This was SOOO good. My friend had a tape of ALL these openings, but it was lost/destroyed. Anyone who has more - PLEASE post. Nowadays, it seems openings have to be about pimping some hip hop artist or rock video, or worse yet, a network show. Why can't we get back to classic sports music with classic sports moments?
Not only did you see highlights of those classic games, but you heard the voices of Curt Gowdy, Jim Simpson, etc. That's another reason I liked those openings.
I remember they used a clip of a Chargers-Broncos game from 1985, where Denver won in overtime when they blocked a field goal attempt and ran it all the way for a touchdown. The announcer described it this way, "Again it is blocked..again it is blocked..hold everything...what a turnaround!! What a turnaround!!"
@TheRetro64 That announcer was Phil Stone. I have that opening. It was part of several weeks of highlights I strung together from NFL '86 openings. I will be uploading it in the days to come. I've just had so many requests I've been trying to get to, that it's taken a back seat. But I will get it on the channel at some point. I love those highlights!
That Viking game was possibly my favorite Vikings game of all time!!! Loved hearing Charlie Jones say "You're Kidding". I liked this opening with the great moments. Networks should do openings like this again!!!
Epic opening NBC always had, gives me chills. Remember when they routinely played the Jets beating Miami in OT 51-45 in 1986 on a long bomb from Ken O'Brien to Wesley Walker, one of the best regular season game ever, loved the NFL on NBC.
@Sportbuff99TV Nice, that would be great. I'm a die hard Jets fan so obviously that game was special to me, I was 9 or 10 years old when that game was on. There was an equally dramatic O'Brien to Walker pass as time expired that allowed the Jets to the game at 45, then the OT bomb that ended it, classic game.
Sportbuff...these are epic. Thanks so much for this trip down memory lane. I started watching football as a six year old in 1985...and I remember the Jets/Raiders game to start the year in the Coliseum. 31-0 before NBC cut to another game :)

I'd love to hear this theme straight through, where it doesn't loop back once it gets to the end. This was a great, great opening.

@B2B76 If everything goes well, I'll have that O'Brien to Walker bomb in a highlight package in the near future.

Oh... my... GOD! I remembe this open! It broke my heart when NBC lost the NFL, because it meant no more of these openings!

Nice shot of NBC's NFL studio then, as well as the NBC cameras.
