Of course this interpretation is different, it's Chita Rivera! She's the greatest -- along with Gwen Verdon -- triple-threat (dancing, singing and acting) star in the history of Broadway.
It's such a different interpretation to the Ann Reinking version I just saw here. Very different energy - more like Gwen. She mixed together some original choreography with the new stuff, which is awesome. I think I really like this, but it's just such a different Roxie.
Look, I love her but she goes on and on in the ad libs and she just isn't Roxy Hart. Roxy is coy and disarming. It's okay for Chita not to be good at everything.
I love her, but I agree that there's no way she can play Roxie. She's mugging Gwen Verdon and all it does is make me want to see Gwen Verdon. She's just not vulnerable. That's not in her muscles.
I "kinda" get what you are saying...but, Roxie Hart HAD to be one tough "broad"...she wanted to see her name in the papers, after all...and yes, I LOVE Gwen Verdon, but Roxie has a lot of facets to her, and I think that Chita Rivera hit GOLD...all her own.
She lacks the vulnerability and desperation to please that is Roxie's character. She's kinda self indulgent, and I'm a fan of hers for over 40 years. She was THE Velma, not sure why she started thinking she could play Roxie.

I love Chita, this is HILARIOUS, but the character Roxie itself? I don't think she fits. Can definitely see Velma though.

@winkthatnudge I have seen her do both roles and she was much more appropriate for Velma.

This is one of the best performances of this song I've seen, she adds such a good flair to it.
