So you are saying, if Gassee and Be would have asked for twice less, they would have been in the game? Come on, 2x pay cut should have been done then. Although I like the current MacOS :)
Also, BeOS was written entirely in C++, and linux in C.
It's a recreation of BeOS. BeOS was way ahead of it's time. Be almost sold it's operating system to Apple, but they asked for twice as much as Apple was willing to pay. Instead, they bought NeXT and incorporated NeXT's operating system as the basis for the next (no pun intended) Mac OS, Mac OS X.
@TengriAsura It has to be a perfect clone of BeOS and everything works the same way it did in Be. I hope the drivers works the same so those like myself with R5 can use them.
Apple (gilio amelio) would buy BeOS for $125m, where they wanted $200m. finnally they would be bought by PALM for $20m.
Apple would pay $400 million to buy Jobs's company NeXT.
Modern OS'es still lacks some features of beos, thought, NeXT OS is was a superior os, because of its strong Object Oriented api's, its network and printing capabilities. Everything projected on the screen is post-script-aware. This is crucial for media&printing industries. But BeOS instead would be a perfect server OS.
Before the death of BEos it was made open source so one day it could be resurrected. It's very dynamic but was killed by illegal intervention on microsoft's behalf, Now once the in-development Haiku is stable and made officially available people will quickly develop on it, you will see it develop as an OS for music and video lovers, this will also make the system imperative to have an easy user interface .all they need is a good interface, eye candy will come later, like compiz fusion for Linux

a demonstration of a bunch of shitty, low-grade, useless applications on a dead OS. fascinating. (i particularly liked the multiple demonstrations of the "About" screen.)
Haiku Operating system is based on BeOS, which for it time was far more advanced the Windows, MAC OSX and Linux. the way it handles Preemptive-Multitasking, and thread processing, it could have pwnd Windows, if only it had a larger user-base, and a easier to program API. I guess the OS can still suck but as long as there is a multitude of Applications and a good API e.g. (Win32 and DirectX) it will keep the user happy, like Windows per say.
Yeah I know what you mean. I used play around with BeOS, but it had a very short life. Hopefully Haiku OS will be something more. Looking forward to this one.
As long as it runs my favorite apps (gecko based web browser, VLC, good mail app, flash support, etc.) I will use it without any complaints, but so far it looks like it already does just needs have a stable release. :-)
Haiku is not a Linux distribution. To achieve our goals for Haiku, we decided not to use the Linux kernel, nor to rely on the X Window System or toolkits such as GTK+ or Qt. Instead, Haiku is a self-contained operating system that includes a graphical user interface tightly tied to a unique graphics system, all configuration applications, development tools, the GNU tool chain, and a bash terminal.
Nope, it's not. First of all, OSX is the name of the distripution for OS called DarwinBSD. Now DarwinBSD is an OS based on NextStep internals. NextStep is originated from original BSD. FreeBSD is fork of original BSD. This is just simple way to put it. :P
I don't know the advantages of this system, but the asthetics are lame and look very dated. The quote 'Tidying up a bit' in the shut down window... whats all that about, and why did it take so long to shut down when you hadn't done anything? Looks pointless to me!
So little you know young Jedi, multi CPU, multi threaded all this back in 1998 from BeOS.
It has an amazing feel and response to it, like getting in sports car, looks are not everything. Haiku will be worth it even if I have to wait another 5 years for a stable version.

This has more of Linux similarities. But why do all of these OS exist? You need Windows to run music, video, entertainment applications, and you need (should use) Linux/UNIX to DEVELOPE these applications. So I see no reason to have these many OS.
Haiku should be even better at the end of the summer. They have been accepted into the Google Summer of Code so hopefully that will push things along nicely.
Sorry, I'll post in English. I've tried a BeOS version called Zeta Yellowtab. It hanged during installation in my computer, but I installed in a computer of my university. It was in black and white and without sound, because I hadn't the drivers and I didn't have time to configure it, the network worked properly.
YellowTAB gave the development of ZetaOS to a company called Magnusoft now. I was able to get it to run in MS Virtual PC 2004 so you might want to give that a try. Zeta is actually more functional than Haiku. The Zeta guys used a lot of the open source code from Haiku.
You need internet connection to download the wireless internet software?! WTF?! Haiku, you are gay.

So, is Haiku a perfect clone of BeOS? What about the Haiku kernel?
Sorry that I'm not that familiar with BeOS since I only approached Haiku few times.
I just hope that Japanese company that is still holding the BeOS property totally revamp BeOS for the sake of market stability via technology.
