"It's a lesson by now you should have been taught." Great line, and something I keep thinking every time I hear somebody talking about rivers and other resources as if they are just there to profit from. I like that this song says what it says with kindness. It isn't in your face, it's by your side, saying hey, now, have you really thought about this? Great work on this, Stan. Looks like this song is from awhile back. Still stands up, I think.
How well I remember floating down the Stanislaus in truck inner tubes, marveling at the petroglyphs, and sitting as the Indian women must have done at the grinding rocks high above the river in the shimmering heat of a summer day.
Late in the afternoon, we would climb up the sand of the tailings of a mine and roll down to the waters edge.
@mongasb Thanks for sharing your memories of that wonderful river. Friends of the River just celebrated 30 years since that fight but the good news is that because of those efforts the Stanislaus might be the last river we loose. I hope so.
Thanks so much! Yes that's me with Jack. He had a gig the next day so I wrote him a set list and he played it for us around the campfire that night. That was probably 10 or 15 years ago.
Thanks Mishel! Last weekend I played the song in Angel's Camp at an event called the Spirit of the Stanislaus held by Friends of the River. I saw New Melones Lake for the first time and it was heart wrenching.
As i sit here at my computer in Forestville i smile seeing the Stan again and remembering all the amazing adventures I had floating down her water and exploring along her shores with ETC. What a beautiful song!
Are some of those pictures ones of her now? I haven't been back ...... Thanks for sharing. Barbra Friedman
Thanks Barbara! I have some fond menories of the Stanislaus too, mostly backpacking. She taught me about how rivers get higher as the day wears on from all that snow melting. The pics are of the Gualala, another beautiful CA river.

@songblurred Thanks so much Don for sharing those thoughts. The song was about one particular river but applies to all of them.
