Che bella canzone e che bellissima voce! This is,without any doubt, one of the most beautiful and touching 'Canzone napolitana's ever written. The words and music go directly to 'il core'. Bravo Signore Cardillo(composer) and bravissimo Pippo. Riposa in pace Maestro.
I wish he'd stopped singing this song after he made this. I's near perfection...and most of his efforts in his later years disappoint. particularly the shouting finish...
A number of tenors with lyric voices suffered a deterioration of that great tone: DiStefano and Carreras. No one could really predict: they loved to sing as much as we love to hear them, and it's only by their exalted standards that we noticed the decline. DiStefano is near the end here, and he's still extraordinary: if his voice faded, his heart never did, and I never ti re of listening to anything he sang. After Caruso, it's DiStefano for me.
Distefano's problem was a lung disease, Sarcoidosis. My sister has it and most of the time she can barely breathe. If anything this recording shows how good he was despite his illness:)
With all the advisers DiStefano surely had why would a man with such a magnificent voice--certainly the most beautiful male voice at one point-decide he needed to push beyond his natural sound just to realize that he was breaking his voice down, virtually ruining it? Someone must have made an effort to get him to stop pushing his voice since there was nothing to gain by such extreme straining and ultimately changing it forever! Does anyone know who tried to help him understand?
@PihaSandDunes right you are. almost every good tenor can sing at full voice but the pianissimo is amazing. Grande Pippo. the most "natural" male voice ever.
Regretfully, you gotta die and go to Heaven before you'll hear this again. I hear tell that one can stand just beyond the Pearly Gates and this incredible voice will come rolling down from way above.

At 1:06 what do you want to express?
Try to talk with your psychiatrist, maybe he can help you.

Am blissfully fading into the evening listening to this great man who captivated me back in the 50's and who I have discovered again. Graham Melb Aus

The term "golden voice" was coined for DiStefano. This is heart breaking: his passion and beauty of voice were overwhelming.

THIS ETERNAL SONG WAS WRITEN FOR CARUSO, BUT IT BELONGS TO PIPPO FOR EVER..
HIS SPETACULAR PIANISSIMO IS NOT NOLY HEARTBREAKING, BUT ALSO CAUSES SO MANY MUSICAL ORGASM TO ANY ONE WHO REALLY APPRECIATE HIS ART.

you don't need a mighty force to shatter one's heart.
you just need the pianissimo of di stefano.

His pianissimo is heartbreaking. One of the most spiritual of singers, and so beautiful of voice.

Well. I've always thought Di Stefano was the most beautiful voice in history. Show me a better and i'll be grateful.

Oh i agree completely, in fact the version that i consider better is also by Di Stefano, from his radio concert in Mexico.
The voice is a lot fresher and he sings it with such unbelievable passion...

Enrico Caruso

@Vendimi3 Its difficult to say who is the best singer ever. But is sure he has to be named in one breath with Caruso, Pavarotti and Domingo.

this is definitely not the BEST version
