Yep, Thanksgiving, 1987 at The Spectrum in Philly. I'm in the first 3 rows, somewhere, but I've never been able to pick myself out. Glad I found this one again.
I was at this concert that was live on MTV Thanksgiving 1987. I am 2nd row center. I can see myself but it's really hard to see. My brother caught the drumsticks from the drummer when he threw them out to the audience. It was weird MTV wanted the band to stop playing during commercials but the band said screw it and kept playing. It was a 2 hour live MTV event.
One of my Hooters faves. While they may not be around much any more, save the occasional reunion concert, The Hooters (and members of it) had a rather large influence on the music scene since the late 80s and early 90s. If you've heard Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" (co-written by Rob Hyman) or Joan Osborne's performance of "One of Us" (written by Eric Bazilian), you've experienced some of that influence.
@susbider you do know they have put out a new studio & live album in the last 2 years? Also, Dave U. is working on a great project called "Songs In The Pocket" - look up Songs In The Pocket Dot Org. :)

I love this song it meant so much to me back in the day, too bad Homolka had to ruin it ! Thank goodness for Carla with a C. Oddly I never knew the song was about a Hurricane. Strange must google search the topic now.
@unskinnyboba I was there too bob....if you were looking at the stage....I was on the left side, first level like 2 sections over from the stage. I remember leaving family on Thanksgiving to go....it was an AWESOME show and broadcast live on MTV!!! Great memories!!!
i only got to see them once, and that was at the 4th of july concert they played at the philly art museum when i was a kid. i've always been a fan and i would love to see them live again. the only question i have i why i've only heard 2 songs of theirs on the radio: and we danced, and all you zombies. i dunno if any of their others were released for the radio but i'd love to hear more, especially this one and brother, don't you walk away
i have to comment here...i'm from philadelphia and we all thought they were on the bounce to national fame especially after "live-aid"...it really makes me sad that one of the truly great philadelphia bands rarely tours here like they do in germany...(although the logistics of touring were once explained to me)...make no mistake we LOVE the hooters here at home....
@Cafeeine Point taken, but I'm not sure it really is all that trivial. What does it say about popular culture and by extension society, when artists such as these, with so much going for them, are relatively ignored in comparison to significantly smaller talents? I won't waste time identifying, but insert just about name you've heard of. I'm also not sure that in their heart of hearts these guys wouldn't like to have sold 20 million more records.
@hanksteelbranch I agree with that. I think the hiatus might have had something to do with it. I had never heard of the band until (as a teen) bought a cd because I found the band name hilarious, only to find musical greats inside.
On the other hand I personally know musicians who never even made it to the limelight, and they should have. The Hooters already have a good spot in music history, which in the long run, I think is nothing to sneeze at.
@Cafeeine You may have succeeded in identifying the reason for their lack of recognition. The name "The Hooters" doesn't fit the band, and could actually be offensive to some people.Others might find it amusing, as you did,but either way, as a trademark it leaves a lot to be desired.I think most people just didn't take them seriously.I used to see these guys live in Philly in the early '80's.The name resulted from the Melodica, a novelty instrument they used. You can hear it in "And we danced".
@hanksteelbranch -- As you perhaps subtly infer, that these guys didn't become one of the biggest American bands tells us just about all we need to know about, (1) the taste and discernment of the American public and (2) the state of "the music business."
Love the song. Also love the random footage of Berlin and other parts of West Germany.

What a great song. The Hooters and the Alarm are two of the best and underrated late 80s bands.

Why these guys didn't become one of the biggest American bands is kind of a mystery.
hanksteelbranch 1 year ago
@hanksteelbranch They didn't do so only in the trivial 'popular' sense. They are one of the biggest ones in the musical sense.
