I grew up listening to this classic track. Hard to believe Francis Rossi was only 19 at the time this song became a hit both in the UK and here in the US. Still an awesome tune!
Why is he laughing at 2:12??? I take it they were singing live but pre-recorded music, like karaoke? And yes, this is a very good song. Even better that it's a tribute to one of Britain;s great artists, LS Lowry. :)
The lead singer is definitely miked. As coolenam already said you can see and hear a slight laugh that's not in the original. By the way, this must be the stereo version since I don't hear the wah-wah that's on the mono version. The organ is a Vox Continental not a Jaguar. The Jaguar had the low octave keys in the standard color scheme but the Continental used the reverse colors for all the keys. And the rear braces on the Continental come together at a single point like an upside down V.
Notice the guitars? They are not plugged in. They were miming, as was the case with all bands in Top of the Pops right up until the late 80's early 90's. Also there are no amps.

Shortly after their their psychedelic debut, they changed their sound pretty drastically, and it was GREAT! They were an excellent band no matter what the format was. The 1st album was textbook 60's, and what followed was ass-kickin' hard rock. Anyone that likes to rattle the windows a bit (like me) needs to have "Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon" in their collection. If you like to rock, this is definitely a "desert island" album!

WATCHING THIS PERFORMANCE. WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT THAT 5 LATER THAT THEY CAME UP WITH A TOTALLY DIFFERENT IMAGE. CERTIANLY TOOK A WHILE TO GET USED TO!
What possessed this lot to veer from innovative genius as demonstrated here to the twelve bar blandness they became renowned for is one of THE mysteries of pop music.
@Hyena47A, My friend, it has baffled me for ages, why would you devolve from this genius to "what ever you want"? I suppose they must have stopped taking those creative drugs.
@Hyena47A Do you know the rest of the Status Quo Music from this period? If not you could try "Paradise Flats", Technicolor Dreams", "Sunny Cellophane Skies", "Black Veils Of Melancholy" or "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe".
@Hyena47A lack of commercial success with THIS sound forced the change. compared to the staggering success of the "bland" sound...status quo hold the record for most hit chart singles of any band ever. 63+ thats more than the Beatles, Elvis and the Stones. THATS why they changed sound. GIVE THEM SOME RECOGNITION.
@Hyena47A Mate, I see it like this: at 00:55 they realized they could simply leave this pop bs (especially the annoying high-pitched riff) to all the rest of the other groups, and simply just rock and roll... and become the legendary Quo.

Bet a lot of guitarists were kicking themselves ~ why didn't I think of that intro! (Bet they were also kicking themselves about the RS's 'Satisfaction' riff too). Apparently they rarely, if ever played this or the other singles live~ preferring to play their R&B stuff in denims.
Almost every band on Top of the Pops was given a mike but it wasn't always switched on, so they could sing along but not mess with the broadcast. If you want to know whether a band was miming check out the drummers, a lot of the time the sticks don't ouch the kit, or very gently at most. In this case I think the mike was on as there's almost a laugh from Rossi in the middle while he's singing.
Definately Not 'WAH WAH', That Effect Is Used At The Begining Of Jimi Hendrix's 'Voodoo Chile'. This Starts At 1.17 - Maybe 'Flanger' or 'Phase-Shifter' Then?

Ah, the 60s. Psychedelic music, acid rock and just plain turn on, tune in and drop out. This song was very popular with my high school graduation class in 1968.
Bands sure knew how to dress back then. Bring back the new romantic Carnaby Street cheescloth Indian prints and Georgian style please. Today's bands all look like they're dressed for raking leaves!
Matchstick Men always brings to mind spring of '68 , leaving high school and fried fruit pies they sold at the Folly Beach Pier, Charleston S.C. Sorry about your wardrobe...irreplaceable..we need the Fool to get back in business like they did for The Beatles....sew some more class threads!!
You're obviously not familiar with The Love Me Nots, the Maggots, The Grip Weeds, The Chesterfiled Kings or the Urges. They all dress to thrill...check em out!
@trzcinarowice hmm. if you look closely all they have to do is turn the hair around 45 degress for one of theose string 'emo' cuts. In other words what hangsover the Quo's ears today would gover Dashboard's forehead. what goes around you might say.
todays bands dress like thay sound, absolute shit all these whingy emo indy bullshit bands, people like kasabian are meant to be representing our generation, fuck me thats bad, , england has allways led the world in music, cream, the rolling stones, beatles, the who, , , pink floyd, black sabbath, lets face it the list goes on , but we got nothing now, on either sides of the atlantic, all those blues artists in america, like john lee hooker jimmy hendrix, its a very sad state of affairs,
@devilboy66684 .......Amen...Noel Gallagher at least wore some nice threads from time to time....I would say it was Brian Jones who really lit the flame of style that continues here and there. The Prince 'Revolution' era was about the most recent.
@devilboy66684 yes you got that right, it sure is bullshit today, all image and no subsatnce at all, even the image shits me, over over commercialisation to DEATH,,,bring back real music please,is there anybody out their who can stir up the imagination and heart again...../??? makes me sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P to a time not so long ago!!!!!!!!!!
@12347771 To be fair, the Status Quo started dressing in denim and t shirts starting around 1970 when they went from psychedelic to a more blues-boogie band.,
ozzy's version of this song isnt as good as status quo's in my honest opinion. sounds like a cheap rip off really. but then again if you are an ozzy fan you will like most of what he sings so i suppose we have different opinions
Those adverts for ITunes are REALLY ANNOYING. I can't even afford a bleeding IPod, never mind the tunes to go on it. Buying this laptop nearly bankrupted me! And I'm on benefits!
I never knew Quo played this until I saw it here - amazing. Wouldn't have thought it was the same band as now.

Large 5lb tins are popular at Christmas.

So you are now well versed in British candy.. Not bad from a youtube coment on Status Quo !

You're obviously not familiar with The Love Me Nots, the Maggots, The Grip Weeds, The Chesterfiled Kings or the Urges. They all dress to thrill...check em out!

@Waldenpunk
Grip Weeds ? wasn't 'Gripweed' Lennon's character in 'How I Won The War'?
Thanks for the referrals!

trzcinarowice 1 year ago

12347771 1 year ago

@12347771 To be fair, the Status Quo started dressing in denim and t shirts starting around 1970 when they went from psychedelic to a more blues-boogie band.,

wow. it's amazing what could be done with just 60's technology. why does modern music suck so badly?
maybe because everything is Auto-Tuned. There is no personality. So the singer's voice wavers a bit. It's supposed to. He's human.
Auto-Tuned singers are not humans. They are computer voices attached to human faces.

ozzy's version of this song isnt as good as status quo's in my honest opinion. sounds like a cheap rip off really. but then again if you are an ozzy fan you will like most of what he sings so i suppose we have different opinions

Those adverts for ITunes are REALLY ANNOYING. I can't even afford a bleeding IPod, never mind the tunes to go on it. Buying this laptop nearly bankrupted me! And I'm on benefits!
