See there's REASON they call this stuff the golden age of Hollywood!!
It gives the film medium a sense of identity that cannot be matched in today's society. I mean seriously, can you see Taylor Lautner doing anything this magical? Let alone seeing a movie studio try to do something like this again?
This is where the 'magic' comes from. And as long as we can appreciate it, it will always be there for us :-) Like like like!!!
Not sure what it is....whether today's celebrities just are not as talented or if they just are not allowed to show their true talents.....the older stars (Kelly, Garland, Astaire, Sinatra, Davis Jr....just to name a few) it seems could do it all. Sing, dance, act, and then some. Maybe people are too narrowly focused and try to specialize in just one thing now.
what's happened to society? why aren't things like this anymore? now everything is about sex and drugs.. why can't it just be about loving and my gal anymore?
@AOG93 I haven't heard anything about Judy ever sleeping around or being all about sex. Judy did abuse drugs because she was consistently making one movie after the other once she was signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which made for a hectic schedule and Judy, Mickey Rooney, and others were given amphetamines and barbiturates to "help" them perform.
Judy wasn't all about drugs. She couldn't help the drug addiction and it ended up being a lifelong struggle, ending in her death.
@miss9starr7 Yeah right. The Cold War, two World Wars, the constant terror of utter nuclear annihilation, people bashing up other people and hanging them from trees because of the colour of their skin. It was a real cake walk back then.
The one & only Judy Garland. Perfect, tiny little dynamo of talent. The studio doctors got her started on drugs to keep her weight off. Then she needed another drug to let her fall asleep. I do believe that created her life-long struggle with addiction. Her spirit lives each time we view & remember.
Good Gracious. I love Judy Garland soooo much. She is so beautiful and her voice is the greatest thing I have ever heard! Too bad entertainment now-a-days hasn't the slightest idea of what talent is. It is a shame. <3
You know what I can't eat for breakfast?...Luncheon and dinner! Love it! These two make it look so easy! Their brand of perfection comes along only once in the history and unfolding of the universe.
I'm 18 years old, my mom and dad loved these old singers, comedians and actors, they loved the classic movies and I was lucky enough to grow up (in the 1990's!) with the likes of Gene Kelly, Milton Berle, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart. All of these wonderful starts, and a heck of a lot more, were introduced to me by my parents, and my golly am I thankful. We just don't have the same level of talent nowadays.
@OurGangFan I completely agree with you. Our culture today has accepted so much crap as talent, Gene and all the people with real talent up there are crying from Heaven. Well, at least they have good music in Heaven now that Gene and MJ are up there.
@OurGangFan Who compared Bieber and Cyrus to Garland and Kelly in the first place? And why is Justin Bieber always spoken of as though he's the only singer working today?
They are both one-offs and absolutely great, but I can't take my eyes off her whenever she's on the screen. it's not that she's so pretty, and that skirt is all wrong, but her personality is just electric, I've never seen anything like it. It must have been wonderful to work with her when she was in her prime.
floridaguy107, are u using a non-computer based browser? It plays a different song on mobile browser but if played on a computer browser should play the original music.
It's so great to see a musical number that doesn't have a cut every three seconds. Gene Kelly said he never forgot how nice Judy was to him on his first film; it's why he was so patient with her on her last film with MGM when she was troubled and not showing up on the set. Apparently it took six months to complete(an extremely long time in those days) but he remained loyal to her.
How odd. I'm viewing this from my iPhone YouTube app and there is a song playing (sick as a dog?) instead of the sound from the film. However, when I view this same video from the YouTube webpage through safari it's normal.

@westsidestory97 Do not mistake art for life. 1) Gene Kelly came across as the nicest guy in the world on camera; in real life he could be a sonofabitch---e.g., when he and Stanley Donen first met, Kelly was the lead and Donen was in the chorus, and Kelly NEVER let Donen forget that. 2) Kelly was not even faintly bisexual, which meant he was NOT Garland's type. Cinnamon39 When your perscribed drugs by a doctor that means your being told or forced to take them, da. So she did what she was told because that's what actresses did in her era. You can't blame the patient but you can blame the overzelious medical profession da. Look at how happy clinics are about performing abortions these days I think it's called the right to choose, which really isn't a choice at all but more of some freekish mandate.
Vengeance509 - . . . "Filthy orifices" are reserved for you. I have better things to do. Obviously your mother should have swallowed. BTW, did all your mother's children have single digit IQs? (For the record, I "threw no cheap insults at Judy Garland". She opened her mouth and swallowed the pills and the booze. That is a FACT. Case closed. Time for your nap now. Go bye-bye!
@Cinnamon39 Yeah, ass-wipe, try to imagine what it is like to support your ENTIRE ADULT FAMILY from the time you are 5 years old, which Garland did. And had a mother that pumped her, from age 9 (NINE!) with amphetamines & barbiturates.
Jesus, she's lucky she died at 47 so she missed moronic crap from ignorant fuck-asses like you.
As it is, this tiny woman packed more awesome success into 47 years than any of the monkeys of today.
@Vengeance509 - You have a filthy mouth and you are mis-informed. It is unfortunate that you are unable to carry on a normal discourse without becoming so vulgar and rude. Your comments are those of an ignoramus.
@Cinnamon39 I'm thrilled that you think my mouth is filthy, as I expect you know your way around particularly filthy orifices. One also wonders: "Did Cinnamon's mother write his retort for him?" Your reply is a trifle slapdash. You may be able to throw cheap insults at Judy Garland, but in terms of discourse, you are hapless.
Moreover, you lack the remotest amount of wit and your mother likely wanted to abort you, changed her mind at the last minute, and then regretted it.
@anniemann101 I do not believe that her not being able to dance is true. I seem to recall Gene talking about her, and, how when she was shown a step, she picked it up. One of the things I like best about the scene is the sign on the wall "Where There Is Music, There's Love". A great slogan if the music does in fact do so.
His first film and he gets to sing, dance, and kiss Judy Garland. WOW.

Go bye-bye!

I watched this with my grandmother and I asked her, "What the hell is wrong with these actors, grandma?"
She replied, " Oh, that's just talent."

Why did America treat Judy so bad?
MrFalconford 1 year ago
@MrFalconford - America didn't treat Judy Garland bad. She treated herself to booze and pills. That was her downfall!
Cinnamon39 1 year ago
@Cinnamon39 Technically, it was L.B.Mayer that "treated" her to booze and pills. She didn't really have a choice in the matter.

No respect. No one has an ounce of respect today.

@Vengeance509 - You have a filthy mouth and you are mis-informed. It is unfortunate that you are unable to carry on a normal discourse without becoming so vulgar and rude. Your comments are those of an ignoramus.
Cinnamon39 1 year ago
@Cinnamon39 I'm thrilled that you think my mouth is filthy, as I expect you know your way around particularly filthy orifices. One also wonders: "Did Cinnamon's mother write his retort for him?" Your reply is a trifle slapdash. You may be able to throw cheap insults at Judy Garland, but in terms of discourse, you are hapless.
Moreover, you lack the remotest amount of wit and your mother likely wanted to abort you, changed her mind at the last minute, and then regretted it.
So do I.

there was always something about Gene Kelly that made him so unbelievably charming, he makes me smile hahahaha :)

Judy is the only partner that Gene Kelly danced with where you look at her more than him. She was really something truly special.
