  • I never knew Quo played this until I saw it here - amazing. Wouldn't have thought it was the same band as now.

  • This clip makes me want to pay someone to assasinate Justin Beiber and all his other little wanker mates.

  • Can you say...LSD.

  • I grew up listening to this classic track. Hard to believe Francis Rossi was only 19 at the time this song became a hit both in the UK and here in the US. Still an awesome tune!

  • gran video pero es el udio original del disco es como dicen play back!!

  • Now then now then 'ows about that then..

  • hard to pull off that phase shifted sound live but the vocals are live

  • Comment removed

  • Definitely not a live performance. Singing live, rest not.

  • soundgarden kinda ripped off this song.

  • R.I.P sir jimmy saville

  • Interesting....Almost The Who like...

  • the keyboarder wants your children...

  • @RedEyedSniperGuy

....and the drummer wants to be Keith Moon (at least at 1:42)

  • great song my favourite of quo/

  • Unbelievable testemonial of a unjustifiably forgotten era. Status Quo had born in such a wonderful psych style.

  • The lead singer is definitely miked. As coolenam already said you can see and hear a slight laugh that's not in the original. By the way, this must be the stereo version since I don't hear the wah-wah that's on the mono version. The organ is a Vox Continental not a Jaguar. The Jaguar had the low octave keys in the standard color scheme but the Continental used the reverse colors for all the keys. And the rear braces on the Continental come together at a single point like an upside down V.

  • awesome!!!

  • Notice the guitars? They are not plugged in. They were miming, as was the case with all bands in Top of the Pops right up until the late 80's early 90's. Also there are no amps.

  • Notice the guitars? They are not plugged in. They were miming, as was the case with all bands in Top of the Pops right up until the late 80's early 90's.

  • Ahh that "whooshing" sound, too cool

  • Shortly after their their psychedelic debut, they changed their sound pretty drastically, and it was GREAT! They were an excellent band no matter what the format was. The 1st album was textbook 60's, and what followed was ass-kickin' hard rock. Anyone that likes to rattle the windows a bit (like me) needs to have "Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon" in their collection. If you like to rock, this is definitely a "desert island" album!

  • jaja, yeah. 12yrs old when this song came out and when I saw the Target commercial. went crazy looking for it..glad I did.,one of my favorites...love that era..

  • i was 12 yrs old in 1968,this song was long forgotten by now till i saw the target ad and it came back to me,took a few minutes to find it so glad i did.wish i was back there again.love it.....

  • @opustrek1 ditto!! I was 15; that Target ad was driving me crazy for days!!! guess it was effective advertising for boomers that can still remember through the haze!!

  • Sexy!

  • Indeed...where would MODERN music be if not for the hardworking all important Hammond B3 Organ that came before!.

  • Hahah...they seem to be haveing so much fun!

  • GREAT! I knew it was a song from the sixties when I heard it on the target commercial. Way to go target! best commercial going right now.

  • LSD at its finest

  • yeah baby!

  • Kids smash your cell phones and buy a guitar, a combo organ, and 5 piece drum kit. And a bass- the most important instrument for emotional control!

  • Back in the day you could take the best trip for no cost whatsoever!!

  • was only 12. to think when I heard the song on a Target commercial, yes a Target commercial, I went to Youtube asap to search, so glad. love this song. brings back great memories and its refreshing to remember this era!!!!!!!!!!!!!!shit now is so distorted

  • Blast From Da Past.... Remember taking one of those old match packs (Flint On The Front Side) with those 3 guys (Manny-Moe-And Somebody) and pulling three matches through the cover to look like their Swantzs were hanging out....Matchstick Men..It made the girls giggle...You might even "Get Some"...With 'Orange Sunshine' everywhere, anything wuz possible back then

  • Man, this singer looks a lot like Steve Marriott, except for the mustache.

  • Hyena Money Talks --

  • AM I RIGHT IN THINKING THAT DURING THEIR "PSYCHADELIC" PHASE THAT FRANCIS ROSSI WAS KNOWN AS MIKE ROSSI THAT THEIR FOLLOW-UP SINGLE "ICE IN THE SUN" WAS CO-WRITTEN BY 60'S ROCKER MARTY WILDE. WATCHING THIS PERFORMANCE. WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT THAT 5 LATER THAT THEY CAME UP WITH A TOTALLY DIFFERENT IMAGE. CERTIANLY TOOK A WHILE TO GET USED TO!

  • They're wearing wigs.

  • love the laugh at 2:13 is he laughing at the drummer?!

  • @danimusic077 all three of those effects are being used

  • The dude on piano at 0:47 is mad creepy.

  • The bass is so awesome in this song!

  • What makes you think Francis is high as a kite?

  • The lead singer is higher than a kite.

  • What possessed this lot to veer from innovative genius as demonstrated here to the twelve bar blandness they became renowned for is one of THE mysteries of pop music.

  • @Hyena47A, My friend, it has baffled me for ages, why would you devolve from this genius to "what ever you want"? I suppose they must have stopped taking those creative drugs.

  • @Hyena47A Have to agree. They were interesting at first then they became the biggest bores on the planet. Amazingly they became huge doing it.

  • @Hyena47A kinda like steve miller brilliant to bland

  • @Hyena47A Do you know the rest of the Status Quo Music from this period? If not you could try "Paradise Flats", Technicolor Dreams", "Sunny Cellophane Skies", "Black Veils Of Melancholy" or "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe".

  • @Hyena47A lack of commercial success with THIS sound forced the change. compared to the staggering success of the "bland" sound...status quo hold the record for most hit chart singles of any band ever. 63+ thats more than the Beatles, Elvis and the Stones. THATS why they changed sound. GIVE THEM SOME RECOGNITION.

  • @Hyena47A Mate, I see it like this: at 00:55 they realized they could simply leave this pop bs (especially the annoying high-pitched riff) to all the rest of the other groups, and simply just rock and roll... and become the legendary Quo.

  • Nice bump-it! Haha! Awesome song though!

  • well as all tv shows that were live back then were canned, and the songs pre' recorded,no wonder the dummer only had half a heart into his drumming

  • This was the song that made me want to learn the bass and join a band back in 1968. Thanks for the post!

  • Bet a lot of guitarists were kicking themselves ~ why didn't I think of that intro! (Bet they were also kicking themselves about the RS's 'Satisfaction' riff too). Apparently they rarely, if ever played this or the other singles live~ preferring to play their R&B stuff in denims.

  • is it just me, or is the singer laughing at 2:10 because the dude on the synthecisor is looking in the camera?

  • best quo song

  • wat heeft hij gebruikt joh 1:37

  • They are lip syncing, I don't know why every band does it at Top of the Pops all the time.

  • @dirtygoghi nope, this video is definately a live performance - he is definately singing live at least.

  • Almost every band on Top of the Pops was given a mike but it wasn't always switched on, so they could sing along but not mess with the broadcast. If you want to know whether a band was miming check out the drummers, a lot of the time the sticks don't ouch the kit, or very gently at most. In this case I think the mike was on as there's almost a laugh from Rossi in the middle while he's singing.

  • Definately Not 'WAH WAH', That Effect Is Used At The Begining Of Jimi Hendrix's 'Voodoo Chile'. This Starts At 1.17 - Maybe 'Flanger' or 'Phase-Shifter' Then?

  • @cygnusxl5 I first thougt it was a Wah-Wah but it could be also a Phase-Shifter .. not really a flanger

  • @cygnusxl5 I think the effect is from what was called a flanger..... !!?

  • Good psychedelic music, but why does the band wear those ridiculous wigs?

  • @MannyMUC dude they're not wigs! it was the 60s

  • Does Anyone Know How They Created That 'Jet Aircraft' Type Effect? Was It Using A Phase-Shifter On The Guitars Or Keyboard?

The Effect Has Also Been Used By Black Sabbath, Lenny Kravitz, And Many Others Since!

  • @cygnusxl5 Isn't that what they call a "wah wah"? The Screaming Trees and other bands have used that sound as well. It works for a lot of songs.

  • I remember this song from high school. Just starting to get high. Wasn't into the acid yet. Excellent bass.

  • Gayest... drummer.... EVER!!!

    Enough said.

  • @naprossen Gayest...comment....EVER!!!

  • @akcoins Well, you're right. That drummer is gayer than my comment, though.

I used to like this song, but now that I watched this video I can't stop giggling when I hear it.

@winterstellar Not the *only* good song from Status Quo: "Whatever you want" is decent, too.

  • a MASTERPIECE!!! But alas, it was the only good song that band ever made...I like to smoke myself stoned out of of my brains and then dig this tune for a loong time. .: )

  • still my fave quo song

  • I like this version much better. Doesn't have all that wah wah pedal!

  • You in the sky, you with this guy, you make men cry, you lie!

  • Quo in this era were not commercial. Later they became so---and lost that edge --don't blame them --take the money! The commercial stuff pai --sure --Caroline and more but not the same.

  • Wonderful song, however it was great that the Qou transformed form a Mod band into the rockers that so many of us banged our heads to!

Status Quo playing their song on the video

From a time that was oh so many years ago

A time when I was a young man in my prime

Never heeding the relentless passage of time

Never thought that I may have got it all wrong

Nevedr thought I would be around for this long

And as time passes by, I am wondering why

I'm too tired to live and i'm too scared to die...

  • Franciss Rossi looks so cute when he looks into the camera! Don't look at me that way Franciss, you get me going!

  • Cripes, now I'll be having flashbacks all night! Must...keep...eyes...open....

  • Best of --before commercial stuff --this one --Ice in the Sun--every guitar picker in the eorld knows this intro.

  • Very cool seeing a live version of a song I used to love, back when I was 16.

  • This song was WAY AHEAD OF IT'S TIME. Classic psyc.

  • dig the hair boys (not)

  • Before bands went psychedelic they wore conservative matching suits with nice haircuts and ties. That still amazes me!

  • nice sweater at the beginning

  • @luexiana horrible jimmy saville-nice sweater though

  • CLÁSSICO MUNDIAL.

    EXCELENTE.

  • Dis you see Rossi laughing at the dork dancing at 2 :27

awesome jam from the early Quo

  • Classic!

  • Where has time gone. I'm in my 50's and can't believe it. I was 11 when that song was played.

  • Is that John Mayall playing keyboard?

  • one of my favourites <3

  • those were days man!!!!! those were the days!!!!

id like to grab one of those riding coats, let my moustache long, play a mean guitar and drive around the town with go-go girls...f*** the ipod, ps and all that crap!!!

  • nice

  • Ein Traum-Klassiker..schöner geht's nicht.....

  • Thank God for a young generator who appreciate what we had to go through. I've a fourteen y/o son who enjoys The Move. Good taste runs thin, but long. Peace.

  • The keyboard player is sooo trippin'!!! His pupils are HUGE. Why not, though? This is one of the best trippin' songs ever recorded!!

  • Hey Joe - Hendrix

  • wow pithe , you know a lot of p words

  • Love this...but have to say that the plodding pedestrian so-called boogie-rock style they changed to is...is...well, plodding and pedestrian.

  • lol at jimmy saville uhuhu nowthennowthen

  • LOL! Brilliant - just brilliant! Not just because Francis and gang look so young - but because the phasing in-and-out sound is just absolutely evocative of the period. Twangy guitar bit is just genious!.

  • Ein absoluter Traumsong...diese Musik ist der Wahnsinn !!

  • My girlfriend was playing this record in 1968 at her house and her mother thought the stereo was broken. We still laugh about it today. Great song and was true psychedelic .

  • Hey! we did a lot of LSD then

  • Sickest Song For Sure

  • lol at the guys dancing at 2:02 at the bottom center of the screen!

  • that is easily the most limp wristed drummer i've evr seen!

  • @xanderkand To be fair to John he said he was very nervous being put at the front of the band here. As well as trying to mime the drums. To see the real power of John (Spud) Coghlan. check out the 1970s vid for Paper Plane

  • @xanderkand Its because they're miming maybe?, so they dont actually want any noise from the drums

  • @zoidberg590

Not really. If you watch and listen to the video, when Rossi smiles and nearly grins, you can hear his voice change. They ARE playing live in this one.

  • @xanderkand

You OBVIOUSLY have never seen Keith Moon play drums then.

  • @xanderkand No, there are others, the one I recall here on Youtube is Snoop from the 60s Los Angeles band, Love.

  • @xanderkand lmfao I agree!

  • Ah, the 60s. Psychedelic music, acid rock and just plain turn on, tune in and drop out. This song was very popular with my high school graduation class in 1968.

  • This song has seen many a psychedelic Sundays...

  • This is quite a good song, love the arrangement.

    Many thanks.

    Keep this music alive.

  • You who lurv this: plz also try Spick & Speck, Ice In The Sun & esp. Technicolour Dreams! :)

  • the best quo song

  • tottaly

  • Say? Who is the (american?) mc next to Jimmy Saville? Sounds & Looks a bit like Jimmy O'Neill the host of ABC's tv show 'Shindig'

He was at The 8/65 Richmond Fest as part of 'Shindig Goes To London' which ran over here the following Nov.

  • @12347771 - It's Dave Cash. He is British but had lived in Canada for some years, hence the accent..

  • cant believe this is status quo - amazin song

  • Bands sure knew how to dress back then. Bring back the new romantic Carnaby Street cheescloth Indian prints and Georgian style please. Today's bands all look like they're dressed for raking leaves!

  • I had a closet full of these clothes but lost them in a house fire

  • Matchstick Men always brings to mind spring of '68 , leaving high school and fried fruit pies they sold at the Folly Beach Pier, Charleston S.C. Sorry about your wardrobe...irreplaceable..we need the Fool to get back in business like they did for The Beatles....sew some more class threads!!

  • Yes, when you see colour footage, the band look like the contents of a tin of Quality Street !

  • If I may, What's a 'Quality Street'?

  • You'd understand this joke if you were from the UK.

'Quality Street' is a long established brand of candy. Each piece individually wrapped in one of many vibrant colours.

Large 5lb tins are popular at Christmas.

    Hope this explains !

  • Thanks...I gotta friend in Staines....gonna have him ship me some.....He used to work for Cadbury as it turns out...Thx

  • Quality Street is manufactured by a company called 'Roundtree', but hey, what the heck !

    Cadbury's have a similar product called 'Rose's'.

So you are now well versed in British candy.. Not bad from a youtube coment on Status Quo !

    Regards, John

  • Thank You! Life is for Learning..

  • @12347771

You're obviously not familiar with The Love Me Nots, the Maggots, The Grip Weeds, The Chesterfiled Kings or the Urges. They all dress to thrill...check em out!

  • @Waldenpunk

Grip Weeds ? wasn't 'Gripweed' Lennon's character in 'How I Won The War'?

    Thanks for the referrals!

  • @12347771

Exactly! They're a chicago band and thats where they go their name!

  • @12347771: "Swinging London"

  • @12347771 Hairdos were scary by today's standards.

  • @trzcinarowice hmm. if you look closely all they have to do is turn the hair around 45 degress for one of theose string 'emo' cuts. In other words what hangsover the Quo's ears today would gover Dashboard's forehead. what goes around you might say.

  • todays bands dress like thay sound, absolute shit all these whingy emo indy bullshit bands, people like kasabian are meant to be representing our generation, fuck me thats bad, , england has allways led the world in music, cream, the rolling stones, beatles, the who, , , pink floyd, black sabbath, lets face it the list goes on , but we got nothing now, on either sides of the atlantic, all those blues artists in america, like john lee hooker jimmy hendrix, its a very sad state of affairs,

  • @devilboy66684 .......Amen...Noel Gallagher at least wore some nice threads from time to time....I would say it was Brian Jones who really lit the flame of style that continues here and there. The Prince 'Revolution' era was about the most recent.

  • @devilboy66684 yes you got that right, it sure is bullshit today, all image and no subsatnce at all, even the image shits me, over over commercialisation to DEATH,,,bring back real music please,is there anybody out their who can stir up the imagination and heart again...../??? makes me sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P to a time not so long ago!!!!!!!!!!

  • @devilboy66684

Mate, that's bullshit. You're nor very immersed in modern music huh?

  • @devilboy66684 "england has allways led the world in music"

Yer an idiot; Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, , Elvis, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis...

  • @nimrod1957 You're an idiot, Elvis sucks, the rest is all true :P

  • @nimrod1957 Don't forget Bob Dylan

  • @12347771 To be fair, the Status Quo started dressing in denim and t shirts starting around 1970 when they went from psychedelic to a more blues-boogie band.,

  • Wat unne zwegelemennekes geeeek!!!

  • I see not as many people remember this great song.

  • i remember it well. One of my very favs from early college years. Would love to go back!

  • @HickysBoy

    will follow you!

  • classic

  • I cannot believe I remember all the words!

  • Wot a great camp performance by Roy Lynes lol

  • Haven't heard this song for ages. Thanks so much for posting it. Rock On!

  • Francis Rossi sporting a very, very Steve Marriot hairstyle...

  • omg is that a young eric idle in the beginning??

  • This song is sick, I swear why does music suck now... I was born a decade after this was made but it sounds so fresh!

  • this song (video )really takes me back to 1968 which is funny since i wasnt born until 1979...!

  • Brilliant song, but that's the campest drumming I've ever seen. Still, love the Quo...

  • ahh the wonderful days of unprotected sex with strangers!

  • wow. it's amazing what could be done with just 60's technology. why does modern music suck so badly?

maybe because everything is Auto-Tuned. There is no personality. So the singer's voice wavers a bit. It's supposed to. He's human.

Auto-Tuned singers are not humans. They are computer voices attached to human faces.

  • brilliant

  • Ozzy Osbourne performed this song, and its great!

  • ozzy's version of this song isnt as good as status quo's in my honest opinion. sounds like a cheap rip off really. but then again if you are an ozzy fan you will like most of what he sings so i suppose we have different opinions

  • anybody know the names of all the band in this video?

  • Francis rossi(0:40) Rick prafitt(0:57)Roy lynes(1:10)John Coghlan(1:21)Alan Lancster(2:42)

  • im 15 and love the quo, but theres no enjoyment on their faces wen they play!!! They shud b happy!! So much better than modern music!!

  • The lead singer looks like he could be Naboo's father. The Mighty Boosh!

  • Haha, definitely...

  • out FN standing!

  • One of the best songs from the 60's using phase and the wa wa pedal! Excellent.

  • Those adverts for ITunes are REALLY ANNOYING. I can't even afford a bleeding IPod, never mind the tunes to go on it. Buying this laptop nearly bankrupted me! And I'm on benefits!
