  • winston is the man. his policies are so true blue kiwi. and he wants to give the dikshits the boot.

  • I am in The helensville electorate, and personally asked John Key to vote no for the civil union Bill, and as our democratically elected representative, he did as we asked. He would not have done so if many members of our community asked him to. This is the best possible example of a politician, he will act accordingly to the wishes of the electorate he represents. This is in stark contrast to the Labour party who were all forced to vote according to what Helen wanted.

  • you mean like a demagogue

and fuck you you dumb bigot

  • Okay, no need to be rude. I assume then, you would rather have your representative ignore the wishes of the electorate and vote however they want?(more like however they're told to vote). I would rather have a politician who listens than ignores.

  • you mean have a referendum for every single issue in every single electorate

"and fuck you you dumb bigot" was for your view on the civil union bill and it still stands.

  • I never said have a referendum on every issue. But when a large group of people from an electorate approach their MP on any given issue (not every issue), for example the Civil Union Bill, Anti-Smacking bill, Electoral Finance etc. They should listen to the wishes of the people they are representing, not forced to ignore them like all Labour MPs are.

I will not participate in name calling because someones views are different to mine.

  • no you didn't. but that's what you'd need to do. do only the people who write letters to their MPs count? everyone would need to express their view; not just those who are loudest.

i realise you were only using the civil union bill as an example for a different point, but people need to be called out on their shit. and being against the civil union bill is quite clearly shit. unless it's because you support nothing less than marriage, but i get the feeling that's not the case.

  • If people don't express their views to their MPs, no one else will. Frankly, if you aren't prepared to speak up, so be it.

90% of bills that go through parliament are trivial and do not need a referendum at all.

I don't get why you are so keen on bagging my views. I'm a very tolerant person and won't force my views on anyone but that doesnt mean that I agree with them..

It's a proven fact that children benefit greatly from having a strong, loving family with a Mum and a Dad.

  • i agree you wouldn't need a referendum for every bill. it's stupid. but without one you don't know what the electorate wants, so to claim that john key is a good politician by listening to a few people "speaking up" is also stupid. it doesn't represent the views of the entire electorate. he might've voted that way anyway even without anyone expressing their views.

gay people can have strong, loving families too and they could legally adopt children before the civil union bill anyway.

  • True, if a small number of people from the electorate asked to vote a particular way, it wouldn't be too important, but when the numbers are hitting the thousands like he received for the Anti-smacking bill I think that's getting quite large.

I don't doubt the fact that same-sex couples can have loving and strong families, but it has been proven highly beneficial for a child to have been brought with both a mother and a father present, for a whole range of reasons.

  • so you'd like it to be illegal for gay couples to adopt or have children through a sperm donor or surrogate mother? that's a separate issue from the civil union bill. being against the civil union bill for that reason doesn't make sense because they have nothing to do with each other. john key votes the way he does because those are his views. he was chosen by your electorate because they felt he was the candidate who's views were most aligned with theirs.

  • John Key was actually going to vote in favour of the civil union bill, but he disregarded his own views in favour of the views of the people in his electorate.

I wouldn't like to make it illegal, I just don't agree with it and don't think it's entirely fair on the children as they have no choice in the matter.

I'm against the civil union bill because I disagree with it, that does not make me a bigot or a hater, it means I disagree with it.

  • you just said you're against it because you're against it.

  • Okay, I'm against it because it is in conflict with my beliefs/ideals/morals/views/principles.

    You knew what I meant..

  • @shreddakj

    like all Labour MPs are.

I will not participate in name calling because someones views are different to mine.

ummm I think you just did...

  • @trademestuff Damnit. I wish there was some way I could remove those comments that I made. I was 17 then and my views are polar opposites to what I hold now.

  • @shreddakj

Well glad to know you like hopefully many NZers have seen the flaws in John Key. I'm personally indifferent towards the Civil union bill but oppose gay marriage(still a labour supporter though).

  • @trademestuff I'm not really a fan of any of the old time career-politicians at the moment. Labour and National both have their fair share of their kind, so I'm a-political at the moment, who knows what I'll be voting for come next election. hehe.

  • Haha. Awesome.
