  • buster keaton tops them all!

  • How interesting that Groucho refers to Chaplin as the greatest comedian. Most people today would say that Groucho himself was the greatest comedian of the modern era. But even though I love Groucho I have no problem calling it a tie between the both of them. Their like will never be seen again.

  • Both Groucho and Harpo stated that Chico got laid more than any of the Marx Brothers.

  • @DavidLovins67 He was a real ladies man. He wasn't particularly attractive, but that just goes to show looks aren't all that important when you have that special animal magnetism and air of confidence. He was probably floating in natural pheromones.

  • that actually seemed sincere and not blowing sunshine up someone's bum.

  • I think that they are both incomparable one is the greatest talker in movie history and the other is the greatest physical comedian in movie history!

  • Hell, I wish that I could talk like Groucho.

  • Comment removed

  • Charlie Chaplin

    W.C. Fields

    Groucho Marx

    In that order.

  • I make skits that are chock-full of puns and one-liners, please take a look and let me know what you think! I'm a huge fan of The Marx Brothers and want to reach out to an audience who likes that sense of humor

  • Chaplin had directed, produced, written, acted and composed the music of his movies. Groucho did all of that to.

They were not only talented comedians. They were truly artists.

  • I find that a lot of people deeply envy those who can run with their mouths.

This video's image also confuses me-- most sources say that Groucho was 5'7" and that Chaplin was 5'5". So, why the hell do they stand the same height there?

  • @LouisLambert Are you talking about at 0:04, to Chaplin's left? I'm not sure that's Groucho. I don't know how tall he was, but if anything that looks like Harpo.

  • @ArtD42 Yes, I was, and Harpo IS the same height as Chaplin.

I must have been losing my mind.

    I like 1080p. :-(

  • @ArtD42 it is groucho. he looks very different without all the moustaches and cigars and the like, but first of all harpo was even smaller than groucho (they were all rather short).. okay that was it, i just recognize him as groucho XD

  • Groucho should have said ' No Chaplin....it's I who envy you.....screwing all those young girls ...... u dirty bastard!' lol!

  • This is one of three surviving"Hy Garnder Tv Talk Show"interviews..the other two interviews that Mr.Gardner did that exsists are:Montgomery Cliff and Elvis Presley.

  • respect

  • Boy, Chaplin & Groucho Marx are little guys, standing next to those two real tennis players. I don't know much about tennis, but I'm sure the other two guys were famous. I also notice Chaplin was a lefty.

  • I think Buster Keaton , and Harold Lloyd were Chaplin's equals.

  • The Marx Brothers=Basics of crazy humour. Without them there wouldn't have been any Monthy Python.

  • Hi

I'm trying to locate the original archival source for this video-clip in order to obtain permission to use as an illustration in a multi-media e-book I am designing. Could you please tell me where you found it and/or who I should contact in order to obtain permission to use it for a commercial purpose?

    Thanks in advance

    charliechaplinfan

  • Isn't Charlie givin' his hand to harpo in this vid?

  • @trilceOOO no, hes shaking groucho's hand i think.

  • My vote is for Al Jolson, and I am a new born as of this morning!

  • @mrbarthoss I think the Three Stooges were the greatest and it would be more obvious if they'd worked for anyone but Columbia, and I was just conceived three minutes ago!

  • My favourite is Jack Benny too and I'm only 12!

  • Maybe Chaplin was just being kind to Groucho. Think of all the greats: Buster Keaton, Chaplin, Stan Laurel, W. C. Fields, Lou Costello, Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Jackie Gleason, Harpo and even Groucho. Most of what we remember is what we saw them do with their faces and bodies.

  • Groucho, you've got it all wrong.

    You are god.

  • Marx brothers and Chaplin were incredibles. I'm 17 years old and I'm crazy about old comics. It was the time when actors were realy talented. But please, don't forget the genius actor-director Buster Keaton who was for me one of the best.

(sorry for my bad English, I'm french =D)

  • @doucksmecano oh buster keaton is often forgotten so are the three stooges and lucille ball and, laurel and hardy

  • @caloscalante1518 Yes you're right.

  • @doucksmecano actually that was pretty good English. I'm 16 and feel the same way except my favorite is Jack Benny.

  • Wow! This is a pearl.

  • Wow! Even the great Groucho looks up to Charlie. CHAPLIN is the KING OF COMEDY

  • Groucho does have a unique way of talking. He speaks so quickly that it takes a while before you realize he said something smart.

Rufus T. Firely is my favorite Groucho character.

For Chaplin, I love "the Little Fellow" from "The Gold Rush" and "Adenoid Hynkel" from "The Great Dictator."

  • @dnt9217 same here exactly :D

  • Hy...Gardner....

  • It must have been weird being Chaplin, greatest comedian on earth, knowing sound would ruin your act. 15 years of continuous success and then... bam! Brick wall as the medium totally changes. Chaplin and Marx, both comedic legends.

  • It didn't really "ruin" his career. In retrospective, The Great Dictator is among his greatest works.

  • Chaplin was excellent in "The Great Dictator!"

  • @JapeUK that's true. like the UltimateSerge said, it didn't quite ruin his career, people consider Monsieur Verdoux to be a failure, but i loved that movie. I just hate when people say he abandoned the tramp character after Modern Times. READ HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY PEOPLE!! haha

  • There will never be such influential comedians as charlie and the marx bros.

fyi Stooge marathon news years eve and day

  • I love Charlie and Groucho. =)

    thanks for posting.

  • Chaplin didn't need to speak which is what made him remarkable and is to this day, brilliant in the work he created. these people had real talent, they created that movie magic that seems lost today.

  • @foxpawz He did too! He said, "And now, the dance of the oceana rolls" in The Goldrush. (well, all of 5 seconds of Chaplin speaking..)

  • Wow...Groucho as I didn't think he would exist... nice!

  • Strange to see him give an interview without his toupe.

Groucho really was the one, the only...

  • defenetly two of the greats. todays "comedians" only know how to say curse words and talk about sex

  • what else is there to talk about?

  • Oh shut up maskedwalnut

  • I'd like to hear the rest of the interview sometime.....Do you think you might post it later?

  • Very interesting clip. Groucho rarely complemented other comedians.

  • ...You had the 'schtick' Groucho!

  • I'm eighteen years old and I've been brought up with all kinds of comedians/actors...and in my opinion Chaplin and Groucho are by far the most entertaining, talented people i've ever seen. Theres no-one around today that can match their talent i feel. Its a real shame.

  • amen.

  • Don't overlook the genius of Harpo and Chico either. Not only were they comedic geniuses, but musical geniuses as well. They don't make 'em like that anymore :)

  • @chrisjackson1 Hey, man, where's Zeppo? Why people always forget Zeppo?

  • agrees

  • I'm the same age as you, and I am from Argentina.. a place where that kind of humour is not that popular.. and I agree 100% with you

  • @JustAdam182 Amen to that. No one can do what they did; Chaplin with his mime and groucho with his attitude and "spunk". Chaplin and Groucho are probably ashamed at what has become of the acting world today.

  • @JustAdam182

    Bizarre.

I am also eighteen and have a similar opinion.

The greatest comedians are as follows: Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx and Woody Allen. I call them three the Godfathers of comedy (Laurel & Hardy might be somewhere nearby). Larry David, Christopher Guest, Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant are my favourite comedians in this day and age.

  • @JustAdam182 yes! you are right, and maybe Buster Keaton too, don't you think so?

  • @JustAdam182 Ditto....You could be on to something!

  • You're like me.

  • @JustAdam182 I know you made the comment about Groucho and Chaplin a year ago. If you've not seen Buster Keaton, may I recommend him to you. My favorite is "College." I got to see that in a big theater with a professional organist from the 1920s. It was an amazing, fun night. Keaton was one of the best physical comedians ever. However, Groucho and Charlie are in a league apart.

  • @JustAdam182 we younger Chaplin Fans are the rare ones. we put our status as a person of the flow behind us. Place our Interests above us in a caliber that no fool can abuse or mock. to preserve the works of the old film fathers.

because even the most stubborn people know where they are would not have been possible without the entertainers of the past.

  • @JustAdam182 Are you partial to Jack Benny and Groucho as well? I'm 18 now and love them all! You've kept liking them I hope.

  • @OldTelivisionRocks I'm 21 now, and yes. I still feel the same. these two are legends!

I'm happy to see other young people love these two. It gives us all hope that these will still be popular for many more years to come.

  • @JustAdam182 There are still great comedians, but your right, these two guys are untouchable, I grew up with these films in the house that my dad had, so glad that was the case and I didnt miss out.

  • i have heard stories about Chaplin, who remains in my opintion the greatest of the greats, the most universal and famous iconic figure of cinema and linked with "laughter" but that even with all of that, he still feared a public resenting or not liking him, was still insecure about "will they like it?" in regards to his work. it blows my mind. Charlie Chaplin. makes him all the more human.

  • It would've been funny if he said that about Harpo

  • Loved Both these guys... Chaplin & Groucho ... imperious.

  • Is it true Groucho Marx is enjoying retirement in Acapulco, Mexico?

  • nope. dead. dead for many years.

  • He will never die. He lives on in all of us.

  • If any comedians can be said to be truly immortal, Charlie Chaplin and Groucho Marx definitely belong in that group.

  • Please, keep my hands to yourself.

  • @megamarsvin

I would have to put in their, his brother Harpo as well as the many greats of comedy

  • I cant quite hear what he is sayin'

why did Chaplin say tha t he was envious?

  • "i wish i could talk on the screen the way you do"

  • thanks a bunch!

    :)

  • I think either Groucho or Chaplin were pulling someone's leg. Groucho LOVED to tell stories that were... well... entertaining.

  • I liked Buster Keaton...but I think he was more pure slapstick, where Chaplin was very clever and wry, and you had to think a little about some of his gags. I think he was also very graceful and moved like a dancer. To me he was the best, possibly of all time. all due respect to Buster and Harold and all the great old timey comedians.

  • Groucho wrote to a friend in 1940,about having dinner with Chaplin at Chasen's, in Beverly Hills. He said that Chaplin had just finished his as-yet unreleased "Great Dictator" and was nervous about how the public would react. Groucho said that Charlie told him he envied his (Groucho's) delivery on the screen, and the way he could handle a joke. But the really interesting thing about Groucho's letter was his final comment that the bill for 4-people came to around $40.00 -- try getting that now!

  • Farebbero comodo dei sottotitoli in italiano...

  • Groucho was the most funny man I think. But naturally it is hard to compare. The silent films also were art, not only comedy.

But Groucho, Chaplin and also Buster Keaton stand out as the three geniouses.

Buster Keaton is however extremely underrated. And Keaton is to me greater than Chaplin.

  • Wow! We have had laughs with Laurel and Hardy

    Marx Bros.-Three Stooges-A & C-Martin and Lewis

    Woody Allen-Richard Pryor-Ernie Kovacs-Spike Milligan-Mel Brooks movies-Cheech and Chong

and Monty Python...But their was only one Charlie Chaplin!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • chaplin and groucho: two masterminds. what a team they would make!

  • I wonder if the full interview could be found some where. It would be wonderful to see it.

  • Charlie Chaplin continues to be a beautiful man even into his white-haired middle years.

  • ....?

charlie chaplin died in the 70s.

if he was still alive, he's be over a hundred years old.

  • I wasn't referring to specific years, BTW.

  • god id love to see the entire show

  • That's an amazing story.

  • Chaplin is the best!!!!!!!

  • God, I love those two. I love Charlie and Groucho.

  • Groucho is the best :)
