  • Can't believe you didn't put Rambo First Blood on this list.

  • Ha ha ha, it's kind a amazing how these good old C=64 tunes trigger my memory and take me straight back to the 80's! Gee, how I love those good old days... Hmm, I even dare to say that the whole computer-scene back then gave me more fun and satisfaction than it does now. I still remember "The 1001 Crew" and all the demos they made. In the end it just was f*cking unbelievable what a 8-bit 64k ram computer was able to perform. Check the Arkanoid theme music and you'll know what I mean! Peace...

  • Honestly, my brother and I had to have had over 75 c64 games, and the only music i recall from this list is Giana Sisters and the Ninja games..

  • Thumbs up because you don't have the same taste in music as I do. ^_^

  • Where is "Master of Magic"? (the adventure, not the later strategy game)? Thats definitely the best C64 music ever =)

  • not Robocop title screen?

i guess i'll deshumanize myself and face to bloodshed

  • Myth, History in the making.....best title ever!

  • "Indisputable" in the title provokes arguing. Also, many ppl seem to disagree (me too).

  • Good job, all these are excellent tunes, but if I were you I would change the title to something like "my personal favourites". A list that doesn't include Green Beret and Ocean loader, can't really be indisputable. Anyway that's my opinion.

  • These are all excellent tunes. With regards to "Rolands Ratrace", I recognised this soundtrack on "3-D Pinball" on the ZX Spectrum.

  • You have Giana Sisters in the list. You have my approval.

  • I also Dispute this list. But then who would'nt.

  • tscht tscht tscht ...I feel good!

  • Don't call it indisputable.

  • These were some fine tunes matey, thanks!

  • Obviously the creator of the vid never heard Flimbo's Quest or Hawkeye?

  • A nice little selection of C64 tunes, i have no idea why people would dislike this (possibly because of the poster's claim that the list was "indisputable"). The wistful and bouncy Bubble Bobble ST has always been my favourite (probably because that was the title I played the most). My adoration of that game continued onto SEGA's Master System. After that console (along with the original Nintendo) I found game soundtracks lost their identity somewhat... It was over once I heard real singing...

  • To all those who point out that the indisputable list is in fact disputable - Let me say this to you:

    Duh.

  • @ecexperimental Thank you! Took a while for someone to point that out! :)

  • Since the list is just your opinion you really shouldn't call it 'indisputable', especially when there's so many universally regarded C64 classics missing - Zoids, Delta, Sanxion, Knucklebusters, Thrust, Tetris, Spellbound, Parallax, Arcade Classics, Battle Valley, Bombo, Kettle, Mutants, Risk, Skate or Die, Commando etc. Your list is actually highly disputable :)

  • I totaly agree with the first and second place. Last ninja 2 has the greatest tracks ever . God bless

  • Fred Gray - Mutants, Hysteria?????

  • The Last V8 deserves a spot in the list. Not only was awesome by itself but also realy do the job to ambiance the game.

  • Indisputable isn't a valid word for such a broad era of fantastic game music. Still to this day people are recreating their most cherished C64 themes of yesteryear - Music is a matter of preference ontop of all that so your top 15 will not be someone elses top 15.

At the end of the day, C64 produced so so SO many memorable tracks that an undisputable list of any sort is 100% impossible.

  • Where is all the Hubbard stuff? He was the master of C64 music. Crazy Comets and Commando should be in the top five, not to mention Sanxions loading music, which should be challenging Monty on the Run for number 1...you are way to hung up on The Last Ninja music, only the first one had a great tune.

  • @punkoid76 lol

  • @unclejubalon why lol, he can't have his fuckin' opinion? lol your ass

  • @punkoid76 thing on a spring? hubb :)

  • @punkoid76 Rob Hubbard & Paul Norman. RH is my first, because he had a great ear for catchy grooving compositions, but he also took the SID to another level with his insane amount of things happening at once for 3 notes at a time. Paul Norman wasn't much of a wiz on the sound side of music--they sound as basic sawtooth, square, triangle, etc. as it gets, but he had the mind of a director and the ear of a composer, which made his games look and sound like awesome 8-bit movies.

  • These are all awesome, but by no means is it indisputable. :D Many epic tunes are missing; Master of Magic, Parallax, Delta, Wizball, The last V8, so on and so on. Basically one thing we can agree on: The C-64 music kicked ass, and for the time, was absolutely epic compared to other systems.

  • I also am a massive fan of all the Last Ninja soundtracks. For me the best was the music for the end sequence at the end of Last Ninja 3!

  • I dispute this list! Where is Turrican?

  • Turrican? :\

  • Hmm, Great Giana Sisters looks familiar somehow, but I just can't place it...

  • Power drift, Platoon and Rambo my friends :-)

  • My guess is that there are very few titles people agree on when it comes to best C64 music, since there were so many great tunes back in the days. Bubble Bobble may be one of the least disputed entries on your list. Apparently, cuteness WILL prevail :-)

Thanks for posting your list! It contains a lot of unexpected tunes that I enjoyed a lot :-)

  • where is flimbos quest, commando, inter karate and very very much games there is great music ...

  • @damjano23 exactly, not having commando makes this so called Top 15 absolute garbage. C64 Commando theme on youtube alone has over 150,000 views, that tells you everything you need to know.

  • Target Renegade FTW

  • Yes, I'm a freak, a maniac, an idiot, a geek: a c64 fanatic. It was the C64 that made me love tech music (synth pop, techno, industrial, etc)

For me there is no top 10 or top 25 musics. I love'em all!

I love them for being simple and yet interesting, being played by (in present days) a poor hardware and yet showing many sounds and fx.

The SID never dies, the SID lies within XD

  • Where is Chimera?

  • robocop, top 25??

  • ..Id like to dispute this list!! :p

  • OMG that dominator track is unreal!

  • The Treasure Island Dizzy tune is great! :-)

  • There are at least 2 songs that should be on this list:

    1: Crazy Comets soundtrack youtube.com/watch?v=zbQoQFLM_1s&feature=related

2: Green Beret soundtrack youtube.com/watch?v=Ymajs4GdeFI (The song that is 4:12 into clip)

Also "Last Ninja 1 -lvl 2- the Wilderness" and Cybernoid soundtrack should probably be here.

  • Comment removed

  • @CarnacDK If I was to include all Last Ninja tunes worthy of mention, the list would consist entirely of Last Ninja tunes

  • I personally would have reversed one and two positions, but all in all and damn good list.

  • No Flimbo's Quest? OBJECTION!

  • Bing bing bing ba-bing bing bing-a ba bing bing bing ba bing bing bing!

  • i cannot on my life find 8:57 :(

  • @ivstuntman

This is a part of one othe best OST of a game, it was composed by Matt Gray for the Commodore 64 game Last Ninja 2, the level ist "THE BASEMENT" chech this video on the finder and go minute 3:00

  • accolade grand prix missing!!!

  • forbidden forest for sure- when he would dance after clearing a level that song is short but owns

  • i think auf widersehen monty is the best :P

  • roland rat race rules !!!

  • When puzzle bobble came on I was like OMG I remember this! Then Treasure Island Dizzy came on, OH THE NOSTALGIA <333333

  • cult !!!!!

  • why is my hades nebula different (and not so good as here!!)

when i play it in my sidplayer ??? ack! help

  • Problem with creating lists like this is that there's a compulsion to include lots of composers, when in truth Hubbard and Galway would dominate heavily. Several of these tracks are somewhat second-tier. Lots of the Hubbard greats aren't here: Zoids, Nemesis the Warlock, Master of Magic (which arguably should be #1), One Man and his Droid. And a track that's often overlooked, but is really superb, is Fred Gray's "Mutants".

  • great list , just putting my elbow in, i think bubble bobble is way over rated, its ok on arcade, not bad on c64, c64 had much better original tunes.

  • Bubble Bobble, yes! :D

Never played Monty On The Run, but I really like the music at number 5. Nice melody.

I would rate Last Ninja 2 highest too, especially the music for the first 2 levels (Park and Street).

Some of my own personal favourites are Turrican 2, Creatures 2 and Turbo Charge.

  • It's a great C-64 Sound-Remix. THX

  • zybex,draconus,turbo outrun,bmx kidz,hawkeye????? good selection none the less!

  • Jesus is future king of earth, repent for his judgement comes

  • where's international karate?

  • Hah. I never played "Thing on a Spring", but it sounds like the composer easter-egged an homage to the M.U.L.E. theme in his song -- there's a base line at the beginning that sounds just like it.

  • Thanks for the upload

We all have our personal favs - I would have added Barbarian and Rambo First Blood Part II to the list. Was there a need to add the Last Ninja series seperately?

    Great list nonetheless

  • no supremacy? douchebag

  • TARGET RENEGADE. IT'S AWESOME TUNE.

  • Good times! thanks for memories

  • Another 2 you should have included are Vendetta & Driller, but i guess that would make it a top 12 ;)

  • Last Ninja 1 beats nr 2 easy!

  • Myth at the top 3, I totaly agree!!! =) Great Song!!

  • I'm thinking lists like these are based allot in sentimentality. If you were not having the time of your life playing the above games, then you may not love these songs to the same degree of the poster. For instance, my list would have Tetris, Maniac Mansion, Druid, Chimera, the load screen to Maniac Mansion, Way of the Exploding Fist, and many others. But I have incredible memories of all those games, so of course my list would be biased. As will all of yours. Lets just thank the poster :)

  • where's flimbo's quest ? commando ? ghost n goblins ? spy vs spy ? Fiendish Freddy ?? hello ???

  • Great games man.. sure there´ll be a lot more, but great job instead.

    LOAD "*",8,1 RULES !

  • Astonishing...the creator says "no arguing, please", and everyone starts off with "I'm not arguing, but" before launching into the usual "your list is crap" rubbish.

Some of these wouldn't have been my favourites, although the majority of the tunes you've listed here were hugely influential and are distinctly recognisable even today, so they're a good choice.

  • Yeah I'm gonna have to dispute this list.

  • Yeah I'm gonna have to dispute this list.

  • I'm not arguing, but are you really sure Jeroen Tell and the Maniacs of Noise, with all the masterpieces they have created, can be kept out of this ranking? There's nothing they made that you like? Turbo Out Run?? Eliminator?? Zamzara?? Rubicon??

  • @ryo1999

Myth with music by Jeroen Tell is number 3 on the list, man!

  • some good ones but by far not the best ones, actually quite a weird bunch of tunes here:D

  • LAST NINJA AND MATT GRAY RULE!!!!

  • You are a Last Ninja fan and you didn't include The Palace song in this list? For shame.

  • yay! LOAD "*",8,1

  • Duuude what about Deflektor?

    Or Commando, for that sake?

  • Bubble bobble, flimbo's quest, midnight resistance best c64 themes. But to be honest i love all of them

  • No Commando?

  • Matt Gray had a very distinctive sound. Everything he did sounded like Last Ninja 2.

  • Thanks to the SID chiptunes back then weren't just a bunch of squarewaves :)

  • Master of Magic isn't #1?!? It's not even on the list?!?

  • I'm feelin 7:44

  • Why for the nostalgia? Being a kid is all about how you feel. Go find an emulator (doperoms. com) and enjoy! You create every waking moment of your life, not a game!

  • Man I loved the Dominator music!

  • If you just look at the music, then the sounds of Clystron 2 rule over everything ever made for the C64!

    Long live Thomas Detert!

  • Needs Magicland Dizzy, Mission A.D track 2, and pretty much every single track from Creatures 2 which is one of the best c64 games ever made.

It's going to be impossible to ever agree a list with everyone, I don't agree with most, but good job on The Last Ninja 1 and Myth being high in the list.

  • atomix,batman the movie

  • Comment removed

  • Good list but missing Turrican 2.

  • Bubble Bobble? Check. Giana Sisters? Check. Monty on the Run? Epic Check.

But what about R-Type? Sanxion? Commando? Comic Bakery deserves a spot on any C64 music list.

Oh crap, I just disputed The List.

  • omg...the memories!! truly making me emotional

  • Parallax?

  • Got a touch of Nostalgia this week.... decided to write PAC MAN..... First wrote a Sprite designer/Editor........ Now coding the Music..... Wish Hubbard was my mate... I have met him, I just stood there and shook... My girlfriend had to do the talking, I was about to **** myself.... Those were the day's..... and these day's I live half way up a volcano in the jungle in Asia... the locals really don't know what the heck is going on when I blast PARRALAX out of my 2000 watt amp... at 4 am. :)....

  • Some good stuff in there, but where's Tim Follin in all this eh? Bionic Commando anyone? Good list tho, nice one.

  • ???zamzara, platoon, robocop????u missed out the bestones

  • @drbilly100 Yeah, and Rambo!!

  • FORBIDDEN FOREST. Sorcery! Caverns of Khafka (sp?) had a good one, too, if I recall correctly.

  • where is turbo outrun?!

  • Many great things here, but too many happy songs for my taste. I had other favorites.

  • wow,a top c64 music list without commando.you will not see manny of those

  • A great selection no doubt, but "indisputable"? :P

There's no Traz, no Ghosts 'n' Goblins, no Commando, no Cybernoid II, no Bionic Commando, no Skate or Die, no Delta...

Ah what the heck, they're all awesome - maybe you should make it into a Top 25, so we can all agree ;)

Its amazing that after 25 years, the ol' breadbox still warms our hearts so easily... thanks for the memories! :D

  • Very nice set! You could easily put many sid´s from Last Ninjas, those are so great.

  • Thanks Sid!

  • You missed lightforce, best c64 tune ever

  • first one i remember from revenge of the nerds. lol.

  • lets face it...the title screens and the music were often way better than the games itself...nostalgie or not...

    but still,i miss those times..

  • No "Gerry the Germ", No "Human Race".... while i understand you cant have the entire list filled with music by Rob Hubbard, still..... i am disappoint!

  • whoah I was just about to write a rather curt post about you putting Last Ninja 3 on there and skipping the first two (both of which had better music) before noticing your top choice was the same as my own, LN 2. Phew..you are redeemed.Matt Gray, probably the best musician the C64 ever had.

  • Monty On The Run is so awesome... and so is the Machinae Supremacy remix of it :D

  • Giana sisters, ghost n goblins, commando are some of my favs

  • Bubble Dizzy music deserves a mention

  • ¿Super Cycle of Bob Vieira?. :(

  • Hearing this tunes inspires me so much. I have to dig out my C64 and start composing! This is awesome stuff man! luv it

  • Project:Stealth Fighter, greatest SID ever.

  • Best SID's ever done are

    Delta

    Commando

    Ocean Loader 3

    Last Ninja 1 level 1

    Wizzball

    One Man and his droid

    Cybernoid 2

    My personal opinion :)

  • @mrtwig80

you might like this one then:

    Delta Theme Recovermix c64 2010

  • c64 was cool in 1989

    amiga in 1991

    and pc in 1998

is it time for real life now in 2010 ?

  • @superfrog1977 You are corrected - ->...c64 was dead in 1989. You bought Amiga in 1989 ,or a PC also-for the games (1989 but without soundcard) ) ,, and people that didnt understand Dos bought PCs ( now with soundcard's )in 1995-96 for the newly windows 95 and real life gaming in 20 years with real computer Ai and worlds.

  • As time passes on, all i can say that modern kids have no idea how much they missed when they werent around when C-64 was king. Nothing wrong with modern games but jeez, back then it was an adventure when you popped in a new game tape/disk. I bet i'm going to remember this old stuff when im 80.

  • @heikkint I have to agree, Kids are missing out, at christmas we all get together and play the c64 games, my brothers son whos just turn 4 has got in to them (way of the exploding fist is his favorite) .

  • Mnn tops, great watch!

  • Turbo Outrun, Cybernoid 1+2, BMX Kidz, Master of Magic, Knuckledusters, Mutants, Thrust and Bionic Commando. Best ones on this vid are Monty on the Run and Thing on a Spring. All the Last Ninja stuff sounds too chiched 'Oriental' to me!

  • Commando and Giana Sister rre the best

  • good yeeess.

    no habla.

  • Where's Creatures I &II?

  • god i love this - grew up with C64 - most happy time of my life (that era generally - not just the C64!)

  • Less is more! Back in the 80s the tunes were far better than the overly polished stuff we get on games now!

  • I only agree with the top 2.

Missing games like Wizball, Space Harrier, Ghosts'n Goblins, International Karate, Bionic Commando etc.

  • thing on a spring rocked...

  • so thats not the scientology guy?

  • YES! Much love for number 3. That's probably my favourite of all time on the C64.

  • Indisputable top 15 C64 tracks - Indisputable only if Crazy Comets, Commando, Delta, Sanxion, Lightforce, any of the ocean loaders, Green Beret, Ace 2, Parallax, Rambo and Thrust were mixed in there...

I mean really Hades Nebula & Super Hang On!? Really?

  • can see hes not a real retrogamer c64 fan from these sound selections, new generation sidder

  • Commando and Mountie Mick's Death Ride has also great music too

  • LOL myth for c64 os conan the barbarian for nes except the music is shit

  • Where is #10 - 'Treasure Island Dizzy' in your Top15 SIDs .zip file?

What are the Top15 C64 Games of All Time?

  • No Hawkeye? At least Myth is in there.

  • Some very odd choices for "indisputable all time greats". Only the tunes from 8 -1 are worthy of consideration, IMO. There are so many awe inspiring C64 tunes out there... what's so special about the Super Hang On music?

  • no flimbo's quest, YOU LOSE

  • I'm at number 4! yeeeh... eheh :-)

  • Took up my C64 from the old box and man i cant stop playin it. So freakin good games and i have 1500 of em, so glad that i kept that wonderful mashine. I allso rank Last Ninja 2 as the best but the tune here is not the one im talkin about. Search Last ninja 2 longplay and u will find the best tune ever......

  • My claim to fame was having a game printed and put on disk, not disc! On C&VG, the best and most amazing computer magazine ever, what the hell happened to that? It owned the 1980's! x

  • Ark Pandora. If you havnt heard it check it out.

  • the best console ever made

  • arrrghhhhhhhh thing on a spring.gimme a flashback and i nearly put my fist through my monitor.fucking annoying that game was lol

  • Pretty Good.

  • Funny, I also made a Top 10 list (check it out) and only 2 of your favourite tunes are in mine.

    Well tastes differ, I assume.

  • Gari was a mate of mine, but I've lost touch since he moved to the USA.. Glad he made the list :-)

  • Best days of my life.. I had the pleasure of being a programmer for Ocean Software... Galway had great use of the SID, and Hubbard, wow, what he could do back then!

  • What games did you work on?

  • @ftimesf Hubbard is a legend. The Beethoven of C64 music.

  • @ancalites I have to agree completely..

  • Comment removed

  • @ftimesf So how did things work back then? Did you have to code all the music, or was it all generated for you?

  • @TaoistZenMaster Some of us coded music routines in the early days but just for fun. Hubbard coded his own routine as did people like Dalglish etc.. When I was coding games we were gives the completed routine just to slot into the software.

  • @ftimesf Wow, that's amazing, I remember all those sound shaping commands just glancing through some that code, I really respect you guys and how much work you had to put in to achieve so little. I grew up in those times, but now I program stuff in c# and wpf, asp.net c18, c32 etc. way easier these days lol.

  • @ftimesf I am shaking a little bit, honoured to share some words to someone who coded for Ocean.

  • @TaoistZenMaster I have to admit when I first entered the offices of Ocean and was working in the same place as some of the legends, I was totally in awe..

  • @ftimesf

Nice ! Ocean was a real quality stamp back then
