  • Classic rock !!!

  • Jim's voice is not that bad....I have heard of this for years and got curious on this and so I looked it up...thanks for having this for us to listen to....I did however hear a line he used on Total Eclipse, Giving off sparks.....but I must say this guy has a talent.....like nobody...I would like to see his work done in a huge musical!! Would be AWESOME!!! I must say Jim and Meatloaf are close vocally

  • @debfan74 Jim Steinman is very, very, very fond of reusing other stuff he's written. Nearly everything he's gone after the first Bat and Bad for Good is at least partially reworked into new projects. For example, another part of this song, the "Godspeed, speed us away" part, is reused in Nowhere Fast from the film Streets of Fire.

  • @BlackMoonLilith Oops, I meant to say after the first Bat and Bad for Good, everything he's done is at least partially reworked from old projects into his new projects, such as Bat II and Tanz der Vampire. See also his album with his created female group, Pandora's Box, named Original Sin, which has been heavily mined for everything from the film adaptation of The Shadow to Bat II to Celine Dion.

  • The best ever Meat Loaf sorry but Steinman was much much better The sad fact is that people expected him to sound exactly like Meat Loaf, that was a bit of a tall order.

  • @daveyboy4050 No They are both good at what they do. Meat is an amazing singer. Steinman is a musical genius!

  • i tota lly agree with garyjohna,i was in the royl navy @ the time this came out,was into meatloaf until tonite didnt realise meat covered it..awesome.i had the exact vinyl album, god knows where it is,but remember how good it was.going down memory lane now thanx to youtube..god bless you

  • I was in college when this came out and just out of the Army. I had listened a lot to "Bat Out Of Hell' a lot before this and the thesme appealed to a young man, and the the double meaning of giving bad for good (as well as staying bad for good). this is an awersome song, and I feel that Steinman's effort is underrated, especially since Meatloaf eventually covered these songs that were written for him!

  • For my money, this is the better version of this song, Meat did it quite well live in the 80's but never captured what Jim did with this song(and the less said about the piss poor Bat 3 version the better). Jim IMO simply has a bette voice, or at least a better voice for his material, not to say that I dont love me some of the loaf, cause I do, I just perfer Steinman.

  • @torchwood11 yeah, Steinman definitely had a much better voice. His voice was not only more beautiful, but also Steinman knew how to hit the notes very accurately. The only downside with Steinman's voice is that it wasn't as powerful as Meatloaf's voice. But other than that, I take Steinman's voice any day of the week over Meatloaf. And besides, Steinman had much better singers than Meatloaf, like Holly Sherwood and Rory Dodd.

  • @EliasAlucard i absolutely love Rory's voice.

  • this song wriiten and preformed by jim

meat coppied this album vertualy for bat out of 3 and ruined all the songs

  • @banboozlah well Jim brought this out in the late 80's and it did shit on sales and he was dropped from his record label cause of it, so Jim and meat decided to do bat 2 most songs came from this album but if this done well when it went on sale there would be no bat 2 or 3 so with this album failing it launched the success of bat 2 and 3, but i still think this is another good album anyway

  • @kipling1989 yes i know

  • I prefer this version purely because on Bat III Meat's voice just didn't do it for me, and I hated the production of the album too. Jim's voice may be weaker, but the song itself sounds more 'true' if you get what I mean.....that probably didn't any sense but w/e. If Meat had covered this on Bat II or bad attitude I reckon it would kick super ass.

  • I do enjoy the album, but I will be perfectly honest, with out Meat Loaf these songs would not have life....Steinman is kick ass song writer no doubt, but what he lacks in singing Meat Loaf Handled, and if you listen to Meat's albums from the 80's when they weren't working together his song writing isn't that great...they are truly the perfect complement for each other!

  • God speed us away, mate a line in the olden days wasn,t a prob, but fuck the ice world,we,ve created these days, fuk fat guts, jimmy done it my way

  • Is this album still available?

  • I reckon you will still be able to get a copy. I bought in on vinyl when it first came out and bought the CD about a year ago.

  • whats up poop head

  • fuck you all lover boy is where it's at the kid's hot tonight

  • jim was an awesome writer and certain songs a good singer but the debate if he was the best i think all you have to is listen to the words he is by far the most inventive of all song writers

  • Comment removed

  • John Lennons killer David Chapmen was obsessed with Todd Rundgren. Todd played guitar for and produced Bat Out of Hell. Todd also sang weird occult inspired sun worshiping songs. Lennon was obsessed with the occult.

  • WTF are you sayin brother? how old are you to disregaurd the Mozart talent of JS. and give it all to Tod?

  • if you read lennons boi you would know chapman was obsessed with lennon himself and even wanted to be lennon . he cut his hair like him, wore the same round wire rimed glasses as him and even wrote john lennon on a piece of tape and stuck it to hid ID. badge when he was a securaty guard .

he tryed to kill himself and failed so the next best thing would be to kill lennon .

read "john lennon the man the music the tragedy. " or "the john lennon story"

    if you need more proof

  • other then the intro, this version is a LOT better then meats

and of course, if meat sang it...it would be beyond awesome

  • to tell the truth i like this fast picking intro better then meats (and im a hard meatloaf fan)

i think this is one of the few songs steinman was ment to sing himself

  • have any of u read meatloafs bio .all the shit jim put him though. meat has the voice for the songs he writes. he has a good voice but meats version is better.

  • its a shame they fell out. meatloaf was made to sing steinmans songs.

  • hey stephie im sorry didnt me to upset you i just like jims songs better then meats . im with you cracker esp when your drunk not good with the key board myself

  • I personally don't think Steinman's voice is strong enough for his own songs. I love his songs and all but to me his voice sounds like it should be for mellow songs while songs like this need a...coarser voice. I think him and Meatloaf made a good pair. :D

  • no one disagrees with you

  • rock on jimmy!!!!!!!!!!

for i also wasent built for comfort i was built for speed

  • Just yes. This wins hands down for music to nod out to.

  • Lent this album to my mate Baz. in 81

    ...never saw it again....

  • vinal copy?

    bro that sucks!!!!!!!!

  • ahh i remember hearing this when i was little!

  • MEats is muh more rocky! I like Meats Better Sry Steinman You still wrie grea songs

  • can you even spell

  • yeah! I CAN! EVER THINK IT IS THE KEYBOARD! DAH

  • no i did not think it was the keyboard my bad

  • were you using your fists on the keybord????

  • no and evendently you dont know how to spell either!

MEAT IS MUCH MORE ROCKY! I LIKE MEATS BEATTER SORRY STEINMAN YOU STILL WRITE GREAT SONGS!

HAPPY PEOPLE! LEARN HOW TO SPELL BEFORE TELLING OTHERS! AND FUCK OFF! HAPPY NOW!

  • easy man were just breaking your balls a little

i do alot of type-os, more then ever when drunk

  • man? and balls? guyshave tose these days! btw Man is not me!

  • You're an idiot, which education system did you fall out of? Somalias?

  • are you the one stupid!

  • Take it easy , man.

  • I found this record in the junkpile, I had to buy it because it looked so ridiculous

  • Who the fuck do you think you are? Insaulting Steinman. He is brilliant. You must be retarded. His writing skills are unmatchable. No one can hold a candle to him, and yet, here you are, sitting on your ass, at a computer screen insaulting a genius. You belong in a junkpile. Just because he is unable to sing his amazing lyrics, does not call for retards to bitch about them. BY THE WAY, do you have any idea WHY Steinman did this album by himself? Because Meat Loaf had lost his voice. Fuck you.

  • LoL, you're an idiot. His music is rubbish when it's compared to your Paul McCartney's and your Bob Dylan's of the world. He's good, but not great.

  • i`ll give you dylan he is a master in a world of slaves.

    but paul?????

we all know lennon was the true driving force behind the beatles

and after the beatles were done what the fuck did paul do???

    a cheesy duet with m jackson ?

    and come on, "wings?"

thats not white bread its pink bubblegum

now everybody sing "you say you want to fill the world with silly love songs"

  • You're mistaken about The Beatles; Paul was the driving force behind them. And what has he done since the Beatles? Only made 37 top 40 hits, wrote one for Elvis Costello, was neck and neck with Elton John as being the most successful artist of the 70's, wrote a movie, 3 classical albums, made 3 animation movies, created a book of his art paintings, a book of poetry, did the 1st unplugged show for mtv, had 22 top 10 hits, and no less than 9 number 1's, among other things.

  • you defend sir paul by throwing "elton bend me over john" into this?????

yes when it comes to mainstreem lame ass music your right ok?

why were you even on this page in the first place ?

im sure if you look you could also find yourself some barry manilow or lee liberachi if thats also you thing ok?

  • I was on here because I was on a Jim Steinman kick. I was exploring his songs. I love a lot of his songs. I don't like Barry Manilow AT ALL lol. And Liberace, I haven't really heard anything from him. I like McCartney, Lennon, Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, Barry Gibb, Lindsey Buckingham, Bob Dylan, John Williams, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers...

  • He has made more artist famouse than any other song writer in history... at least in the late 80's and early 90's "Air supply"

    "Bonnie Tyler" and such...

  • I love Jim Steinman. But that's just not true sweetie. Jim didn't make Air Supply famous. He only wrote one hit for them babe. They'd already had 7 big top 10 hits before Making Love Out Of Nothing At All. It's good to be into a certain songwriter, but your thinking is going overboard. Tony Macaulay made people famous with his songwriting. Graham Gouldman. Burt Bacharach. Dennis Linde. Thom Bell. As I said, I love Jim Steinman, but I don't want you to push further than the truth honey.

  • ya but "making love out of nothing at all"

was the first air supply song with balls and diddent put people to sleep

  • @wpjam This is an ill-informed claim I'm afraid. He made Meat Loaf and Bonny Tyler famous, but not Air Supply, as they became famous on the back of their own (shite) songs. There are many more song-writers who have made many, MANY more people famous than Jim Steinman has.

  • lennon was the main reason paul thrived so much

  • "Insaulting".

    Lol. . . =P

  • Steinman and Meat Loaf were always at their best when they were working together. Steinman's got the bombastic songs. Meat Loaf's got the voice to carry those songs. Best team ever.

  • I loved this whole album from day one, still do, I love "surfs up" more than words can do justice

  • He reused a lot of the themes in this for the Batman musical.

  • A truly great album

  • Yes, it is.

  • I loved this album . the songs that Meatloaf have covered from it have been too polished and lacked the raw sound, Jim Steinman is a giant amongst song writers.

  • agree. And the Meatloaf version edits out a lot of good parts.....

  • the sound in meat loaf's versions is much richer though plus i reckon meat loaf's voice is more powerful

  • i might prefer this version if i liked Jim's accent and if it had more sound layers

  • have wondered most of my lfe why this Album didnt get reconition,i never realy questioned Steinmans singing ability.,listening to it today,i still think he done a good job,Weather Meat Loaf could of done better is pure history,??????

  • Wow, it has some phrases from "Nowhere fast".

  • Jim Steinman is an awesome songwriter!

  • Fantastic stuff. Master of the overblown rock operas.

  • I'm a big Meatloaf fan, but his version is no where near as good as this.

  • I have three versions of this album; two on vinyl (when Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through was a free single included with it) and of course the CD. Magic! His intro to Stark Raving Love was so good that he used it again on a competely different song he wrote for Bonnie Tyler.

  • Jim Steinman is indeed an exceptionally gifted componist.

I love almost all of his songs - Meat Loaf, Bonny Tyler, Tanz der Vampire, his "own" CD...

But to be honest, he is a lousy singer. With some equipment everyone can sing like that.

But his music is simply ingenious! "Wagnarian style" is indeed an accurate appellation!

  • I prefer Meat Loaf's version,I'm a proud Meat Loaf fan.

Meat Loaf have more power in his voice.

  • Now this is one song, that Meat Loaf should have left well alone. Jim did the best version. The sad fact is that people expected him to sound exactly like Meat Loaf, that was a bit of a tall order.

  • must agree meatloaf should of really left this 1 alone, others are a lil weak by jim but no doubt is the genius of rock/love songs even tho he aint got a great voice to be perfectly honest

  • @beatityatube - Meat's version is by far...but i mean totally by far better than this piece of......how can you possibly say this is better tha meat version....OMFG.....This version has no emotion he seems to be reading the lirics from somewhere instead of singing it from he's heart......There is a reason meat's version behing better known.....

  • Ah yes the album that was going to be the follow to Bat Out Of Hell, if only Meat hadn't completly lost his voice at the time, so Jim sang them all himself, and the album was almost completly ignored. Whch is such a shame

  • Jim Steinman amazing song writer and had a good voice aswell :)

  • I love how he MUST have known that his voice is less than Meatloaf's, but he's like "screw it" MY voice has the emotion! AND he just nails the soul into these tunes. I love it.

  • he knew it was for meat, knows he couldnt have sung it as good, but fuck it, he didnt want to loose such a good song, in my opinion steinman is as much a legend as meat loaf, seen his last concert in scotland in 2008, he struggled but you could see the effort was there, music will never be the same, and im only 19

  • Yeah, i LOVE meatloaf - i'm 16!

He's amazing! My dad got me into him

And i'm go glad of it!

  • @Aidz2 great im45 and got my son into it now he plays in his own band great thay dont make music like this any more more the pity

  • @Aidz2 well im 45 and i got my son into it now he plays in a band they dont make music like this any more and good for your dad Aidz2 he is a good dad good on him lets make the best music last

  • @scobiedooo

Actually Bad for Good made Jim Stienman a brand name, if it wasn't that he would have never found success after The Bat album.

  • Not bad...but its missing the Red Special

  • Love Brian May!

  • My buddy has this on vinyl record. Great classic rock album for sure!

  • Prefer Meat's version but bow to the songwriter master

  • I have this vinyl record. Love it! Jim Steinman is great!

  • I prefer this to the version on Bat 3. Meat Loaf cuts a lot of corners in his version.

  • bat 3 is a good album but its an album that tries too hard in comparison to the previous two.

  • Great song. One of Steinman's best. Meat's version is better, but... I can't complain about this awesome early version.

  • i feel so so bad ya hooo

  • This song is frickin amazing. A musical and lyrical masterpiece.

  • like the new meat version, specially with bryan may guesting on the guitar solo, different spin on it.

  • Lets not forget the Talent that made Jim & Meat what they are today with his brilliant guitaring and production and he was the only one that would produce the Bat out of Hell album with his own record label. The man i am talking about is Todd Rungdren. Alround god of music.

  • had a poster of that cover on my wall for ever. I think it sped up puberty by a couple of years.

  • bahahaha roflrocked kenny

  • crap I just got Steinmaned...it is so much more frustrating than getting rick rolled

  • Is this really Jim?!?! Wow. I know the version from bat 3 more though.

  • that's right! I had this album!!! nuther great rare find. very cool post.

i cant remember if it was a stratocaster or a telecaster!!!

  • can u post surf up

  • can someone post the song surfs up by jim steinman as i cant find it on youtube

  • Jim Steinman will be bad for good! Some songs grow on you after a while, others take you by storm the first time you hear 'em. This is one of the latter!

  • fabulous!!!! I enjoyed the song so much thank you

    Desiree Dawn songwryter Oxford Mississippi

  • This is one awesome album. I have the original Lp that had the extra record with The Storm and Rock and roll Dreams come through. 'Surf's up and so am I'

  • I love this. Its a shame that Meat Loaf didnt sing it all those years ago, nd even more of shame that they hacked it up when he did sing it.

  • this brings back sooo many childhood memories for me! My dad used to play this for me when i was younger, me and my brother and sister who to compete to see who could say the line "God Speed" before eachother, it was awesome!

  • Still breathtaking!

  • Jim Steinman hat das als Erster gesungen?? Wusste ich gar nicht. Auf dem 3. Bat out of Hell Album singt das Meat Loaf. Cool Cool. Hört sich gut an. Jim Steinman ist der Beste. Mit Meat Loaf sind sie unschlagbar!!!!

  • Yeah for people who still have vinyl. How awesome are USB turntables that allow us the chance to archive this stuff?

  • Not many People Do know.. but.. it all just started .. with this Man... his Music... I still do have the album.. Respect.. Jim....

  • awesome !!!

  • sweet mama this brings back memories
