  • *gasp* is it really this fast?

  • @shshsud Hah! Listen to the upload on MY channel =D (Edgar Meyer)

  • He is a great Double Bass performer.

  • @nash1820 Yes it's written in solo tuning. But as you and I know, the Bass is a transposing instrument. It can be done either way.

  • im considering learning this soon, is this in solo tuning? or normal?

  • This is my favorite recording of the Bottesini, and it's a live video on YouTube! Do you have a better recording quality version for sale anywhere?

  • @ejs011

thanks for your kind comment! Unfortunately, I don't have another recording....but hopefully someday :)

  • Just great... I can't say much more... amazing... astonishing...

  • Great Performance

  • little intonation problem.

  • @bassbass99able

I agree with you, although considering the motorcycle accident I had a few days before this concert and playing with pains in my both hands, it was the best I could do

  • @bassocat Other than that it actually was a very good preformance, I hope to be able to play this as my college audition piece in the future. Hope you didn't take my comment personally.

  • i started bass in fourth grade because it was the biggest instrument. i did it to piss off my mom. i inadvertently picked on of the most beautiful instruments ever created.

  • I'm going to pick up my bass again. It was built in 1896 in Dresden but it's been sitting in the corner for 2 years. Time to start again.

  • @dimflamingo How could an instrument that epic go unplayed for 2 years!?

    :(

It must have been very lonely!

If you ever need someone to "babysit" it for you, im available! :D

  • i love the sound of youre bass its soo beatifull!

  • i love the sound of youre bass!! i'm just started with bass after 6 years of clarinet now i do both and i love it!

  • This video makes me want to study with you. Sounds great!!!

  • @eliseoborrero i have exactually the same!

    excelente contrabaixista e professor!

o masterclass dele me ajudou muito!

  • Fantastic performance!

His tone, expression, musicality and interpretation are top notch.

I have to assume that his liberty in bowings and rhythm in a few places are part of that as well, as they sound very purposeful.

There are unfortunately a few minor intonation errors that do diminish the quality of this performance slightly, but it is a very hard piece so its okay.

  • Of course, the playing is superb. But the sound of this bass is just incredible. It sounds like an old masterpiece, without all those edges that new basses often have. The tone is incredible. After having played the bass for 30 years, I can say that players like Gary Karr would wish to have such a sound. So my final conclusion is: In 2nd position, you should activate your 2nd finger more to support... no, of course, I am kidding ;-) Sell anything, but not this bass!!! :-)

  • wonderful tone!

  • This is great sound quality! Thanks for posting this.

  • This is Catalin!!!

  • fantastico

  • Good lord.

  • god he plays this so well

  • fucken arpeggios...fucken A

  • ?? what do u mean?

  • Which Concerto No 2. is this exactly? Theres A min and B min =(

  • there is only one; you play it in A minor on the bass but it sounds in B minor due to the solo tuning

  • AMAZING intonation at the break... holy shit

  • you re just a poor person aja , i wish you could play th e1% of this guy

  • FANTASTIC PLAYNG!

  • His bow control is impeccable. i would die for this technique. Wow...

  • or you could just work towards it.

  • Ficou lindo! Adorei.

  • Bravo!!!Great!!! his cd - Brahms 1st cello sonata, Rachmaninov cello sonata & Bach's Chiaccone - is .. great too))

  • i´am very impresed by his bow technik. this absolte perfection alows him to really do what he wants. we all can learn of it..

  • really really great!! A very different interpretation from the Edgar Meyer (which is also great of course!). He really needs to release a CD!

  • Mister Rotaru!!!i can only say GREAT!!!!!

  • Exact :)

  • i love the vibrato!

  • Bravissimo!!!!!!!!

  • dude I love the bottesini concertos.I've been palying bass for 5 years and i think Your shifting is amazing, nice bow choice. This is probably going to be my next solo I'm going to work on

  • I'm a big fan of Dragonetti and Bottesini ^^ I love their concertos!

  • this guy is seriously amazing.

    Musicality- 10/10 + he's a technical beast.

  • jeez, what did classical bass players do before you tube! Fantastic. I have my semester repertoire sorted now!

  • hahaha... i've done the same thing....

    go basses!!!

    lol

  • Dear Catalin,

great your performance here on YT.

You must have to record Cds much more. I like your musical ideas. The italian double bass, I think, is incredible. BRAVISSIMO

    Vito (Italy)

  • bravisimo

  • what a player, what a sound! maybe one day...

  • What an exceptional performance. Listening to it I lament that composers like Dvorak did not write a concerto for the bass. One of the most famous reviews of a concert of Heifetz stated: "He played every note". This holds true for this performance as well.

  • Crap, and this glorious man was almost my bass professor (I go to University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point)

    bravo...

    marian is-ams

  • what a sound !!! Even playing whit a German Bow, he has a great "touch", Bravissimo:

  • what the hell is that supposed to mean?!!?

  • I mean that german bow is deemed to have a great "cavata" but a rude sound cuz of his structure when the french bow is deemed exactly the opposite, so if he has that sweet sound BRAVO!

  • yeah no joke man!

  • amazing tone

  • Awesome job Catalin!

  • I love the cadenza

  • woao.. its amazing

  • amazing! especially the tone

  • Great job! I just fell in with this piece when I heard you play it.

  • Caro Catalin,

what a beautiful sound!!! Tom Martin was right:"This Luciano Golia plays like a very ancient instrument". This "live" Bottesini 1st mvt. is one of highest level I have ever heard. You make music and sing with a double bass. BRAVISSIMO!

"BASSIC CELLO NOTES" is your Cd in which a man called Gary KARR says:"This recording is a high standar example of superb bass playing and great musician ship".

    Ciao

    VL

  • This feature is so moving, clear and passionate. Thank you so very much!

  • 10 Years ago I had the honor of studying with and playing in a bass section Catalin in Illinois. What an amazing musician and great guy. Just as good at drinking with as is with playing with as well!!

  • It's an old Double bass ?

  • Actually no, it's a 2 years old Italian bass made by Luciano Golia.

  • @rparucci Nice, you get to nurture a young bass.

  • His bass has one of the most beautiful, sweetest tones ever. It makes me want to steal it, haha no. He almost makes me want to switch to german bow.

  • Gorgeous !

  • This bassist is a good result of passion of music and life.

(I would like to know I little more about this doublebass player. I am sorry for my English.) Me desculpem pelo meu Ingles.

  • Grande performance do concerto No. 2 de Bottesini. Estou impressionado!!

Abraco.

  • Thank you all for the nice comments! Everything he plays sounds just like this, very musical and expressiv. You should check out his recently released CD "Bass*ic cello notes"; it's absolutely incredible and you can find it everywhere on the internet. Just search by the title or his name. I will ask him if he has more videos so I can post them here.

  • Pure passion and soul.

  • Catalin is the man, and will soon take the bass world by storm. See him play a live full recital at the International Society of Bassists Convention June 4-9, 2007, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is sure to be one of the high points of the convention!

  • This guy is Great!!! He plays with heart. This is a "new" Bottesini! Perfect Phrases. Great interpretation. Thank you for this video.
