It's not just what you teach here Mr. Shawn Clement, it's how you teach it! I always seem to find a way to feel these movements from your description and my golf is improving out of sight as a result. Many many thanks!!!
no resistance in this swing. the hips turn more than the shoulders going back. hips are like 60" turned and the shoulders about 30:. I understand his point, that's why every teacher has their own "schtick" - I hate this particular "schtick" - timing it would be impossible. maybe it's just the drill, would like to see him hit some shots before I took his advice. way too much hip turning. hip movement is a result, not a fundamental .the secret is in the dirt, meaning the feet.
@ascii456 So Bobby Jones was wrong huh!? Jack too? You will come around one day; it does not have to be now; I was where you are 20 years ago; I am a PGA Medalist by the way and have a few long drive competitions under my belt also...so yes, I can play and I can hit the crap out of it; Shawn
Shawn, I think that you are such great teacher. You keep things simple for me to understand, and you help me have patience and determination to get better.
For years i`ve been told to " rotate " my hips, which has only caused me to struggle with standing up during the swing with the right hip moving towards the ball. This instruction has changed my golf swing forever for the better in many ways -- even my balance. I might just add though that just by moving my left "butt" straight BACK ( away from the ball ) at the transition, seemed enough.
I can't believe I discovered this video only now. I used to lose my position with the right hip and spin out. This removed a lot of confusion I had with how the lower body is supposed to start the downswing and how the head is supposed to stat back. Great analogy of the right hanky wiping the glass, then the left hanky connecting and wiping through. I tell you I hit my drives better, farther and, more importantly, more consistent today than I ever did. Thanks and more power! Ian, Philippines.
awesome! interesting drill shawn! I've noticed you have a lot of stack & tilt influences (orrrr...does stack & tilt have shawn influences)?!?! Basically, I see some parallels...is the basis of your teaching on stack and tilt?
Surely you should start slightly away from wall when you set up and turn your right hip back until it touches so you get depth of turn in the backswing. If you do the move as you demonstrated then you'll be moving in toward the ball, against the resistance of the wall, as your hips turn back.
Thanks Shawn! I just fixed my ugly shank problem with this move, that I did use effectively before, but just seemed to "forget" about it, and then came the trouble :). Superb stuff, thank you again!
Begun using this drill and "wow" the power you can generate.I was turning the hips has fast I could to left field has I was taught and coming over the top before.I can see this from my vids.Thank You Shawn I am having more fun looking back at the other players drives again.
This guy is a pure athlete based on what I've seen in his vids. Anyone thinking that they can replicate what Shawn does, they should start with hitting the gym for a year straight before they even touch a club, and then count on practicing every day for two years. And then you'll still be halfway there.
Great Video, only just in the last month figured out about keeping my head behind the ball. Years of frustration and lack of progress, plus hurting my lower back are finally coming to an end. Just to let you know, your vid's have been a tremendous help. Not shooting the scores I want at mo' but feel now it's just a matter of time now. Finally hitting the ball like I am capable of, with even more power, less effort, less strain on my lower back, and with MORE CONSISTENCY.
Hi Shawn, Thank you for explaining this. I have been studying Mr.Hogan's swing some time. I have have read about his poor weight shift and even reverse weight shift from the golf gurus, Knowing full well that you cannot have a reverse weight shift and hit the ball that well. I mean the man only weighed #150 lbs. I tried this today and it works. Thank you for a very clear mental picture and explanation.
Just a quick question, I'm having trouble incorporating this move with the move from the video Best Downswing Weightshift; #1. I'm just curious does the move where you step on your left foot happen to transfer the weight happen simultaneously with the move of forcing your left side back to the window? I seem to struggle trying to incorporate both these moves and any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
@kb8228 It is one or the other; which ever feel better to you as they come to the same end result; you also want to see "create serious speed; shawn clement", "feet together and one leg update; shawn clement" and "horse shoes and lassos; shawn clement" to feel the rhythm and timing of these moves; you will understand what I mean when you see the videos! All the best; Shawn
PS; feel free to ask these kinds of questions in my forum; we have a great bunch of people there to help!
this drill is good to eliminate the reverse pivot problem which he unfortunatly does not touch much on. The reversee pivot will occur when instead of keeping flex in the lead leg(right) for right handed golfers, the leg becomes strait forcing all your weight to your left side this will result in a lack of power and a poor swing. may i suggest also adding a dowle or pole to the back leg in order to make sure that you keep your weight against it in the back swing to stop rvs pvt. 3.9 factor age17
Shawn, this is the best golf video/teaching method I've ever seen. This should be widely taught after grip, alignment, and posture as the first dynamic portion of the swing. Great job.
Shawn i have a QuESTION!!! ~ The farther we want to hit the ball do we increase the speed at which we do the "hogan power drill" or do you think it wise to increase the amount at which we do the power drill?!! please answer i really want to hit my irons further!!!!! btw love your vids they are always interesting and very well explained and thought out!
Great question! I have 3 very important videos for you to watch and the secret you will see in those are done by some of the longest players out there; Jack Nicklaus, Kenny Perry, Jaime Sadlowski, Bubba Watson etc...They are "#1 Most Popular Teacher on YT; feet together one leg", "#1 most popular teacher on YT; Speed Power" and "#1 most popular teacher on YT; Horse Shoes"; Let us know how you are doing on our Forum!
Hey Shawn thanks for the vids. This is a great explanation of hip movement. It's easy enough to make the backswing and then find the glass with the left handkerchief to get in a nice hitting position but I was wondering if you could elabrate on the left-cheek wipe to finish move. What muscles are you using to get out of there up to the finish? If I try to extend i.e. tuck butt under just after the strike my left cheek pulls off the wall. If I don't extend I finish very low left.
Have a look at the answer I posted for holyrocnroll; the videos listed explain how the squatting technique prepares the body to allow the arm-club unit to twirl to the target and gets you tons of room for them to swing under the shoulders and in front of the body; I used to do exactly what you do and you will see this on my old articles for Golf Tips Magazine from back in 2001; now my spine looks more like Hogan, Norman, Kenny Perry, Sam Snead...Easy to feel! Shawn
THE FIRST PART OF THE SWING,SUMMARY AND REVEIW PAGE 121,ORDER OF MOVEMENT= THE HANDS,ARMS AND SHOULDERS START THE CLUB BACK ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY,AS THE SHOULDERS TURN "THEY" START TO TURN THE HIPS--, IF THE LEFT LEG IS SET UP CORRECTLY,AND THE LEFT FOOT IS A QUATER TURN OF 90 DEGREES, TO THE LEFT, YOUR WEIGHT SHIFT WILL TURN THE HIPS BACK TO THE LEFT AUTOMATICALLY, THE BIT YOU GOT TO FIGURE OUT IS WOT IS THE BEST WAY TO SHIFT WITHOUT SLIDEING, DO GO WIPING YOUR ASS ON NO WINDOWS, THATS WEIRD
Hiya Shawn. - I think I'm beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel watched this video and a clip of Ben Hogan swing and now see perhaps where I've been going wrong in the start of the down swing. I've always started it with a feeling of pulling my arms down first rather than turning my hips first which automatically turns your shoulders & arms & club as a unit, before uncoiling the shoulders and then whipping through with the arms. Need to try this at the range tho and pratice it.

i'm a big fan of this cat's videos--i think they could benefit all golfers--at all levels! but it's funny what happens when you throw the word "hogan" in the title. the views jump up dramatically.
i'm actually planning on doing a series of vids where the words "jessica" "alba" "puppies" all show up in the title!
nice video, but late´st New PGA swing is a bit diffr. than what you say´s. Last weeks winner on PGA Tour in China, Italian Molinari have the new Swing.
What about his swing! It is more like the Stacj&Tiltswing i think. No hips move to the wright or back in bakswing, just rotate shoulders, almost 50% body weight on each leg in backswing.
Please take a look on Molinari´s swing and tell me later what You think of the NEW SWING ON TOUR"!
Of all the videos, books ,lessons and programs that I have watched over the last decade this video is by far the greatest. If a person watches and listens very closely then applies it to his or her swing their ball striking will improve greatly.I have done this my drives and iron shots are long and straight. I hit alot of golfballs and notice many people who do not move the body correctly. Thank you Thank you Shawn you are #1 hands down. Now only if I could putt.
Great video, hit some shots using the tips. It really felt great with the irons and the swing thought of wiping the glass really seems to resonate. Let me ask you this. This set up seems to work great with the irons where you need a descending blow, but will it also work with the driver? I seem to get the best results from the driver when I move back into my right side in a much more pronounced way and then really stay behind the ball to get the ascending blow at impact, does this make sense

This video has helped me more than any other video. ( And the 2 Pro instructors I paid) I was leading my downswing with the right hip moving out toward the ball, causing me to stand up losing spine angle. Resulting in high right shots, club getting stuck behind me causing the right hand to take over and the left wrist to cup at impact. Within two days I was playing my best golf in a long time. Thanks Shawn! I'm enjoying golf again.
Very helpful I'm going to practice 18 holes tomarrow morning with it. Hopefully it will fix my slice and shanks. I have a tournament conning up and I don't want any of those:)
"Shawn you are wrong" Starting the backswing with the body will only lead to a flat backswing with the clubshaft wrapped around the body. This makes it very difficult to square the club face thru impact.Although the analogy of the dog wagging the tail sounds good it does not hold water. Other great very accomplished instructors would also agree with me. I believe the club should be taken back with the arms and shoulders to waist high position then the hogan move starts.
@62mikes Come on Mike; stop your "I am right and you are wrong bull crap" and don't try to back up the pile of manure with your "other teachers who have not studied anatomy, physics, neurology, meditation for awareness and human evolution"; we are human structures (golf pro lesson learn your golf machine) and we all live on planet earth and we all are experts with gravity; "golf pro lesson ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2 and "golf pro lesson the insanity of golf"; have fun with your beliefs!
@clemshaw I know this is an old video but I found Mike's statement funny. Truly, there are not any "perfect" methods, however I think Shawn's ideas are obviously very sound. Backed up with lots of knowledge of different players and techniques. Also, Shawn starts with the whole body and he has what some would say is a more upright motion, not flat. Obviously if Shawn can make it work with the body then Mike's idea of the only result is quite flawed.
best description yet of Hogan wt shift...a lot of people describe as reverse wt shift, etc. (incorrectly)....I guess I would just define this a "proper" wt. shift and not just a power move.....for me the best way to feel this is to EXAGGERATE the feel of this and you really feel the torque of this - especially with driver - I'm 5'9" 155 and I'm hitting it past guys 6'2"...TRY IT!

I appreciate your lesson. Playing six years and this move finally gave me decent distance. Every club went up 10 to 15 yards instantly and the ball feels like it stays on my clubface for days. Thanks so much.
Great video, it's helping me remove my left arm chicken wing at impact. I used to hit a 7 iron 135 yds, now I can put it 170 with solid contact. That part I'm still ironing out though.
when you say the right side does'nt move, it looks like it moves laterally a bit. when i do it i keep my but and find it has to move laterally. the great thing i find is the club comes from the inside so natural. does this make sense??
@crimn Hogan does move his hips laterally before turning the left hip. Otherwise if he didn't he would be over the top. This is why you see the club drop so naturally in the slot as they call it. It is a slight move and I hope Shawn has a separate video to elaborate on this.
@juicyfruitzy Thank for the comment; also thanks to all the other comments below;
And yes, I have dozens of videos that explain this; "golf pro lesson downswing weightshift", "golf pro lesson allow the arms to swing", Golf Pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and one of my latest, "Golf Pro lesson ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2
@clemshaw For a long time I confused what Hogan explained as lateral slide then turning of the hips afterward.I was always slightly over the the top when doing it that way.I truly hope that you create a video outlining the difference btween a common misconception of the hip slide and what you just explained in this video.I know you touch on it in other vids but this is the heart of the golf swing & truly deserves a huge spotlight. Seeing this again is truly refreshing & thx 4 sharing it with us
@clemshaw How does "Hogan's Power Move" relate to the "squat" or fall into the left side? For anyone learning this, does it happen simultaneously? BTW best description and demonstration of hip action I have seen or read.
@451mnu The squat is in preparation to swing the arm-club unit towards a target; you will see a nice rendition in "golf pro lesson how to get more club speed and power" as well as "golf pro lesson feet together and one leg update" Shawn
@clemshaw Thanks for the reply. While arms are stretched at the top of BS, why is it anatomically difficult to get into the squat position? Seems it would be easy to crouch first and then bring the arm/club assembly in front of the chest. Instead of crouching I find my arms racing down and forward. Am I too arm & club conscious at this stage of the swing?
Good job. If I might add one thing that is to pivot properly meaning coil or load by engaging your large muscles in your back.
One of the most common mistake average golfer makes is when they try to load with their arms and tend to sway their hips.
Proper Pivot is absolutely critial in order to hit consistent golf shots. We use a training aid PivotPro that gives students an instant feedbackas to how to load properly against their right leg without swaying.
hey shawn im a 6 handycap and am having problmes with my weight transfer this video has really put it into perspective on how to make a proper weight shift, ive tried ball under my back foot drill and it didnt work, this drill is the first to work for me! but i am lackingdistancei n my woods i hit my driver 260 yrds but only hit my 5wood 200 yrds at the most. yet i can hit my 22 hybrid 210-215 help me please!
A great continuation to this video is "golf pro lesson downswing weightshift" and "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 2", then blend it into the swing with "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill"; Have fun! Shawn
amazingly good. Your right hip already made a lateral movement so that you can just leave it alone and return the right hip back to the new lateral position. We have been trying to make a lateral bump with the left hip and it caused the hip to be out of position by swaying. Thank you Shawn.
hey shawn! i am a 24 handicap, and usually have really consistent draw with my driver. but recently, i developed a consistent fade and lost 10 yards, every single drive. i have tried everything i usually do to hit a draw, and my father (4 hdcp) is baffled. any tips? thanks!
Have a look at "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift" video and perfect the feel of this drill; then have a look at "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 as well as "golf pro lesson hooks and slices" and you will get it all back; Shawn
Hi Shawn! I don't write here to ask you something. I just wanna thank you for what you do here on YouTube, that's awesome. You really help me to improve my game with your clips, actually you are my golf teacher! So thank you very much from France. ++
Shawn
hi shaun ive been playing golf for about 7 weeks how come one week i play good with my irons and the next week i play good with my driver my best score so far is 108 on a 73 par how do u think i can improve this
There are a couple of things you need to understand about the differences in length and how this will affect how gravity will track the arm-club unit around your body; see "Golf pro lesson set-up with all clubs" "Golf pro lesson swing plane" and Golf pro lesson modern driver part 1 and 2" and see the second half of part 2 for a great tip on how to fix this mid round; You will be learning on different levels for the rest of your life in this game...it just depends how deep you want to go! :)
Hi Shawn, what is the 'swinging aid' called that you're using in this video? I've seen versions of this 'club' but they're all weighted versions. Thanks.
It is a home made job...:) Get one of the training grips and then get a demo club from a 5$ barrel at your local shop; cut to 22 inches long and then you will need to add many layers of masking tape to build up the thickness of the shaft before installing the grip; so see a good club maker and he should not charge you more than 10$ to install; Shawn
Shawn, Excellent video! Your analysis implies an interesting result: a lot of the perceived lateral motion towards the target occurs after a fixed reference point (the right back pocket) has already been established at the transition. The lateral motion is a side effect of keeping the right pocket in contact with the mirror. In this way, it forces the move through to combine both rotation with a lateral move in one motion.
Yes you do spin the hips (to be exact, the left hip)....BUT, you have to keep the right hip in place (back) at the top of the backswing while you turn the left hip to the left (keeping your head behind the ball). OMG....absolutely brilliant Shawn!Something that was not quite clear in Hogan's book that Shawn has so expertly expained.
Hello Shawn, At th top of my backswin, my weight is on my left leg (Downswing weight shift video) , so how can my "right back pocket remain in place and force the left side back to the window" on the downswing? my question is..how can the right side aid in clearing the left hip when 80-90% of weight is on the left side at the top of the backswing. in other words, i get to the reverse K position befor clearing my left hip..please clarify. Your videos are phenomenal, do you ship the DVD to India?
Hi shawn, i do feel like i am straightening my right knee, cuz i dont feel the squat.. and hence unable to clear my left hip in the correct manner ?? But ,the weight at the top of my backswing is definitely on the left side. Thanks and pls ignore if i dont make much sense, your videos and instructions are priceless.
Hey Ranger golf; sorry for not getting back to you earlier; yes, we ship to India and the other videos you want to master are the "Golf Pro lesson feet together drill" then see "golf pro lesson catapult power", then see "golf pro lesson one leg swing no weightshift" and finally" golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review part 2" Enjoy! Shawn
Love your videos, however, for some reason, when you were demonstrating and pausing, I couldn't help thinking of Charles Barkley - maybe this should be called the Charles Barkley power move lol. Been trying it and it has added about 15 yards, and it only cost 1 window
Hi Clem, When you say that the "right hip remains in place" do you only mean depth?. It seems that your right cheek moves to the left (slighty few inches) when you start the down swing (about time 1.37- 1.41). Is this just depth perception? or is this a move to initiate the left hip turning back to the window? I Find it easier to move a bit more laterally after centralising effect of the right butt cheek during the backswing to clear the left hip. Is this ok?
On the ds, how do I move my left hip back without moving my right? Aren't they connected? When I do this, my right shoulder does not stay back, which is my problem. I keep my head back, but can't seem to come in from the inside.
Please see "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" for this one! Also, "golf pro lesson X-out the X-factor!" Thanks for the comment and responses guys! Shawn
Make sure you keep focused on the target! If you default to the ball, you will deliver the juice to the ground instead of the target! See "golf pro lesson eye ball" and "golf pro lesson how to repeat your practice swing" ; Thanks for the question! Shawn
Shawn, I think this video is appropriate for the problem I seem to be having??? I am a lefty and find myself/body moving into/toward the ball and weight out on my toes as I am coming down. This causes me to block/slice the ball to the left. Do you have any other suggestions or drills that might help prevent me from moving into the ball? Thanks
This one as well as the "golf pro lesson leverage power uphill" which is the way Kenny Perry learned to resolve the same issue you have; It has worked wonders for him as well as Scott Verplank!
If you want to exercise this on driving ranges you can use your golf bag as a wall. On the backswing slide your right pocket against your 3-wood in a bag. On the downswing, make sure the right pocket stays steady.
btw, this hip movement is like lifting a rocking chair at the front side of the rockers. Rockers will slide, but no visible lateral movement and the downswing is just letting the gravity rock the chair back to front.
When I make this move it feels like my head and right shoulder and dropping as the downswing begins - going under the shot. As this is different, I'm hoping it means I'm doing something right!
Also, do you feel keeping the right foot planted as long as possible helps with this move?
You Bet! See "golf pro lesson leverage uphill" for a great compliment to this! Right foot should stay down through impact and into the finish! As I said before, this move saved Kenny Perry's career as well as Scott Verplank! Shawn
hogan was a hooker spinning the left leg first only wrks if u hook the ball.lol u never talk about the uncocking of the wrists on the way dwn.power is the unhingeing of the club from 90 degrees to fully un cocked not from hips!!!!!! or lag ,lag doesnt increase power im sick of people saying the wrong thing!!!!
So how long have you been a teaching pro, rushey1? By the looks of the videos on your profile, you're another one of these young teenage jerks who already knows it all.
If you knew anything about how the body works in a golf swing, you would know that you don't need to worry about the wrists. Due to the force of the downswing, they will unhinge on their own without having to think about it. That's why ALL top teachers preach lag; the wrists naturally do what they need to.
Hey Shawn, great vid as usual, tried it felt strange but the 'squat' really gave me a solid 'planted' feeling. Btw has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Will Ferrel the actor.
you're better off trying to wipe the pane of glass clean than wipe your butt along a mirror behind you ... do what he says and rotation axis too much between the hip joints, instead of favoring the lead one
Shawn, Tried this & pulled a rt side Butt muscle. On a positive note this drill has really helped.
? If your rt hip stays back & you rotate the left, this would move your whole pelvis farther away from the ball than at address. Is this true? Can you expand on this
Awesome observation!! Yes it is and this helps counter balance the centrifugal pull of the arms swinging in front of the body; the mirror drill is to expand of the chair drill you have seen with other teachers; this drill is great for golfers who need to make some room in front of them through impact; see "golf pro lesson downswing weightshift" and "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 as an expansion to this video; Great comment and very astute observation once again; thanks! Shawn
This is the video that I always come back to when I'm having problems. I have a tendency to "Early Extend" when I try to hit the ball hard. If I keep my butt back on the window I maintain my posture and hit the ball very good. Is there a training aid that I can use on the range to accomplish this? Perhaps hitting against a PVC pipe, chair etc? Thanks again Shawn...
Yes; you could use a chair; it would start to tip over as your right hip slides around back and then try to make it tip over as you return the left hip back to it; this could be a good video!:)
Superb video. I have really been struggling with initiating my downswing with and getting the correct sequencing of weight transfer and hip rotation. This is the best video I've seen on explaining this move. I love the fact you keep it simple! The beauty is this drill can be done at home. Thanks Shawn.
once again, great stuff. your explanation is so clear that even people like me with limited talent in golf could understand. I like the way you repeat the important key words and phrases.
Shawn, I think this is the key the I have been looking for for years. Looking back at my swing, I see that I was/am too right side dominant. I was rotating my right hip in instead of left hip back to initiate the downswing. Needless to say, lots of hosel shots resulted from this. Its like the left hip going back is my trigger. Everything else just happens on its own if I return that left hip "back to the wall". I was even toeing some shots which I NEVER do! Thanks so much for this.
Hi again Shawn, i just went to the range and started preturning my right hip and moving it toward the target before my backswing and started hitting it real good. I once heard Hogan used a preturn, what do you think is going on? yeah or nay?
Thanks Shawn for the video. I have always tried to model my swing after Hogan after reading his book, but could never get the sequence down with the lower body. What this does for me is keep my head back and allow me to release the club correctly. Great video, went after and hit balls on the range and had my best practice session ever. Thanks again
Yeah man! See also " golf pro lesson downswing weightshift" which is another version of this video; also "golf Pro Lesson 2008 golf swing review part 2";
I'm in my second year of driving range practice and hope 2 get out 2 a golf course this summer. I found this vid a few weeks ago and finally got 2 try it out at the range recently, and although it did help when i accidentally do it correctly, i find myself pushing the ball 2 the right. I'm guessing its the spin im putting on the ball but im hitting about 30 yards to the right. Any advice? BTW, great videos and thanks for the help. Ignore the negative ppl, they have nothing better to do.
Thanks Taffykill! Golf is a game of opposites; see the "Golf Pro lesson Hooks and slices" and then "Golf Pro Lesson be a solid Ball striker" and "Golf Pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3; then see the titles I gave to meanswings above you;
great drill... feels weird but great. general question to send out there regarding driving ranges (especially shawn if you're out there)... mats? i've been in my home working on just drills like these but am reluctant to try them out at the range b/c i'm afraid the mats are not going to give me a true marker of progress. the lessons you give i would think would work on either grass or the mats but... any comments would be welcome!
Hey skwon; mats are ok since you can always feel whether or not you hit the mat before the ball; it also prevents you from getting too steep on the ball; I used to take very deep divots and after hitting on mats for a couple winters, it allowed me to shallow out the swing and has never hampered my on course performances; rock on! Shawn
This is great. My local pro just went over this with me yesterday and showed me some Hogan videos. This really clarifies and reinforces what he was talking about. Thanks!
grixxly, first look at Bubba Watsons Swing. his hip turn is enourmous.
I am on the other side of the learning hump with this new swing. What was astonishing and down right startling was that when I started to get this totally in sync, I would swing effortlessly and simply crush the ball. It was so startling that I almost jumped out of my shoes the first few times that happened since my brain could not compute such an effortless swing and the loud crack of impact.
Could this be more wrong? Turning your right hip that much rolls the weight to the outside and doesn't allow for the weight to stay on the inside of the right leg at the top of the backswing... Reading Hogan once doesn't teach Hogan's swing...
If you look at all the other 148 videos I have including the "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" you would see that I am all about balance and that the comment you made absolutely holds no water; try to stick to more productive things as you obviously know nothing about me; Shawn
This is a fantastic video on leg action during the swing. I currently play of 3 and have been changing my swing this winter based on the way hogan swung the club. The one part of his swing that ive found the most difficult was his leg action, im just back from the range and have already found tremendous improvement in my ball striking and I really feel like ive finally got all the pieces. Thank you so much for creating such a simple way of demonstrating the correct leg action in the swing!
I thought this was because i was subconciously still coming forward on the downswing to get into hitting position. I've being trying everything to stop it, even putting my weight well forward at address (Makes me feel unbalanced and "Reaching"). I think this vid could be the answer. I'm pretty sure my right hip could be coming forward on the downswing. Does this sound like a likely cause? I'll practice "the move" tomorrow. Thanks in advance!
Have a look at my "downswing Weightshift" video as well as the "timing and tempo update" and the "bilateral golf swing" videos...Get yourself braced solidly before you swing the arms through the ball and to the target (and not at the ball right?)
Hi Shawn great stuff again. A pro recently corrected my posture. My spine angle was too upright but its now a lot better. This however has resulted in me hitting shanks...
Don't worry about this; the main thing is to get the momentum going towards the target and to not be in the way!! See the response I have below "Crimn";
i just watched the weightshift on the downswing and you say to fall on your left heel from the back not the front. after watching this it seems opposite?? what is the difference between what you say here and the downswing weightshift?? maybe my comment doesn't make sense?
This video is meant for you to get the feel awareness of a centered turn and of holding your ground in the downswing to force the left side back and out of the way; it does not do a 100% complete job and this is why I have "Downswing Weightshift" and "2008 Golf swing review part 1 and 2", "Perpetual Motion drill" and finally "Tempo and Timing update" for putting a rhythm into the swing so you forget to try to hit the positions...Trying fails! Awareness Cures! Shawn
r people moving away from hogan's style vis a vis all the movement in the lower body?the legs driving towards the target? i've seen other instructors saying the 'New' approach isn't as hard on body, hips ,knees etc. not that i'm disputing hogan's beautiful pane of glass etc. i've just re-torn my miniscus so many darn times...
You have to see my "golf Pro Lesson Learn your Golf Machine" video! The see the "Golf Pro Lesson Leg and Footwork" video and many others that will show you that if you stay stacked through the joints properly you will totally minimize the wear and tear on the body;
by shifting to the left, we will catch the ball first then make the divot. that ok for iron.
but how about the driver? i found out to hit more tee and the ball will balloon up because i will always hit with the upper area of club face. how you solve this?
In the April, 1978, issue of Golf Magazine, Jimmy Demaret analyzed Hogan's swing and notes "... Everyone should attempt to drive through with the right leg, just as Ben does. I know that when I lay off golf a long time and then go out and hit balls for an hour, I am more tired in my right leg than anywhere else. That's where the power comes from."
Could you elaborate on that? What does he mean "drive through with the right leg?"
I heard from many people that it is a misconception that Hogan drove through the ball with his right leg. Hogan had a bad right leg, in contrast, his left leg was very strong. That is why he would slide/sit over his left hip before that start of the down swing. His left leg was his foundation for hitting through the ball. Hope this helps clear things up.
Thanks a ton, 1ton. I tried but concluded you can't drive with the right leg if you are braced against the left. But while experimenting, I did get a new feeling of being plugged into the ground (in both legs) at the transition and beginning of the downswing that seemed to be helpful with balance. I think it is that infamous squat move. But that did not have much to do with 'pushing through impact' with right leg.
1tontomato is right on; especially after Hogan's accident that had his pelvis and legs badly broken, he used the right side as leverage to pull himself into the left side which is a visual illusion of firing off the right; all you need to do is look at the separation of the knees in the downswing...if he were pushing with the right the knees would be close together instead of getting wider like Sam Snead and Moe Norman...
Thanks Shawn, and see my reply to 1tontomato, below. Come to think of it, in his "5 lessons" he advocates bowing the right knee in at address because it was going to end up bowed in at impact, so do it at address to eliminate one moving part during the swing. He wouldn't say that if he was going to use that right knee for power. But it does work if he is going to support the rearward momentum of his backswing with it.
Should I be falling into my left side at the top of the backswing and then rotating my hips towards the target? It feels a bit fragmented. When using the Hogan power move, I move my right hip back in the backswing then the left hip forward on the downswing which seems to move my weight forward and seems less fragmented as if I am not waiting to plant me left foot.
Does this make sense!
The downswing weight shift fall into the left side
Yes! Very good! Downswing weightshift is the evolution of the hogan power move and drill and the final video of this year, "2008 Golf swing review", has the rest of the info;
I assume that since the right butt cheek is moving "behind " its original set up position that it is exerting some pressure on the mirror? If so, then when the left butt cheek matches up onto the mirror that there is likely some posteriorly oriented pressure on the mirror? .....which then leads to some downward motion of the head?? right??....and this provides the "pocket" or space for the arms to drop into......effectively the "squat"...true I hope?? Lines I drew suggested this effect.
I have read the 5 fundanmentals 20 times at least, and Shaun just explained the most important point of the downswing. With the move Shaun shows above is how the lower body and the hips starts the down swing! Hogan said the most important part of the down swing was starting the swing w/ the lower body and the hips to drop the shoulders, arms and club (in that order) into a position to strike the ball. It can only generate the instide to out swing we all desire. great work Shaun. many props!!

Thanks so much Shawn. Rod, from Sydney Australia.

Basically, I see some parallels...is the basis of your teaching on stack and tilt?
yannikin 5 months ago
Surely you should start slightly away from wall when you set up and turn your right hip back until it touches so you get depth of turn in the backswing. If you do the move as you demonstrated then you'll be moving in toward the ball, against the resistance of the wall, as your hips turn back.

This guy is a pure athlete based on what I've seen in his vids. Anyone thinking that they can replicate what Shawn does, they should start with hitting the gym for a year straight before they even touch a club, and then count on practicing every day for two years. And then you'll still be halfway there.

Hi Shawn,
Great Video, only just in the last month figured out about keeping my head behind the ball.
Thanks.

HI Shawn,
Just a quick question, I'm having trouble incorporating this move with the move from the video Best Downswing Weightshift; #1. I'm just curious does the move where you step on your left foot happen to transfer the weight happen simultaneously with the move of forcing your left side back to the window? I seem to struggle trying to incorporate both these moves and any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

this drill is good to eliminate the reverse pivot problem which he unfortunatly does not touch much on.

Need to try this at the range tho and pratice it.

nice video, but late´st New PGA swing is a bit diffr. than what you say´s. Last weeks winner on PGA Tour in China, Italian Molinari have the new Swing.
What about his swing! It is more like the Stacj&Tiltswing i think. No hips move to the wright or back in bakswing, just rotate shoulders, almost 50% body weight on each leg in backswing.
Please take a look on Molinari´s swing and tell me later what You think of the NEW SWING ON TOUR"!
take care,

Obviously if Shawn can make it work with the body then Mike's idea of the only result is quite flawed.

crimn 1 year ago
@crimn Hogan does move his hips laterally before turning the left hip. Otherwise if he didn't he would be over the top. This is why you see the club drop so naturally in the slot as they call it. It is a slight move and I hope Shawn has a separate video to elaborate on this.

In this way, it forces the move through to combine both rotation with a lateral move in one motion.
bunkerputt 2 years ago
Yes you do spin the hips (to be exact, the left hip)....BUT, you have to keep the right hip in place (back) at the top of the backswing while you turn the left hip to the left (keeping your head behind the ball). OMG....absolutely brilliant Shawn!Something that was not quite clear in Hogan's book that Shawn has so expertly expained.

Love your videos, however, for some reason, when you were demonstrating and pausing, I couldn't help thinking of Charles Barkley - maybe this should be called the Charles Barkley power move lol. Been trying it and it has added about 15 yards, and it only cost 1 window
therightstuff360 2 years ago
Hi Clem, When you say that the "right hip remains in place" do you only mean depth?. It seems that your right cheek moves to the left (slighty few inches) when you start the down swing (about time 1.37- 1.41). Is this just depth perception? or is this a move to initiate the left hip turning back to the window? I Find it easier to move a bit more laterally after centralising effect of the right butt cheek during the backswing to clear the left hip. Is this ok?
coopersx19 2 years ago
On the ds, how do I move my left hip back without moving my right? Aren't they connected? When I do this, my right shoulder does not stay back, which is my problem. I keep my head back, but can't seem to come in from the inside.

I agree with rands76.
However, I thought we supposed to create tension between the shoulder and the hip during the back swing.

Thanks
tsrlaw1 2 years ago
This one as well as the "golf pro lesson leverage power uphill" which is the way Kenny Perry learned to resolve the same issue you have; It has worked wonders for him as well as Scott Verplank!
Shawn
clemshaw 2 years ago
If you want to exercise this on driving ranges you can use your golf bag as a wall. On the backswing slide your right pocket against your 3-wood in a bag. On the downswing, make sure the right pocket stays steady.
btw, this hip movement is like lifting a rocking chair at the front side of the rockers. Rockers will slide, but no visible lateral movement and the downswing is just letting the gravity rock the chair back to front.

Great video Shawn!
When I make this move it feels like my head and right shoulder and dropping as the downswing begins - going under the shot. As this is different, I'm hoping it means I'm doing something right!
Also, do you feel keeping the right foot planted as long as possible helps with this move?
maxpassed 2 years ago
You Bet! See "golf pro lesson leverage uphill" for a great compliment to this! Right foot should stay down through impact and into the finish! As I said before, this move saved Kenny Perry's career as well as Scott Verplank! Shawn

hogan was a hooker spinning the left leg first only wrks if u hook the ball.lol u never talk about the uncocking of the wrists on the way dwn.power is the unhingeing of the club from 90 degrees to fully un cocked not from hips!!!!!! or lag ,lag doesnt increase power im sick of people saying the wrong thing!!!!
rushey1 2 years ago
So how long have you been a teaching pro, rushey1? By the looks of the videos on your profile, you're another one of these young teenage jerks who already knows it all.
If you knew anything about how the body works in a golf swing, you would know that you don't need to worry about the wrists. Due to the force of the downswing, they will unhinge on their own without having to think about it. That's why ALL top teachers preach lag; the wrists naturally do what they need to.

Hey Shawn, great vid as usual, tried it felt strange but the 'squat' really gave me a solid 'planted' feeling. Btw has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Will Ferrel the actor.

you're better off trying to wipe the pane of glass clean than wipe your butt along a mirror behind you ... do what he says and rotation axis too much between the hip joints, instead of favoring the lead one
fredwadegolf 2 years ago
Shawn, Tried this & pulled a rt side Butt muscle. On a positive note this drill has really helped.
? If your rt hip stays back & you rotate the left, this would move your whole pelvis farther away from the ball than at address. Is this true? Can you expand on this
NHOJ1111111 2 years ago

Thanks again Shawn...
gomboman 2 years ago
Yes; you could use a chair; it would start to tip over as your right hip slides around back and then try to make it tip over as you return the left hip back to it; this could be a good video!:)
Stay tuned! Shawn

Superb video. I have really been struggling with initiating my downswing with and getting the correct sequencing of weight transfer and hip rotation. This is the best video I've seen on explaining this move. I love the fact you keep it simple! The beauty is this drill can be done at home. Thanks Shawn.

Any advice? BTW, great videos and thanks for the help. great drill... feels weird but great. general question to send out there regarding driving ranges (especially shawn if you're out there)... mats? i've been in my home working on just drills like these but am reluctant to try them out at the range b/c i'm afraid the mats are not going to give me a true marker of progress. the lessons you give i would think would work on either grass or the mats but... any comments would be welcome!
skwon11 2 years ago
Hey skwon; mats are ok since you can always feel whether or not you hit the mat before the ball; it also prevents you from getting too steep on the ball; I used to take very deep divots and after hitting on mats for a couple winters, it allowed me to shallow out the swing and has never hampered my on course performances; rock on! grixxly, first look at Bubba Watsons Swing. his hip turn is enourmous.
I am on the other side of the learning hump with this new swing. What was astonishing and down right startling was that when I started to get this totally in sync, I would swing effortlessly and simply crush the ball. It was so startling that I almost jumped out of my shoes the first few times that happened since my brain could not compute such an effortless swing and the loud crack of impact.
bluejfk 2 years ago
Could this be more wrong? Turning your right hip that much rolls the weight to the outside and doesn't allow for the weight to stay on the inside of the right leg at the top of the backswing... Reading Hogan once doesn't teach Hogan's swing...
Grixxly 2 years ago
If you look at all the other 148 videos I have including the "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" you would see that I am all about balance and that the comment you made absolutely holds no water; try to stick to more productive things as you obviously know nothing about me; Shawn

This is a fantastic video on leg action during the swing. I currently play of 3 and have been changing my swing this winter based on the way hogan swung the club. The one part of his swing that ive found the most difficult was his leg action, im just back from the range and have already found tremendous improvement in my ball striking and I really feel like ive finally got all the pieces. Thank you so much for creating such a simple way of demonstrating the correct leg action in the swing!
thenegotiator3 2 years ago

This however has resulted in me hitting shanks...
thelukos 2 years ago
Don't worry about this; the main thing is to get the momentum going towards the target and to not be in the way!! See the response I have below "Crimn";
Thanks for the question! Shawn
clemshaw 2 years ago
i just watched the weightshift on the downswing and you say to fall on your left heel from the back not the front. after watching this it seems opposite?? what is the difference between what you say here and the downswing weightshift?? maybe my comment doesn't make sense?
crimn 3 years ago
Great question!
Shawn
clemshaw 2 years ago
r people moving away from hogan's style vis a vis all the movement in the lower body?the legs driving towards the target? i've seen other instructors saying the 'New' approach isn't as hard on body, hips ,knees etc. not that i'm disputing hogan's beautiful pane of glass etc. i've just re-torn my miniscus so many darn times...

by shifting to the left, we will catch the ball first then make the divot. that ok for iron.
but how about the driver? i found out to hit more tee and the ball will balloon up because i will always hit with the upper area of club face. how you solve this?

This is a great drill! Seeing myself on video I noticed how my butt was coming in. This drill will definitely help overcome that.
jcr1964 3 years ago
Hi guy;
What does he mean "drive through with the right leg?"
honketyhank 3 years ago
I heard from many people that it is a misconception that Hogan drove through the ball with his right leg. Hogan had a bad right leg, in contrast, his left leg was very strong. That is why he would slide/sit over his left hip before that start of the down swing. His left leg was his foundation for hitting through the ball. Hope this helps clear things up.
1tontomato 3 years ago
Thanks a ton, 1ton. I tried but concluded you can't drive with the right leg if you are braced against the left. But while experimenting, I did get a new feeling of being plugged into the ground (in both legs) at the transition and beginning of the downswing that seemed to be helpful with balance. I think it is that infamous squat move. But that did not have much to do with 'pushing through impact' with right leg.
honketyhank 3 years ago
1tontomato is right on; especially after Hogan's accident that had his pelvis and legs badly broken, he used the right side as leverage to pull himself into the left side which is a visual illusion of firing off the right; all you need to do is look at the separation of the knees in the downswing...if he were pushing with the right the knees would be close together instead of getting wider like Sam Snead and Moe Norman...
Shawn
clemshaw 3 years ago
Thanks Shawn, and see my reply to 1tontomato, below. Come to think of it, in his "5 lessons" he advocates bowing the right knee in at address because it was going to end up bowed in at impact, so do it at address to eliminate one moving part during the swing. He wouldn't say that if he was going to use that right knee for power. But it does work if he is going to support the rearward momentum of his backswing with it.
honketyhank 3 years ago
Hi Shawn
Should I be falling into my left side at the top of the backswing and then rotating my hips towards the target? It feels a bit fragmented. When using the Hogan power move, I move my right hip back in the backswing then the left hip forward on the downswing which seems to move my weight forward and seems less fragmented as if I am not waiting to plant me left foot.
Does this make sense!
The downswing weight shift fall into the left side
jkduser 3 years ago
Yes! Very good! Downswing weightshift is the evolution of the hogan power move and drill and the final video of this year, "2008 Golf swing review", has the rest of the info;

jochooi 3 years ago
I assume that since the right butt cheek is moving "behind " its original set up position that it is exerting some pressure on the mirror? If so, then when the left butt cheek matches up onto the mirror that there is likely some posteriorly oriented pressure on the mirror? .....which then leads to some downward motion of the head?? right??....and this provides the "pocket" or space for the arms to drop into......effectively the "squat"...true I hope?? Lines I drew suggested this effect.
vjwmd 3 years ago
I have read the 5 fundanmentals 20 times at least, and Shaun just explained the most important point of the downswing. With the move Shaun shows above is how the lower body and the hips starts the down swing! Hogan said the most important part of the down swing was starting the swing w/ the lower body and the hips to drop the shoulders, arms and club (in that order) into a position to strike the ball. It can only generate the instide to out swing we all desire. great work Shaun. many props!!
