  • O'Donnell is demonstrably lying: "you are not allowed to be a Christian over there" and China "will not allow you the freedom to read the Bible". No one who has truly been engaged with contemporary Christianity in twenty-first-century China would make such claims. There are indeed Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Christians in China. There are churches, theological seminaries--even convents--in China. The PRC officially recognizes (and, granted, regulates) the Protestant TSPM and CCC.

  • Without question, the PRC has indeed tortured and martyred people, and Chinese Christians (like Chinese Muslims and Buddhists) do not enjoy complete religious freedom--especially those who are members of the so-called "house churches" and non-CCPA Roman Catholics. But O'Donnell's statements are patently false.

What is forbidden, however, is foreign proselytization in China. So O'Donnell has been "working with" groups and "sending" people to China whose sole purpose is to violate Chinese law.
