  • Aren't they sitting a little bit too close? Anyway, great interview.

  • I want a Cleese-stache

  • Thank you for posting this interview. It's so refreshing to see an actual meaningful conversation between two people.

  • Is this 1080p? No. Does it have John Cleese in it? Yes. Therefore it is 1019181p.

  • @bewildebeest Preach it!

  • Does anyone know who the 'well-known actor' who offended the royals and didn't work for 6 years is..?

  • @henrah1981 The late Tom Bell I think.

  • I like the way Dick keeps a joke going.

  • @TeteromPRS He is not as bad as other commenters think. I like this interview better than the Michael Palin one, though.

  • nice this cracked me up

  • Dickie talks too much.

  • Bless you for having the sense to keep those Beta tapes and going to the trouble to upload this poor quality copy!

    :-)

  • Don't know why he said "owned the interview".Hate that phrase and its not appropriate with this interesting conversation.

  • bajino, it's not a competition. it's two men having a conversation, no one is owning the other. Cavett's style was to let guests talk, he did that with EVERY guest. If you want to see a competition interview go watch Bill O Reilly.

  • Some people seem to believe that people who disagree on issues should be angry with each other, some others seem to believe that every opinion matters equally when clearly this is not so. The point of debate isn't to win, there is no prize unless you yourself are lucky enough to be convinced of something which you did not accept before; this is called "losing" the debate yet it is the loser who gains. Cavett reminds me of Parkinson, great interviewer.

  • John Cleese is a very intelligent man.

  • He absolutely owned this interview. cool to watch

  • @TheTerrorUforgot ,so is dick cavett, hes got to do the background work and know a lot about his guests, which he does ,i,m english and have just started buying his dvd's,hes a top bloke! always enjoy watching his interviews!!!

  • @craggymozzer You beat me to it, he hit the nail on the head with that "most people are only offended because they were told they were going to be" remark.

I'm English too, and think he's miles better than Parkinson or anyone else for that matter.

  • @TheTerrorUforgot That's Cambridge for you.

  • I really like this Dick Cavett character, hes kind of like Bill Mahers father

  • I doubt it. Bill Maher tries to offend as much as possible for his own publicity. Dick Cavett is a class act.

  • Lmao, I'm not familiar with Dick Cavett.

I mean only in a vague Deja Vu type way lol. As in, I sort of feel I've heard the name and seen him before as I assume he's somewhat... Or was somewhat of a staple interview back then.

But I'm only 19 plus it was US TV so... No chance lol.

But I like him. Seems like interviews and interviewers back then were less watered down. Things have slowly gotten less and less pure and more and more condensed, chopped up and simplified. Seemed richer then.

  • Lmao it is hilarious too the point John makes about achieving something so counter-productive. It's so true.

They're too stupid to realize the power of the freedom of speech and the amount of free-minded people on this planet or... In power will always beat fashism and asshole trying to tell people what to do.

It's like when people protested The Marshall Mathers LP and made it the fastest selling hip-hop album in history lmao. They make it worse.

  • 30 years on, Ricky Gervais has a similar problem to John Cleese with the funny walks - people always want him to 'do the dance'.

I think it's qite funny, but I'm sure it isn't so funny when you hear it every day.

  • Yeah I think Gervais escaped that though.

The problem is John has that because he didn't do another show after Fawlty Towers so that will be the last thing in people's minds that they remember him for.

Where as Gervais very quickly followed up with Extras which is almost sort of competing against The Office in legacy now.

And he keeps doing more and more, The Invention of Lying, Cemetry Junction.

So as long as he keeps moving... I think people forget quickly.

  • yeah this really isn't that bad for quality. thanks for this.

  • at least its not a vhs rip, there were things worse than beta. thanks for the upload

  • Cute sequey
