  • fender hs(S) strat takes the (S)trat out of strat if you get what i meen???

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • but wait.. what if you jump up string guages, wouldnt you have to cut out of the nut or sumthing for the new thicker strings can fit in?

  • thx you bro ! :D

  • sounds like a man who knows his job very well .. awesome

  • how big is your upper lip?

  • What about say a 6 string bass witch has two truss rods?

  • The cover on your les paul is upside down, but good advice on everything, how bout how to intonate the guitar?

  • When i bought my guitar from the guitar shop (epiphone les paul 1956 goldtop) They offered to set it up for me for £20 and trust me... its worth it!

  • Ive got a ibanez sa series.. And ive been trying too get it set up right for about a year... The feeling when picking/strumming seems too be off.. Im tuned too drop B... But its just soo uncomftable too play. Any ideas? Ive got thick string gauge, 4 springs. Ive had a go at loosening/tightning the spring tension...

  • Great video, but you are like the teacher on southpark, you're always saying "MmmmmKay?"

  • Sir the les pauls bell is upside down

  • this dudes good ,and i aint hating on him but MAHNN! HES SCARY ... XD

  • Hey good call for newbies...all important steps. Some guitars are different like older Fenders regarding truss rods. My old Charvel needs the entire neck to be removed to adjust the truss rod. Poor design but my fave neck and a not a prob for me. It is a tool. Your guitar is your tool so know it. It'snot rocket science. The Mfg made these things to be used, abused, and repaired.

  • Very Informative. Thanks Lots.

  • @tomstrat1 thank you very understandable

  • You may be able to adjust truss rods, but refitting the cover on your LP must be a harder task.

You sure didn't get right this time.

  • when i adjust the bridge block height when putting thicker strings on, do i have to loosten the screws holding down the tremolo on the top of the body before adjusing the claw?

  • I feel like he's staring into my soul, but he had a lot of good informantion that i have had trouble finding so that ok.

  • Great vid thanks

  • Davids the BEST!!!

  • dude your videos are so simple, but i love them. theyre some of the most informative and easy to understand guitar help videos on youtube. also, i love that strat =) i wanted to get one and put a pearloid pickguard on it but i couldnt find one to see what it looked like, but now i know its as beautiful as i pictured it. great video man.

  • Great summary. Nice guitar collection too. Thanks

  • <3 the breadwinner on the wall

  • Hilarious, just put on captions and ENJOY.

  • YARRRRR pirate xD

  • Hey I have a few problems with my guitar.

When I play a harmonic on the 12th fret of the high e-string and then a normal note on the 12th fret it isn't completely right, like the string is sliiiightly out of tune. I guess this is the intonation, right? How should I fix this? Also i'd like to put the strings closer to the fretboard because the action's pretty high, but when I do this, I get fret buzz on the low e-string. Thanks in advance. (My guitar is an epiphone les paul by the way)

  • @JulesVermeij i would personally take it into a guitar shop because the trust rod can only do so much, if the neck is warped in more than one place no matter what you do it will not be perfect so try taking it into a guitar shop because at least that way, if they screw up they will give your money back

  • @BountyHunter233 Okay thanks, i'll take it to a guitar shop then.

  • Love It

  • @skkittlezz I charge a shop rate of 20 bucks an hour at my store. A full setup takes a max of 2 hours without fret work. New strings and all normally runs my customers about 60. Just remember a good luthier is like a good tailor. An expensive suit looks awful if it wasn't adjusted for you but a cheaper one that is makes you look like a million bucks. I don't use expensive guitars myself (epiphone lp customs and old charvels) but I would put my gear against any "high end" players in town

  • I just had a new acoustic guitar set up. He adjusted the truss rod, polished my frets and adjusted the saddle (bridge). It plays bad ass now and it cost me 93 bucks. Worth it. You can make your $100 guitar sound like a $300 guitar.

  • @luckyscout77 lol maybe its because you put 200 into a 100 dollar guitar. and i hate to break it to you but theres not a whole lot of diff between 100 and 300 dollart guitars...both are cheap entry level acoustics that wont be worth anything in a year or two

  • i only have 3 springs in the back of my guitar and the block is really high but i can't screw the screws in any more. what do i do to make it flat against the body of the guitar?

  • @XysflightchampX buy some more springs, you can get them in most guitar shops.

  • @fliski666 do I need to know anything specific or do i just say " can I have two springs for my guitar?"

  • @XysflightchampX you could also take it to a guitar shop and theyll do it for you but you have to pay them like i think i payed $200 or something but i had to do other stuff with my guitar so its up to you

  • @skkiittllezz but my guitar isn't even worth $100 let alone $200?? ya i know but my family is poor and i really wanted a guitar

  • @XysflightchampX i think just lowering that peice will be like $50 still kinda expensive but on my guitar i had a ton of fixes

  • @skkiittllezz well i wanted my entire guitar set up but idk how much that will cost...

  • i have a fender and when i fret the first fret it wont play it rattles but the rest of the frets play well what do you think it is

  • @ironmanzach1 your action is too low, you need to higher the string(s) that happens on.

  • this is a fender strato, this is a paul r, this is a gibson les paul.... i envy you

  • AHHHH he stole my Strat!!!!! =p Great vid

  • Absolutely LOVE that Strat. HSS are my faves

  • A couple of questions, does anyone know how to set up the intonation for a wilkinsons tremelo? And what if I'm missing a spring in the back? Is that bad?

  • @TheSpartanPhalanx adjusting the intonation on all bridges is pretty much the same. i don't know exactly where the adjustment screws are on wilkinsons, but the same rules apply if you can locate them. you can add or remove springs in tremolos. it just affects the tension of the trem. it is a matter of preference on how many you want in there. the tension needs to be evenly distributed though.

  • the GUITAR E.R. if you're in NY, LI area.

  • Thanks a lot for posting this. Its hard to get such clear instructions.

  • Best video ever. Explaining everything i need to know about my guitar's problems. I was searching for about 3 hours now to find a video like this. DAMN, NOW I CAN SLEEP!! peace

  • Good job on this video. Very helpful.

  • would you re set up my guitar?¿

  • take off this stupid hat, it looks moronic

  • This channel is called "rockongoodpeople" and not "hatstylesforgoodpeople."

Their site is called "Next Level Guitar" and not "Next Level Headwear."

  • I've always felt funny about running the tremolo-claw screws in and out, to level the bridge. It just seems to me that running a wood screw in and out of the body will loosen them over time. I generally have the 3 'stock' springs installed, for .09 strings. If I move to .10 I replace the middle spring with a 'stiffer' one (I've replaced the tremolo on one of my guitars, so I have an extra set). If I go heavier gauge, I can add a spring, or play with the soft/stiff ratio to get back to level.

  • @stephmon BTW, I was suprised to see 5 springs installed in the strat... Are they weak pullers, or do you like your trem 'blocked' really hard?

  • bring it to a pro

  • fat strat :D

  • hey can anyone tell me how adjusting the tailpiece on my les paul will affect it?

  • Thanks David!

  • Mkaaayy.

  • Very nice and interesting video ;)

  • WHATS UP GOOD PEOPLE!

  • DUDE! I had an Ovation Viper EXACTLY like the one in the background. It was my first electric guitar and I always think about how much I would love to have it back!

  • The expert village for people who actually want experts

  • Thanx for the Info

  • At about 5:20, did you say "quarter turn" or "quite a turn"? Just want to have an idea of how much turning of the truss rod is required. I'd hate to break my new MIM Strat.

Btw, really appreciate your vids! Very helpful to this newbie.

  • @iAlien he said quarter turn thats all it needs for adjustment

  • @iAlien quarter turn

  • great video!!! ive been playing for 5 years and and always been weary about adjusting my truss rod. Ive had my local guitar shop do my adjusting for me because i had been afraid of causing damage as far as truss rod adjusting goes. i think i now have the confidence, when my yearly "tune-up" comes around to do it myself... thanks a ton!!!

  • @A7J123 yes, you would. It's not hard though. There are plenty of tutorial vids on yt detaling truss rod adjustments. Good luck. :)

  • I use 12 gauged strings on my Les Paul and I wanna switch to 10 would I have to adjust the truss rod

  • your an abs king (Y)

  • cool

  • nice strat mate and great info

  • thank you so much for this video!!

i have a question, i would like to change necks... can i just loose and tighten another neck or is there specifications acording to the guitar.

i want a ibanez neck (from a rg series) on a "helvada" guitar sorta like the early fender guitars but they have the "thrust rod" near the pickups. thanks =)

  • @m0n4c3

some necks are wider, narrower, have different mounting spacing,3 screws,4 or even 5 and some necks arent bolted, theyre set or a permenant part of the guitar.

also theres a pocket were the neck sits in and it needs to fit firmly or the neck will sort of wiggle around even when tight and go out of tune and intonation, hope this helps.

  • Excellent explanation.

Q: Is this something every guitarist should learn to do for himself or not? What does a 'good guy' (7:40 ) do that you cant do yourself?

  • Hi Dude,

Just wondering why your truss rod cover on your les paul standard is upside down??? Thank you for posting how to do a reasonably good set up on a guitar.

Any suggestions on how to do a flat-top that don't have any bridge height adjustments other than shaving it down?

    Thanks, Dber

  • That sienna sunburst is sexy first of all. Secondly, when I got my new Fender American Standard Strat, the guy I bought it from gave me a deal for an extra $100, I get unlimited setups for the next 2 years for free. I'm a clutz, so I took the deal, and he said I'd definitely bring in my guitar more than 4 times within those 2 years. I really haven't noticed anything, but should I bring it in anyways? Should I just go to the store and say "I just need a good setup." when I bring it in? Thanks!

  • @legumes12 You already paid for them, so you may as well take advantage of it.

  • WHATS UP GOOD PEOPLE lol

  • i've got a major problem with the intonation on my stratocaster!

the fretted 12th note on my high e string is extremely flat compared to the 12th harmonic

so i've done the right thing and moved the saddle towards the neck. But, i've moved the saddle as far as it can go and the fretted 12th note is still majorly flat!

what can i do? any help would be appreciated

  • @uh0hSpaghettio try changing strings. If they're worn, you'll never be in tune.

  • Thanks for another clear lesson. Youtube guitar sensei

  • @soraomnislash5 depends on the truss rod. i know some companies use carbon fiber truss rods (not sure how well those work) and some like rickenbacker use two truss rods. so maybe, maybe not

  • Dude is baked.

  • The truss rod cover on your les paul is upside cover.

  • @RaPogi72 whats makes you say that

  • Comment removed

  • truss rod cover is the wrong way round PAL

  • Thanks. Very informative! I have a better perspective now.

  • i changed from 0.9 to 0.10

how much should i spin the termolo block height?

and... the e string gets muted when i bend it more than a tone up....

changed the intonation and it didnt help much... is it because of the height?

  • @zivmeiri didn't help what much?.. The Intonation? take a tuner and measure the 12th fret harmonics and compare them to the actual 12th fret note.. if the fretted note is flat you need to shorten the string.. move the saddle towards the neck; if its sharp move it away.. if the saddle is maxed out you need to adjust your neck, I'd take it to a guitar tech if thats the case

  • how much does it cost to have your guitar profesionally set up? I'm from uk by the way and have a strat. Any ideas anyone?

  • 15 to 60 bucks.

  • @jakeyboy2929: It completely depends on where/who you ask to do it. It's usually quite cheap, about £20 maybe? Just go to your local shop and ask.

    Hope this helped.

  • I LOL at 5:19

  • i have an Ibanez grg !! does both the bridge and neck pick ups need to be on the same height ?

  • @GuitarHero9467 No they don't. and they probably shouldn't. I have a Gibson special faded SG and i got it with the bridge pickup higher than the neck pickup. and it's better to have the pickups at different heights because that gives you more variety of tones to play all sorts of styles of guitar playing. I like to play metal and i use the bridge pickup alot because its higher and better for palm muting but my lower neck pickup is better to use for clean tones or blues.

  • There is no right height. If you adjust them higher or lower it will change the sound, play them and see which you prefer.

  • @GuitarHero9467 It's a good question. If your pickup is too high (ie, too CLOSE to the string) you may get buzzing (string hitting pickup) or loss of sustain. That strong magnet can actually dampen the vibration, the closer you are. If you set the pickup too low, it may not hear the signal as loudly.

  • Might be worth an experiment for you to figure out the two limits, and then choose a setting somewhere in between that you like.

Another thought: Compare your three pickups by playing each one at a time. Is one MUCH LOUDER than the other two? Lower it away from the strings. Is one MUCH quieter? Get it closer to the strings.

  • @fenderstratguy A good place to start is to hold the LOW E down and then the HIGH E down while you adjust each side, The measurement you look for to start is 3/32 (low e) and 2/32 (high e) for the bridge pcikup and 4/32 (low e) and 3/32 (high e) on the neck pickup. Again these measurements are taken while your holding down the LAST FRET on the high or low e stings (depending on which side your adjusting). When done match the sound of the two pickups.

  • @nickothompson So you're saying set it there to start, and then adjust from there to get acceptable (matching) volume levels, right?

  • @nickothompson just a question, what do those measurements mean? i think i need to adjust my pickups. also, if my pick ups are too close to the strings, does that cause a lot of background noise?

  • @GuitarHero9467 There are probably guys who like one pickup to be different; most probably prefer all pickups balanced. Otherwise when you play two at a time, you only hear the one.

  • I have a bad fret buzz at the first two fret both low e and a string new guitar How do i fix this?

  • @DaGuitarlearner69 Take it and have it professionally set-up.

  • @DaGuitarlearner69

it might need a new nut /levelling of the nut or a proper setup of string hieght

  • My guitar doesnt have a micro tilt hole on the back, it plays well on the top frets but it gets harder on the bottom ones. Is there a way to micro tilt on a guitar without the little hole?

  • this is amazing, this just showed me how much i dont freaking know. im always switching string gauges, and that cant be good for the guitar. just a very good video. 5 stars

  • @jeffgnr It's not bad for the guitar, it just requires some tweaking to your setup so that everything can perform as good as it can.

  • What kind of Les Paul was that? Never seen inlays like that on a Paul.

  • i only got three springs on my tremelo block so what i do to switch from light to heavy guage strings

  • In what order should these adjustments be made: would it be: 1) adjust trossrod 2) set action 3)tune guitar 4)set intonation.

  • if i lower my action will it change the sound of my guitar?

  • No it doesn't change the sound- it makes the strings closer to the neck. Closer string are easier to play, but if they are too close the notes will buzz and sound nasty. You have to get it just right for what you like, closer or farther from the neck.

  • Actually, lower action WILL alter the tone due to less tension on the string when pressed down. Most people notice a fuller tone with higher action, but of course; it's a little harder to play. I usually set my action as high as is comfortable with good tone. It depends on the guitar, and the player, though...

  • actually yeah. It will affect the sound. The sustain is longer and the attack is less piercing compared to the sustain when the string is further from the pickup. This and the ability to feel where the strings are better are the main benefits to higher setups. Lower action is easier to play fast. I like to press down the first fret and the last fret on the big E and measure the space between with a pick.

  • no you f-in rock on!

  • thanks david, that helped me the-shit out, my tremolo was raised as high as rats. I though my axe was near death.

  • You turdmunchers. This guy is trying to teach you morons how to set up your guitar. You feel the need to exhibit your stupidity and make stupid comments? Go munch your sister's panties and spit the juice into your dad's eye.

  • i have ibanez gio grg170dx and it is quite cheap. the problem is I cannot use tremelo bar, it makes guitar easily out of tune. any way to fix?

  • doont use tremolo unless u plan on tuning often, u would probly need a tremolo lock nut at the top of the neck.

  • yeah. you can buy and install a trem-setter. it's a gadget that goes back there amongst your trem springs. its more accurate though. but when you change gauges youll still have inconsistencies.

  • 'On the Gibson's it has what's called ahh...for the bridge you can adjust the height etc' What's it called?

  • @clean3 saddle. the one were you adjust the height from two screws that go into the body rite. its were you adjust the intonation to

  • tune o' matic bridge

  • There's a company called markone audio who make some useful stuff to help out with this. check them out at markoneaudio*co*uk (use . instead of the * !!)

  • nice fuckin' head

  • i like when he say that what´s up good people ? :D

  • the truss rod cover for the les paul looked a little....upside down. .. .. .hahaha.

  • @ladicius haha yeah

  • @ladicius why is that?

  • @1jack369 because it was upside down. google some images of a les paul standard.

  • @ladicius

    from a lefty

  • @HendrikMss incorrect.

  • @ladicius he giggled too lol

  • @ladicius xD

  • @ladicius gives it better vibes :P

  • i dont wont him showing me how to do anything, i think he is slightly misinformed about many things

  • better get someone that knows do it

  • Setting up your guitar is a bitch, if you have no experience with this, you should let an expert explain, and do it for ya. like David.

  • This seems like a pain in the ass to setup a guitar. I just got my guitar a few days ago and then the high E started buzzing so I took it back to guitar center and they charged me 30 and i had to buy my own strings was it a ripoff or not

  • yo man in the uk you pay anything from £20-and up just depends on what setup your after.if you like me dont know about seting up the guiter then just pay someone who knows how to.hope this help you.from the uk

  • @mrnomads1 lol thats a rip of for someone tightening some screws

  • 5:20 boner XD

  • Be carfeul with adjusting the truss rod, you can ruin the neck if u dont know what ur doing. That is the last thing I would do. Dont turn more than 1/8 at a time, then recheck your tuner.

  • when adjusting the action, if i raise the bridge, shouldn´t i raise the nut too, to keep the strings at the same height all across the fretboard?

  • thank you from uk

  • the truss rod cover on your les paul is on backwards buddy

  • @charlieander

haha yeah, what the hell is up with that? :P

  • I think he did that on purpose, he had abit of a smirk when he showed it... ;-)

  • What about the nut? That's a pretty darn important part of the guitar...especially with new guitars.

  • 5:20 .. xD so funny.

    Nice, very good video.

  • Hey, very good video. I found it very informative. Liked it so much that I went to your website to check it out but none of the links were working. What's up with that?

  • hi man thx..look man I hate rap but u look like YANKOVIC..hehe \m/ metal rules

  • your guitar is like mine but i have 1 more peace of iron i dont know wath they call it lol do you know???? it is exectly were you are touching at 2:31

  • It sounds like a string saddle. Do you have a 7-string?

  • i have a problem with my amp cable... when i plug it in my guitar the cable keeps on falling off it doesnt stay hooked up how can i fix that??

  • hey i think you allready know this but your trust rod cover on your les paul is up side down lol

  • "hello peopal"

  • xDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • Thank you so much for your advice

    It really helped a lot.

  • this guy looks like my uncle it's kinda creepin me out.

  • Keep calm, turn the computer off and go and sit quietly in the corner of the room for 10 minutes. The feeling of anxiety will gradually fade,

  • is your uncle named Doug?

  • this is a Lonestar strat !

    very good stuff

  • is it me or is the les paul truss rod cover upside down...?

  • yea it is he has a custom les paul

  • kk thx

  • isnt that the way that the old les pauls were made?

  • i dunno :S lol

  • I know what action is, but I didn't know it affected intonation. I appreciate you correcting me, I'm still learning myself. I know string gauge affects the intonation. I meant that this video shows HOW to adjust the intonation.
