I never said he was talented, just an artist...because he creates art. But if you think this type of painting is so simple, I challenge you to try it yourself. Please show pictures when you are finished. Thanks for your commets. I always appreciate other points of view.
I just read that as parents you guys do not consider him a 'child prodigy'... just a two year who loves to paint. That makes me feel so much better. I get concerned for children his age in light of the whole Marla episode, who, to me it seems, is just a normal kid being sadly puppeteered by her father for his own motives.
Yes, that's right. We have never referred to our son as a prodigy. And I agree with you about Marla Olmstead. I don't believe she was the sole creator of her work. It's very obvious.
One more thing... It would not be unusually for any child given lots of paint, brushes, paper etc. - and allowed the freedom to 'make a mess' - to arrive at something which to the average person appears to 'look like' abstract expressionism. The point is, a child that age could not be aware (or wholly conscious) of the formally decisions they are making in the process and why.
Many artist in the world "experiment" with art and create paintings that are completely experimental. (no plan involved) That is what children also do sometimes too.
What's the deal with the recent fascination with child prodigies? I find it sad. Clement Greenberg said something along the lines that there are no child prodigies in the visual arts, in literature and music, yes, but not the visual arts.
I understand it is awesome to see what comes out of a child and that the art stands on its own as a composition. The difference is the cognition involved in its creation, without this, it is ordinary. Everyone can do this (don't say you can't if someone had a gun held to your head and said recreate this painting you could get damn close, if you couldn't you would have proven Darwin wrong)at this age with encouragement.
Thanks for the comment! Try to come out to his show on Saturday. Buy a raffle ticket and you might win one for a buck. Go to his website for more info. Oh, and look for Cameron and I on "Good Day Sacramento" this Thursday at 9AM on CW31/KOVR 13. Catch you later bro!

Not to be an asshole, but a kid smearing paint around isn't talent, even if it does happen to look really cool. And it does look really cool.

Who said my son was a child prodigy? I didn't. He simply does something that most 2-year-olds don't. Thanks for watching:)

Finally, with that said, the kid is off to a good start in all honesty. He is a painter, not an artist... yet.
