what made that scene so powerful (to those familiar with the series) was it was the first time you ever saw the dad (Micheal Gross) angry. when he told tom hanks "or get the hell out of my house.." , that was more shocking than Ned smacking Alex!

Nowadays this episode would've been pulled because they used the word "hell".

This is one of the few times a sitcom dealt with serious stuff without jumping the shark.
