this is not to be taught as a technique, its something which you practice which gives you options for what to do, several options, not to be used at once as a single technique. much like how a kata is not what to do during an actual fight.
I took a class from my kenpo instructor's teacher one time. He looked like some dude who just came in from the beach after drinking too much beer. I wouldn't have thought it, but he's a badass. Fast, fast hands. Very powerful strikes. And he knows just where to hit and cause the most damage. He looks like a beach bum, but he would kick the crap out of just about anybody.
This instructor has obviously gotten out of shape a bit, but I wonder if he could ever deliver techniques? No disrespect but these techniques are sloppy and slow and have no power. It seems like a bunch of slapping. The kicks are so slow and weak that they would do little harm. I would go back to basics for a while.
let me enlighten u guys a little, jus bcause a fighter is best on the ground doesn't mean dats where they'll b, nor does it mean its where they should be, som ppl train 4 a situation of ground fight but rather stand, this is b cause a real fight should last a few seconds, if ur in a fight 4 ur life and u end up on da ground da fight is going on 4 to long a time.
sorry, but i believe he doesn't stand a chance against a boxer or grappler, not even those moves are goign to be spontaneous in a real street situation.
@marvelouscrow I disagree! As soon as the boxer or grappler throws a punch and then stands perfectly still w/ his arm stretched out the fight will be over!
@marvelouscrow The punches are weak and his kicks are terrible. This is an out dated method of combat. Ed Parker even felt this way towards the end. Parker was very over weight and died at the age of 57. Kenpo masters are so out of shape. This alone will get you killed. Stay in shape and train like a fighter you'll last longer.
@clearcombat agree with you. giving ten punches in few secs and those punches have no power, what is use of speed? kenpo, pencak silat, and other more or less similar styles, i don't think they would help in a real street fight. as u said "train like a fighter", because some moves in kenpo are good for movies and inside dojo, but are not applicable in street, each has his preference in martial art, but i beleive in efficiency, i find it in sambo and muay thai, i believe in kyokushinkai too.
@clearcombat Man you are damn straight. About the ONLY Kenpo guy I ever saw who was well conditioned as in "Like A Fighter" was Speakman. Look at his recent videos hes turned into a tub of lard to. These guys could not even take a decent body shot without crapping their pants.
@clearcombat It is strange that so many of the Kempo instructors are very over weight and can't move anymore. Do kempo people have a special high fat diet???
@Ronin6575 Why yes, the eat herds of cattle. I am 51 years old and I would destroy this guy and the zombie partner in no time. I teach self defense for a living and I teach a system which is very clear cut and to the point. This guy will get people killed.
hahahah he almost fall down doing all those chickenwings. Check 0.06. and why is he checking his pocket while doing those garbage moves. This is really hilarious.
To view true Kenpo, you will have to look up Tommy Chavies, Ron Chapel, Frank Trejo, Steve Muhammad or Paul Mills.....! To see is to be deceived but to feel is to believe....! Kenpo is a complete art, if you take the time to learn...
@darkelvis1 If you can't put a pack of force into lightning fast hits, meaning you got to make out of your size if things to fit to deliver a good enough impact, the guy's got some weight, and he probably has his ways getting around the delay ball like most experts in karate do :)
Now kids do remeber that old Joe here getting up there in age. Sloppy yes dumbed some this down abit ,yes But to question how he got to be a his black belt ranking, that is both ignorrant and arrogant, you want to question his ability then go to him.
man this guy is so sloppy, how in gods name did he earn his black belt, guys, this isnt americna kenpo, american kenpo is fast, brutal. sea videos from joshua ryer, larry tatum, paul mills, jeff speakman huk planas, these guys show a good example of true kenpo. oh yeah and this other school casa de kenpo.
MAfanatic, most kempo places are not like this haha, kempo is probably one of the best MAs for the street...( This guy isnt a good example) and we dont fall for each other haha... We take the traditional route where if you dont do the technique right you get punched... and we do full contact sparring and body conditioning...
This guy got promoted to some super black belt level by memorising 100s of techniques, all with flashy names, and learned many complicated forms. The arts that prevail on the street and in a full contact ring are the arts that promote students based on ability to fight and conditioning. That's what Kenpo guys don't understand.
Nothing is more common place in the martial arts than spectacular (ok, not here) responses to singular, predetermined, wet noodle, and compliant attacks. For attacks like that, why even bother with martial arts?
Doesn't Mr. Palazo take a long time to get that first elbow in to stop his attacker? Isn't Mr. Palazo leaving rather a lot of space between himself and his opponent during this technique? I notice he doesn't bother with a forward bow for the ultimate right chop, why not? Did that scoop actually get anywhere near the groin? Isn't it misleading to simply show a rather complex Flashing Wings without any mention of it's context within the kenpo syllabus?
Where is mention of the clock system and its related techniques? (dancing death, destructive hammer, flashing mace.) "Do you build a house with the roof first?" TELL THE BASICS, MR PALAZO!!!
I usually defend mr. palanzo, but although I respect his achievements, I wish he would shoot this video again. I see way to much wasted motion in this technique, and to be honest, I cant figure out why he keeps slapping his right hip with his right hand while executing this technique. This is a beautiful technique, but this time Joe does not show it much justice. Sorry sir, may end up effective on the street, but Mr Parker is sitting up there watching, saying WTF!!!
I don't qualify as a martial arts expert, so take this for what it's worth - but a number of the Kenpo instructional videos I've seen seem to display something similar to Mr. Palanzo's hip-slapping. I've often suspected it's to add sound, making the demonstrated technique seem more dramatic in light of the fact that the blows are (wisely) subdued so as not to harm the person playing the attacker. I'd prefer it if Kenpo teachers didn't do this; it robs the art of credibilty to a "newbie".
Maniac - watch the 1st 15 seconds of the video - that is the technique - The rest is a break down - Not really sure what you mean about his right arm. Great Demo Mr Palanzo.
I'm not making a statement one way or the other about this man as a martial artist. However, before you decide for yourself watch his right hand throughout the duration of this technique.
i just pray that none of you guys will get the chance to face mr palanzo i agree this one is not filmd and done to his best but he was teaching and taking peopls down befor you where borne how old are you ????
Is hit them so hard, so many times, so fast they dont have enough hands to hold what hurts, and this is one technique out of many, which is all intergrated into fighting
Seanandupre, As you say this particular kempo martial artist could strike better, or faster or more effectually but its all tools for the tool box. The chance that you get through more then a few parts of a technique in a fight is not very likely. There are hundreds of techniques in Kempo, often in a fight you will use more spread out things and not finish and compleat full techniques but adjust them and use them to fight with, whilst throwing punches and kicks. My favorite philosophy of kempo
I enjoyed your video, If you need help getting your video exposed i use a service at Tubeviews . Net They offer views, ratings, and comments. They helped my video get ranked on the first page
in a fight you should try to strike the most vital areas and end it in the shortest time possible because you want end it without using up your energy, also the pain breaks your attacker's spirit to fight. This guys technique takes too long,he strike hard to reach areas and he keeps leaving himself expose. That first elbow could have been a neck lock to a take down. Oh and by the way, on the street when people punch, they run at you with their body weight so he couldn't even start that shit.
the guy is sloppy dude, flashing wings is actually a good techinque if done correctly you should end the fight with the elbow to the ribs. and not necesarally ahve to finish the technique to take the guy out. believe me ive done it once on the street and after the elbow strike i broke 2 of the guys ribs.well take care bro.
@seanadupre I have always found jujutsu a usefull skill, but not a complete system on it's own. Plus i witnessed a jujutsu brown belt drop right to the ground when threatened with violence. He was about to use his ground game until the bad guys stepped on his head.
@muclesmarinara That guy seems to be an idiot. Why would anyone just drop to ground? His job was to throw or take the person down, not go down on his own and invite them to follow him. I he still alive? If he is, his belt needs to be taken away or his instructor needs to be sued.
@seanadupre i think he was to used to fighting on the ground as if all fights end up there. i thought you were supposed to stay upright for as long as possible because it is the natural human position.
@muclesmarinara Well, like you said, that's his favorite area. Staying up or down has to do with the situation one is faced with and what position you can handle best.
If standing is a natural for your attacker and you are trained on ground fighting, then make him as uncomfortable as possible. But use strategy.
I have studied Kempo, my instructor was taught by James Ibrao who learned the art from it's creator Ed Parker and this junk looks nothing like what I learned. I've heard of an art losing some of its original teachings but come on...what I see here would not work in a real fight. Learn some real Kempo dude!
he isnt fluid. hes to old to really be fluid. check elsewhere. why dont you go ahead and type in joe palanzo and watch him move when he was younger. he is the small guy in the videos with a beard.
i think that each martial art has something to offer people...but whether those things are suitable for all people?...no.
ppl who like to say that that kenpo sucks or tkd is crap for the street or mma doesn't work..thats a pretty narrow minded view..just because you didn't like it...find it useful or it didn't work for your body type doesn't mean that it wouldn't suit someone who can really excel at that martial art and make it effective.
I like the hand techniques but I have to agree with someones adolescent comment but not in those exact words. I don't agree with crossing your steps. That is very dangerous. Other than that, everything else looked pretty fluid.
I don't think you guy's get it! It's an ABC system that allows you to follow through if the first move does not stop the attack. All the moves are not really needed but are just there in case the first one does not work and also part of the system. Like my old kenpo teacher (John Woods) from Baltimore said "How much strenght does it take to poke a man in the eye". And I asked "So why are there my moves?" and he said "Because kenpo is my art and it is a beautiful art".
Didn't like it. Took him nearly two steps just to close the gap, one of which was diagonal. Anyone with half a brain would have kept moving and either clocked him in the head or knocked him off balance while he cross stepped. Especially because no one realistically throws that straight punch out without retracting it a second later. You can't just avoid it and hope it stays there.
soldier4200 what do you mean it does not work in a street fight? i have been using kenpo for 7 years in gang wars.
in what way did it not help you out in street fight? maybe you from the rush of adrenaline, you didn't know what to do? or lack of practice? lack of eye body coordination? pls reply
Point sparring is waste of time. It's a dangerous habit to relax after a hit is landed.
But i point the finger at your instructor. Kenpo is highly effective. I train with cops and prison guards in kenpo, and it works. You were at a lousy school, if they were point sparring, and it's good that you got away.
Wow! Waht was that? An exhibition? I have never seen the technique done like that. I know this move and I'm sorry but that was awful. It would not work.
I like this guy..he breaks down the technique very well for the time frame that he does it in. It would be nice if he would do some of the "what if's" though, since for the most part the what if's are what will really happen.
see...thats why u only learn martial arts from home so u dont get slapped or karate striked like that :D

Especially because no one realistically throws that straight punch out without retracting it a second later. You can't just avoid it and hope it stays there.

i tried kenpo and its a waste a time point sparring is a waste of time. kenpo Techniques
do not work in actual strret face its all show
