Christian Bale isn't the best dancer, but at least he made a clear effort. He was a good actor in this movie, and he had a great singing voice (shame he never used it again). Some of the celebrities these days don't even try; they do whatever they think is good even if it looks like crap. Like Selena Gomez; her "singing" voice is autotuned, her acting sucks, and I wouldn't be surprised if she had a dancing double for that Cinderella movie.

You want to know what makes this movie better by leaps and bounds than HSM? There was actually some significance to the story. The newsies had something major to lose if they went through with the whole "riot against Pulitzer" thing. Beatings, murders, the movie doesn't really get into it, but these kids were literally risking their lives (not the actors, obviously, but the kids they're portraying). This one act changed an industry, and doubtless played into child labor legislation later on.

Before they even started shooting they spent a month getting the kids in shape and teaching them to sing, dance, and stage fight. No auto-tuning. They don't make musicals like they used to. Hell, they didn't even when Newsies was made. They were going back to a traditional form of film making that was, technically, too freaking expensive to do even in the early 90's.

"Proud and defiant, we'll slay the giant..." what could that be other than an act of aggression towards Pulitzer? Of course, then there's "the World Will Know" which is basically giving Pulitzer the finger. You'd think people walking by would think these kids were nuts or something. Not just for singing in the streets, but for what they're saying.
