When Apple first announced the iPad I thought it was the dumbest thing. I waited for the iPad 2 just to see updates like cameras, thinner, and lighter. And I can now honestly say that it is by far my favorite device. Easily.

I'm not a hacker, but this is just something I expect my mobile device to do. Apple removed all wifi sniffing apps from the itunes store. Clearly they don't understand my dream.
Actually I'm keeping my ipad and my desktop and getting rid of my LAPTOP. The laptop is too big to lug around and try using a laptop on your LAP. Can't be done (at least not comfortably.) The ipad is just sooo much more portable than a laptop. Just a thought......
I wonder what JeffJarvis thinks about the current tablet revolution that happens to be taking place this holiday season? Blackberry Playbook? Samsung Galaxy tab? Or even the fact that OS 4.2 has been released with the many amenities that were missing from the previous version.
7 months later and we still use ours every day. I have multiple PCs and laptops in the house but nothing beats the iPad for casual browsing, email, etc.
Ill get an ipad when it goes down in price. Nothing over 300$ sounds reasonable. I dont know many people who can afford it. And it cant cost that much to make. I feel like apple should lower the price and theyre sales will go up drasticly.

I had actually wanted an ipad since they came out and after months of working and saving i went and bought one today because it was touted as a "revolutionary product" and it seemed like it had a lot of uses. But i think in many situations it takes some actual hands on experience to see that it is not really needed for most people, especially when its $500.

Jeff - I usually totally agree with you, but I believe that you have missed the primary thought with the iPad or any Tablet style device. The laptop is a poor device for mobile applications. We have tried to use it because there was no other viable alternative. I plan to carry the iPhone and move to more powerful laptop that doesn't travel much. Desktop unit is now no longer necessary. iPad replaces the mobile laptop except in those situations requiring a laptop...those are usually few.
@sjsjms2000 there are many situations that require some kind of desktop or laptop.. like to run the most common of programs, play game that arent a gimic and use flash properly, the ipad is for people who know nothing about a computer and want to jump on the bandwagon and be one of the cool kids in town
@mark12897 you raise a great point on why an iPad is a great solution. The # of people that are scared or don't know how to properly operate a computer is still too high. An iPod is a simple device for these people to start off with and gain access to large amount of content that otherwise they would never have seen. Whether or not the content is of any worth - that may be another conversation.

I cannot wait to get an iPad here in Canada. To me it's role is in education. I think that tablets will replace kid's school books and school bags. I study languages at LingQ and will use the iPad to read and listen to War and Peace and my favourite Russian news articles with all the language learning functionality I need. It is best to know why you buy something before buying it.

A netbook has a faster processor, more ram, a keyboard, different kinds of ports, flash support, it can multitask (not that the iPad won't in the future); you can create, store and print documents, and it supports millions of applications and all different kinds of video and audio codecs. With the NVIDIA ION 2 coming out, a netbook will be able to play some modern games at respectable settings aswell. That's what a netbook can do that the iPad can't.

next time look up some info on what you are going to buy if it cost that much. why would you buy something that you think you would never use it? im going to wait for the 2nd gen to get one cus i got the 1st gen ipod touch and the 16 gb model cost $400 at the time now look $400 for 64 gb, and it does more so you should of found out more info on it or waited till the next models come out

Jeff - I usually totally agree with you, but I believe that you have missed the primary thought with the iPad or any Tablet style device. The laptop is a poor device for mobile applications. We have tried to use it because there was no other viable alternative. I plan to carry the iPhone and move to more powerful laptop that doesn't travel much. Desktop unit is now no longer necessary. iPad replaces the mobile laptop except in those situations requiring a laptop...those are usually few.

@mark12897 you raise a great point on why an iPad is a great solution. The # of people that are scared or don't know how to properly operate a computer is still too high. An iPod is a simple device for these people to start off with and gain access to large amount of content that otherwise they would never have seen. Whether or not the content is of any worth - that may be another conversation.

I cannot wait to get an iPad here in Canada. To me it's role is in education. I think that tablets will replace kid's school books and school bags. I study languages at LingQ and will use the iPad to read and listen to War and Peace and my favourite Russian news articles with all the language learning functionality I need. It is best to know why you buy something before buying it.

@lingosteve Apple has repeatedly censored or blocked apps by certain people for either moral reasons, or because the applicant was critical of Apple. They blocked flash from being on their platform and apps made with Adobe CS4. I'm not against tablets, but I am against the Apple walled garden. I'm sorry if I misread your comments, but you do mention iPad a lot and tablet only once, and my intent is to highlight that Apple's controlling culture does not belong in a public education system.

Well I definitly have a special need for my ipad because i have all my gaming on my ps3 and xbox and i dont need flash and i have a really crappy computer so for my personal needs, the ipad is perfect just for internet and applications plus my ipod touch is way to small (not because i have bad eyes).

A netbook has a faster processor, more ram, a keyboard, different kinds of ports, flash support, it can multitask (not that the iPad won't in the future); you can create, store and print documents, and it supports millions of applications and all different kinds of video and audio codecs. With the NVIDIA ION 2 coming out, a netbook will be able to play some modern games at respectable settings aswell. That's what a netbook can do that the iPad can't.
