  • Obviously the brakes overpower the engine in a camry because the camry has a 5 horsepower engine lol

  • Ha notice how he does the test on a Toyota.

  • i like how he makes people feel stupid, in a very subtle way if this ever happened to them lol

  • ok, if i my camry suddenly accelerated i'd be in so much panic that i wouldnt even THINK to put the car in Neutral

  • @thecarexpert18

u'd b in so much [anic that u wont think of neutral, u wont think of pressing the brakes, or doing any action that would stop ur death... how did u pass ur driving test u fucking idiot

  • @thecarexpert18 panicking over the thought of the motor blowing itself up?

  • @Nomolos2010 modern cars have rev limiters, the engine would never blow, and even id it did blow, so what?

  • This was a great video.... now will they please fix the bloody things before they roll off the assembly line?

  • @Nomolos2010 And I completely understand that people are just supposed to expect their brand new cars to suddenly and "unexpectedly" accellerate, we're also supposed to expect brake failures, and exhaust leaks into the cabin from NEW vehicles too.... NOT!

  • @Nomolos2010

There was no evidence, the black boxes in Toyotas showed that it was driver error, where the Fords when they had the recalls in the 90's the treadlines between the tires were too big and caused over a hundred accidents and 8 million recalls..

this wasn't as heavily publicised as Toyota... because it was American.. but it was the fault of Ford.. or bridgestone... but ford for not having quality checks

  • @quilmesfiesta firestone for not having quality checks, not Ford

  • @buyAmerican92 Ford did and does have it's share of issues as well as the rest of'em. The TSB's are long on most vehicles lol.

  • @Nomolos2010 I understand that every company has their faults, im simply correcting a statement someone made about Toyota currently outselling Ford.... which is false.

  • @quilmesfiesta All I have to say is I wouldn't buy ANY new hunk of junk if they paid me.

  • @Nomolos2010

Yea me 2, totally agree on that!!! and the new ones seem to be really soft on the outside as well, theyre like plastic

  • @quilmesfiesta lol, there's more plastic in'em than most people realize.

I'm actually grateful that they put more and more plastic in OP's cars, that way if they ever smack into mine, it won't hurt my vehicle all that much lol.

  • Thank you for issuing the PSA for common sense... *sigh*

  • I guess he didn't see the testimony of the lady who stated that whatever gear she put it in the engine kept revving and going! Now show us how to stop a runaway engine with the brakes not working.

  • Toyotas slogan finally fits them! Moving Forward: Even if you dont want too! lol. American cars overs Jap cars anyday of the week.

  • @buyAmerican92

yea ... lol that is why Toyota is the number 1 car in America... and has ended GM's 77 year reign, although ur fuckin government is spanking ur fat arses to pay for protecting G.M and bailing their arses out of the recession.

good old pick up truck yeeeeeeha

    fucking douches

  • @quilmesfiesta Check again, both GM and Ford have been outselling Toyota all year. And nobody makes a pickup better than Ford as proven for the last 33 years runnning.

  • @buyAmerican92

I have checked... Toyota beat GM by 2008 although GM is backed by the government and they've been bailed out and Toyota has had the recalls of 8 mill vehicles... they still come out on top..

and in regards to the unintended acceleration.. NHTSA of USA has said that the culprit isn't the gas pedal.. but a driver error.. and if u go to the website on this vid.. popular mechanic search for unintended acceleration u'll find an article explaining that Toyota is not at fault.. :D

  • @quilmesfiesta Oh im sure, that must be why the U.S. government has fined Toyota tens of millions of dollars just recently for failing to handle the recalls properly. If the unintended acceleration was human error, why were the cars sent back to dealers for repair? And just to let you know, G.M. has since paid back the bailout money and reentered the trade market. :D but im a Ford guy anyway

  • @buyAmerican92

They were sent back because of the Lousy CTS (American Manufactured) pedals had to be changed, where in Japan u get Denso Manufactured pedals which were not subject to any recalls...

the NHTSA have produced a report saying that the pedals were not the culprit, but it was human error.. read it, it is also on popular mechanic...

    regards

  • @buyAmerican92

google it because I can't post links on here.. like u I wanna also get to the bottom of this issue

  • @quilmesfiesta i dont need to google it i already know my info. BTW it has been posted today that Ford retakes its status as the #2 automaker in North America from Toyota. Toyota was the only major auto company to lose sales in December as rivals such as Ford and GM both posted significant increases.

  • This just goes to show:

The majority of American drivers posses bare minimum driving skills.

The old people are confused and suck at driving/thinking.

While the US teens are not taught how to CONTROL a vehicle, just how to use a steering wheel and pedals for mundane driving.

I am constantly ashamed of our driving skills as a nation. And this common-sense based video proves how sub par we are as a nation. The options being discussed are so BASIC, its pathetic people are learning from this.

  • But thank you for posting this video, because we don't need any more pointless accidents from old or slow people who can't think on their feet... (that does not apply to unique situations where people were in an environment that did not allow for a safe neutral-stop, or brake overpower stop)

But there are plenty of examples where it was driver-avoidable; but should have been avoided in the first place by Toyota not selling cheap, cost effective, faulty products!!!!!!!

  • if you want to fix that toyota replace it with a new chevy the gas pedal does NOT stick in those

  • shift to neutral... its that simple people

  • @leotllz If the computer is willing to accept that signal.

I have heard and seen a car move with the lever in P, although the throttle was STILL in idle position so no big damage.

Dealership managed to reproduce the fault as well.

I suspect they went cheepo with software correction of memory errors in the ECU, which is NOT a good way of doing things.

Buy the more expensive chips with HARDWARE Error Correction Code, that solves the problem, but costs over 50% more than regular non ECC.

  • push that piece o shit 4 cylinder

  • haha theres a toyota ad before the video starts haha

  • or better don't buy a toyota GENIUS.....

  • so......basically....you apply the brakes......brilliant. I would have never thought of that.

  • i think it was funnier how he was shwoing to throw it in neutral and as he put it back in drive...the delay until it grabbed was oddly long and even he said "oh mercy" lmao

  • Just because the throttle sticks doesnt mean you cant stop the car. people panic and want to blame it on someone else. People, take some responsibility for your selves!

  • so then why did Mrs. Rhonda Smith say she put it in neutral and it didnt change anything, and the brakes did nothing, not that they wouldnt overpower the acceleration, but that they did nothing at all?

  • ms rhonda smith is a dumb bitch, she shouldve just put it in neutral and then press the brakes and if the brakes dont work use the EMERGENCY brake..theres a reason its called that. People just want to screw toyota because they sell more than american cars. Everyone is dying to sue. A SHAME after japanese investors and american people bailed out GMC, just to bite the hand that feed them. And i hate these patriotic bastards that say "i never buy a jap car". Get real racists cunts.

  • ok, now lets see it in a real life situation, get up to the 75-80 the cars were doing, then they got stuck, which in almost all incedents, the cars were over 95-100mph before the driver reacted, now, the brakes WILL NOT over power the motor at that speed with that momentum, what they will do when they get hot, which happens quick, is you lose the brakes, the pads stop being effective. then what? swerve at 100mph, your gonna flip.

  • no dumb fuck, once youre going 95-100 you stick the damn car into neutral AND BAM no acceleration. That dumb fuck that let his prius go up to a 100mph knew that, but he wanted to sue toyota thats why he didn't do it.

  • shut up game fag. unlike you, im actually a mechanic, unlike you, i actually have intelligence. if you put that car in neutral, at 100mph, it will lift, and like i said, most people panic. especially when they dont know what to do, reaction time at 100 is nonexistant. one false slip, jerk on the wheel at that speed, game over. learn some manners before speaking.

  • Too bad the situation isn't this simple in the affected Toyotas. Deaths don't result from simple answers.

Toyota likes minimizing the serious issues in its vehicles, though, as you know. Check out the 3,000+ Toyota owners online petition. Toyota blames US for the sludging! Simple, very simple...but TOTALLY untrue!!

  • @WTFGUY956

Your logic seems right because Toyota is recalling millions along with other import brands and GM had a recall but that was because of a Toyota supplier too so I guess what youre trying to say is IMPORTS SUCK! Go to Japan if you dont like out cars.

  • or switch the engie off.

  • Since it's an automatic, doesn't the gearbox shift into neutral when the brake is applies?

  • Automatic transmissions do not drop into neutral when the brake is applied. The whole point of an automatic transmission is that it never has to disengage the engine from the wheels. It accomplishes this by switching into fluid drive while at very low speeds to allow the car to stop while the engine continues to try to push the car forward through the fluid coupling (kind of like a propeller trying to drive a boat that's tied to a dock).

  • @leafyism

Good question. That's partly true. The torque converter in the transmission is still engaged until the engine gets below a certain RPM. In most production cars, that RPM is around 900-1000 RPM. When the torque converter disengaged, it is like the vehicle is in neutral.

  • Lol

    No

  • They should have done a neutral drop at open throttle XD

  • lol @ 1:24 engine sounds like a blender

  • Now bring the car up to 75mph have the pads and rotars heated up and then lets see what happens. One problem might be the ABS kicking in when swerving to dodge other vehicles on the highway witch could casue a vehicle not to slow down right away. So many factors they don't show in a controlled test.

  • Instead of burning up the brakes/transmission why not just turn the key off? I have yet to see anyone recommend this as a solution, but it seems obvious to me. And before someone starts flaming: yes, I know the power steering would go, but at anything over 10 mph you can still steer a car w/o power steering.

  • @Theriomalstrom also the car will lose brakeing; cars now adays use power brakeing wich relies on engin vacume power to move a diagphram inside of the boster to aplie braking to the master cylender and weels. once you turn the engin off the vaccume to this boster pump is cut off and after about 2 presses of the brake peddle you will loose about 95% of braking power . if you dont belive me go find a small hill and put your car on this without the engin running and put it in nutral and try to stop

  • I understand that the brake booster would cease to operate, but how many presses of the brake pedal does it take to stop? One, last time I checked - leaving one more to spare.

  • These are simple methods without potentially damaging your car. you go ahead and try driving and taking the key out of the ignition while on full throttle, see how that works out for you. and from your page i noticed you watch a lot of the recall videos, so you must not know a lot about your car, meaning that you are either a girl or a very pathetic guy.

  • Have you ever turned the ignition off while driving? I have, and it's no sweat.

Go try it before you tell me it won't work.

  • @theriomalstrom yes tuning the key off works but it is saffer to just drop the tranny to nuetral and let the engine rev so you still have power brakes antilock/stability control and also power stering

  • so your an idiot for actually doing it? And you make it sound like you do it just for the fun of it. and when you take the key out of the ignition on toyotas, you don't just lose steering, but the wheel locks in place. Most car manufacturers have that now. And if you take the key out of the ignition repetitively, you'll start to find bits of your engine coming out of your exhaust pipe due to sudden decompression.

  • It won't work on cars with keyless start..if you push the start stop button nothing will happen unless the car is moving at less than 2 mph

  • @delzottoj1 I have to agree - One key point is that people are too fucking stupid and eager to sue, so they will use any excuse to do so. I'm not defending Toyota, they've handled things poorly, but they shouldn't have to croak over this. I drive a Dodge Charger, does that make me hate Toyota's? No. People need to get a brain and learn how to drive their cars before relying on them to save their life. There's a certain amount of respect between the two that's been lost in recent years.

  • Toyota what a joke!!! you shouldnt have to worry about this people!! buy american....CHEVY 4 LIFE

  • American cars SUCK.

  • your a piece of work go support the japs a little bit more please so this economy cam get better by supporting other COUNTRIES asshole!!!

  • @beezee522, I support the U.S 100%, but the cars here are SHIT when compared to foreign car. Don't deny it.

  • please I don't know what your smoking man. I will deny that till the day I die.. I will NEVER own a jap car or drive one for that matter. My grandpa had a old chevy van with a 350 the most reliable motor ever made with damn near a million miles on it . all these japs know how to make is 4 bangers that cost you your first born to fix

  • i agree with this guy however he is not testing it at normal freeway speeds (IE) 65-70 mph, and when your car takes off from that position your up in the 90's and might even break 100mph. So at those speeds the breaks wont have their "authority" that he is talking about.

  • I knew that guy in CA was a joke.

He either got caught speeding or he is trying to jump on the money wagon.

Just like the woman that wrecked her car. It always has to be sombody's fault. It looks like Toyota is up.

  • ya a few weeks ago my gf pissed me off n so i actually tried jumping out then she sped up n ran my foot over

  • ill tell you how to avoid your car accelerating to where you cant control it, don't but a damn toyota. lol

  • just jump out of the car. i do it all the time when my girlfriend pisses me off.

  • I shouldn't have to worry that i may have to do this in the first place, maybe they shoudn't have fucked up this bad in the first place

  • @mitchellhdz, That is true..but in an event of this happening..WHO CARES what happens to the engine if you put it in neutral..as long as you can stop the car safely and call for help.....your life is more important than the engine..

  • your life is worth more than the engine. Redlining for a limited amount of time doesnt hurt the engine. Theres a rev limiter on the engine for a reason. Neutral shift is the best way to stop the car since removes power to the wheels

  • isnt that better than killing somebody on the road or killing yourself? it's just a car, it can be replaced

  • I can't believe people have to be explained to how to do this. lol I have to agree with Jermey Clarckson on this "people that do not care about cars should not be allowed to drive them". That summed up a segment on Top Gear. Basic idea was that if people do not care about something, they are bad at it. Driving is the same. So, you do not learn how to do things in emergancies. Where as people like myself take it very serious on the street and track. Passion makes you better.

  • Here's some add'l info for those who found this video in any way informative:

    - The key turns the vehicle off as well as on.

    - Gasoline is for gasoline engines, diesel fuel is only for diesel engines.

    - Slower traffic keeps to the right.

    - Headlights make it possible to see better at night.

    - Jesus may be your copilot, but you're the one with the license.

    - Unless it's the one driving, no one cares that a baby is on board.

    - And of course, Palin 2012.

  • @rugbynimbus hahahaha

  • I dont get why this is such a big deal. Its a fucking witch hunt going on against Toyota.

  • I understand that the problem is that some Toyota and Honda models have shift lockouts that prevent you from shifting into Neutral while driving. The inertia from the car moving and warm disk brakes over ride the brakes quickly making them useless.

If all cars can go into Neutral than yes, this is a Darwinian issue.

  • If you do not know how to properly operate a vehicle, then you deserve whatever is coming to you. You should learn how a car works before you ever begin to drive.

Basic fundamentals on how to drive and how a car works can be taught in a few hours, there should be a required class that describes exactly what to do, how cars work, and how to counter certain scenarios to be required before you obtain a permit/license.

  • @rxvexe F**k yes!!!

  • @rxvexe, ive been saying the same thing for a while now. I tell everybody that you should know how a car especially a New one works and how it operates because of one things like this and In case you break down on the road. Aka and flat tire or something as basic as a battery going dead from a faulty alternator. Knowing how to jump start a car and others that should be taught before getting behind a wheel of a car. some people dont even know those few simple things. And it boggles my mind.

  • Do we really need a video for this? People are idiots wow... The cop in the lexus was retarded, dude made 300 phone calls before thinking about any of these solutions.

  • With all due respect, you're not hitting the mark here. Brakes can quickly overheat and become basically useless in a stuck throttle situation. You should be instructing people to put it into neutral first BEFORE applying the brakes. The engine will rev wide open. Let the engine bounce on the rev limiter- it isn't going to harm anything. That's what a rev limiter does. It keeps the engine from eating itself. I know- I build engines for a living. Brakes can quickly go away when they overheat.

  • People can be stampeded like cattle in this country, what happened to the BIRD/PIG Flu? Y2K? all the worsening hurricanes were supposed to be bracing for each year after Katrina. This is yet another set up by the government, which has sunk 10s of billions of dollars into GM and Chrysler.

  • im getting a ford next. just in case....fishy stuff.

  • Did you position the gear in nuetral?

  • "that's all you have to do" - yeah, but we're talking about dumb ass Americans who would rather let the car accelerate to over 100mph and then USE THEIR CELL PHONE rather than do something smart like kick it into neutral or turn the key off.

  • this was the govenments way to kill off idiots thanz now we will have to up with another plan.....like national healthcare

  • showing idiot americans to how to drive a car without thinking.

If you think less than a second you should find out puting car to neutral will solve the problem.

  • @Lagdoo yeah but if the throttle is stuck than its gonna redline till it blows, better off fully applying the brakes providing they work correctly

  • better to redline until it blows than go 120mph and crash

  • lol cmon now, we all know that the camry cant top 80 =P

  • why not just hit the eject button?

  • whatever guys. toyota is selling for 120 a month. that deal is GREAT and the chances of unexpected acceleration are nearly the same for getting struck by lightning. think about how many millions of toyotas are on the road-take a look around. cell phone texting use is a bigger danger

  • it is a real problem, but seriously, the first thing to pop into someones head is to slam the breaks or neutral the fucker. im guessing all the accidents that have occurred because of this issue were by women drivers :P

  • @junitono1 spell check

  • You are an expert making yourself a BIG IDIOT. It is like an American driver making themselves idiot riding an asian car thinking it was not perfect. Dont buy if you dont like it. There is no perfect car and no perfect driver.

  • Do you even own a 2010 Toyota? It is completely horrible. I have to say it isn't safe at all due to sudden acceleration. He was just trying to help. Toyota's slogan "Moving Forward" even if you don't want it to.

  • actually despite domestic fanboy attempts to cloud the issue here the problem is still VERY rare and has only happened a handful of times.

oh and FORD AND GM are both in the same boat as they have had the same issue with their cars but have not copped to it yet. stay tuned though.

  • yeah, you can't just stop on freeway @ 70 mph...

    carefuul behind you

  • He's a dipshit, several testified it would not shift and the brakes didn't help. I can't imagine every single person this happened to is that much of an idiot NOT to know this. Or wait, If they were Liberals then I would understand why they probably sat their screaming instead of shifting and braking.

  • moron, these cars DO NOT have enough engine power to overcome their brakes. shit, I had a camry and tried to do a powerslide with it with full brake and full throttle and it would not budge...so what are you saying dipshit, that suddendly the car gets SUPER POWERS and can overcome its own brakes? yeah sorry. the car I have no easily will, but not my camry. get off the failboat domestic fanboy.

  • I doubt that. Shifting has nothing to do with acceleration, so it would be almost impossible for something to go wrong with the gears and the acceleration at the same exact time. That's the consumers way of saying "Hey, give me more money."

  • to back up anythung22's response, car's with CVT don't have shifting - just acceleration.

  • Total no-brainer.

  • yeah, but most ppl are idiots. thats why everyone gets cars with an automatic tranny, power locks, power windows, etc, etc. most are too lazy and too stupid to even know how to drive a car anymore? neutral? i doubt most ppl driving a car today even know what that means.

  • sadly, you are right. I learnt how to drive in a 70s land rover which we often tear apart and restart (if lucky)...but that was fun. Now, computers have changed everything when u open the bonnet and don't know where to begin unscrewing

  • exactly, how simple is that, its no big deal put the fuckin gear in the neutral even its got automatic

i hate ignorants who talk shit about toyota

i wounder how many ppl are getting killed in accident by the insufficient safty features equiped on chrysler dodge and jeep every year thats what i want to investigate

  • While flaws in the car may well exist (and if they do, are a serious issue), simple issue such as these should be within the scope of what a person can be expect to deal with.

How does one stop going forward? Brakes and/or neutral. That's a reasonable fraction of drivers' ed.

Lastly, there is a possibility that cell phones are actually interfering with the car, as digitalized as everything is. That is also something that people should be expected to understand - don't drive and use a phone.

  • Toyota - "Moving Forward" - Even when you let your foot off the gas pedal..

Toyota - "Moving Forward" - Even when you stomp on the brakes..

Toyota - "Moving Forward" - Even when you shift into neutral & pull the E-brake.

Toyota - "Moving Forward" - Until it slams into the back of a semi-truck @ 110 mph

  • Toyota- "moving forward"- Even if you don't want to

  • FORD GM

moving forward-with the aid of a two truck

moving forward- with the aid of the gov bailout

moving forward-only for a few days then back to the shop

  • Are you an idiot? Ford or GM slogan is not even "Moving Forward" hahaha.. Its Toyota's slogan that's why I made a remark awhile ago lol. I'm sorry but I'm trading in my 2010 Highlander. I like it but I don't feel safe driving it. Maybe cause I'm not used to having my own car accelerating the throttle for me. I'm getting a 2010 GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid tomorrow. I already test drove it 2 days ago and I fell in love with it. Sorry Toyota. You failed me.

  • dude, you are an idiot. Toyota is being picked on for taking over the auto market. Toyota cars are still top quality. Trade in your Highlander for a crap Denali (which is nothing more than a Tahoe), and as for "hybrid" - whatever. Is that your right-wing approach to hugging a tree? There is nothing wrong with these cars than MAYBE a few tweaks. Have you seen the CEO of GM or Ford in front of Congress for some of their recalls in the last couple of years? Exactly.

  • @rarelibra

These is not a matter of who builts a better car, tree hugging or who has less recalls, it's justs a matter stepping up to the plate and admit the srew up ( wich they did ) and correct the problem and next time they screw up grab the bull by the horns on time like Ford and GM had done in the past.

  • @rarelibra

every Libra is a genius :D

    exactly my thoughts mate

  • lol this is basic driver's ed stuff... idk why people do not already know this. your best bet? drive stick :D a real proper manual won't have such problems at all

  • An analogous life and death (er...birth) situation is whether when you see the girl of your dreams at the grocery store, so you casually say hi to her or do you LOCK UP? Perhaps if you more often maintained situational awareness and made anticipation a part of your habitual demeanor, you wouldn't have to live the romantic death of marrying a hag.

  • Yea, but then you can't go up to Capital Hill and get lots of crying face time on TV.

  • Well bugger me, using the brakes to stop the car...innovative.

...and putting the car in neutral to disengage the engine from the driving wheels. You really are an expert.

Now seriously, if anyone driving a car doesn't know this stuff, they need to learn how to stop the acceleration by driving off a cliff and die, making the roads safer for those who actually know how to utilise their brain for higher level functions.

  • I see what you are saying , but understand that some people can't do this , he is just trying to make people understand that its not the end of the world if this happens to them.

I work in I.T desktop help and what this guy is doing is what I do every day with computers and users lol.

"My screen doesn't turn on ! " humm .. have you tried turnign the computer on ?" " oh ! thanks you are soo good at computers! " lol

  • This should help some people. Hell its good to know about driving any car.
