I agree with you, although considering the motorcycle accident I had a few days before this concert and playing with pains in my both hands, it was the best I could do
@bassocat Other than that it actually was a very good preformance, I hope to be able to play this as my college audition piece in the future. Hope you didn't take my comment personally.
i started bass in fourth grade because it was the biggest instrument. i did it to piss off my mom. i inadvertently picked on of the most beautiful instruments ever created.
His tone, expression, musicality and interpretation are top notch.
I have to assume that his liberty in bowings and rhythm in a few places are part of that as well, as they sound very purposeful.
There are unfortunately a few minor intonation errors that do diminish the quality of this performance slightly, but it is a very hard piece so its okay.
Of course, the playing is superb. But the sound of this bass is just incredible. It sounds like an old masterpiece, without all those edges that new basses often have. The tone is incredible. After having played the bass for 30 years, I can say that players like Gary Karr would wish to have such a sound. So my final conclusion is: In 2nd position, you should activate your 2nd finger more to support... no, of course, I am kidding ;-) Sell anything, but not this bass!!! :-)
dude I love the bottesini concertos.I've been palying bass for 5 years and i think Your shifting is amazing, nice bow choice. This is probably going to be my next solo I'm going to work on
What an exceptional performance. Listening to it I lament that composers like Dvorak did not write a concerto for the bass. One of the most famous reviews of a concert of Heifetz stated: "He played every note". This holds true for this performance as well.
I mean that german bow is deemed to have a great "cavata" but a rude sound cuz of his structure when the french bow is deemed exactly the opposite, so if he has that sweet sound BRAVO!
what a beautiful sound!!! Tom Martin was right:"This Luciano Golia plays like a very ancient instrument". This "live" Bottesini 1st mvt. is one of highest level I have ever heard. You make music and sing with a double bass. BRAVISSIMO!
"BASSIC CELLO NOTES" is your Cd in which a man called Gary KARR says:"This recording is a high standar example of superb bass playing and great musician ship".
10 Years ago I had the honor of studying with and playing in a bass section Catalin in Illinois. What an amazing musician and great guy. Just as good at drinking with as is with playing with as well!!
(I would like to know I little more about this doublebass player. I am sorry for my English.) Me desculpem pelo meu Ingles.
Ola Antonio, O professor catalin estara ministrando o curso de contrabaixo no Festival de Musica de Londrina. Meu nome e Rossine, sou de Londrina e estoudo com ele aqui no Arizona. Thank you all for the nice comments! Everything he plays sounds just like this, very musical and expressiv. You should check out his recently released CD "Bass*ic cello notes"; it's absolutely incredible and you can find it everywhere on the internet. Just search by the title or his name. I will ask him if he has more videos so I can post them here.
Catalin is the man, and will soon take the bass world by storm. See him play a live full recital at the International Society of Bassists Convention June 4-9, 2007, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is sure to be one of the high points of the convention!

@nash1820 Yes it's written in solo tuning. But as you and I know, the Bass is a transposing instrument. It can be done either way.

im considering learning this soon, is this in solo tuning? or normal?

I'm going to pick up my bass again. It was built in 1896 in Dresden but it's been sitting in the corner for 2 years. Time to start again.
