The most successful COIN operations have involved massacres by the conventional forces. The US Indian Wars, the Boer Wars, and the phillipine insurrection have all involved atrocities by the dominant forces. The only way to win hearts and minds is to remove them from the enemy.
The truth is Nobody will ever know the reason, just those who took it to their graves know. Cospiracy theorists such as yourself also don't know the real reason. But I know it was not with honerable intentions.
2) Again at LZ X-Ray, if the doctrine said that it was vital to seize high ground, as they state here, then why did they insert into X-Ray which was a clearing on low ground overlooked by high ground?
3) At LZ Albany they didn't even have a mission or any helo lift. They walked into a trap completely unawares and unsupported.
By the time you get to the 11th Cav Backhorse operations in 1969-1971 the kinks are worked out and airmobile works extremely well.
The airmobile concept was sound but at this time was very poorly understood by higher command and really implemented very poorly. at the operational level.
Examples:
1) At LZ X-Ray in Ia Drang, the 1/7 Cav was entirely dependent on an inadequate number of helos for lift, with an LZ that would only take 4 at a time. The medevac pilots would not fly into the hot LZ. (cont...)
Outstanding video...Air Cav kicks VC butt! What chance did a 90lb. riceburner in black pajamas have against such firepower? Ultimate victory in Vietnam was stolen by the media who did more for the communist cause than any action by the NVA or VC ever could.
