Ha ha ha, it's kind a amazing how these good old C=64 tunes trigger my memory and take me straight back to the 80's! Gee, how I love those good old days... Hmm, I even dare to say that the whole computer-scene back then gave me more fun and satisfaction than it does now. I still remember "The 1001 Crew" and all the demos they made. In the end it just was f*cking unbelievable what a 8-bit 64k ram computer was able to perform. Check the Arkanoid theme music and you'll know what I mean! Peace...
Good job, all these are excellent tunes, but if I were you I would change the title to something like "my personal favourites". A list that doesn't include Green Beret and Ocean loader, can't really be indisputable. Anyway that's my opinion.
A nice little selection of C64 tunes, i have no idea why people would dislike this (possibly because of the poster's claim that the list was "indisputable"). The wistful and bouncy Bubble Bobble ST has always been my favourite (probably because that was the title I played the most). My adoration of that game continued onto SEGA's Master System. After that console (along with the original Nintendo) I found game soundtracks lost their identity somewhat... It was over once I heard real singing...
Since the list is just your opinion you really shouldn't call it 'indisputable', especially when there's so many universally regarded C64 classics missing - Zoids, Delta, Sanxion, Knucklebusters, Thrust, Tetris, Spellbound, Parallax, Arcade Classics, Battle Valley, Bombo, Kettle, Mutants, Risk, Skate or Die, Commando etc. Your list is actually highly disputable :)
Indisputable isn't a valid word for such a broad era of fantastic game music. Still to this day people are recreating their most cherished C64 themes of yesteryear - Music is a matter of preference ontop of all that so your top 15 will not be someone elses top 15.
At the end of the day, C64 produced so so SO many memorable tracks that an undisputable list of any sort is 100% impossible.
Where is all the Hubbard stuff? He was the master of C64 music. Crazy Comets and Commando should be in the top five, not to mention Sanxions loading music, which should be challenging Monty on the Run for number 1...you are way to hung up on The Last Ninja music, only the first one had a great tune.
@punkoid76 Rob Hubbard & Paul Norman. RH is my first, because he had a great ear for catchy grooving compositions, but he also took the SID to another level with his insane amount of things happening at once for 3 notes at a time. Paul Norman wasn't much of a wiz on the sound side of music--they sound as basic sawtooth, square, triangle, etc. as it gets, but he had the mind of a director and the ear of a composer, which made his games look and sound like awesome 8-bit movies.
These are all awesome, but by no means is it indisputable. :D Many epic tunes are missing; Master of Magic, Parallax, Delta, Wizball, The last V8, so on and so on. Basically one thing we can agree on: The C-64 music kicked ass, and for the time, was absolutely epic compared to other systems.
My guess is that there are very few titles people agree on when it comes to best C64 music, since there were so many great tunes back in the days. Bubble Bobble may be one of the least disputed entries on your list. Apparently, cuteness WILL prevail :-)
Thanks for posting your list! It contains a lot of unexpected tunes that I enjoyed a lot :-)
@damjano23 exactly, not having commando makes this so called Top 15 absolute garbage. C64 Commando theme on youtube alone has over 150,000 views, that tells you everything you need to know.
This is a part of one othe best OST of a game, it was composed by Matt Gray for the Commodore 64 game Last Ninja 2, the level ist "THE BASEMENT" chech this video on the finder and go minute 3:00
Problem with creating lists like this is that there's a compulsion to include lots of composers, when in truth Hubbard and Galway would dominate heavily. Several of these tracks are somewhat second-tier. Lots of the Hubbard greats aren't here: Zoids, Nemesis the Warlock, Master of Magic (which arguably should be #1), One Man and his Droid. And a track that's often overlooked, but is really superb, is Fred Gray's "Mutants".
Hah. I never played "Thing on a Spring", but it sounds like the composer easter-egged an homage to the M.U.L.E. theme in his song -- there's a base line at the beginning that sounds just like it.
We all have our personal favs - I would have added Barbarian and Rambo First Blood Part II to the list. Was there a need to add the Last Ninja series seperately?
I'm thinking lists like these are based allot in sentimentality. If you were not having the time of your life playing the above games, then you may not love these songs to the same degree of the poster. For instance, my list would have Tetris, Maniac Mansion, Druid, Chimera, the load screen to Maniac Mansion, Way of the Exploding Fist, and many others. But I have incredible memories of all those games, so of course my list would be biased. As will all of yours. Lets just thank the poster :)
Astonishing...the creator says "no arguing, please", and everyone starts off with "I'm not arguing, but" before launching into the usual "your list is crap" rubbish.
Some of these wouldn't have been my favourites, although the majority of the tunes you've listed here were hugely influential and are distinctly recognisable even today, so they're a good choice.
I'm not arguing, but are you really sure Jeroen Tell and the Maniacs of Noise, with all the masterpieces they have created, can be kept out of this ranking? There's nothing they made that you like? Turbo Out Run?? Eliminator?? Zamzara?? Rubicon??
Why for the nostalgia? Being a kid is all about how you feel. Go find an emulator (doperoms. com) and enjoy! You create every waking moment of your life, not a game!
Needs Magicland Dizzy, Mission A.D track 2, and pretty much every single track from Creatures 2 which is one of the best c64 games ever made.
It's going to be impossible to ever agree a list with everyone, I don't agree with most, but good job on The Last Ninja 1 and Myth being high in the list.

No "Gerry the Germ", No "Human Race".... while i understand you cant have the entire list filled with music by Rob Hubbard, still..... i am disappoint!
whoah I was just about to write a rather curt post about you putting Last Ninja 3 on there and skipping the first two (both of which had better music) before noticing your top choice was the same as my own, LN 2. Phew..you are redeemed.Matt Gray, probably the best musician the C64 ever had.
@superfrog1977 You are corrected - ->...c64 was dead in 1989. You bought Amiga in 1989 ,or a PC also-for the games (1989 but without soundcard) ) ,, and people that didnt understand Dos bought PCs ( now with soundcard's )in 1995-96 for the newly windows 95 and real life gaming in 20 years with real computer Ai and worlds.
As time passes on, all i can say that modern kids have no idea how much they missed when they werent around when C-64 was king. Nothing wrong with modern games but jeez, back then it was an adventure when you popped in a new game tape/disk. I bet i'm going to remember this old stuff when im 80.
@heikkint I have to agree, Kids are missing out, at christmas we all get together and play the c64 games, my brothers son whos just turn 4 has got in to them (way of the exploding fist is his favorite) .
Turbo Outrun, Cybernoid 1+2, BMX Kidz, Master of Magic, Knuckledusters, Mutants, Thrust and Bionic Commando. Best ones on this vid are Monty on the Run and Thing on a Spring. All the Last Ninja stuff sounds too chiched 'Oriental' to me!
Indisputable top 15 C64 tracks - Indisputable only if Crazy Comets, Commando, Delta, Sanxion, Lightforce, any of the ocean loaders, Green Beret, Ace 2, Parallax, Rambo and Thrust were mixed in there...
I mean really Hades Nebula & Super Hang On!? Really?
Some very odd choices for "indisputable all time greats". Only the tunes from 8 -1 are worthy of consideration, IMO. There are so many awe inspiring C64 tunes out there... what's so special about the Super Hang On music?
Took up my C64 from the old box and man i cant stop playin it. So freakin good games and i have 1500 of em, so glad that i kept that wonderful mashine. I allso rank Last Ninja 2 as the best but the tune here is not the one im talkin about. Search Last ninja 2 longplay and u will find the best tune ever......
My claim to fame was having a game printed and put on disk, not disc! On C&VG, the best and most amazing computer magazine ever, what the hell happened to that? It owned the 1980's! x
Best days of my life.. I had the pleasure of being a programmer for Ocean Software... Galway had great use of the SID, and Hubbard, wow, what he could do back then!
@TaoistZenMaster Some of us coded music routines in the early days but just for fun. Hubbard coded his own routine as did people like Dalglish etc.. When I was coding games we were gives the completed routine just to slot into the software.
@ftimesf Wow, that's amazing, I remember all those sound shaping commands just glancing through some that code, I really respect you guys and how much work you had to put in to achieve so little. I grew up in those times, but now I program stuff in c# and wpf, asp.net c18, c32 etc. way easier these days lol.
@TaoistZenMaster I have to admit when I first entered the offices of Ocean and was working in the same place as some of the legends, I was totally in awe..
Can't believe you didn't put Rambo First Blood on this list.

Phew..you are redeemed.Matt Gray, probably the best musician the C64 ever had.

c64 was cool in 1989
amiga in 1991
and pc in 1998
is it time for real life now in 2010 ?
superfrog1977 1 year ago

I bet i'm going to remember this old stuff when im 80.
heikkint 1 year ago
@heikkint I have to agree, Kids are missing out, at christmas we all get together and play the c64 games, my brothers son whos just turn 4 has got in to them (way of the exploding fist is his favorite) .

Turbo Outrun, Cybernoid 1+2, BMX Kidz, Master of Magic, Knuckledusters, Mutants, Thrust and Bionic Commando. Best ones on this vid are Monty on the Run and Thing on a Spring. All the Last Ninja stuff sounds too chiched 'Oriental' to me!

Less is more! Back in the 80s the tunes were far better than the overly polished stuff we get on games now!

I only agree with the top 2.
Missing games like Wizball, Space Harrier, Ghosts'n Goblins, International Karate, Bionic Commando etc.

No Hawkeye? At least Myth is in there.

Some very odd choices for "indisputable all time greats". Only the tunes from 8 -1 are worthy of consideration, IMO. There are so many awe inspiring C64 tunes out there... what's so special about the Super Hang On music?

My claim to fame was having a game printed and put on disk, not disc! On C&VG, the best and most amazing computer magazine ever, what the hell happened to that? It owned the 1980's! x

Best days of my life.. I had the pleasure of being a programmer for Ocean Software... Galway had great use of the SID, and Hubbard, wow, what he could do back then!

@ftimesf So how did things work back then? Did you have to code all the music, or was it all generated for you?
TaoistZenMaster 1 year ago
@TaoistZenMaster Some of us coded music routines in the early days but just for fun. Hubbard coded his own routine as did people like Dalglish etc.. When I was coding games we were gives the completed routine just to slot into the software.

@ftimesf Wow, that's amazing, I remember all those sound shaping commands just glancing through some that code, I really respect you guys and how much work you had to put in to achieve so little. I grew up in those times, but now I program stuff in c# and wpf, asp.net c18, c32 etc. way easier these days lol.
TaoistZenMaster 1 year ago
@ftimesf I am shaking a little bit, honoured to share some words to someone who coded for Ocean.
TaoistZenMaster 1 year ago
@TaoistZenMaster I have to admit when I first entered the offices of Ocean and was working in the same place as some of the legends, I was totally in awe..
