OH NO THE SACRED CARDBOARD TASTING WAFER THAT HAS BEEN MAGICALLY TRANSFORMED INTO THE FLESH OF A DEAD 2000 YEAR OLD JUDEAN MAN HAS BEEN DESECRATED! BURN HER AT STAKE FOR HER DISRESPECT OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!
lol this is what people are getting pissed about? How about you get pissed at something worth while, like what the priest is doing to the altar boy in the back room while this service went on.
0:17 the erection of penis christ brings blessed orgasm! receive into you his body and receive unto your tongues the sacred liquid of life. praise lord penis christ!
I find both the video and the annotation to idiotic. If atheists are to have respect from christians, then what could possibly be the point in making fun of their religious practises in their own place of worship? Just leave them to theirs.
@ThatGuyWhoSucksBoobz You teach someone to disrespect someone because they are different than you. It will lead to the activity as described in my previous posts. You teach a child to denigrate someone because of their beliefs they will have a seed of hatred born that will lead to destructive acts sooner or later. From race, religion, and other hostility. These biases and hatreds are taught. You teach hatred they will hate.
@ThatGuyWhoSucksBoobz Yes thats exactly how people such as yourself justify your misdeeds. Oh it's just bread. Thats how it starts first you defile the ceremonies and then you defile the sanctuaries. You would claim the moral high ground? This shows more than ever how wrong all of you are.
@ThatGuyWhoSucksBoobz I am a protestant but I understand their anger. Holy communion has been done through most Churches in honor of Christ for his sacrifice and dying on the Cross in our place. It has been done as a remembrance. He was broken on the cross in our place he shed his blood that we may have remission of sins. They desecrated their worship service. This is the height of disrespect. What next will they be spray painting grafiti on the church building?
Oh, and it's not a cracker, it's a wafer. Crackers are crunchy and salty and actually taste good. Communion wafers are spongy, not crunchy at all, have no flavor, and are so dry they're hard to swallow. I remember how surprised and disappointed I was the first time I had to eat one. From a distance they almost looked like flat candies when I was little.
Oh man. I was raised Catholic and I'm getting a touch of PTSD just watching this. Imagine being dragged out of bed at the crack of dawn every Sunday morning as a little kid and being forced to sit though this terribly long and mind numbingly boring drivel about how you will never be worthy of an asshole god. Apparently Jesus was very bland and dry and tasted like shit. In the bible at least they got actual bread that was probably fresh baked and delicious. Even as a child I felt totally gypped.
Man how could you stand being in there for longer than it took to get the communion wafer...
I was forced into church at various schools and spent most of it getting in enough trouble to get "thrown out" so I didn't have to rot my brain and die from listening to too much boring hypocrisy nonsense.
And lol at people having a winge over this... "myeaah myeeeaaaaah morals myeaaaah sin myeeeeaaaaaaaah hell"
Threatening others with eternal torture shows more about your morals than your magic book.
All believers are hostages to a belief system that is just ridiculous. You are being held hostage against what should be your free will.
Your free will as n individual is paramount to your self respect as a human being.Being told what to believe goes against all that is your right as a human being ,just be yourself and you will find that you have more strength as an individual than that of a collective.
@DaedalEVE What you're describing just sounds like a basic sense of ethics that any decent person should have. You're just arbitrarily deciding to attribute those ethics to Catholicism.
But okay I take back the word "anything." Let's just say "any doctrine/dogma" in Catholicism.
@DaedalEVE If you take anything in Catholicism seriously you're a fool. Why is the idea of transubstantiation any more absurd than the idea of original sin or the trinity or the resurrection of Jesus? It's not. It's all ridiculous. If you do consider yourself Catholic, you're just picking and choosing what parts of Catholicism you want to believe in and what parts you don't. The church wouldn't be too happy with you...
Eucharist is a symbol & reminder. Take Christ into yourself, imitate Him. He was altruistic enough to die for us, and we should be altruistic too. And everyone else has Christ in them, and to not love them is as bad as not loving Christ. I don't even think most Catholics believe Eucharist is literally transformed, although some may believe It has supernatural medicinal qualities. It's a meaningful ritual for those of us in the Catholic culture.
Well sure, I'm sure most people do take them as symbols, but official Catholic doctrine says that they're not. Why don't you look it up... transubstantiation.
LMAO. So funny. I remember the Catholic doctrine of "transubstantiation," i.e. that the bread and the wine are LITERALLY the body and blood of J-man, being one of my a-ha moments in 7th grade, leading me to reject religion.
Yea, I don't get what anybody is so pissed off about. No big deal.
In high school I had to go with a friends family to a couple of those services. I never ate the cracker. Actually I had a little bit of road rage once right after the service and threw my jesus cracker at the guy in the other car.
@hevyAccel you know you're going to hell right? because jesus don't take kindly to those who dont take kindly to him, and to those who love dipping him in salad dressing or putting cheese wiz on top. also does eating the body of christ mean passing the body of christ in the biblical sense? i mean jesus being flushed, now thats a fantastic theological debate.
I found it quite offensive as a filipino, that she has a bank account in the philippines. Get your money somewhere else where the interests are higher dear.
And as an ex-catholic, ive done much worse, like things that involve crackers and fighting cocks. And being the cute ladies that those three are, Im quite sure the men in that church wouldnt mind.
When my parents receive communion, they allow the priest to put the "body of christ" in their mouth. I settle for it being place in my hand.. I can just imagine where the priest's hand has been previously.
At least in the Romanian Orthodox church they use a spoon. Of course they DO NOT CHANGE THE SPOON. There were instances where people bring their own or use single-use spoons but in general is it's frowned upon as worldly concerns should be discarded in the church! Think of all the saliva swapping...
@Blackthorn2323 Yeah, they also have a cup to drink out of that supposed to be the blood of christ? I don't fuckin' know. After someone drinks out of it, they just wipe it with a cloth.......like that's supposed to do something with germs I guess?
With all the scandals going on in the catholic church, I predict they will allow priests to get married. I'm a child abuse victim (forced to go to church against my will). I was baptized by a priest who later went to prison for molesting boys. Luckily, I refused my parents request to be an alter boy.
I am in theory ex-Orthodox. I studied religion in school with a priest since the first grade, it would be an understatement to say that my folks are agnostic yet I remember my mother telling me NOT to make fun of prayer. Transmutation IS a big deal for them, there is no point in mocking it. Also since you are in the UK you should know better. At least in the orthodox church you are supposed to fast and pray and confess before you take the bread. Please don't negate their effort for fun .
coming from someone who's frankly turned off by factvsreligion's overall demeanor and arrogance, I still can't help but question just what is it about this vid thats so controversial.
If Catholicism is directly related to Nazism or; as Christopher Hitchens puts it: "Nazism is the right-arm of the Catholic church" (paraphrased) - does this mean that the eugenics program based on Social Darwinism
implemented in Nazi Germany is really just the left-arm of evolutionary biology and the scientist who espouse it?
I'm bowing out for at least a while. I've PM'd Laura and gotten no response. I've put a lot of comments in and PMs over the last few days and can't afford more time for it. I hope you won't miss me, and I'm sure some wise atheists will mock and deride me. Just wait and read. If somebody steps on my foot, I yelp, and they say Oh, gee sorry, then keeps the pressure on and asks for applause, then says "you're not being logical"... well. That's as far as I can get with this.
So, you're saying I'm not allowed to express any opinion that differs from yours? The "20-something" -- as someone called Laura -- who made this, wrote "I am absolutely disgusted with the way some atheists have responded" apparently to express her disapproval of a distinct lack of support shown for her initiative. Your contribution is basically, "shut up because I don't understand your argument." Roger that.
@kgpfraser, you're going 'round in circles with that logic. The whole "So I can't have an opinion, you're telling me to shutup, blah blah blah." or "You talk about free speech but then you insult me" well that is exactly what opinions and free speech is for. Someone tells you your opinion is worthless, you either shutup, or give them another opinion about them. You complaining is just asking people to shutup in a whiney way.
@Stromatolite577 If the consecrated host was taken by betraying the trust of the priest who gave it to her, that was a mockery through a bad-faith action. The graphics and music were salt to rub into any wounded Catholic sensibilities. Her written comments and next video complained about atheist commenters disagreeing with her for acting in bad faith by tricking trusting Catholic worshippers at a Mass. Could a video designed to mock something deeply loved and shared freely hurt any feelings?
An offense grasped or not was the filmmaker's deceptive pose, conspiring to break a trust. Catholics argue the only important One offended is Christ. Non-believers insist non-belief insulates against bad faith motives. Enough argued such rudeness is unbecoming an authentic humanist, that the filmmaker registered her disappointment in their "double standard" - objecting to their disagreement with her hoped-for 'beating of the head, small enough to fit the hat.' (apologies to Chesterton) Fair?
@kgpfraser To describe this video as bullying is to redefine the word bully to the point where it no longer has any meaning. If the largest church in the world can be bullied by a 2 minute video edited by a twenty-something year old girl, then it's in worse condition than I imagined. If you feel "bullied" by this video, then I recommend you not watch it. I will however admit that the Catholic church needs no help in looking absurd.
Sorry I must have run out of YT comment chars. You are of course right. The notion that anyone could pull off bullying the mystical body of Christ is indeed absurd. No, the bullying is by the filmmaker, directed to any individual who learns of it, and no matter how excused, is in response to holding beliefs and sensibilities she disagrees with. She says it's "to be absurd." Nonsense. Her film slaps each faithful Catholic in the face. Thanks. She's apparently disappointed by the lack of applause.
@kgpfraser Allow me to rephrase then: if the collective "body of Christ" the members of the Catholic church, can be bullied by a 2 minute video (only 10 seconds of which could be viewed as mildly offensive) edited by a twenty-something year old girl, then that group as a whole is absurdly frail and prone towards over-reaction. I do admit that the offense was in fact intended, but also (IMHO) deserved.
Let me expand on AlexSlams, a professed atheist, below. If a child believes something unbelievable, which is the bullying: preserving their contentment by not siezing (by real or edited means) the object of their love for mockery, or of creating a mockery of their belief. Bullying is always against an individual, not a collective. That's why it offends individuals who understand the offense. Some people like that offense to be given--bullying--but apparently a lot of atheists here didn't.
@kgpfraser That you get into a complete tizzy over absurdly minor incidents now that you're no longer allowed to torture and kill people who disagree with you.
@kgpfraser I don't suggest that the last 10 seconds of this video was intended to be anything other than mockery. Again, I just suggest it to be deserved. You are free to pretend that all criticism of you church is nothing more than unwarranted bullying if you'd like, but to the rest of us, accepting the theology of transubstantiation is a hair's difference from a continued acceptance of the easter bunny.
You're fucking crazy Laura!!!! I should go to a catholic church and say that to the priest...
I like it also how all these catheters (sorry, I meant "Catholics") come watch a video that was intended to be silly and just cry about stupid shit...
Is your point that anyone who objects to this stunt has the wrong feelings according to your personal infallible definition of what feelings are right and what feelings are wrong? If so, how did you get that authority over everyone else?
I expected this to be at least _arguably_ offensive, but even in my believingest days as a Catholic I would have either shrugged or even found this mildly amusing. You did nothing to justify the whining that it's offensive. Comparing rapist priests to the Mei Lei massacre is stupid; civilized society agrees that those in the chain of command should have been held responsible. What have you done lately to hold YOUR vatican and the child rapists under its protection responsible?
I thought that the cracker represents the bread that Jesus Christ split with the disciples which also represents Jesus' body..and then the Wine he split was suppose to represent the Blood Of Jesus Christ..But im sure they wouldn't give out wine
@simsLegz92 Excellent questions. Catholics believe that holy communion is Christ offered by his own chosen sacrifice, as a non-bloody re-presentation, in a non sense-perceptible way. (?huh) This is all just off the table for anyone who denies meaning can exist outside the sense-perceptible. If someone gives me a present, and I purposely abuse it in a way that offends against the intentions of the person who gave it, my abuse is an objective injustice, and it will cause hurt feelings, maybe lots.
@kgpfraser A wafer of bread the size of a quarter now qualifies as a present. If someone gave me a wafer of bread as a "present", I would accept it with the same amount contempt that the gift was clearly intended to represent. Admittedly, I can't think of a better way to abuse the gift than sticking it in my mouth and swallowing it and thus subjecting it to a rather vile future.
Sorry, not being obstreperous, just don't follow what you mean by "same amount contempt that the gift was clearly intended to represent. " The rest of your comment only demonstrates a lack of familiarity with the theological explanation called 'transubstantiation' which admittedly a lot of Catholics don't understand either. There are some pretty humanistic atheists who have weighed in here. Some, not so much as we can see. Apparently Laura objects to atheists calling for good manners in public.
@kgpfraser I meant to suggest that if someone promised me a great gift and then handed me a cracker sized wafer of bread, I'd understand the act to be an indication of that individual's thoughts about my intelligence. I can assure you that I'm well educated in the theology of transubstantiation, and I can remember the moment when I finally rejected it as absurd.
If sitting quietly for 45 minutes can be considered "bad manners in public", then we're an extremely oversensitive lot aren't we.
Let me try again. The Mass includes a social dimension, and deserves good manners as much as anything else. Congregation trusted and invited them in good faith, without believing they intended any mockery. Tricking the priest was a bad-faith deception, by acting as a Catholic in state of grace. Host offered was accepted in bad faith. Video was apparently made after the Mass with clear intention to present one isolated aspect of Eucharist without context to encourage public mockery by like minded
@kgpfraser The Catholic Mass is about a social as a doctor's waiting room. You sit there for about 45 minutes interacting with nobody (ok you do shake hands with the people next to you) get you wafer and leave. Regardless, these people did nothing to disrupt the service (on the contrary they even assisted). I suspect that the majority of the people at the service have no idea that this video even exists. I do agree that they accepted the pressed wafer of bread, I just don't care.
Interesting aspects of the word 'present' in context: It's Christ, "present" under the appearance of bread and wine. If God has enough power to become incarnate as a human, what else would be difficult? It's also "a present" in sense of a gift offered freely by Christ, acting through an imperfect human priest, presenting or giving a present of Christ in the consecrated host to those who present themselves as being in a state of grace. (Implied covenant). Yeah, a lot of "present" aspects.
Every single comment here is a demonstration of religious belief in or against Christ's Real Presence in the Eucharist. Catholics choose yes, Atheists choose no. In both camps are people who don't fully understand their professed beliefs. In both camps are found the cruel-minded and the fair-minded. Fairness would be FactVsReligion returning the consecrated host that they took back to the priest who gave it to them, recording that encounter and posting it on YouTube, unedited.
I don't get what you are trying to achieve? Why can't you respect what other people believe rather than make fun of it. I'm an Athiest but if Religion helps a person and enhances their life they should be allowed to embrace it.
@AlexSlams thank you for being an intellectually honest and humanitarian Atheist. Your intent is for the whole well being of all others. You are arguing for respectfulness of others' beliefs. Here you see most people justifying and encouraging this cruel-heartedness by FactVsReligion. This entire stunt has a bad faith intent (in the strictly legal sense, please don't any Atheist whine about my use of the word 'faith' in context of reference to the legal concept of 'good faith' vs 'bad faith').
@AlexSlams Why can't you respect the notion that the belief that a priest can literally turn a piece of bread into a god is just flat out stupid and utterly undeserving of respect? These individuals did not disrupt the service they attended and Laura merely edited in a her "ransom demands" long after the fact. The incessant whining over this issue is sad, particularly from non-believers.
@agnosticsalvation I've never understood that to be the case - the eucharist REPRESENTS the bread passed out to Jesus' disciples at the last supper which itself REPRESENTED the body of Jesus Christ.
Either way, I respect anyone's belief, even though, in my opinion, some people's beliefs are a little off the wall (Latter Day Saints anyone?). There is no wrong or right in the world of faith/religion/atheism.... it's just a 'right for me'. It's pathetic to say who is right or wrong.
@AlexSlams "There is no wrong or right in the world of faith/religion/atheism.... it's just a 'right for me'. It's pathetic to say who is right or wrong"
While I disagree with your statement, the fact of the matter is that it isn't even applicable to the situation. We're talking about 10 seconds of text edited into a video long after the fact. I think it's pathetic to get bent out of shape over such a minor incident and to sharply condemn a girl for having a little fun at no ones expense.
so is this what this crackergate bullshit is all about ? I am disappointed actually, where is the desecration or the bulling ? If you believe that a piece of water and flour is a person then you are insane. You may pour the good old religion syrup over it as much as you want, it is still crazy talk and if a person wants to make a joke about it, there is nothing wrong with it.
@tekhiun Your tactic is called 'gainsay' - ignore questions and deny assertions. Desecration is from the intent of the third thumbnail. You insulted me. Atheists believe there is no God. Atheists, like theists, have no sense-perceptible empirical proof that their faith about the existence of God is objectively true. If you want to be intellectually honest, respond to my examples instead of mocking. Mockery is pronouncement of insult without reason and it is nothing more.
@kgpfraser I have a tactic ? nice, I could swear that it was an impromptu comment at the time though. Anyway " Atheists believe there is no God": false, Atheists don't believe in god. I did not mock you I just pointed out something that you might have missed. And dont even talk about being intellectual honest when you project your preconceptions onto other people's actions (it rhymed :D).
@tekhiun You're trying to say "funny trumps faith" and it can't in a civil society. It's one thing to say "I don't believe Jesus Christ's promise," it's another altogether to slap someone to emphasize your point. One is an assertion, the other intends disrespect. Your "good old religion syrup" insult made your preference quite clear.
@kgpfraser nice that you ddnt even address anything i mentioned in my last comment, well again who got slapped in this video ? Did you even see one of them helping collecting the money from the service ? " You're trying to say "funny trumps faith" and it can't in a civil society " , well why not ? You don't think that is ridiculous that someone thinks that some flour and water is the part of someones body ?
@tekhiun Can you imagine how many people laughed at the Catholic victims of drawing and quartering in England? Does that mean it was funny? The only reason it happened to them was their refusal to renounce belief in Christ's presence in the Eucharist. They gave their lives in a painful way instead. Do you think that's funny because some people possessed the personal cruelty to laugh about it? Do you realize that you are arguing with me in support of a more cruel world?
@kgpfraser No Im not, making fun of things that don't make sense it is not cruel. If you think a lump of flour and water is person, well that is insane. I am not saying that to offend you, but because people that think a coconut is a person, are considered insane, and I see no reason to think otherwise just because it is part of a religion. It wasnt funny because people got killed for being deluded. No one here is inciting violence against religious people, just joking about something ridicul
@tekhiun That's great and I'd much rather be insane and stick to my beliefs. The fact that you don't believe does not allow you to see the offense in it.
If FactVsReligion thought they were doing nothing wrong, why did they sneak a peek at the Eucharist hidden in a hand? Why not wave it around over their head and shout hostage demands? No matter what FactVsReligion's infallible beliefs are about the Eucharist, there is no innocence in this. It's exactly as much an attack as playing keepaway with a kid's Yarmulkeh on a playground would be. You can delete my comment, but you can't change the facts or intent of your bullying, FVR. Shame on all this.
@finnsia according to whom is there nothing wrong in doing this? According to someone who thinks it's funny to mock religious beliefs? What if this stunt offends someone? What invalidates the offense given to them? You're saying it isn't possible to offend someone. I'm saying you're wrong. Who has the final say on what offends and what doesn't? I've already been warned by "tmm2yop" who is apparently with the thought police from the ministry of truth. Bypassing all my examples, interesting.
Your first sentence is just mean-spirited. This is no critique. A critique involves intellectual analysis. This is a couple of young people who think they are very smart because they crafted an insult for the purpose of offending Catholics according to their idea of a joke. There's a difference between criticism and attack. This has no purpose other than to cause feelings of hurt, and amusement from bullies. The irony is no accomplishment beside the bad faith intent to hurt others.
@tmm2yop Cool your jackboots. FactVsReligion thinks they targeted faithful Catholics for mockery according to their idea of a joke. At the very least this is a denial of respect due to others. If you walk into someone's living room, take something they give you and consider as precious as life itself, then create a cowardly "hold it hostage" video to get views, you will give offense to everyone who believes as they do. Try crafting an offense like this on Muslims. Brave enough for that, FactVsR?
@tekhiun No I haven't. I'm a Catholic who finds purposely hurtful stunts like this offensive, and who finds the wholehearted mean-spiritedness of most of the comments you and I can read below to be an unfortunate testament to bad manners on a massive scale. Thanks for skipping the bad language in defending your opinion.
@kgpfraser you said "I'm a Catholic who finds purposely hurtful stunts like this offensive"
Well I'm an atheist who find purposely hurtful stunts like the catholic religion offensive.
The difference is that these kids stole a cracker and Catholisism offends by being involved and complicit in : spreading aids, child sex abuse, child mental abuse, religious intollerance, homophobia, sexism, racism, anti semitism and many others.
Special pleading and name calling. How special. Does the Mei Lei Massacre prove all Americans are murderers? You speak as though the Catholic Church is the chief causality in these things. That implication doesn't square with the numbers. If one is aware of the overall "pie chart" breakdown of child abusers, for instance, by occupation, the only reason one would one waste time accusing the Church is an animus, or outright bigotry. Do you realize that you are screeching practiced atheist dogmas?
Not all Catholics are involved in "spreading aids, child sex abuse, child mental abuse, religious intollerance, homophobia, sexism, racism, anti semitism and many others." So don't generalize. There may be controversies that surround the Catholic faith but that will NOT stop me from believing in my religion. And please, explain how the Catholic religion is a "purposefully hurtful stunt"?
Actually I think that all catholics are involved in all these things. If you support and legitimise an organisation that carries out all of these activities then you are complicit in them. Its like saying "Not all members of the Nazi party actually gassed jews so the Nazi party ain't all bad". Whilst individual Nazi's/Catholics may not be evil the party/religion is.
How can I compare Catholics to Nazis? Lets see shall we
Both organisations have a bloody history of anti semitism
Both have systematically slaughtered jews
Both passed laws restricting the rights of Jews
Hilter was a Catholic
The current pope was a Nazi
In fact without the Catholic church laying the ground work with centuries of preaching Jew hatred the hollocaust would never have happend. Hilter, like good catholic boy that he was, only picked up on the work of the church.
Let's see, I have many Jewish friend who I have no problem with whatsoever.
I have never killed or hated any Jewish person. I would never hate them just because they were Jewish.
The current pope is not a Nazi, that's just a rumor. And just because Hitler was a Nazi does not mean that ALL Catholics are anti-semitists. The history of anti-semitism in the Catholic church is IN THE PAST, we can't stay in the past or else we won't have a future.
@laurita0913 Yeah Evilreligion, the Catholic church only used to killed jews and torture heretics, and sell indulgences and molest children, and burn witches, and launch wars of genocide; geeze man get over it, that's all in the past.
@agnosticsalvation But why are you blaming Catholic people NOW? I wasn't there and I'm sure others weren't there either. You can't condemn US for other people's actions in the past.
@laurita0913 I don't think I did blame you for those actions. Still I would personally find it difficult to maintain an association with an organization with such a horrific past. Can you imagine a modern day Nazi arguing that "sure the Nazi's used to kill people by the millions, but we don't do that any more"? Neither can I. The Catholic church is as much its past as its present, and honestly neither look good. God would certainly have distanced himself from such an organization long ago.
You asked me how I could compare the two organisations, I listed some of the similarities. The bigest one being both organisations extensive history of persecuting and killing Jews. Do you deny that the Catholic church was responsible of murdering countless thousands of innocent Jews just like the Nazi party?
There where plenty of Nazi's who never actually killed a jew but this does nothing to mitigate the fact that the Nazi party was responsible so it is with the Catholic church
@evilreligion I do not and will never deny that there was anti-semitism in the Catholic church. The point that I'm trying to make is that you can't generalize by saying that every Catholic is a Nazi (which is what you sound like you're saying). Just like you can't blame modern day Americans for enslaving African Americans in the 1800's, you can't blame me and other Catholics for the slaughtering of Jewish people back then; It doesn't make sense.
I never said every Catholic was a Nazi in fact I only mentioned two Catholic who where Nazi's the Pope and Hitler, we know that there where many Catholoc Nazi's but thats not the point I'm making here. I am comparring the evil of the two organisations. I maintain that the Nazi PARTY and the Catholic church are pretty equal when it comes to over all evillness. In fact I'd probably say the Catholic church have the edge in virtue of their longer history of cunty behaviour.
@kgpfraser: Offended by something on the internet? *gasps* no way!
What if I find your religion offensive? I can whine about how it offends me all i want, but that won't stop you being a catholic in the same way I still find this video funny.
You should try just loosening up and have a laugh. If you guys ever came up with a witty, fresh joke about atheism, I'd certainly laugh at it.
1) Why is respect 'due', religious choice is not deserving of any more respect than politics, sports, fashion, etc.
2) This isnt a living room, they did not trespass on property. They where invited in, and offered a cracker. you use the word 'take' to imply 'steal', when in fact it was offered.
3) Cowardly, your really stretching now. Its a joke, get over it.
You know, yeah, we should keep our freethinking out of church, when church keeps its religion out of our freethinking.
@chthonios If you live in the United States, the constitution assures freedom of religious practice to all without malicious interference. It's interesting to note that the "wall of separation" notion was coined by Jefferson in a letter to reassure people who had inquired, that the state (by extension all law-abiding citizens) nor any other entity would ever interfere in any way with their religious meetings and practices. That "wall" was intended to protect churchgoers from any meddling.
Ah but the 'hostage' was in a freeze frame at the end, its not like they held up a placard declaring a ransom and the amount to be paid. This was the joke part, and thats all it is (IMHO).
Sorry if the word cracker is offensive, it wasnt intended as such. on that score, taking offence is meaningless, only deliberatly causing offence concerns me. This is why I never resort to the inanity you see so often on utube.
State keeps out of religion, the same should be true in reverse.

You teach hatred they will hate.
vindicato15 1 year ago
@ThatGuyWhoSucksBoobz Yes thats exactly how people such as yourself justify your misdeeds. Oh it's just bread. Thats how it starts first you defile the ceremonies and then you defile the sanctuaries. You would claim the moral high ground? This shows more than ever how wrong all of you are.
vindicato15 1 year ago

Your free will as n individual is paramount to your self respect as a human being.Being told what to believe goes against all that is your right as a human being ,just be yourself and you will find that you have more strength as an individual than that of a collective.
Just be yourself

@DaedalEVE What you're describing just sounds like a basic sense of ethics that any decent person should have. You're just arbitrarily deciding to attribute those ethics to Catholicism.
But okay I take back the word "anything." Let's just say "any doctrine/dogma" in Catholicism.
lavieboheme68 1 year ago

At least in the orthodox church you are supposed to fast and pray and confess before you take the bread. Please don't negate their effort for fun .

Your contribution is basically, "shut up because I don't understand your argument." Roger that.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser, you're going 'round in circles with that logic. The whole "So I can't have an opinion, you're telling me to shutup, blah blah blah." or "You talk about free speech but then you insult me" well that is exactly what opinions and free speech is for. Someone tells you your opinion is worthless, you either shutup, or give them another opinion about them. You complaining is just asking people to shutup in a whiney way.
hoboboxerjoe 1 year ago
Why are you suggesting the idea of violence?
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@Stromatolite577 If the consecrated host was taken by betraying the trust of the priest who gave it to her, that was a mockery through a bad-faith action. The graphics and music were salt to rub into any wounded Catholic sensibilities. Her written comments and next video complained about atheist commenters disagreeing with her for acting in bad faith by tricking trusting Catholic worshippers at a Mass. Could a video designed to mock something deeply loved and shared freely hurt any feelings?
kgpfraser 1 year ago
An offense grasped or not was the filmmaker's deceptive pose, conspiring to break a trust. Catholics argue the only important One offended is Christ. Non-believers insist non-belief insulates against bad faith motives. Enough argued such rudeness is unbecoming an authentic humanist, that the filmmaker registered her disappointment in their "double standard" - objecting to their disagreement with her hoped-for 'beating of the head, small enough to fit the hat.' (apologies to Chesterton) Fair?
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser To describe this video as bullying is to redefine the word bully to the point where it no longer has any meaning. If the largest church in the world can be bullied by a 2 minute video edited by a twenty-something year old girl, then it's in worse condition than I imagined. If you feel "bullied" by this video, then I recommend you not watch it. I will however admit that the Catholic church needs no help in looking absurd.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago
Sorry I must have run out of YT comment chars. You are of course right. The notion that anyone could pull off bullying the mystical body of Christ is indeed absurd. No, the bullying is by the filmmaker, directed to any individual who learns of it, and no matter how excused, is in response to holding beliefs and sensibilities she disagrees with. She says it's "to be absurd." Nonsense. Her film slaps each faithful Catholic in the face. Thanks. She's apparently disappointed by the lack of applause.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser Allow me to rephrase then: if the collective "body of Christ" the members of the Catholic church, can be bullied by a 2 minute video (only 10 seconds of which could be viewed as mildly offensive) edited by a twenty-something year old girl, then that group as a whole is absurdly frail and prone towards over-reaction. I do admit that the offense was in fact intended, but also (IMHO) deserved.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago
Let me expand on AlexSlams, a professed atheist, below. If a child believes something unbelievable, which is the bullying: preserving their contentment by not siezing (by real or edited means) the object of their love for mockery, or of creating a mockery of their belief. Bullying is always against an individual, not a collective. That's why it offends individuals who understand the offense. Some people like that offense to be given--bullying--but apparently a lot of atheists here didn't.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
Your ..."then that group as a whole is absurdly frail and prone towards over-reaction" has an unstated implication. What is your implication?
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser That you get into a complete tizzy over absurdly minor incidents now that you're no longer allowed to torture and kill people who disagree with you.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago
@kgpfraser I don't suggest that the last 10 seconds of this video was intended to be anything other than mockery. Again, I just suggest it to be deserved. You are free to pretend that all criticism of you church is nothing more than unwarranted bullying if you'd like, but to the rest of us, accepting the theology of transubstantiation is a hair's difference from a continued acceptance of the easter bunny.

I thought that the cracker represents the bread that Jesus Christ split with the disciples which also represents Jesus' body..and then the Wine he split was suppose to represent the Blood Of Jesus Christ..But im sure they wouldn't give out wine
simsLegz92 1 year ago
@simsLegz92 Excellent questions. Catholics believe that holy communion is Christ offered by his own chosen sacrifice, as a non-bloody re-presentation, in a non sense-perceptible way. (?huh) This is all just off the table for anyone who denies meaning can exist outside the sense-perceptible. If someone gives me a present, and I purposely abuse it in a way that offends against the intentions of the person who gave it, my abuse is an objective injustice, and it will cause hurt feelings, maybe lots.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser A wafer of bread the size of a quarter now qualifies as a present. If someone gave me a wafer of bread as a "present", I would accept it with the same amount contempt that the gift was clearly intended to represent. Admittedly, I can't think of a better way to abuse the gift than sticking it in my mouth and swallowing it and thus subjecting it to a rather vile future.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago
Sorry, not being obstreperous, just don't follow what you mean by "same amount contempt that the gift was clearly intended to represent. " The rest of your comment only demonstrates a lack of familiarity with the theological explanation called 'transubstantiation' which admittedly a lot of Catholics don't understand either. There are some pretty humanistic atheists who have weighed in here. Some, not so much as we can see. Apparently Laura objects to atheists calling for good manners in public.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser I meant to suggest that if someone promised me a great gift and then handed me a cracker sized wafer of bread, I'd understand the act to be an indication of that individual's thoughts about my intelligence. I can assure you that I'm well educated in the theology of transubstantiation, and I can remember the moment when I finally rejected it as absurd.
If sitting quietly for 45 minutes can be considered "bad manners in public", then we're an extremely oversensitive lot aren't we.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago
Let me try again. The Mass includes a social dimension, and deserves good manners as much as anything else. Congregation trusted and invited them in good faith, without believing they intended any mockery. Tricking the priest was a bad-faith deception, by acting as a Catholic in state of grace. Host offered was accepted in bad faith. Video was apparently made after the Mass with clear intention to present one isolated aspect of Eucharist without context to encourage public mockery by like minded
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser The Catholic Mass is about a social as a doctor's waiting room. You sit there for about 45 minutes interacting with nobody (ok you do shake hands with the people next to you) get you wafer and leave. Regardless, these people did nothing to disrupt the service (on the contrary they even assisted). I suspect that the majority of the people at the service have no idea that this video even exists. I do agree that they accepted the pressed wafer of bread, I just don't care.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago

AlexSlams 1 year ago
@AlexSlams thank you for being an intellectually honest and humanitarian Atheist. Your intent is for the whole well being of all others. You are arguing for respectfulness of others' beliefs. Here you see most people justifying and encouraging this cruel-heartedness by FactVsReligion. This entire stunt has a bad faith intent (in the strictly legal sense, please don't any Atheist whine about my use of the word 'faith' in context of reference to the legal concept of 'good faith' vs 'bad faith').
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@AlexSlams Why can't you respect the notion that the belief that a priest can literally turn a piece of bread into a god is just flat out stupid and utterly undeserving of respect? These individuals did not disrupt the service they attended and Laura merely edited in a her "ransom demands" long after the fact. The incessant whining over this issue is sad, particularly from non-believers.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago

I think it's pathetic to get bent out of shape over such a minor incident and to sharply condemn a girl for having a little fun at no ones expense.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago
so is this what this crackergate bullshit is all about ? I am disappointed actually, where is the desecration or the bulling ? If you believe that a piece of water and flour is a person then you are insane. You may pour the good old religion syrup over it as much as you want, it is still crazy talk and if a person wants to make a joke about it, there is nothing wrong with it.
tekhiun 1 year ago
@tekhiun Your tactic is called 'gainsay' - ignore questions and deny assertions. Desecration is from the intent of the third thumbnail. You insulted me. Atheists believe there is no God. Atheists, like theists, have no sense-perceptible empirical proof that their faith about the existence of God is objectively true. If you want to be intellectually honest, respond to my examples instead of mocking. Mockery is pronouncement of insult without reason and it is nothing more.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser I have a tactic ? nice, I could swear that it was an impromptu comment at the time though. Anyway " Atheists believe there is no God": false, Atheists don't believe in god. I did not mock you I just pointed out something that you might have missed. And dont even talk about being intellectual honest when you project your preconceptions onto other people's actions (it rhymed :D).
tekhiun 1 year ago
@tekhiun You're trying to say "funny trumps faith" and it can't in a civil society. It's one thing to say "I don't believe Jesus Christ's promise," it's another altogether to slap someone to emphasize your point. One is an assertion, the other intends disrespect. Your "good old religion syrup" insult made your preference quite clear.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser nice that you ddnt even address anything i mentioned in my last comment, well again who got slapped in this video ? Did you even see one of them helping collecting the money from the service ? " You're trying to say "funny trumps faith" and it can't in a civil society " , well why not ? You don't think that is ridiculous that someone thinks that some flour and water is the part of someones body ?
tekhiun 1 year ago
@tekhiun Can you imagine how many people laughed at the Catholic victims of drawing and quartering in England? Does that mean it was funny? The only reason it happened to them was their refusal to renounce belief in Christ's presence in the Eucharist. They gave their lives in a painful way instead. Do you think that's funny because some people possessed the personal cruelty to laugh about it? Do you realize that you are arguing with me in support of a more cruel world?
kgpfraser 1 year ago
@kgpfraser No Im not, making fun of things that don't make sense it is not cruel. If you think a lump of flour and water is person, well that is insane. I am not saying that to offend you, but because people that think a coconut is a person, are considered insane, and I see no reason to think otherwise just because it is part of a religion. It wasnt funny because people got killed for being deluded. No one here is inciting violence against religious people, just joking about something ridicul
tekhiun 1 year ago
@tekhiun That's great and I'd much rather be insane and stick to my beliefs. The fact that you don't believe does not allow you to see the offense in it.

Bypassing all my examples, interesting.
kgpfraser 1 year ago
When you see a person believing in something rediculous, then it should be ridiculed.
They are up for equal critique as anything else. Religion should not ever get immunity from criticism.
finnsia 1 year ago
Your first sentence is just mean-spirited. This is no critique. A critique involves intellectual analysis. This is a couple of young people who think they are very smart because they crafted an insult for the purpose of offending Catholics according to their idea of a joke. There's a difference between criticism and attack. This has no purpose other than to cause feelings of hurt, and amusement from bullies. The irony is no accomplishment beside the bad faith intent to hurt others.
kgpfraser 1 year ago

Fuck your evil religion.

@evilreligion 'Special pleading' responds to you.

@evilreligion IT'S NOT A CRACKER SO STOP CALLING IT THAT!
laurita0913 1 year ago
Not all Catholics are involved in "spreading aids, child sex abuse, child mental abuse, religious intollerance, homophobia, sexism, racism, anti semitism and many others." So don't generalize. There may be controversies that surround the Catholic faith but that will NOT stop me from believing in my religion. And please, explain how the Catholic religion is a "purposefully hurtful stunt"?
laurita0913 1 year ago
@laurita0913
Actually I think that all catholics are involved in all these things. If you support and legitimise an organisation that carries out all of these activities then you are complicit in them. Its like saying "Not all members of the Nazi party actually gassed jews so the Nazi party ain't all bad". Whilst individual Nazi's/Catholics may not be evil the party/religion is.
evilreligion 1 year ago
@evilreligion How can you compare Catholics to Nazis? Now you're just making stuff up to continue this argument.
laurita0913 1 year ago
@laurita0913
Hilter, like good catholic boy that he was, only picked up on the work of the church.
evilreligion 1 year ago
So I'm a Nazi?
Let's see, I have many Jewish friend who I have no problem with whatsoever.
I have never killed or hated any Jewish person. I would never hate them just because they were Jewish.
The current pope is not a Nazi, that's just a rumor. And just because Hitler was a Nazi does not mean that ALL Catholics are anti-semitists. The history of anti-semitism in the Catholic church is IN THE PAST, we can't stay in the past or else we won't have a future.
laurita0913 1 year ago
@laurita0913 Yeah Evilreligion, the Catholic church only used to killed jews and torture heretics, and sell indulgences and molest children, and burn witches, and launch wars of genocide; geeze man get over it, that's all in the past.
agnosticsalvation 1 year ago
@agnosticsalvation But why are you blaming Catholic people NOW? I wasn't there and I'm sure others weren't there either. You can't condemn US for other people's actions in the past.
laurita0913 1 year ago
@laurita0913 I don't think I did blame you for those actions. Still I would personally find it difficult to maintain an association with an organization with such a horrific past. Can you imagine a modern day Nazi arguing that "sure the Nazi's used to kill people by the millions, but we don't do that any more"? Neither can I. The Catholic church is as much its past as its present, and honestly neither look good. God would certainly have distanced himself from such an organization long ago.

@laurita0913
You asked me how I could compare the two organisations, I listed some of the similarities. The bigest one being both organisations extensive history of persecuting and killing Jews. Do you deny that the Catholic church was responsible of murdering countless thousands of innocent Jews just like the Nazi party?
There where plenty of Nazi's who never actually killed a jew but this does nothing to mitigate the fact that the Nazi party was responsible so it is with the Catholic church
evilreligion 1 year ago
@evilreligion I do not and will never deny that there was anti-semitism in the Catholic church. The point that I'm trying to make is that you can't generalize by saying that every Catholic is a Nazi (which is what you sound like you're saying). Just like you can't blame modern day Americans for enslaving African Americans in the 1800's, you can't blame me and other Catholics for the slaughtering of Jewish people back then; It doesn't make sense.
laurita0913 1 year ago
@laurita0913

@kgpfraser
