hey great video, rele clear and precise. glad wheatgrass help you, that is good news. Im trying to grown some right now and finding out all the pros and cons, rite and wrong way of doing fings. if you have any good tips for a beginer please message me. x
are the wheat grass seeds online the same thing as these "wheat berries"? I found a small packet of wheatgrass seeds at my local health food store, but it is expensive considering how much you are getting. Can the wheat berries be grown?
@losone85 I understand. Sometimes people say something because other people say it. I try things myself : ) I have not got mould using a tray without holes. One final thing, some people get mould whatever tray they use. I say try the tray without holes and take your chances, your clean worktop will thank you for it!
Has anyone had any problems with fruit fly? or how to get rid of them? They seem to love wheatgrass too, and I've had an infestation of them since starting to grow it.
@Azurju Fruit flies will mostly be in your home because you have fruit that is over ripe, then they will be attracted to wheatgrass as well. So, first step, get rid of that fruit or keep it in the fridge. With the wg itself, a net of some kind is the only thing that will work for protection but it won't get rid of the fruit flies it will just stop them getting at the grass.
Thanks Karen, I have thought this before and in one of my many attempts to try and get rid of them have not left out any foods in my apartment.
They are however definitely attracted to the wheatgrass. I think they live and lay their eggs in the dirt and eat the rotting seeds that don't germinate. When I remove a tray huge swarms of them come out.
just wondering where you buy your wheat seeds from. i'm finding it hard to find a good seed. i find some seeds are great and grow very well and easy and some are poor and i have a real mold problem with. i'm finding it hard to find a good seed supplier so was just wondering where you get your sends from. also have you found any soils that for you work best.
One of the major benefits of wheatgrass is that it includes living chlorophyll, the first product of light. Science has substantiated studies that prove chlorophyll stops the growth and development of what is considered "bad bacteria." It also has the ability to rebuild and replenish the bloodstream, and tests have shown that in animals that were tested, the red cell count returned to normal within four to five days even for those known to be severely anemic.

After harvesting it for the first time, can it grow again into a full grown wheat so that i can get the seeds? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge to us.
I have never tried, but honestly grain is so low cost and abundant that when you weigh it all up it's much easier, faster etc to simply replant with fresh grains.
Although I agree that growing greens in trays is better than not growing it at all, I wonder if it would not be better to grow it outside if you have a garden? What do you think?
Karen, I enjoy watching and learning from all of your vidios. Very informative. The fact that you are drop dead BEAUTIFUL in just a bonus! Take care, and keep the vids coming!!!
thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience here. i wasnt sure if wheat seeds or berries meant wheat grain. but now i see that's what it is i have planted my first batch.
hi karen..thank you for the video. .my hemoglobin levels are very low...so someone suggested me to drink wheatgrass juice as it might help...so i started growing the grass...i have a question....as this is the first time i am trying....how much quantity of juice i can take daily......and do u think the wheatgrass powder would also be effective as grass.....pls reply...thank you...
It's grown hydroponically and while it looks very pretty (!) it's not as nutritious as soil-grown grass draws nutrition from the soil. Hope this helps!
Hi Karen, thanks for the demonstration on your sprouting videos, are sprouts the best source for energy and weight control? I find it very difficult to keep weight on 100% raw and was considering dropping down to include complex carbs. if you get a chance to reply thanks in advance
thanks! hey do you think eating the wheatgrass will give you more nutrition that just drinking the juice? im not saying i would eat it but what do you think?! haha!
i have a question.. i constantly see people growing wheatgrass without soil! they usually have it just growing in glass conatainers.. do u know how to grow wheatgrass like this?
mmmm, vegans look very good :) Sorry, i apologize... Good information , i cannot wait to try this for myself. I just recently tried the 100% vegan and i can't describe how much i'm hooked to it. Thanks :P
don't think you need to apologize; along with the accent too -- have mercy :). but yea, good information too. i'm not going full-vegan, but try to eat more raw
I've grown wheat grass with no soil, and no pre-sprouting, using my timed sprouter (click on my userid to get to my video of how I built it). I just put in the wheat berries, and come back 7 days later to 5-inch tall wheat grass. I use a manual juicer, and it works great.
A friend and I both tried growing wheat grass (separately) a few years ago, and one day he called me (this was in August, summer) to say that he'd seen a naturopath about how he was always shivering, even out in the hot sun. The doc. suggested he stop consuming wheatgrass and other grasses as it was changing his metabolism, which caused him to be cold all the time. Well, shortly thereafter I stopped consuming it as well. Now I stick to sprouting only.
Thanks to this & one other video I am starting my 1st grow tonight. Can anyone advise me how long wheatgrass seeds last? I want to buy a large 10 pound bag but it is just myself using it to juice. The wife is a juice snob....says it tickles her nose too much. My cats (Lucy & Ethel) sure love it though! Thanks,
wheatgrass seeds should last about 1/2-2 years if sealed airtight and kept away from sunlight and moisture. i keep mine in a sealed mason jar with the solid metal lids you can get the canning/hardware store.
Thanks Karen, I thought getting an expensive automatic system like easygreen was the only way to grow wheatgrass well. I will definately be using all your tips!! I'm subscribing right now!!!!
Hulled can be very hit or miss so not generally recommended. Some don't work at all, others a little - you can try it and find out! Re your last question: exactly. I generally only use ones without holes and have never had a problem.
this is wonderful thank you for making this presentation. How much wheat grass juice is one portion and how much wheat grass is required to make a portion?
2-4oz generally is considered "one portion" and how much grass you need to make that depends on how thick the grass grows in your tray. Approx though, you're looking at around 1/4-1/3 of a standard seedling tray.
Thanks for the vid, having been to HHI fl, and TOL AZ, with their wonderful climates how do you find growing this stuff in this climate this time of year, do you use lights or heat etc? tks Derek irl
I'm sorry I can't help you with this one. I'm not sure that guinea pigs can digest it either so would consult a book on it if I were you. You can use any soil but you want it to be good and healthy, of course.
How much juice should these be yielding? I'm using cat litter trays, and I'm only getting about 6 oz. of juice per tray. Does this sound right to you? Thanks!
Great video! I just started growing my first tray of wheatgrass. It's been covered up for two days, and when I took a look at it this morning, I noticed a lot of what appears to be mold growing. Will the grass still grow o.k. or should I start all over again? Thanks Karen.
This is quite common, depends how bad it is. Perhaps it was air temperature related, hard to say as I have only ever had a tiny bit of mold and rarely at that. Let it grow. You'll be using the grass not the mold ; )
Hello. I just joined YouTube and was watching this video, Wheatgrass and Indoor Greens, when I decided to go back and watch your video on sprouting first; when I came back to this video it was "no longer available." I have tried over and over. . . is there any way to access the video? Thank you! I've found your other available videos very informative and I'm excited to try a few of your ideas/recipes. Thanks again!
I LOVE wheatgrass! I buy mine in a powder form for easy use hehe. I get it from iherb. com for 60% less then anywhere else! hehe if you shop there type in ZAR957 at checkout and you get $5 off :-)
Aconbury sprout compost is briliant isnt it. I use the trays with holes but stand them in a bigger tray with no holes, and a few pebbles. so they can breathe, drain, but no mess. works well... x
You do your demonstration with the "cat litter" box that doesn't have any holes at the bottom, but your wheat grass that is already sprouted by the window has been done in boxes that have holes at the bottom. Can you in fact sprout wheat grass with the cat litter boxes (or any box that doesn't have holes at the bottom) or did you just use it for demonstrative purposes?
Thanks for your time. I look forward to growing my own. :)
You say that you shouldn't eat the wheat grass, but rather juice it. Why couldn't you eat it, chewing the grass very well until it is practically a liquid?
Is there a negative affect to eating the grass rather than juicing it?
Grass doesn't break down in this way. You would get liquid from chewing it and this is healthful and great for your oral health, but the fibre itself is not digestable in the human system. If you eat it you could run into problems - not recommended.
You *can* get another crop but it is never anywhere like as strong or potent as the first so I personally recommend to compost the first and start again with a fresh tray.
Thanks Karen. After you have cut the grass for juicing do you compost the ramainder or could you get another crop? I thought possibly the compost might have enough vitamins and minerals to get a little more? I have ordered supplies to do this on my own and will start shortly.
Hi Karen, I couldn't work out why my wheatgrass kept dying. Now I think I know. It took me hours to come across this vid. I searched 'how to grow wheatgrass' and found this through another one.
Have a great day and thank you for the time you took to record and post. xoxoxo
Your'e a FAB teacher Karen, down to earth and explain all the specific details that may be questions later if not addressed.I experience that you have a respectful attitude towards your audience. Thanks for posting this its really helpful.
This is SO funny! I have 2 female cats (don't anyone tell my wife she did NOT give birth to them either...). The cats (Lucy & Ethel) are 20+ pounds each and if there is wheatgrass within the borders of our home, the battle is ON! I always give them a "pinch" then run like Hell.
Thanks again Karen. You're very at easy in front of the camera showing everyone in an "easy fashion" "How-to" in the RAW world. We need many teachers to get as many people involved so that we will see many RAW places to eat out as well as buy our foods if we can't or don't have the time to grow them at home. Either way the movement is on the rise and you're a great teacher!
Hi Karen. I love your e-zine and the videos - very inspirational. Some info for you from a gardening perspective ... the trays with the drainage holes are usually used inside trays without holes. If you have a compatible set of trays, the upper tray is supported by it's rim, leaving a gap between the bases of the trays. This means your plants won't get waterlogged but also that your surfaces stay clean :-)
Karen, I have attempted unsuccessfully to purchase wheatgrass in the u.k encountering bogus websites and other problems. Can you recommend a genuine supplier who delivers promptly? Thank you for all the videos you've made. Your doing a great job.

can we use a blender instead of juicer? The other thing; can we reuse the organic compose?

@tealeh2 No, grass needs to be juiced. A blender will just spin the grass round and round and you won't break it down or get juice out of it.

I'd like clarification on something please.

You can do either... if you watch again I think I do share why that is and what you need to be mindful of.

Hello.
Great video. Thank you very much for posting it.
You say that you shouldn't eat the wheat grass, but rather juice it. Why couldn't you eat it, chewing the grass very well until it is practically a liquid?
Is there a negative affect to eating the grass rather than juicing it?
Thanks again.
8791nahtanoj 3 years ago
Grass doesn't break down in this way. You would get liquid from chewing it and this is healthful and great for your oral health, but the fibre itself is not digestable in the human system. If you eat it you could run into problems - not recommended.

You *can* get another crop but it is never anywhere like as strong or potent as the first so I personally recommend to compost the first and start again with a fresh tray.
karenknowler 3 years ago
Thanks Karen. After you have cut the grass for juicing do you compost the ramainder or could you get another crop? I thought possibly the compost might have enough vitamins and minerals to get a little more? I have ordered supplies to do this on my own and will start shortly.

Karen, Thank you so much for making this video! My grass is starting to get mold. Is ok to still juice it?
RawRainbow 3 years ago
I'm guessing the mold is low down? If this is the case just juice the top mold-free part.
karenknowler 3 years ago
The mold is just on the seeds/berries. Some of it is white and some of it is green.

Hi Karen, I couldn't work out why my wheatgrass kept dying. Now I think I know. It took me hours to come across this vid. I searched 'how to grow wheatgrass' and found this through another one.
Have a great day and thank you for the time you took to record and post. xoxoxo

how long had the wheat been sprouting
before you put it on the dirt?

2-3 days
karenknowler 3 years ago
thanks, what do you use to grow pea greens
and do you soak those and the sunflower
seed sovernight like the wheat?
ripshaw1 3 years ago
Pea greens are grown from peas, snow peas. The other greens are grown in exactly the same way as the wheatgrass.

Now I really want to try this, except my cats may be competing for it. . . how do you stop that from happening?
Mooncelt 3 years ago
Put the trays in a room they are not allowed to go!
karenknowler 3 years ago

Have wonderful day green lady!

is wheat grass healthier than barley grass?
piscopokiki 3 years ago
They have different properties, I don't think you can class one as "healthier", like apples and oranges... it's about what your body needs.
karenknowler 3 years ago
Righto!! Thanks :)

Great tip - thanks I will pass it on!

For sunflower greens, do you use the hulled or unhulled sunflower seeds?
