  • Sorry...'are further examples of...'

  • FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND IRONY!

The only thing that is ironic about this song is that in endeavouring to illustrate irony to us, our artist has only succeeded in being ironic by failing to be ironic in the song. What both Jack and Alanis have expressed is 'situational irony' as opposed to irony in its truest sense.

For real irony read Jane Austin or see Ed Byrne on his exposition of the topic.

Sadly, what we have here is further examples of tragic coincidence. Nothing more.

  • Irony is when the actual meaning of the words is the opposite of their surface meaning (so the first line about a song called "irony" that doesn't have irony could fit here). Irony can also mean when actions have the opposite effect of their intention. Most examples in this song are humorous coincidences, as are many of the examples in the original song.

  • they are all ironic

  • rly the gift of the magi short story was thrown into this

  • i loved the ray charles line

  • Hey nick

  • you just have alot of free time don't you ?

  • There's a couple ironic things, but not all of them can be classified as ironic. Alanis actually had a couple of "ironic" things in the original song, but they were a form of "cosmic irony" ('rain on the wedding day' and 'traffic jam when you're already late,' to name a couple).

So yeah. No real difference here.

  • It's ironic that you're making fun of a song called Ironic that had nothing ironic by trying to make a song yourself which barely was barely ironic. Oh the irony.

  • The irony in this song, is that you are attempting to show that Alanis Morisette does not know irony, while still making many of the same mistakes!

  • The only thing ironic here is the reference to gift of the magi

  • irony means...

the opposite of what is expected happening.

    more or less.

all of these do not fall in these category

  • I would think that the Marlboro Man getting cancer isn't ironic, but expected.

  • Too Funny

  • wow... not only does Alanis not know what irony is, but then someone comes along to "correct" her, that also does not know what irony is... brilliant...

  • No.... It's not ironic AGAIN!!!!!!

  • You have no sense of irony.

  • LOL.. Everyone thinks they know what irony is, but no one ever agrees with them....myself included. I will accept only 2 authorities on this matter... Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry please weigh in.

  • Ironically not all of these things are ironic.

  • @mikedamat yeah a dead end sign next to a fresh grave isn't contradictory at all, just a coincidence. it fits the modern definition, but then so does the original version of this song, which he ironically is denouncing in the first place.

  • He used Gift of the Magi for part o his lyrics, that's pretty good example of irony still

  • The dictionary defines ironic as anything coincidental or unexpected.

  • i think he knows what irony is.........just sayin

  • retarded ass fuck

  • nice purple glove

  • imo.. that would be an "Ironic coincidence" or maybe a coincidence that happens to be ironic?. or is there a secret rule saying it cant be both?....

  • this is soooooo bad, it's good

  • OMG RAY CHARLES ON A BLIND DATE AHAAHA

  • I have to say, I do find it extremely amusing that this song has a much lesser grasp of irorny than the original song. The original song had plenty of ironic situations, they were just subtle, is all. It's funny that the people claiming the original song had 0% irony in it, have no clue what irony is themselves.

  • @HitTheHighNotes Pretty ironic, eh? ;D

  • @FishInATree yush xB

  • Jesus Christ, Colonel Sanders choking to death on a chicken wing is not ironic. Henry Heimlich choking to death might be considered ironic, but really, Henry Heimlich would have to survive a choking attack after having the Heimlich manoeuvre performed on him, only to die later from internal injuries sustained during the procedure. Now THAT would be ironic.

  • Can someone please Upload/Download or whatever load this to LimeWire, i really want this on my iPod.

  • @TheSpyroUzumaki get a youtube to mp3 downloader, i recomend dvd videosoft.

  • wait to make a correction video with mostly wrong lyrics...FAIL

  • i smiled :| :P

  • was there a reason to post this i didnt find anything ironic in this

  • Several of these things aren't ironic either...

  • No, Alanis's song is ironic, because she claims things which aren't ironic to be ironic - and that's ironic.

Also, this parody song is also ironic, because it claims to "correct" Alanis lack of irony - which was never actually lacking, because the irony was the song itself, not the examples - but fails to do so (yet correctly identifies the irony of Alanis's song lacking ironic examples, despite being called "ironic" - thus, it ironically understands the irony, while claiming otherwise).

  • p.s. it's ironic that all those who're claiming a better understanding of irony in this comment section actually have a lesser understanding of it, because they're failing to detect the irony of making a song called "ironic" which features no irony in it.

Yet this comment itself is ironic, because I'm condemning the very thing that I'm actually in the process of doing. But as I've just identified that irony, then is it really ironic - or just hypocritical?

    I'll leave you to decide.

  • @KlaxonCow honestley i have no idea what you just said :/

  • This is all ironic. You haters in the comments need to invest in a dictionary.

  • Amusing song, but it's almost as lacking in actual irony as the song that it's parodying. The original seemed to confuse "**** happens" with irony. This song generally seems to confuse "coincidence" with irony.

Now the collegehumor version...Many of those ARE examples of irony.

  • None of this shit is ironic either! Jesus christ...

  • Hahaha I love the Ray Charles and the Head Lice on the Orkin man xD

  • yea i no thats funny

  • No, these things you sing of are, like in Alanis' song, just bad fortune. There is NO irony in here at all.

  • Some of the things here are ironic, but many of them weren't...a dead-end sign near a grave is a coincidence, as is the Marlboro man getting cancer. Getting hit by a Dodge truck is funny and ironic, though.

  • @ratchet1215 Get a fucking life

  • Comment removed

  • @ratchet1215 it is ironic that the marlboro man died of cancer. His whole philosophy was good health and healthy living. Yet he dies of cancer. IRONIC.

  • @ratchet1215 those are all ironic.

  • @ratchet1215 Doesn't the Marlboro man represent masculinity, strength and knowledge? ..I mean dying while you cross the road - That's a co-incidence but dying from the product you are trying to sell as representing those virtues you falsely believe in.. now isn't that satire and irony?

  • @Nswayze22 Yes, exactly! You nailed it.

  • @ratchet1215 The dead end one isn't ironic but the morlboro man getting cancer is if he got cancer from his own product..

  • haha, a lot of these things are not ironic at all.

  • Haha I have no idea why people gave you thumbs downs. You're exactly right. A lot of these are sucky coincidences. Sucky coincidences aren't irony.

  • haha youre right. people just dont understand that sarcasm is the most common form of irony. I negated your thumbs down... This is still a lot closer than alanis' song

  • @0mgwhat an dumb ass all of these things are ironic if you had some common knowledge you would understand them

  • not really that funny

  • @thedude1414

    Is that ironic?

  • collegehumor stole your idea

  • but collegehumor's is actually good.

  • actually most of the things in this remake aren't ironic.

  • haha we watched this in mrs sims class:)

  • you in mrs sims too????

  • haha hey seth:D

  • Do you mean in the song itself or the fact that she sings a song about irony while she doesn't know irony?

  • Actually there is one ironic thing in the song by Alanis.....if anyone figures it out, let me see if you got it....comment me, I'll tell you if your right.

  • thats the irony: It's a pop song called irony

When everything in it is irony free

  • exactly... only ironic thing inside that song.

  • The video was nice! But I don't see how this song is any more ironic than Alanis.'

I mean the plane crash on the guy's first flight ever after avoiding it for years? Only a coincidence? I find it hard to buy that...

But I gather we'll just have to agree to disagree in the end.

  • The plane crash actually isn't ironic. Now if he worked for a company that made the airplanes, or the companie that set up the safty in the plane, then it would be. But it isn't that way. But there is one ironic thing in Alanis song, do you think you know what it is?

  • Awsome video! We watched this video in my 9th grade english class when we were making fun of that pop singer cause we know more about irony then she does...haha *high five*

  • Comment removed

  • LOL THIS IS FUNNY!

  • I hope someone made Alanis watch this so she knows how fail her song is :-D

  • if ya want to watch someone really rip into her about this song watch ed byrne, he's an irish comedian and it is one of his most famous gags, just type in ed byrne and alanis an it should come up

  • Actually, one of the most ironic things I know, is the original Alanis song - it keeps talking about so called ironic things, is named 'ironic' - but nothing in it is ironic.

    So that's ironic.

Now I said that word too much and it lost meaning to me.

  • Ur genius (: I really enjoyed

  • It took me a few seconds to get the dodge truck one, but I get it now

  • "I think the only irony in this song is supposed to fix the irony of "Ironic" but fails to have actual irony and instead uses coincidences."

  • ^^ XD

  • I think the only irony in this song is supposed to fix the irony of "Ironic" but fails to have actual irony and instead uses coincidences. Irony is misused as meaning "coincidental" by many people improperly and it actually means a result coming out of an event that is the opposite of what is expected to happen.

    Example

You bring an umbrella for every day of each month in Spring and never had the chance to use it and when Summer roles around, you leave the umbrella at home on the day it rains.

  • Comment removed

  • Irony its like silvery or Goldy except its made of iron(Baldrick probable misquote)

  • I've got to track down every tosser I've met who's ever quoted a contradiction or a coincidence as irony and make them watch this.

See you in a decade or possibly 10

  • Yeah, but a dead end sign next to a fresh grave and Ray Charles on a blind date aren't ironic.

  • I looked that up just now. According to wikipedia they fit the bill pretty damn well

  • I'm with novjunulo. They're funny, but they're not ironic.

  • Cool video.

It's getting hit when a Dodge truck doesn't brake?

I'm not sure about that one. Is it irony because they are getting hit instead of running into something?

  • The key phrase is Dodge. Its a similar joke to Bo Burnhams "ford focus drivers got a.d.d"

  • Awesome examples of irony!!!

  • underthesunO that was awesome very nice

  • lol...i liked that song :(

  • let me help you out. this is going to take two entry's but let me inform you that there is more than one form of irony...there's literary irony which this fits the definition which deals with the paradoxical nature of reality and the contrast b/t an actual and ideal condition which most of the song sings about and the lines about life deal with the paradox of just that, reality and/or life...

  • and one last form of irony besides what most think irony alone is, is the use of words to convey a meaning which is opposite to its literal...like the line in the song...well isn't this nice...and yes, isn't the entire song ironic itself, seeing that everyone expected one thing and got the "opposite", a song not about irony, "wink".

  • Mostly good, but the Ray Charles and grave examples aren't actually ironic, just amusing coincidences.

  • And what do you think that "ironic" means?

  • eldoop959 is right,

Its a coincidence. Irony deals with 2 things that's out come is different from what is expected.

Ray charles is blind, he goes on a blind date... that's a similar situation so it is deemed as a coincidence.

Irony would be more like falling in love with a blind girl.

Most are good examples but some are only a coincidence.

  • The story with the watch and the comb, isn't that called The Gift of the Magi?

  • Comment removed

  • Yes. I noticed it too. The story with the watch and the comb is from The Gift of Magi. I just read it.

  • haha brilliant i love it

  • Very good, but in all fairness the part in the original song of the guy who is afriad of planes, finally takes a flight which crashes was ironic (IMO).

  • Very very clever!

  • lolololl

    true.

    <3 ha ha.

  • Vicariously, mmm now what does that mean? Ah yes to travel by indirect means.

  • One of my favorite videos!

  • my language arts teaching posted the url of this vid on her website! we learning bout irony

i think sum of the stuf u calle irony

    is just a coincidence

    but thats just me

  • omg xDDD cool, man xD very good ^^

  • and we are learning about irony.

  • I was reading the gift of the magi for school when i heard that song. Isn't it ironic... now it is.

  • Haha

I loved the "Gift of the Magi" reference XDDD

  • I love Alanis...

    but I liked this video

    because the KFC guy died.

Not only is that food disgusting, but they're extremely cruel to their chickens.

  • Well, EVERYBODY that kills chicken to make fried chicken are "extremeley cruel" to their chickens! DUH! But, why is everybody hating on KFC?!

  • cause they kill 'em in a particularly bad way

  • Well, how does KFC kill them differently than any other fried chicken people?

  • we saw this in school

  • i like your videos :D

  • where can I get a high quality copy of this?

  • this is so hilarious! lol <33

  • just like some other people, we r discussing irony in my LA class, we r watching your video tomorrow...u r a very clever person!

  • our class watched this in school

  • I was there.

    Same class, FTW

  • Oo???

  • excellent

  • awesome

  • Ed Byrne???

  • A lot of these comments may well be "socratic irony". Its the best kind for fucking with people.

  • Your video brought pletiful laughs to my classroom.

    Thank you.

  • Not exactly fresh... This song came out in 1996.

  • Your almost as good as Weird Al Yankovic

  • OMG this came out nearly 2 years ago... i rememeber watching this when you first posted it! :O

  • I would guess that there is not an English teacher in this country who has seen this and is not profoundly grateful to all of you for this. FOR YEARS we have tried to undo the damage that woman did with that song. Do you know how BORING it is to be forced to engage in a war with Alanis Morrisette? And I loved her first song so much. THANK YOU. Now marry me.

  • I always get irony and coincidences confused. lol. Always figured if youre talkinga bout someone, and they walk by, it was ironic. Friends told me otherwise ^_^

  • OH MY GOD! Finally! That song is not ironic! It's just unfourtunate... everytime we say something ironic everyone goes "Take that, Alannis Morisette!"

  • Ed byrne slates that song too- i like jack's way of doing it better tho

  • lmao...Ray Charles on a blind date

  • lmao!!!!! very nice!!!!

  • this is good- totally ironic, good job and dead funny!

  • This concept is over done. Leave Alanis alone.

  • Over done but true. And ironic!

  • Nice idea. works well

  • Every time I hear that song I get so fucking pissed. None of that song is ironic! Not one line!

  • you made this video very goodly.

  • well...not goodly.

  • I'll give you a real example of the word irony. If you're a fitniss guru and you tell everyone to eat healthy, then you pack open a bag of fattening chips. This is a true example of an irony. Here is a false example: If you buy a gun for self defense and you get shot by your own gun. This isn't ironic, its unfortunate.

  • hey debbie downer over here, its good fun not the gettysburg address. chill

  • The original song wasn't ironic at all. It was just unfortunate.

  • Eh, I dont really find this funny =S

  • Meh. Take some voice lessons, dude. Or just practice.

  • He's not a singer, tool! Don't take things so seriously.

  • He didn't sing it, and it's a comedic video; it doesn't need good vocals to be funny.

  • If you watched the video you'd notice that someone else supplied the vocals for this video.

  • So what?

  • No, dear. "So What?" is a song from the musical "Cabaret." This is something else.

  • The word 'irony' has a couple of different meanings. Some of the most badly jumbled and mixed up definitions of the word can be found in a good dictionary.

    Oh, the irony.

  • Hahahahaha! That is fantastic!

  • I'm still confused on the difference between irony and coincidence.

coincidence: two things happen as if they were planned but weren't

irony: the opposite of what you think happens does

    right or wrong?

so the original song is pretty ironic.

but I think it has coincidence as well instead.

"An old man turned 98 he won the lottery died the next day."

is that irony or a coincidence?

same as "traffic jam when you're already late."

    everything else seems ironic though.

  • Irony I guess something that happenes that should have been prevented.

Like leaving Seattle to get married in the Mexican Desert and then it rains in the desert.

A man turning 98 winning the lotto and dying is classed as unfortunate. Traffic jam also. Taffic Jams and People who are 98 die all the time.

  • yeah! you're awesome, thanks.

how ironic do you think this song is?

  • Coincidence is more like... hmm... you go to a music store to get a CD and you see your friend their getting the same CD or you getting a movie and your friend coming over saying they really want to see the movie, you coincidently have just rented or bought the movie.

  • Irony is more of two incidents sort of clashing. Something along the lines of if you stole the awesome new phone that is out from like a verizon store. then you got caught stealing and went to jail, then later found out that very day you were going to get that exact type of phone as a present.

leaving seattle to get married in a desert where it coincidently rains is not irony (though it would suck) the lotto thing isnt really ironic either. more like really bad luck.

  • But seriously, this was an awesome video. It made me LOL a few times. And by the way, that is the whitest Ray Charles I have ever seen XD

  • thats the whitest ray charles impersonator ive ever seen lol

  • I like Jimmy eat world, so points fr that, but it wasn't as good as the ism one.

  • As an enormous Alanis Morissette fan, I thought this was fantastic! And I won't even try to defend the original.

  • I liked this, it was funny...lol. Especially the whole thing from The Gift of the Magi, although I have a feeling most people won't know what you're talking about.

    viel liebe

    Kristen

  • what

i know what he is talking about

  • I said 'most' people, not everyone.

  • i knew as well.

very sad story about poor people who love each other.

  • I knew too.

A bittersweet sad story about poor people who love each other.

  • ....Impressive
