I am skeptical that ITER will provide practical fusion reactor technology. There are many big problems to be solved, and it wont be able to run steady-state. Its merely a pulsed machine.

That is mostly accredited by the fact that A: it's the best design for fusion power as of yet and B. because technology grows at an exponential rate. Ten years ago fusion was kind of an absent idea, and ten years from now means more like twenty in terms of technological development. And of all things, power is one that has great minds at it's side.
@Ichvyenichalster ITER is designed to be a pulsed machine, with pulses up to 480 seconds. Thats not useful for power. And the first wall problem: in order to be a useful, practical reactor, huge quantities of 14MeV neutrons must be produced, which damage the walls of the reactor and render them highly radioactive. Its a problem not likely to be solved in a cost-effective manner, IMO. One a few, specific types of technology develop exponentially, like microelectronics.

The world is making a big mistake putting all fusion research funding into the tokamak design. Other approaches to fusion (e.g. electrostatic confinement/polywell) should be funded.

Fusion is the only solution that will provide the world's energy needs without costs to the environment. Viable means of producing power with fusion are being ignored and nearly ALL research funds are being plowed into a system that cannot ever work. Tokamak reactors, despite having decades of research and billions of dollars spent have never delivered 1 watt of power and never will. All known fusion reactors (stars) are spherical, none are doughnut shaped (Toroidal). Polywell fusion works in a similar way to a star and despite showing great promise it recieves no funding and never will.
ChrisPCrunchy should not be misunderstood. He talks about the underfunded polywell fusion research project which has shown great promise toward a very simple and cheap and working fusion technology. The US Navy stopped funding it, because it would compete with other navy funded fusion projects that are not going very well.
This problem was solved in 2007. Polywell fusion has received more funding, and is on a fast track to go way beyond what ITER fusion will ever provide in just a few years.
Good news the future is looking brighter already. One thing worrys me though as polywell can be implimented on a very small scale as well as large scale the energy cartells and governments who they own are not going to like this. Hope this doesnt stop progress.

Tokamak cant be tested/implimented on a small scale.Why because the expansion of the plasma during fusion means that the size of the reactor will always have to be large to allow acceptable clearance so the sides of the reaction chamber wont ment down.This is the exactly why Tokamak cant work.Allowing room for expansion reduces plasma density limiting atomic collisions that cause fusion.Spherical confinement means that near 50%of expansion is directed inward increasing pressure and collisions.
Magnetic confinement of plasma is synonymous with hair standing upright on a 3D shape which needs to be combed down flat, without leaving a parting, in order for confinement to be complete (a parting being synonymous with a weakness in the magnetic field); this is where the torus is favourable over the sphere, if you comb the hair down flat on a torus in the direction of the plasma flow, then there is no parting and no inherent weakness in confinement.

That is mostly accredited by the fact that A: it's the best design for fusion power as of yet and B. because technology grows at an exponential rate. Ten years ago fusion was kind of an absent idea, and ten years from now means more like twenty in terms of technological development. And of all things, power is one that has great minds at it's side.

@Ichvyenichalster ITER is designed to be a pulsed machine, with pulses up to 480 seconds. Thats not useful for power. And the first wall problem: in order to be a useful, practical reactor, huge quantities of 14MeV neutrons must be produced, which damage the walls of the reactor and render them highly radioactive. Its a problem not likely to be solved in a cost-effective manner, IMO. One a few, specific types of technology develop exponentially, like microelectronics.

The world is making a big mistake putting all fusion research funding into the tokamak design. Other approaches to fusion (e.g. electrostatic confinement/polywell) should be funded.

If I were in charge I'd be pumping whatever money was necessary into this research; I've read a few articles that express concern that the costs of ITER will now top (I think) £13bn, but in the grand scheme of things that's bugger all. London will spend something similar on the Olympics, which you have to admit is not quite as important as solving the problem of powering the world, permanently.

Fusion is very safe and very clean, unlike fission. The radiation can only exist at high temperatures, so if by some chance the radiation leaks out of a plan, it would immediately be neutralized due to the colder temperatures outside of the plant. And fusion generates a ridiculous amount of energy. I'd say from what I've read, probably a few hundred fusion plants could power all of America. I may be optimistic, but I have a feeling that fusion power is coming soon. Maybe as soon as 50 years

Focus Fusion and EST are much more promising because these confinement concepts rely on the plasma itself to generate its own magnetic containment field. The magnetic field strengths possible in this way are several orders of magnitude larger than anything that can be generated using external magnets.

It uses energy the entire time. 10 to 1 ratio would be more than enough to produce endless amounts of cheap energy. As of today, this ratio is less than 1 to 1 (net loss). This is the so called "Energy profit ratio". For instance, today, on average, it takes the energy of one barrel of oil to get ten barrels of oil (ratio of 10 to 1) . Difference is that fuel for fusion is literally inexhaustible for millions of years while oil supply has probably already peaked.

The fusion energy gain factor (q) should be over 20 from what I´ve read to "overcome" (can´t think of a better word) the energy input needed to sustain the reaction. The DEMO reactor is supposed to have 25 (if built).

You cannot say "ever will", unless you can predict the future. Because the stars are spherical, and not toroidal - why would it matter. Fusion is the only solution that will provide the world's energy needs without costs to the environment. The sooner we focus on making fusion work rather than dressing up the edges with renewables the better.

Confining plasma in a spherical form directs its expansion as it fuses inwardly and as the matter nearer the center is hotter and more likely to fuse the extra pressure as a fusion reaction begins make it more probable that fusion will increase . I agree 100% Fusion is the key to all our energy needs. Fusion of Boron leaves no nuclear waste, No greenhouse gasses and near unlimited energy.

Viable means of producing power with fusion are being ignored and nearly ALL research funds are being plowed into a system that cannot ever work. Tokamak reactors, despite having decades of research and billions of dollars spent have never delivered 1 watt of power and never will. All known fusion reactors (stars) are spherical, none are doughnut shaped (Toroidal). Polywell fusion works in a similar way to a star and despite showing great promise it recieves no funding and never will.

ChrisPCrunchy should not be misunderstood. He talks about the underfunded polywell fusion research project which has shown great promise toward a very simple and cheap and working fusion technology. The US Navy stopped funding it, because it would compete with other navy funded fusion projects that are not going very well.
This problem was solved in 2007. Polywell fusion has received more funding, and is on a fast track to go way beyond what ITER fusion will ever provide in just a few years.

apparently its cheaper safer and we have throughly tested this technology on a small scale, ive also thought about the fact that the stars are spherical and why they just dont go on some concept like that but actual stars also release huge amounts of radiation and this vessel though it makes radioactive waste 95% of it is absorbed into the vessel and its half life is only about 100 years until it can be saftly disposed of, im out of space so if you repost ill say more

Tokamak cant be tested/implimented on a small scale.Why because the expansion of the plasma during fusion means that the size of the reactor will always have to be large to allow acceptable clearance so the sides of the reaction chamber wont ment down.This is the exactly why Tokamak cant work.Allowing room for expansion reduces plasma density limiting atomic collisions that cause fusion.Spherical confinement means that near 50%of expansion is directed inward increasing pressure and collisions.

Magnetic confinement of plasma is synonymous with hair standing upright on a 3D shape which needs to be combed down flat, without leaving a parting, in order for confinement to be complete (a parting being synonymous with a weakness in the magnetic field); this is where the torus is favourable over the sphere, if you comb the hair down flat on a torus in the direction of the plasma flow, then there is no parting and no inherent weakness in confinement.
