He went when the bear were fat and lazy for 12 good growing seasons and got out before the bear went into the hyper fall feed. Anyone hunting grizzlies with a .308, had better place his shot exactly, or he will be killed by an angry, wounded bear. Disregarding the AK47 suggestion, one would be well-advised to bring some heavy artillery, to wit: a .300 magnum, a .375 Weatherby magnum, or a .458 Winchester. And have someone backing you up armed with a 12 gauge with rifled slugs. If you must kill one of these magnificent creatures, aim for the shoulder, the hump, or if you've got the guts, the eye.

If a bear is in a good/curious mood it might work well, but if the bear is in attack mode, bear spray don't work that well. People who are in bear country should carry a gun and bear spray. Pull the right one out for the right situation.

I live near woods where you can find many bears in my country. In europe we dont need guns, like you do. I went to school every morning at 6AM through that wood and i have seen them(bears)many times. They do not attack if you don't get any closer. was always very loud when i knew they were near.They are not very dangerous.They need the place to live, but man comes to his territory. If a bear was going to eat me, I'd use a 20 round 308 carbine and shoot it in the neck, head, and chest. Knives or handguns wont do anygood when fighting grizzlies. You'll just wound the animal or aggrivate it. Bear spray is useless when there is too much wind and it might even get in your own face and burn ur eyes. Best weapon against bear is a AK47 or 308 carbine. Something that has a lot of rounds and is strong.

@traiter82 An AK47 is for the 'spray and pray' crowd who hope that if they fire enough ammo something will stick. Best gun on a large bear in my opinion is a 300 Weatherby. One well-placed bullet from that gun will knock the biggest grizzly on his ass. The old time hunters used double rifles, mostly .500 Jeffery. The .505 Gibbs was popular also in the old days and used by Ernest Hemingway in Africa. If you need a cannon get a 460 Weatherby with 8000 ft/lbs of force when it hits.

My comments were based largely on historical references from times when people actually NEEDED to kill large predators for self-preservation or the preservation of others. Furthermore, if you were informed, you would know that pepper spray is considered as or more effective  a defense against an attacking bear as a firearm. You can easily miss with a firearm, or with the brown bears great bulk and vitality EASILY miss a shot that will drop him before he can rip you up pretty fucking badly. A pepper fogger makes it difficult to miss, and it is very effective.

Best Alaskan bear guns are 9.3x62 mm - 375H&H - 416 Remington 416 Rugby - 458 Win mag .

The AK 47 7.62x39 Russian has less power than a 30-30 Winchester !

@Moldovawineimporter AK with 30 armor piercing rnds, Saiga 12 ga with 20 armor P slugs, and 308 with 20 armor P rnd is better than all your guns against brown bear. Your guns are too slow for a charging bear at 3 feet. Your guns are strong, but slow. You need speed, penetration, and at least to be a 30 cal. Only shoot head, lungs, shoulder, spine. Ak does have less power, but very good penetration with a FMJ or AP rnd. Powerful + slow gun is not a good choice if you bump into a bear 3 ft away

When you bump into a charging bear thats 3 ft away, you'll need lots of firepower like the guns I mentioned. Imagine being in a cage with a bear and only have 3 secs to grab a gun and shoot, would you grab the AK with 30 rnds of AP or your long bolt/lever high power gun that probably only has about 1-4 rnds and is very slow? Ponder on this

It is sad, but I mean, he lived with Bears. While he got some amazing footage and photographs, he was still dealing with wild animals that are unpredictable no matter how much you're around them. And I guess he got over confident in his abilities to apporach a Bear. I mean, from what I understand, he got brutalized by that Bear. I imagine the footage is pretty horrific, especially since Bears are so massive and ferocious when they attack. Not a pretty site, look as the man who got his face torn.
