  • Great lessons, but Peter Wolf wants his shirt back ;-)

  • delineate.i had ti look that one up..nice lesson thanks

  • Nicolas Cage on guitar!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa XD

  • Nicolas Cage on guitar!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa XD

  • Cool Video

  • @realjuvelive : "suspended" means that you replace the 3rd with another interval.

For instance, for Asus4, you replace the 3rd (C#) with D

  • dream theater is the best band to ever walk the earth! there is no lie about that and probably never will be

  • wtf is up with the E5, thats some fuckin chord ya got there, looks like a root 5 and another root. 5 chord my ass more like a lame ass power chord, btw turn ur fuckin hat around ur too old to pull that shit.

  • @twinkie999

You have no authority here sir.

  • @SYSPrison who the fuck are you SYSPrison, go learn theory dipshit

  • @twinkie999

I know theory. I had an AP theory class in high school. Its what made me pretty much decide music isn't the way to go. Music for job = no. Music for fun = Sure.

  • cool dude

  • thats right, dream theater ROCKS!

  • Why it's called suspended ?

  • @realjuvelive If I were to guess, I'd say because it is "suspended" between a major and a minor sound.

  • Yep he does look a bit like a French Pastery chef but he he does a great job in teaching the guitar. What book on chord theory does he recommend?

  • Deville 210 and Fender Strat? Its like you know!

  • although im an expert level guitarist, i've chked a couple ov his lessons lately n i must admit that hez like the best teacher i;ve seen on net! ... he tells things v clearly hides nothing thats the best part of his lessons and tells everything with a big heart! ... u rock man! ...

  • Yep like others said, mentioning Dream Theater makes you legit in my book; haven't used suspended chords in my instrumentals much though.

  • Is it just me or does this guy look like the guy from mad tv?

  • See:"LOVE THING BY DOUGLAS"

    Very good too!

  • props for mentioning DT. good lesson dude.

  • ahh shutup D3m0nhunter719

  • I was just kidding dude :P

  • lol ok

  • Well done. I like the way you teach. Very easy to understand. Thank you.

  • nice strat it has the pickgaurd transfered on the headstock 2

  • John Petrucci " a black belt music theory" wow xD

"every guy in that band are monsters players"

    true, true

and DT is not progressive rock, is progressive metal

  • Didn't your mother ever tell you that you look retarded wearing a hat backwards?

  • Didn't your mother ever tell you that xo51xo is a symbol of idiot?

  • He's right. John Petrucci knows so much about music theory that it's ridiculous. The band has such creative melodies that they're such a joy to listen to over and over.

  • Yeah man , those suspended chords are key to achieving the full colorful spectrum of sound required to be a well rounded rhythym guitaist.

Timber in this case means it is the same key but a different expression of sound, kind of like the same scale but different intervals used and others left out.

  • excellent lesson

  • wtf is a timber? i think u mean timbre

  • this guy just broke out of prison to play sus-chords on youtube

  • lol! i just noticed he is wearing black and white stripes

  • hehe ^^

  • lol

  • rofl :)

  • haha that ecactly the first thing id do out of prison

  • okay im a total noob on guitar just star a few days ago can some1 gimme the link ur something to a vidio ur a site o teach how to play how to make the basic chors and theory stuff ,,,,

  • you just learn the major scale and count up the scale at the notes that are the 1st 3rd and 5th. then you take them notes and play them together and you get the chord for that scale

  • check out this channel, they do loads of stuff on basic and beginner material, look for pentatonic scales etc.

  • what does the numbers represent?sorry i'm still a newbie..

  • the numbers are a system of tablature. the first value represents the low e, the sixth value is the high e. The numbers are the frets being played, the X symbolizes a muting or not-playing of the string. good luck man

  • i must have a green belt in theory.

  • You get 5 stars for life for just mentioning DT!

  • lol!!! same here!

i was baffled when he was talking about Inversions ive never seen a online teacher talk about those,is there any lessons on counter points some where by this guy?

  • I agree, that was just what I was thinking about.

  • @yyztrooper Yes, sir!

  • You are a great teacher

  • DAVE ROCKZZZZZZZZZZZ!

  • good job

  • great vid, but what drove me nuts was his pronunciation of "timbre."

    It's pronounced "tamber" not "timber"

  • isnt that like a southerner thing?

like Caramel some say it Car-air-Mail lol

but its like Kaeremel....i dunno i blame my coffee

  • its a regional thing

  • i've been playing guitar for about 7 years, mostly by ear or tab. its little tips like this that can really improve a musicians songwriting techniques. if you aren't a guitar player, but want to be, just pick up a guitar and play... it sounds simple, but its not. it takes patience and time... and you will get frustrated, but keep hammering at it, watch these video's, and let your mind be a sponge.. and one day, it will just click. you'll understand, and all that practice will have paid off!!!!

  • Exactly

  • You're great.

At first you had around 1,000,000 cool points. Then you mentioned Dream Theater.. now you have like 5,000,000,000 cool points.

    :D

  • how long its need to play guitar to learn playing your songs you like?? reply me please :)

  • dude guitars not like that u cant just play it for a while and be amazing it takes time, u can play song u like in about 5 months if thats all ur trying to do but if u force yourself bak to the basics then in about a year or two maybe you be awesome

  • It would take like 1 - 3 years to relly rock on. Then you can play evrything you want, and i started to play guitar to learn ONE song, and now... I dont rock, but i learned music as i just have dreamt of. So 1 - 3 years, then you can play allot of songs ;D

  • 1-3 years is a big difference. dont you think?

by the way i play 1 month only :) but i will rock 1 day :D thx anyway

  • yes, it is accualy a HUGE defference, but it depends on how much you play ;)

  • well i think its all about how much you practice and what your practice, what i did was that i had a good inventory of songs i wanted to play.I learned the easy parts to the songs which got me a little better everyday( i played like 2 hours a night) and after one year before you know it well u know most of the song except the solo which take alot of patience.I also recommend people too check out videos like one you don't look too stupid when you play with experienced players :P

  • Thomas Erak has played for eight years and i believe he "Rocks"

  • David you are The Man

    banjofred

  • You are the Master!! Thanks a ton David Taub. This sounds awesome. As soon as I started messing with the sustains, I found a jewel. Go from a Csus4 to a C, what does it sound like? Throw a fast strum pattern in and...

When I was a young boy, I played a silver ball!

    Get it?

  • Dr. House?, are you?

  • somebody may have already mentioned this, but another guy who adds the bass E string to chords like that, specifically power chords is mike einzinger of incubus. if you listen to almost any song in the album make yourself, particularly pardon me, you'll hear it.

  • i love david taub!

  • David i have a problem with my neck it smells bad even changing the strings and cleaning it with products but after a while the smell comes around, can you advice me, ill thank you so much really!

  • Excellent! Great teacher.

  • I go into my talks about dream theater like that all the time hahaha

  • thanks i totally get sus chords now

  • Quality energy and quality guy

  • nice use of the word delineate!

  • that is a really nice sounding guitar/amp/both

  • great lesson as always

  • wonder if he sleeps with his hat on.

  • Hahaha, good point.

  • Great lesson! Aha! So *that* is what makes the clashy-clangy bit in Jethro Tull's "Back to the Family" sound the way it does.

  • whoa awesome!!!

    Dm

  • gorgeous strat! wow ,ima les paul guy but thats pretty nice

  • very helpful, thanks.

  • nice strat

  • hey dave, awesome lesson man. such a simple chord to play, and sounds awesome with gain.

  • Haha, "blackbelt in music theory" thats great. I love Dream Theater too.

  • all this is goin over my head :(

  • Learn some theory it's really helpful

  • damn .,

    i need to learn guitar

  • I really love this guy's lessons.

  • at 4:00 he says "it's a moveable barre chords"

    arent all chords moveable?

  • no open chord areent

  • Not with the same fingering.

  • I write song now

  • Dm, "which i feel is the sadest of all chords..."

  • dontbthatguy8, are you really Nigel?

  • awesome lesson! thanks

  • david, i can play bar chords on a electric guitar now and will try these out. thanks! i need to build up strength for my acoustic/electric.

  • John petrucci under a glass moon solo is the best solo ever developed!

  • What makes the inverted Csus2 not a Gsus4?

  • I don't think anything except the lack of playing the lowest G causing it to be named based on the C.

  • because the bass note he adds is just an octave of the 5th of the root note c. Which is a G but iys just the same as the fifth, so its kinda like adding another power chord.

  • Another great video from NextLv!

  • Oh yeah John Petrucci rocks!!!^_^

  • Best lesson so far!

  • no other effects? I hear everb

  • you heard reverb because the amp has a natural reverb to it. its the amp, not a pedal.

  • Its a fender tube amp, its obviously got spring reverb

  • Friend of mine's got the same amp, it has spring reverb indeed. Very awesome amp

  • Thanks man another great lesson !!!!!!!!!

  • i would love to jam with him, hes awesome

  • EROTOMANIA!!!!!!

  • Diliniate is a big word...and i am from a small town whut dus it mean???

  • v. describe or indicate something precisely

  • Dave, are all your guitar purchases tax deductible? :)

  • cool !

  • he's playing open chords, I have a strat and it sound very good distorted. He was playing directly into and out of an amp with gain, but you can get a nice sound from a strat using a pedal for distortion.

  • Dream Theater is my favorite band! I was hoping for some more diminished or 9 chord videos in the future. I'll check the site. Thanks Dave!

  • I played this, it rocks and it's easy ^^

  • Thanks, you guys are really helpful. Nice Strat.

  • nice
