when i first watched this, i thought maria and tony were so boring. but i was obsessed with the chemistry between anita and bernardo. they make a cute couple.
@yamahedp I like Glee's version too especially Santana's performance, but they can't hold a candle to the original, but Santana come pretty close. IMO
It's 50yrs later to the year and this song still resonates many of the feelings that a lot of american, american immigrants, and americans descended from immigrants still have today. Some of us love and appreciate this country while others do nothing but gripe about the injustices. It's good to see both sides, but at the end of the day you have to appreciate this country for what it is and make the best of it. If you hate it so much, why not just leave?
@thelonelyslayer Sometimes people simply don't have the means to leave. I heard a Russian guy once complaining about his own native country and remarked, "if I could leave, I would leave right away."
When you've grown up on a dead end street, been to war in foreign lands, loved the girl of your dreams & watched her take her last breath ... this masterpiece of love, life, joy & pain ~all in song & beauty~ is an ingenious creation of your soul on screen. When will this world ever learn to enjoy the great diversity we may offer each other; without hate & insult <3 Natalie Wood
@iPoppinshow And that's probably only based on the fact that you're a glee fan and that the glee version was the first one you saw before even seeing this clip of the original. The glee version was a good take, but this 61 film was the original and still holds up tremendously to this day.
My brother came into the room while I was playing this and snorted. Then he started watching, and stood there for the whole song with a weird smile on his face. Then when it was over, and I looked at him, he pretended like he didn't like it and walked away.
I really like the whole song after 1;50 ! The cheerings , the moves and the music make the whole things awesome !from 2;56 to 3;16 , I can totally imagine the cameraman pushing his camera on the floor without any other professional material , with another camera angle that passage could have been so great...But that not important , it's still awesome !
This clip is probably 50 years old seeing that West Side Story won Best Picture in 1961. Still brings the goods home, and is a classic for the music, choreography, and cinematography. I disagree with the negative comments posted here with respect to the dialect, camera shots, and where it should start. Watch the whole movie to appreciate the time and efforts of all that made West Side Story a timeless American classic as an urban update of the Bard's Romeo and Juliet.
I agree, West Side Story is an American musical classic & was at the time, a very modern rendition of Shakespeare's love story. You are right about all the efforts & labors invested to bring this movie the success it deserve;. some of Hollywood & Broadway's most talented artists contributed to this masterpiece. Artistically, WS Story is the most praised musical of all times, receiving the highest number of Academy Awards for a musical to this day, with 10 wins including Best Picture.
I think it's conceivable that that is on purpose, giving the scene a less totally stagey feel, keeps the scene feeling lively and a bit messy. I actually like it. It's what makes Bob Fosse's directing so genius in 'Cabaret'. Then again maybe it's a mistake.
See, i too enjoy Cabaret for its unneatness, yet in a major dance sceen like this it just kinda pulls me out like when your watching something in the distance thats really cool then someone gets in the way. i find it slightly irritating.
I think it's definitely on purpose. It reminds me of dance scenes in Bollywood movies-- they always have people running in front of the camera, or pillars in the way, so you don't forget it's a scene, not a stage show. Check out Yeh Ladka Hai Allah which is from a 2001 Hindi film: /watch?v=xSznZoLgELw
its the men who were watching the girls dance, they were recording from a camera that was close to the floor, so what, they blocked one/ two people, it doesnt mater.
