no we dont know who is faster e.g. when you start running you dont automatically run full speed. mario was running full speed but the shell was gaining momentum and accelerating. so it wasnt quite full speed yet. this is my explanation. still funny that you died like that though

I do it all the time. Mario is actually running faster then the shell, and since the game is programmed to hurt Mario when he touches the side of the shell after its been kicked, mario gets hurt, or, in your case, dies.
