You play a girl wich is at a haunted place (a house, town, etc). There are ghost which just do what they did before they died and some which attack you. You just have a camera as weapon and have to get out of that place alive.

The curse is allways linked to a cruel ritual which failed. The main chara have to free the ghost which has failed (mostly shrine maidens) and lift the curse through this.

If for anything, Hollywood should improve on their foreign film adaptation instead of washing down the quality of them. Ghosts like Sadako are normal in Japanese films and folklore anyway, so it's not like the films are copying anything.
