It may sound weird but I have goose bumps when watching this particular scene. This is one of the rare serious (not comedy) scenes in RD. Rimmer finally getting out of his shell of self-loathing and turning into Ace Rimmer.
Love Red Dwarf, but there are so many flaws. Rimmer destroying the time-drive would have exactly the same effect as his future self destroying the ship (and with it the time drive). Kryten even pointed this out.
I'm, sure 'dwarfers' already have essays on this though :)
I was so excited for series 7 it started strong but rimmer leaving it made me stop enjoying it....those 4 guys played off eachother ya take one away and the whole thing falls apart
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
A good bit of sci fi writing I thought especially the plan to blow up the time drive.
Anyway Seasons 1-6 are great. Season 7 had a few redeeming moments but overall wasn't that good and series 8 was just plain bad (bringing back the crew ruined it for me) and then the Easter special was awful except for the Blade runner parody they did.
well yeah, thats the point. it didnt go downhill after this. epideme was good, as was nanarchy. i also liked duct soup. but unlike the other seasons you couldnt enjoy every episode.
this was definately the last good season, but there was still a few good episodes after this. tikka to ride, stoke me a clipper, SOME of blue (the rimmer parts, not the kryten and kochanski parts.) and cassandra was pretty good.
yeah kryten was great in season 3-6 but in seven he lost everything that made him good, and his personality changed. he got better in series 8 though.
In Tikka to Ride I was a bit annoyed that Kryten wasn't his usual lovable self that he was in series 3-6. He was okay in Stoke me a Clipper. But once Kochanski stepped in it didn't really feel like Red Dwarf to me, no matter what people say. All the gags were related to sexual things and that wasn't really the Red Dwarf way, you know?
yeah in series 7 kryten was annoying. and you can all thumbs down me, but thats my opinion. he just didn't feel like kryten. and with the lack of rimmer, thats only half of the red dwarf crew.
I completely agree, once again. I'm not saying the gags weren't funny, but the pants draw and the salad cream and everything just went on a bit, and in the end I just wanted to step in and say "OK, now for something new, yeah?"
@afropower88 they might remember, after all, Lister remembers playing pool with planets when he shouldn't be able to. And at least we know what he did.
wow Rimmer actually came up with a plan that worked and was incredibly brave for him. too bad he was too late but it doesn't make too much difference the time drive was still destroyed.
my uncle (who got me into red dwarf) convinced me this was the end of the Red Dwarf...as in last episode i was crying...thankfully my teacher told me about the next seasons :) he was a meanie LOL
An rare, possibly unique moment where Rimmer willingly chooses to fight in the face of certain death. Quite out of place in Red Dwarf, but still quite cool. Still, I think they could have spared at least 1 model shot to show the two ships exchanging fire.
That funny jolt at 0.16 made me think that the cliffhanger was gonna be explained as an unreality bubble, i have a feeling that's what they were planning, then they probably went for the one they went for at the last second
Rimmer actually... DOES SOMETHING GOOD FOR ONCE!!!???? Well thats a change. I see where he is coming from though. Better dead than smeg is what i live by now!
Nanobots recreate Red Dwarf + crew and then some virus melts the ship + Rimmer. Everyone else escaped into space. XD Poor Rimmer. What a smeghead XD XD
Right, but everyone assumed he was dead because the ship was melting and Death was still 'alive' and could track him down and strangle the smeg-face XD XD
They tried to make a full length movie, in fact, it's been in the works, but they can't come up with the funds. Sadly. That's why the very last episode is such a big freakin' cliff-hanger x.x
hes an hologram, how does he pick up a bazookoid. i love red dwarf, should be called red flaw. i have them all on dvd, i am compelled to watch on a regular basis.
One thing that really gets you at the fact that the beginning of this episode, Rimmer was berating the crew, and at the ending, he's risking life and limb to save them.
i really liked that rimmer did something heroic. you can see the growth his character went through in the first 6 series. not extreme changes mind, but some growth as a person. that's one of the issues i have with series 8. i do like it well enough, as i can't NOT like anythig red dwarf, but bringing rimmer back as they did, it wipes out all the growth the character had gone through, and starts him from scratch. still, no matter what, it's still chris barrie, and he's always worth watching!
It doesn't really wipe it all out as the first Rimmer became Ace and is still out there (although he probably smegged it up).
And you can even look at series 8 and say that they do work together to quite a extent. Obviously that's partly because they're in the Tank, and there's no-one else who particularly cares about Rimmer....
But admit it, Lister would drive anyone nuts with sexual magnetism virus pouring, Canary enlisting, and of course his guitar "skills"...
Umm... They made 2 more series after this one, so I'd say so:P - The long explananation is that by the past selves been destroyed, the future selves never existed, and therefor were never able to put the past selves into that position, therefore making the entire episode irrelevant and returning the crew & starbug back to its former glory. Now don't try filming yourself explaining it, that's all. It's the camera, y'see - they just cant handle it
yeah but if the future crew no longer existed to go back in time and kill themself in the past, then the present crew can't die right? but, hang on if the present crew are alive and well, then they can become there future selves and kill themeselves in the present, but they can, but they cant, but they can, but they cant. ect ect ad infinitum+1
so basicly when they die when they're their future selves because their present selves were killed the future crew become the past crew. they can never die
ahhh, hmm well, maybe now the cast dont want to do the film....who knows, i dunno maybe a film outta it would be cool, all depends on if the cast want to do it
I heard that their increasing age is a possible factor against making a film, the series began in 1988, and the characters aren't really meant to be that much older now than then... though obviously the actors are...
agreed, well i guess for Robert (actor for kryten) it might not be much of a factor as he's in a suit anyway. also another factor could be how would they start it off coz the very last ever episode was left with just rimmer on a destructing red dwarf and the cure thingy was burning, so tha could be a factor in how to start it, and how to get rimmer off the burning ship
If I were to make it (I wish!) I'd start from the beginning again and do a movie based on the first Red Dwarf Novel - "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers"
Hells yes. And if it's a success there are at least 2 more books to base sequels on! 3 possibly though if you know the series of books it may not work to base a film on all of them...
I think the only problem would be that the novels were slightly more serious, so fans may get dissapointed...
ahh yeh, and also being serious the younger fans might not get most of it, well depends if the parents will let them watch it i suppose, but yeh there may be a part of a disappointment as the last 8 series always brought lauhter to people
I dunno, I for one would love to see them just plain ol' find a new cast to bring on and do some RD comedy films based off the books'n such. Hell, if they're takin' all these old series and making movies from them with new actors (Get Smart, Dukes of Hazard etcetera) why not just do it with Red Dwarf?
you cant do red dwarf with a new cast, it wont work. people loved red dwarf because the actors playng their characters so well, other people will just....wont be the same, a new lister just wont be lister, cat just wont be cat, rimmer wont be rimmer and kryten wont be kryten. if the message comes through, plus using actors in dukes of hazard i deff wont watch it, i was left very unimpressed my dukes of hazard so if the actors became the new RD cast, it'd turn out like the american piolet
I personally think that the series is capable of standing on the merit of the original writers' ability. I respect that you, personally, would not endorse it. But I'd deal with new actors for more sci-fi comedy in the vein of RD. I'd love to see an animated version, see if they couldn't get whomever was willing from the original cast to do voices then just replace those who think they're "too good" to keep playing their roles.
well i can see where ur coming from, i just think that if they replaced the cast with new actors then it wouldnt be red dwarf, it'd be some re-make of it with none of the original actor's own humor and personality being played into the characters. which wouldnt make it the same. in my opinion i think if the original cast want to do an extra several years on thing or the movie or whatever then that's good, but if they dont i think RD shuld be left to itself
I'm with you, a new cast would be crap. Personally, I've always thought they should do a film set ten years after the last Series. That would make sense and it would be fun to see an aged Lister and Cat still trying to be young. They've all aged rather well anyway.
Of all the remakes of TV shows, have any of them been remotely GOOD? I can't think of any. They've already tried a remake of Red Dwarf with an Americanized cast, and that's something that's best forgotten. A newer, lamer knockoff of Red Dwarf wouldn't be any better. If they can't continue with the original cast, they shouldn't continue at all. Why even consider a different cast? If they still bring the funny, who will actually care that the cast members dared to age in the twenty years?
I owe it all to Rimmer.
