enough enough! Akward!

  • Comment removed

  • What a fucked up world where freedom of speech is non-existent and everything is censured away. The hosts were ackward and offensive in their reactions to this! Why couldn't they just let it go!? He is an artist, in his homecountry he can swear on TV and no one notice it. It was not an accident, he just wanted to make that expression to comunicate his message. Stop interviewing and asking artists questions if they are not allowed to give an honoust answer just because people are so sensitive!

  • Hahaha fuck it.

  • Look, the guy slipped up. He's a young, hip artist not used to sitting around and having pleasant chats on family talk shows. His natural instinct was to speak his mind. Granted, the word is offensive, but it was not his intention to hurt anyone.

And to the prudes out there overreacting, why are you so wound up over the use of this one offensive word when your precious children are exposed to images of horrific violence not only on the news but on the other 500 channels, TV, and video games?

  • I think only British people are going to understand why this is a big deal (well maybe not only), this is shown on the biggest channel in the UK, everyone watches BBC 1. And this is directly after Children's programs. The UK isn't full of prudes or anything, far from. After 9pm UK TV can show whatever the fuck it wants :) That's just the rules for TV here. Not exactly hard to follow.

  • @dirtzonline your kids swear too

  • lol. Who cares. The worst part is how they tried to speak to him like he's a child. Typically stuffy BBC hypocrites.

  • Can you turn the embedd back on?

  • Wow, even the UK has their hang ups now...

  • @thewildbunch12 in fairness, swearing on the BBC at 09.09AM is a bit much.

  • I will never understand why people are so offended by curse words.

  • Oh well, at least all the kids were at school.

    Drive was amazing.

  • He's been hanging around Guillermo Del Toro too much, haha.

  • this put me off my Breakfast

  • The guy is a true genius. He did fucked up that time though... Aw ! Sorry...:D

  • Ohh my he fell into the culture gap...mind the gap!!

  • Fuck fucking cunt shit sick minning ass tits. get over it, it's just words, letters arranged in a specific order.

  • @ABEJOHNDERDANSER You are the sunshine glue to my heart boat.

  • In danish tv you can say just about aything ;)

  • Made me feel awkward

  • He is Danish and nobody would care if he said it here. But he does not seem to be doing it to be dick though.

  • This guy is a moron, why would you say that on BBC Breakfast?!

  • I'm guessing they were supposed to cut to the presenters when he swore, instead of Nicolas! #LOL

  • What kid is watching BBC Breakfast at 9am anyway?

  • What a don.

  • OH MY GOD I can't believe he swore on a news show I mean don't people know every child IN THE WORLD watches this program?!

  • @TinnedWaffles Haha :P

  • @TinnedWaffles ....every child in the world?

  • what a boss

  • This guy was too relaxed. Like a boss.

  • I'm British and I couldn't care less that he swore. The amount of swearing we are all exposed to anyway is far worse than a minor mishap on BBC Breakfast.

  • The way they reacted, I thought they were going to shoot him.

  • I want to know why the owner felt sorry for him.. Just wanna know :P

  • LOL

  • seriously what an idiot

  • Meh. Oh well.

  • who gives a fuck?

  • This programme plays during the morning. Obviously it is a big deal because in the UK there are specific laws that restrict any swearing etc before 9pm. But then again he didn't realise so it is kind of ok. Just a downfall of doing a show live.

  • awkkkkkwarddddd

  • Who watches TV anymore, teh internetz ftw.

  • @TopmanSte if you use internet then you will become stupid

  • 0:11 she lke ' OH LORD NOOOO'

  • publicity stunt

  • haha I don't think they have much censorship in central European countries. When I went to Amsterdam they had hardcore porn on normal TV in the afternoon.

  • dumb american, as if they are ok with swearing on a morning show in the states.

  • @DrChitta He is from Denmark

  • @DrChitta American? He is Danish, and here no one cares, get your facts straight before you trash people.

  • SORRY WINDING, TRUE THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS AREN'T ALLOWED ON TV MADE FOR GERIATRICS PAST THEIR TIME

  • what an arsehole

  • @Blahblah9942 wow..........finally someone else feels the way that i feel...

  • violence and fucking...wait. WHAT?

  • Violence....Violence...Violence...Violence

    "Fucking"

Oh no you can't say that. Just talk about the violence at 9:00am in the fucking morning

  • @WorldsTrollestTroll I know, it's pathetic.

  • lol

  • Who cares. Its just a word! People need to grow up

    fuuuuccccckkkkkkkkk....

  • @officialvangcreative you are obviously one of the lower intelligent individuals that I have told my children use the word as they cannot express themselves without it. You clearly didn't read and/or understand what I wrote. of course I am bringing my children up to live in the real world-the way i was brought up-to have respect for others and myself without feeling the need to use foul language. Your 'well off' comment underlines this-is that really what is important?

  • @meshfield oh my god... grow the hell up, it's a fucking word.

  • Who the FCK cares. Good man Refn! Great film.

  • The word fuck is used by every single person on the surface of the planet, but you can't say it on television in the UK and in the US... two countries who claim to be the most developed in the world.

Really, we're closing in on 2012. It's not the fucking middle ages. People are starving to death, being tortured, children are dying of aids - and the victorian UK and US is worried about the F word not being broadcast in the media? Er... priorities, people!!!!!!

  • @officialvangcreative your a weirdo

  • The news presenters are like stuffy catholic parents.

  • @shrapn0 true, but they were probably told to apoligise by their bosses

  • So he can't say fuck, but can talk about sex?

  • Carey's reaction is almost as good, albeit more painful, than the female newscaster in the "Keep fucking that chicken" clip.

  • Well I am all up for freedom of speech, I say fuck all the time, but still I have to question Nicolas' sense or lack of. He really didn't know not to say that on an BBC breakfast show? Did he forgot what time of day it was or something? or did he fail to realize that breakfast shows are live at breakfast?

  • @Adammarketis Perfectly put mate.. I'm sure there was a touch of arrogance to his appearance, as it came across like he didn't really care for his surroundings... I have to say, I love the odd F Bomb... But to say, like most people are saying here that "Oh, its just a word" is just stupid...
