as i watch this i am fasinated by miss colberts use of the word duh not once but several times meaning of course yes.keep in mind this is 1959 i was born in 1962 and i dont remember that term being used untill at the very least the late 1980's
VERY funny clip....the late great Groucho pretty much has taken over the show! Thank you VERY much for posting this. When Mr Cerf asks if the mystery guest is related to a Southern Congressman, he obviously thought it might have been Tallulah ("Dahling") Bankhead, whose dad was once Speaker of the House. Great episode!
LMAO! Groucho, who doesn't have his mask on right, tells one of the others or mutters it to himself "it's Claudette Colbert" as Colbert's signing in. You can hear him on mic say it way down low in the mix. The rest is iconic television.
Groucho is The King.
Daly's laughing is also hysterical. As Daly said, as soon as Groucho shows up, there goes control of the show.
OK MARCO this is TOMKES IM home waiting whether youre joing bulsht....or serious im SET READY TO Go. ATTACK give it your best shot. CLASSIC WHATS MY LINE one of the best episodes ever from this grandaddy of tv gameshows. If anyone out there ever has any questions regarding this series 1950-67 feel free to ask me as i knew the panalists &John Daly and did extensive research on the show. its an American classic. TOMKES tv film historian LOOK AT GROUCHO in his element here bringing the house down .
Thanks for your comments. I might take you up on your knowledge. I once did autograph shows. Did some who appeared on this show as mystery guests. Most from this era were classy.I miss it a lot. World is officially crazy now.
GROUCHO I have this on vhs on 500 episodes of this, the greatest panal show EVER. Claudette Colbert was a classy and dignified GROUCHO youre a riot. you brought the house down. they dont make em like these folks anymore. this tv film historian with his own website n old films&actors and who knew 900 performers since 1964 can tell you we need more like this . TV TODAY IS FILTH SEX VIOLENCE. no CLASS . This among the best of the 50s ckassics. what a show& what actors. Thanks. TOMK
Divine and delicious are absolutely appropriate for this star of two of the greatest classics of cinema, 'It Happened One Night' and 'Since You Went Away.' I seem to remember she did one of those What Becomes a Legend Most ads for Blackglama when it was considered luxurious to wear fur.
To quote Steve Allen, "oh dear..." I've never seen Mr. Daly laugh like this before- he completely lost it even before Ms. Colbert's entrance!! Groucho's antics got to him, and he was working on Miss Arlene thoughout this game. What a show this was.
Claudette does Russian because at the time of this live Broadcast in September 1959, Soviet Premier Nitika Kruschev was touring America. In fact the first contestant resembled the premier to a startling degree. "Are you a corrupt politician?" Groucho asks without missing a beat, "or is that redundant?" Hooray for Captain Marx.
two memorable shots ( 0:13 ) -- Groucho's empty seat and Daly nearly doubled over howling in laughter. Daly was not easily distracted, but Groucho can certainly hit you between the eyes.
Cool cookie that Claudette Colbert: she remains glamourous with all the comic shoes dropping around her.
Having Groucho Marx as a first-time panelist on "WHAT'S MY LINE?" (in September 1959) was like throwing a lighted match into a gasoline can; there was no way he was going to play the game "straight", and he knew it- and John Daly, Gil Fates and Mark Goodson knew it. They let him on, anyway. But he didn't return until 1962...

Groucho is truly an egomaniac and he ruined this episode for all and I really felt sorry for Claudette. Groucho has to be the center of attention in anything he does and yes I too heard him whisper her name as she was signing in, what a dissappointment for those who enjoy the show for what is as I do. Youd think they would learn to not have groucho on.
@xHeavyMetalPapillonx the sound in that studio wasn't very good when watching other clips you will see a panelist name the mystery guest yet not all panelist hear it and sit without taking their masks off.
omg johns laugh is making me laugh so hard it hurts!lol and lovess claudette legend my fave film is the one with legend paulette goddard and it happened one night with the one and only king of hollywood clark gable legends and stars xoxo catt
I love Groucho so much- every appearance, show, movie or whatever else that he was in, he was always nothing short of hilarious- I've never been disappointed by anything he did. (Well, except for "Skidoo", but that hardly counts.)
I think this clip demonstrates why comedians like Groucho Marx and Jack Benny were in a class all by themselves. Their humor was observational and came from their natural personality, making even the most simple things hilarious.
It is so hysterical to see urbane, suave John Daly double over in helpless gawfaws.
All hail Groucho -- an avid reader largely self-educated, witty, bright, funny! An inspiration to wise guys everywhere. I think in this sequence Groucho is a little much, but then live TV cannot be edited for pace.
Too bad Groucho did not get to use the line that AF quoted. That would have been even more funny.

I misspelled it: "Tallulah!"
mrspeel7 2 years ago
2:40 - Mr. Cerf: "Are you related to any Southern congressman?"
He must have thought it was Talullah Bankhead, who came from a political family.
Miss Colbert's disguised "DAAH" response must have reminded him of Ms. Bankhead's trademark, "DAHH-ling."
