when ever i start to lose my faith in mankind; i come to a frank marino youtube video and marvel at how many people there are out there who know quality when they see it afterall.god bless you people, you give me strenth to csrry on
Many blast him for being a Jimi clone......1st of all he has a boat load of his own stuff and what's astonishing is how good he plays the songs of one of the grand master guitar players of all time. Just who the hell can play Jimi's stuff better than Frank? I don't care who you are (I'm a Blues nut!) when you hear Blues just grindin' your gut like this then I don't care if I hear it a 1000 times.....it's soul bending gut bucket brother!!!!!!
Obviously, a very jazz influenced player. Even the progression is loaded with 3-6-2-5's, and Frank's playing is much more than simply beating pentatonics to death. You can hear whole tone scales, and altered runs and a lot of melodic variation that shows that he is accomplished in jazz and uses it in some kick-ass rock and roll and in this case, blues.
A player that is very underrated by many guitarists (in UK anyway). He has great technical command that goes unnoticed cos he plays mainly blues-rock, where technique isn't always the main concern.
I've been a fanof Franks since the begining...Every young and up-and comming guitarist should be made to watch and listen!...It ain't gonna get any better than this!
well.. I do like Frank.. but I must say no matter who played this this in my opinion has to rank up there as one of the best Blues solos of all times.. Yes.. it is not the standard 12 bar sequence and uses another classic variation that goes to the VI.. and this helps in getting out of the rutt of the standard blues solos.. but nonetheless its briliant through and through .. I add this to my list of "Best of" stuff.. which Frank already is on for "Johnny b Good" and "All Along the Watchtower".
First saw Frank Marino in 1978. To date, Every kid who plays the guitar that I have introduced Frank to, have become instant fans. Trust me, the kids know good stuff when they hear it! Thank God!!!!!
I remember in '79 in a packed convention center in Dallas, this cat blew everyone away including myself. I was 22 then and still my favorite. Man, whatever happened to rock n roll? The stuff today doesn't even touch them good ol' days...WOW, what memories!
Damn, Normandie Theatre, Two Mountains Quebec, 1971, or 72. 15 years old and fell in love with the blues........... ain't 15 anymore, but still love the blues
This was a great show ! Whoever filmed this must have been pretty close to me , I was right at Frank's feet throughout the show . One of the all time greats on guitar . I love the Granada Theater ! Met Frank after the show and thought he was a real nice guy and he even answered questions I asked him about his guitars .
Why would he be a SRV clone? Frank Marino and Mahogony Rush was around before anyone ever heard of the other guy. But, unfortunately, being Canadian, a lot of Americans never heard of him. SRVwould be lucky to be able to be Frank's clone.
About the SG, are you sure it's a LP? As for what i know, he withdrew himself from Gibson when they modified his version of it .. didnt know (if) there was any "real" LP designed SG's .. oh well :)
I just heard this guy for the 1st time on one of the Sirius stations. Classic Vinyl I think. I never heard of him before. Came home and looked him up. Great sound.
there was a time he played I think it was roanoke Virginia the wammy bar went limp so he went into little town of bethlaham while the stage hands fixed the wammy bar and didnt miss a beat
Frank Marino is one of my heros along with the many great blues players. God did the right thing when he provided the world with people who can play the blues on guitar.
I think Frank's is pretty much my favorite cover of the song. I have the whole thing on a CD, it's just brilliant. I also love love love Gary Moore's version, as well as Johnny Winter's. Oh he's playing an SG. I'm sure if you look on You Tube long enough you'll hear Red House played on a semi-hollow :)
Damn... so good. Wonderful and refreshing to hear some one who isn't a Stevie Ray clone. If I hear one more SRV-style string rake, I think I'm gonna puke.
Great in terms of the accolades he so rightfully deserves! They'll (guitar mags) put anyone with a hit song on the cover, but Frank always gets reduced to a byline. Frank is one of the top greatest five blues-rockers ever, but has yet to received the credit due to his playing because he is outside the mainstream!
i've seen Frank 10 times, in concert...much more tecnical, diverse in his styles and all-round together with his instrument than SRV ever was. Frank has played "clean" many times...listen to "Real Live (2001). As far as "speed", listen to "Live '78"...than say if SRV was faster...seen them both at jarry park in '87, Frank was amazing
I have to agree with you Garry Roy on Frank's technical prowess, diversity in styles and all-around command of his instrument and music. I love SRV's music and saw SRV live 2x and both times came away disappointed. Maybe it was a low point in his career, but he just couldn't sustain the energy and anyone who doubts Frank's songwriting has to go back to the 70's and listen to Child of the Novelty, Strange Universe, Mahogany Rush IV and World Anthem recordings -
Saw them both, Frank is faster, but the effects started to grind a bit after a while.SRV had a totally clean sound and a better vibrato and i think he wrote better songs, but both good gigs.
everybody has their favorite guitarists My is Alvin Lee of TEN YEARS AFTER They are all great and we can enjoy all of them. Thats what makes them great.
I hope I don't get flamed for comparing Marino to SRV. But I think while they are very similar, SRV was much more colorful during his performances, whereas Marino is more stoic. The playing itself is similar too, but Marino puts a little more shred into his playing. That doesn't mean he is faster or cleaner than SRV, though. For SRV's style, he produced solos as clean as they can possibly be played. One other thing of note, Marino uses the pinky finger more where SRV hardly utilized 4 solos. Idk
Let me preface my comment by saying that I don't feel there is a best at anything - everyone has strengths and weaknesses. When it comes to comparing Frank Marino and SRV - I feel that Frank is a little more versatile in styles, a little more improvisational and a little less predictable than SRV. I'm not saying SRV was not versatile or improvisational, or predictable either and at this point in time Frank has more years under his belt. They both move me like many others, but Frank moves me more
I had the privilege to witness Frank backing up (drum roll)....Stevie Ray at Jarry park in Montreal June 9 1990 or 91.How can I forget that night.SRV just lost his father. Both of them gave a f...g show.I love Frank's sound
