  • Making light of it or saying it doesn't have an effect on girls is pure ignorance. This is sexist stereotyping, that somehow made it through panels of CEOS who thought it was an appropriate toy for young girls. How are you going to blame the little girls whose parents buy them these things, and whom adults make these toys for? The only people to blame are the adults, who think it's okay to belittle little girls in such condescending ways.

  • Having female rolemodels (teachers, artists, and in this case a doll that is seen as what women should be like) say math is hard will cause girls to do worse on math class; there was a study about it.

  • Yes, but I'm pretty sure every girl that bought it would of agreed

  • I have a master's in physics. I think math is tough.

  • Iran just banned all shops that were selling all Barbies. By their approach to freedom and common sense, mullahs are like feminists on steroids.

  • Even girls are smart enough to know that this is a negative stereotype.

  • ppl were so mad :( I never really saw Skipper Courtney dolls talk :( without a phone!

  • I still have this doll, however, she has been modified over the years. Never changed the batteries & she still works. I never really thought of the sayings as offensive.

  • Math class IS tough! I didn't take math since grade 12, and I am at university planning on doing a masters in French literature . . .

Though I guess that depends on ones perspective . . .

I had this doll. I got it from Santa at a Christmas party. I will never forget her 'cause that Santa terrified me, but she did not say "math class is tough."

  • DO YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON ANYONE????

  • It's not that the doll would shape their ideas.

the doll quite frankly often acted as a role model for young (young) girls.

So when they see that their idol is sending out a message, it REINFORCES their own beliefs.

  • Let's go shopping!

  • Math is damn near impossible really. But this doll does make girls seem stupid and superficial. Not because Barbie is saying "Math class is tough" but because it's jammed in among a lot of silly phrases about fashion and such. Maybe "math class is tough" and "i'll always be here to help you" should have been put together as one in order to make it sound less offensive.

I'm not really offended. But I guess other people were.

  • @Adrastia Yeah I agree - "party dresses are fun" is actually MORE offensive, if any of the comments are offensive. And if she said that, it would sounds as if she were trying to help girls with their math, so, even though its tough, she keeps going and doesn't give up on math.

  • They should make a mathie version of this:

    Math class is tough.

I hate infinite dimensional vector spaces.

    Epsilon-delta makes no sense.

    etc.

Seriously, I am \offended by the complaint that math is tough at the high school level.

  • Math isn't tough if girls are willing to apply themselves and take that extra mile. But yeah, quite frankly math sucks balls.

  • Most people I know that hate math are dudes.

  • So what?? Barbie says "math class is tough" This society is so overly litigious and ultra-sensitive its ridiculous. Im a guy and math was my worst subject, so hard i was failing it left and right while i was just fine in every other subject. Anyone who thinks that the designers thought that girls or blonds or whatever are bad at math are just putting words in their mouths. Its all about perception. Math is not an easy class, it is for some but its not for everyone.

  • @lander77477 You're missing the point. Entirely.

  • @sojirokaidoh2 I am missing the point? how exactly?

  • @lander77477 Barbie is a role-model for young girls. They want to be just like her, liking what she likes and hating what she hates. Barbie complaining about math class discourages girls from wanting to learn.

  • @sojirokaidoh2 hmm, interesting point

  • @sojirokaidoh2 that's just stupid. they're not gonna love or hate math more just because of what a stupid barbie doll says.

  • @amyyyamy But to them, it's not just a stupid Barbie doll.

  • I went back to the museum where they had a huge exhibit full of Barbie dolls, and saw this doll among other controversial Barbie dolls.

  • Math is easy, I don't pay attention or do homework and I still get an A... oh wait, that's physics, which is always easier mathematically than the math prerequisites.

I hadn't had a math class in 2 and a half years and I still remembered everything, one dumb bitch I met took 2 years of calculus in high school -- I only had one -- but she took the college math placement exam and had to take precalc again...

  • Wait - are women saying that math isn't allowed to be tough because they're women? Are men the only ones allowed to take tough courses?

  • i'm with barbie on this one!!

  • Yahoo brought me here....

  • @legallyinsane456 Rofl same...

  • I thought they said "Math is hard." My brain must be broken!

  • It was not Matel but the fashion industry that put the ideas that girls should be as thin as barbie into girls heads. Barbies shape is not meant to make people think that everyone should look like her. Her shape is simply what helped make her cloths fit realistically on her. the formal wear of both the fiffty's and sixty's, when barbie came out, gave women a bell shape look giving women a curvacious profile.

  • Math class is tough was sort of just thrown in there, they were phrases a fifties teen character on a TV show would say inside a barbie that was dressed in current day fashion. Also before you shoot down barbie look at some interesting things about Barbie. Barbie in her early day's was one of very few toy's that was a female with a career. That's right Barbie was the first Doll Airline atendant, nurse, and doctor. cnt.

  • For example I recently saw a young man wearing a t-shirt that said. "Wait a minute I'll DROP everything and help you with your problem." Something along those lines. Those shirts sale simply on how catchy the phrase is. oh and teen talk barbie might have been more successful if her phrases weren't so random. cnt.

  • This was linked to a yahoo article about a Shirt JC penny took off it's shelves. The shirt say's "I'm too pretty to do my homework so my brother has to do it for me" They say it puts pretty over intellegence. However i understand to a kid the saying means nothing, it's cool talk. The same as the sarcastic t-shirts when I was in middle school. cnt.

  • why do i hate math now?

  • Never thought I'd say this, but...I agree with Barbie. Too bad I hate her and everything she stands for.

  • at least it's not

"if you don't do it, he'll totally break up with you"

"just pretend your eating a banana"

  • Math class isn't tough. I know the biggest bimbos ever who can pass, so I know they're not as harsh on grading as other subjects even is it's a rough teacher. That or I'm just a girl who loves and understands math, haha.

  • hang in there barbie...math class IS tough.

  • Yahoo!

  • All she is saying is that 'Math Class is Tough'. It's not like she is saying that she is giving up on math.

  • Malibu Stacy

  • I know how you feel Barbie. Fuck logs

  • its a fucking toy. get over it

  • Stupid. I'm a girl. I still collect valuable Barbies and model horses because it's fun . I don't see the big deal I don't think that there's anything sexist about it.

  • The people who make these distractions, already have mass amounts of money, why would they need more. It seems to me our country is under control of foreign corporations who are trying to slow are progression down. I refuse to buy into any of this garbage, when I have a child, T.V. is being thrown out, if he/she wants to no news shes READING the newspaper. I understand I sound like a rambling asshole, but this kind of shit makes my adrenaline run high, and I get so angry I cant focus properly

  • My teacher told me the other day "Asians and foreign born students are just smarter then us", and that comment alone pissed me off to know end. This doll is just a small part of why America's education system is just awful. I mean look at all the distraction's Americans are forced to buy into, EVERYTHING ON T.V. all the High Fructose Corn Syrup in our food. IF YOUR CHILD HAS ADHD she must be medicated. Einstein had symptoms of ADHD, where would we be in this world if Einstein was on Ritalin

  • @MegaNINJAKING next time say " yeah, Asians are really smart, thats why they kill rhinos , take their horns, grind them up, and use them as some kind of magical medicine in hopes of getting an erection" .

  • @bigrigJim ...maybe that's why there's over 1 billion Chinese out there...

  • @khmerchef

    Racist

  • @bigrigJim Oh man, thanks that is a fuckin dynamite come back.

  • i want to see a female marine barbie... that would be awesome.

  • "I'll take 10!"

  • Math class IS tough! Party dresses ARE fun!! I don't see the big effing deal. I doubt that a young budding female would have picked this up and then become automatically unintelligent from hearing a few truthful lines from a plastic toy.

  • @colorsinscenes truee.

  • @colorsinscenes

It's the idea that dolls act as extensions of the self for young people who play with them. Which may or may not have a basis in reality.

  • mind control

  • yahoo......

  • Really Barbie...? I took a few years of Calculus... If math isn't her thing maybe she should have focused on what she did like...

  • The doll had to be blond. -_-

  • New in 2011, updated Teen Talk Barbie "Math class is tough, I think i'll take a picture of my vag and text it to people!!"

  • "Math class is tough! Party dresses are fun!"

    Subliminal messagiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!

  • @MarcBrightside You are nuts, subliminal messages *SMOKE* dont exist.

  • Why does Barbie sound like a 40 year old Real Estate agent?

  • I had one of these but the black one Christy...she was my favorite one...but I dont she said that...of course they let Barbie say all the "cool" stuff.

  • it's not sexist. the doll was just made to talk about things most teen girls would've said back at the time. if they thought this was degrading, look at teen girls now.

  • @heavenlyeve I agree, I don't know what the protests were all about. When someone says that certain subjects are difficult to understand, it does not mean they are stupid or less capable.

  • And this is the reason why so many people still use kitchen jokes.

  • But it is tough.....

  • @melissaratliff Lol true!!

  • sad. really sad.

  • Umm.. math class IS tough!

  • @senorSHAZAM Speak for yourself. Not every girl is as dumb as you.

  • i don't think this is offensive or demeaning to women. i think it's a stupid thing for a barbie to say, but its harmless. i think the people who made this doll were trying to relate to the girls playing with the doll. "math class is tough!" "yeah, barbie, it is!" "do you have a crush on anyone?" "yeah, barbie, i do!" it's a silly toy that says some silly, girly things. and math class IS tough!

  • Well. Math class is tough. She has a point you guys.

  • Of course I have to agree that math class *is* hard lol.

  • I honestly do think that little girls can be "swayed by a piece of plastic." When they're really young, stuff as silly and mundane as this could very well affect their attitude towards life in the future.

Now at 10? That's when I think they're starting to make their own decisions and figure out their personalities. So yeah, at that age, it's kinda asinine to assume a barbie could ruin your child.

But then again...I've heard far too many SEVENTEEN year olds have conversations just like this.

  • Dammit, I thought we agreed to call it "Yakkin' With Youth!"

  • this is lie a barbe FOR TEENS ONLY not for chilren 10 and younger!

  • No! Barbies don't make girls stupid. I played with Barbies all my life and I'm not a dumbass. Oh wait, yes I AM.

  • awkward how thats a prettyyy accurate teenage convo

  • LOL!!! i had a barbie just like this one mine said: "Meet me @ the mall" "I Love to Dance" "wanna have a Pizza Party" "school Friends are the best"! OMG the childhood memories! :-)

  • whats this ghetto barbie? lol

  • @PrinceChaloner wtf, how is this ghetto in any way? In fact she sounds the complete opposite... like a suburban valley girl.

  • Yeah I know the feeling . . .

  • What is the second phrase she says? Lol it sounds like "Party drinkers are fun!" to me

  • @hawaiiatheart

The phrase is: "Party dresses are fun!"

  • the doll speaks the truth....my trig class makes me feel dumb :/

  • I'll always be here to help you! (Unless you need help with math, then your on your own.)

  • Any time I see this, I always remember the Malibu Stacey doll from the Simpsons XD

  • Girls knew math can sometimes be hard before Barbie said it. What's the big deal?

  • Yahoo brought me here :P

  • hahaha I had this when I was little and I cut all her hair off

  • BUT MATH IS TOUGH D:

  • So people were mad why?

Math class is tough, hell it isn't easy.

  • -.-

It's not like she was lying.....

  • @fruitpunch1027 math class is tough. it was made to be tough. always will be tough. hey i got a d, my best score in 2 years!!!! ;(

  • @rainbowheydrich abviously u were not a barbie girl......

  • @ThatSims2Maniac Nope.

  • Is this for sale?

  • I never knew that episode of the Simpsons where Lisa takes on Malibu Stacey was based on a real story.

  • Well, Barbie is right. Math Class is hard.

  • "just pretend you're eating a banana"

  • Calculus is TOUGH.

  • Lol, I'm a girl, and I laughed so hard at this xDDD "Math class is hard." I don't take offense, because I know it isn't true ;D Why can't other people look at it like that?

  • omg barbie is so right i dont know why those women make such a big problem just cause that phrase :( barbie have alway had enemies cause shes cute, fun and glamurous. i'm pretty sure the women who were upset were ugly, fat, unsexy women who fill their beauty hunger with books, maths and those ugly things

  • You know, Barbie's right.

  • That Barbie was not lying I passed all my math classes with D's LOL.

  • I feel like that Barbie today.

  • Math class is tough because you are a women and should be making sandwiches in the KITCHEN

  • @HawaiianB0Y123 Too bad no women will ever make sandwiches for your fat-ass. If there is one that does, shes a dumb bitch for staying with you.

  • @peachylover4598 You sound like a bitch that needs to think less and do what your told. Now go make me a sandwich and do the dishes.

  • @HawaiianB0Y123 lol. You cant fool me. I know your just some stupid troll on youtube trying to piss people off. I just thought it was funny to make a jab at you. Whatever im not fighting with some old prick. let me know when ur balls drop so i can send u a gift to congragulate you! : ) love ya!<3

  • @peachylover4598 well played peachylover well played :)

  • WHOA. I didn't realize I had this barbie until I instantly recognized that jacket and hat. That shit was definitely floating around my Barbie buckets with all the mismatched shoes....

  • what does barbie know about math class..shes plastic...omg i have an algebra 2 test tomm and bio test...so shut the hell up barbie

  • she COULD be saying "math class is tough" after acing it

  • hey...math class IS tough! :)

  • I've been trying to find one of these for years... any leads?

  • i'll always be here to help u ........ do u have a crush on anyone? EPIC LOL

  • But mine spoke Spanish and now that I think of it, she didn't say anything about maths class being though XD Maybe her sentences were changed when they translated them.

  • OMG I had that Barbie!! I named her Jessie because she reminded me of Jessie Spano from Saved by the Bell XD

  • @Arabelladarcy

i'd never seen it but i instantly thought of saved by the bell when i saw it. XD

  • I've learned that most people from England are horrible at writing.

  • holy shit it's my ex girlfriend

  • S M H, parents didn't get that math class IS tough! XD

  • @porkyminch01

Whats that, is that a real sentence???

Its just that my comment made at least a little bit sense.

I tend not to like making cryptic messages, that leaves me to join up the dots,

lol those maths is cuntfag ? has anyone,,,

can you send me the translation of that message, its just im not sure if English is your first language, or is that the point. You hate speaking english.

  • It should have looked like Paris Hilton or Jessica Simpson. Math class may be hard but we can learn it.

  • Why do Americans say "Math"?

its maths. unless what the americans are learning is much easier, and there is one 1 of those maths.

  • @rorrt because it is MATHmatics, not MATHSmatics

  • @wakkoswish123

i say its the Americans dumbing down...

plus its a plural noun, therefore the S. Both Webster and Oxford dictionaries say its a plural noun.

  • @rorrt OR maybe it's a regional difference and we can just live with it.

Really, if you're going to bash on U.S. Citizens (Americans), picking on the difference between 'math' and 'maths' is really not the way to go, as it comes off as petty.

  • @TrisBob92

Nope im not attacking all Americans, just the ones that say "Math".

which just so happens to be most of them, i really could'nt care much less.

I say that whilst we speak English. What the Americans claim as English, cant be, as the people in England don't say Math, we say Maths, for the afore mentioned reasons of it being a plural noun.

Now i wont go mental and say that the "10 items or less" aisle should be changed to "10 items or fewer", because madness would ensue.

  • @rorrt your syntax is randomly cleaved and your diction is pretentious. besides understanding and accepting regional differences, you should probably know how to speak English a little better before you try to tell everyone else how to do so.

  • @HRM2010

    i couldn't agree more!!!

    I am pretentious, and arrogant.

But the fact is that i agree that language changes over distance, i should know that especially as i live in the west country of England, and that language changes so much over the small distance over from London.

BUT like i said, its "Maths". not "Math", and if you ask ANYONE from ENGLAND, the country where "ENGLISH" originated from (AMAZINGLY!!!!!!!) if you say "Math", people will frown at you, and probably attack you.

  • @rorrt Hm. I've spoken to alot of people from England. Not one has ever said "maths".

  • @peachylover4598

Well the lessons in school in England are "MATHS", or "Maths"...or even sometimes "Mathematics"...

Im afraid its the Americanisation, of our beautiful language.

I have a friend whos dad works for the RAF, so has travelled around the country, and has moved to 6 or 7 different secondary schools, included sixth forms. And for this i asked him. All the schools hes gone to, not 1 has called it "Math".

And hes been all around the country.

  • @rorrt For such a insistent English snob, you have terrible grammar.

  • @Triundi

I will agree that i'm insistent. but i will disagree that i have terrible grammar.

Point out 1 part of that last comment that you found confusing, or syntactically incorrect.

But please understand that i really, really do understand as i have shown, that language changes over distances. As small a gap as 8 miles as i have seen. In the UK.

And if you say "Math", carry on. In the end, i really don't care.

Its just that we made an even better, less silly sounding word than "Math"

  • @rorrt i agree with you 100% i live in australia and used to live in USA, when we came here and i said "math" class people would look at me like like i could speak correctly, i think "Maths" just sounds more correct....and i grew up in america...

  • @rorrt As a comma after "nope"; nix the comma after "as English." The latter case is would be correct in a German sentence, though. "I say that whilst we speak English" is either a fragment, or a displaced sentence. For it to be correct and clear, it would need to mean "I say that while we concurrently speak in English," which is a pretty obvious statement. "Math should not be capitalized--again, that would be correct in a German sentence. There should not be a comma before the word "before."

  • @Triundi

    I agree.

  • @Triundi Lol, I don't know how tired I was when I wrote that, but it's full of typos. At any rate, I dunno, I just think quasi-dialects are just whatever they are. It's cool.

  • @Triundi Lol, I don't know how tired I was when I wrote that, but it's full of typos ("add a comma" and "case would"). At any rate, I dunno, I just think quasi-dialects are just whatever they are. Brits say it one way; Yanks say it another. It's cool.

  • Don't ask me! I'm just a girl!

  • Bitches need to learn their place.

  • The Valley Girl accent doesn't help. And it sounds like it's only with that line. Am I hearing wrong?

  • i am now a 39 year old woman. when i was 18 i got accepted into MIT, but on the day of my birthday i received this doll. i dropped out and now i am a prostitute.

  • hah.. I would have liked one of those dolls.. so I'd be like "its okay barbie I can help you"

because I used to talk to my barbies..

  • There's something wrong with mine..."my spidey sense is tingling! Anyone call for a webslinger?"

  • soo... lets C.... Math is Hard on Blonds.... IS THAT THE MESSAGE????? A lot of gurls need help not Barbie running them down!

  • I have a question... is there a YouTube of a Barbie sounding like G.I. Joe and a GI Joe sounding like Barbie out there.

I was told that for a brief time, a plant accidentally misplaced the voice clip in the WRONG doll. I would love to see it on YouTube.

  • That's amazing! I have a Barbie collector book with that doll in it, she's very valuable! You're very lucky :)

  • awesome, always wanted to hear her glad you got one how much was she, if you don't mind me asking?

  • But mathematics classes ARE tough. Walk up to an 18-year-old and ask them to grapple with complex field vector calculus, and they will more likely than not express their distaste at the idea of something so complicated.

The 0.01% that don't are allowed to speak out against this doll.

  • I think it was a stupid thing to eliminate all dolls who said the 'Math Class is Tough' thing ... math is hard, it's a fact!! Every girl, when reached school, has discovered how difficult math was ... so, Barbie was right!!! XD I hate math, of course!!!!!!!!! And I yell "Math is hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • But I think math class really IS tough.

I would love to have this doll.

  • I'm looking to buy a doll that says this line-- an inside joke with my family. Any ideas where I could buy one? I tried ebay-- nothing.

  • @SingingNeptune did you read the description? there's a 1000 of them world wide, the chances of you finding one, let alone affording it, are pretty damn low.

These sorts of collectibles can got thousands if not more.

  • =D! I think Barbie's voice is cute...

  • I never understood the big deal with that. Math class WAS tough!!! Lol. Algebra? Forget about it!

  • @crocetti1984 All this stupid talk she spouts encourage lazy, stupid behaviour in girls as well, which is a terrible idea in general. That's why.

  • I just think people advocated too much into it. I played with this Barbie and I didn't turn out lazy or stupid. I work very hard to be in college. People that think little girls are so influenced by something as stupid as a talking doll really need to re-examine their lives and realize that they are the ones stereotyping little girls by thinking they can be swayed by a piece of plastic.

  • @crocetti1984 Perhaps you turned out well despite Barbie, not because of her.

  • I knew Barbie was just a toy, a fantasy, not real life. They're fun to play with, but I don't think people are giving little girls enough credit to know the difference. That's like saying every little girl that plays with Doctor Barbie is going to want to become a doctor. They're just toys.

  • @crocetti1984

Doctoring is a dress-up game for Barbies, not a profession. If kids got to play doctor's helper, I'm sure a lot of them would aspire to doctoring. The idea that kids can automatically differentiate between play and reality is a little off - they learn by playing and personify everything around them. They know Barbie is a toy and they know she represents an ideal. Giving kids credit means assuming they learn from their environment and hence from the physical ideal of Barbie.
