I've listened to and loved the entire Pavement catalog but I love this band much more. It's more mellow and I think his guitar playing has really become something that deserves more attention.
I've recently dug into the Malkmus' solo stuff. I've taken to it better than Pavement. So good. Out of Reaches at the first few listens was and stands as a shining track. Love it.
agreed but it is hard to tell which is better; whenever a Pavement record came out I loved it beyond belief - nothing could be better; same thing with these Jicks but Pavement was then and this is now so i don't care so much about then as now...
Real Emotional Trash is one of the finest records I have heard in years. This song is my favorite. Sadly I missed their Dallas gig- I HOPE they come back again! And for any fuck ups who say "girls can't play rock"- Janet & Joanna put you sorry losers to shame! Stephen Malkmus is a brilliant songwriter- "I know the tide will turn"... amen!
i love the guitar solo on the record where the 2 guitars soar and swirl in sonic bliss; and the line "I know the tide will turn" just packs a punch - very powerful stuff, great song; Real Emotional Trash is a great record
sonicmilk says this band is insipid? Hardly. I saw the Jicks in Newport, KY on Easter evening at Southgate house, they were terrific! I haven't seen SM in several years and had forgotten what a force he truly is. This show was better than any Pavement show I had seen in the 90's. Janet and Joanna make it look so easy, what a rhythm section, Mike too. Only mistakes were the usual ones SM makes(he's brilliant all the same!). Do your soul a favor and go catch this band, this is wonderful stuff.

I thought he quit Pavement to be in a better band...Can some one explain to me how come this band lacks the charisma, energy, and dynamics of Pavement? Every video I've watched of the jicks is insipid. God I miss the original indie kings.
Yeah, this is definitely a lack luster jicks performance by their own standards, but if you notice above I said "every video I've watched of the jicks is insipid". Send me a link to a good jicks video, something that is better than the peak of the pavement days. I bet you can't do it, because it is impossible.
So you have an opion -- so what? Some of us actually prefer his solo material to his Pavement output. And guess what? We're both entitled to like what we like? What sense is there bitching anonymously about other people's taste on Youtube? What point are you trying to make other than blathering on and on (to who I don't know) that you don't think it measures up. So what? Who are you? What does it matter?
It is funny to talk about the "charisma, energy, and dynamics of Pavement." Because what that boils down to is Malkmus' brilliance. In other words, Pavement was not charismatic, energetic or dynamic. They were just brilliant. And now the Jicks are brilliant. And you can listen to any of the live songs I have posted on YouTube (no video, just soundtrack).
The new Jicks record may be his best full length release to date.
I can't say enough good re: Real emotional trash...it is AWESOME in it's entirety. This video is great as well....this just happens to be my favorite cut on the album...thanks for posting it!!!!!!!!!!!!
I miss Pavement :(
But I love the Jicks :)
So it's all good

Loving that Fender Jaguar guitar, makes me wanna sell my shell-pink 60's stratocaster and try the single-humbucker combo.

Did ya end up sellin' that pink strat and getting the jag?
GlassPick604 2 years ago
Not yet. I bought Pro Tools 8 so I am busy with that. I went and played a Jazzmaster @ Guitar City, and liked the feel of it.

Some pretty serious access to Malkmus....must be nice!
