According to Gordon Banks after he made that save, Bobby Moore walked up to him and said "Good save, but next time don't give away a corner". Even after making one of the best saves of all time, Bobby Moore was still pushing him to do better.
@TheAbstractThinker1 lol yes i have heard this aswell, pele has also said whenever he comes to england, despite scoring over 1000 goals all he is reminded of is bankes save against him,!!
I still remember that wonderful match between England and Brazil at the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara. By far, the best one of the whole tournament to me!!! It wasn't only for the miraculous save by the great Gordon Banks but also by the clash between two geniuses; Bobby Moore and Pelé! Good old days are gone and I'll always remember that Mexican afternoon in 1970. Best wishes from São Paulo, Brazil.
I think it;s important to consider that this save was made in 1970 and goalkeepers in general wre not as good as they are today. Some of them didn't even have goalkeeper gloves while playing and they weren't considered to be as important aas they are today and so there wasn't as much specialist training for them. The save was EXCEPTIONAL at the time and if you put it in context it probably is the greatest save of all time. However, many goalkeepers today would perhaps see this save as easy.
@Lugg0008 you need to get it yourself, neither Pele nor Maradona ARE THE BEST EVER!! his name says it all George Best, the pride of Ireland. Portugal and Benfica legend Eusebio said- Best was the best player in the world, not just England, and a good friend of mine. I remember one day he played against Benfica in 1966 in Lisbon, we lost 5-1 and George Best was spectacular, a genius.
@pilotl1011 best never single handedly took ireland to a world cup never mind actually winning it Maradona 86.Pele had several world class players to play with also .All top class but maradona shades it for me
@Tromeo31 why say that its bollocks yes that handball was a disgrace but you cant just conveniently overlook the rest of what he did on a pitch .Look up his compilation video of his finest moments [loads of them]
the world's greatest, shouted "Goal!" as he connected with the ball. Banks was still making his way across the line from Jairzinho's cross and in the split-second of assessment the incident allowed, it seemed impossible for him to get to the ball. He also had to dive slightly backwards and down at the same time which is almost physically impossible. Yet he hurled himself downwards and backwards and got the base of his thumb to the ball, with the momentum sending him cascading to the ground.
THat is the reason why there are dumbasses comparing messi to maradona. Today you can watch messi's goals in five different angles, there's like a fucking thousand cameras around the field. These, which might have been the best header and save ever cannot be fully appreciated because of the low quality of the technology in those times...
buffons wasn't nearly as good as this. Zidane headed it straight to Buffon - pure reflex save. Here, Banks has to cross the goal mouth, then get down for an outstretched reflex save and push it over the bar from the bottom corner. Much harder than what Buffon did.
Greatest save of all time. For those saying it was merely good, get real. There is a reason why Pele made that type of header (few people can do that intentionally), a ball headed downwards at that angle is one of the most difficult for a goalie to stop. Plus Banks was at the near post when the cross was made, and had to make his to the back post.
Seriously? I think it was. I remember someone saying that the one who did the header was known for being unstoppable, yet the keeper saved it. And I think the ball bounced first, so the keeper had to raise his arm up to swat the ball upwards while he was in mid-air, which I think is hard. :x
I think it's considered the best save ever only because it was Pele who headed the ball and it was in a World Cup. If it would have been done in a common match it would have been considered only a good save.
I actually met Gordan Banks when I was like 3 or 4 years old, I didn't have a clue who he was until I turned about 5 and started to get into football, I was like wow, I still remember the time, he was still playing for leciester city and he was in a town called loughborough at the time, at the town centre Leicester Alliance bank, me and my dad were just behind him, he apparently wave to me and shuck my hand, I was only 3 and was wondering who da hell's the man touching my hand lol, now I know =)

ya, still I prefer Higuita's save. It's like when someone asks me Maradona's best goal to be the best one in all history, I prefer Messi's goal vs getafe, everyone says and I understand that it was in a world cup, but technically out of the worldcup those goals and saves are better than those.
perhaps your right, I remember after the Higuita scorpion kick the press were going crazy about him....until some league managers said "well, actually, he's not very good"...Banks however
Also in a italian dvd with the best save in the history of football Banks is the first. You can see it at: "The Best Goalkeeper Save in the History of Soccer"
A great save indeed. Please note how Banks moved from the near post to the far one, it's just in a second. The ball bounced off the ground increased the difficulty in estimating the exact speed, angle and height it's coming. Absoultely a difficult save.
And you cant really see that, but I like what Moore said afterwards "you've gone and given em a corner!"...and Higuita's was of no consiquence (and no-one was around him), this was
Both of Moore and Banks are great players all the time. Higuita's save was not so difficult as no one was around him. Besides, he got plenty of time for thinking before the save.
Pele also said Scotland would get to the '78 World Cup. He said an African nation would win the World Cup before the 20th century ended. We're still waiting. And don't call me a tit (sorry, TIT), you arrogant little Englishman.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Because you called me a TIT, originally. But now I'm a twat. Your intimate knowledge of female biology is impressive. Working your way down to the kneecaps?
All the postings from English people list the best save, the best goal for, the best goal against, the best header, the best tackle, the best final whistle only as English-related ones. Nobody else in the world plays football, seemingly.
The '78 final, I meant, as I later wrote, having discovered my error. If you'd bothered to read on, you'd have discovered the correction. I'm more than well aware of what scotland has achieved (and not achieved).
Oh, and by the way, I'm Scottish, and don't consider it as a nazi nation. If you have other ideas, then you should back them up with argument.
Are you from Scotland? I'm a brazilian guy. I like KT Tunstall music. She's a scottish, isn't she? She is going to play here in Brazil this year (2008). That's not about football, but, you know, when we talk about music, we forget this kind of nazi-blablabla...
Pele is a kind of super hero. Banks as Aikow said, Banks was better than perfect to catch this ball. And for who thinks there wasn't nothing special here, just look at the crowd.
no save in history compares to this...although david seamens save against some gguy on sheffield united was INCREDIBLE aswell...seeing it live made it even better
i havent seen another one but how the save actually happened (i've read about it) was Gordan Banks was actually about a 1/4 of the goal away from the near post when Pele did the header; however, you can't see how quickly he moved because of the camera angle, but the pictures of it are really good.
If Banks comes for the ball Pele could have looped the ball over him...so right decision. Pele's header is perfect, headed down with some power, so Banks has a lot of distance from his left to cover, and he has to get down to the ball as it bounces up. Then he mustn't palm the ball into play as there a few players ready for a rebound; he manages to push it up over the bar. So, all in all, a brilliant save.
Good saves are rarely given credit but that was magnificent. Pele paid tribute to it, he really couldn't believe anyone could have found the ball as Banks did. What a keeper that man was.
if the so called top keepers in the premiership or the world did that it got to be shown time after time, i believe thats ace and long live Gordan Banks!!
Aruguing over what was or wasn't the best save ever misses the point. It was a magificant save made by one of the greatest goalkeepers in history against the immortal Pele. That combination makes the save iconic. I am Irish, not English, but I have always admired Gordon Banks for his modesty, sincerity and sportsmanship. You might be interested in the short presentation I had made for the launch of my book 'Gordon Banks: A Hero Who Could Fly', available on YouTube.
Yeah Lev Yashin was better than Banks, I'll admit. They didn't call him the black spider for nothing, if you ever get chance to see any rare footage of him with Russia etc. you'll see how amazing his reactions were, he was incredible.
Well, standing at the right position and having your hands in the exact right place is a hard job at itself so it's lucky but also very good work by Banks. Btw Pelé headed fantastically, no-one could have ever thought this shot would be saved.
Gordan Banks one of England best goalkeeper then Clements and Shilton came but it was the best save all time but Pele the best player of all time without a doubt im a fan of Pele but the truth is if you dont like Pele you dont like Football if you don't know Pele you dont know Football

I saw some good save from other great keepers too, but you know, it's in the world cup, and also against Pele, it might be harder than it looks
besides, the ball bounced off the floor which makes it even harder to judge the height when it comes to you.
It's legendary and great, let's not argue and just enjoy the moment.

Your not arrogant yourself then? Because your spelling is simply the best ever.

'78 World Cup Final, that should be.

scotland did get to the 1978 world cup idiot
scottl1690 3 years ago
The '78 final, I meant, as I later wrote, having discovered my error. If you'd bothered to read on, you'd have discovered the correction. I'm more than well aware of what scotland has achieved (and not achieved).
Oh, and by the way, I'm Scottish, and don't consider it as a nazi nation. If you have other ideas, then you should back them up with argument.
klickpick 3 years ago
Are you from Scotland? I'm a brazilian guy. I like KT Tunstall music. She's a scottish, isn't she? She is going to play here in Brazil this year (2008). That's not about football, but, you know, when we talk about music, we forget this kind of nazi-blablabla...

Pele is a kind of super hero. Banks as Aikow said, Banks was better than perfect to catch this ball. And for who thinks there wasn't nothing special here, just look at the crowd.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Is there another video of this save on another camera angle? Because from this point this save has nothing special about it.
marcossousa0 4 years ago
i havent seen another one but how the save actually happened (i've read about it) was Gordan Banks was actually about a 1/4 of the goal away from the near post when Pele did the header; however, you can't see how quickly he moved because of the camera angle, but the pictures of it are really good.
BloodytheEmoNub 4 years ago
If Banks comes for the ball Pele could have looped the ball over him...so right decision. Pele's header is perfect, headed down with some power, so Banks has a lot of distance from his left to cover, and he has to get down to the ball as it bounces up. Then he mustn't palm the ball into play as there a few players ready for a rebound; he manages to push it up over the bar. So, all in all, a brilliant save.
NickOLarse999 4 years ago
Good saves are rarely given credit but that was magnificent. Pele paid tribute to it, he really couldn't believe anyone could have found the ball as Banks did. What a keeper that man was.

You can clearly see he went back to the goal to save it. Plus he went down. How?

Apparently, it was physically impossible to do it. But, he did it and it came off his THUMB and went over.

Seconded only by Dudek (2005 CL final - Shevchenko)
chazabo93 4 years ago
Yeah Lev Yashin was better than Banks, I'll admit. They didn't call him the black spider for nothing, if you ever get chance to see any rare footage of him with Russia etc. you'll see how amazing his reactions were, he was incredible.

alfy1000 4 years ago
Well, standing at the right position and having your hands in the exact right place is a hard job at itself so it's lucky but also very good work by Banks. Btw Pelé headed fantastically, no-one could have ever thought this shot would be saved.
