@dumpster3403 I grew up in the Detroit area in the 50's & 60's....This brings back memories of my running home from school at lunch time to have lunch with Soupy! White Fang and Black Tooth were my favorites but I've been unable to find a clip with Willie the Worm who lived in a tiny trailer on Soupy's table. He would poke his head, (someone's finger), out of his trailer window, sneeze and say, "I'd like to say Happy Birthday, to Bobby, Jimmy, Sue and Lisa"....Thanks for the memories.
hello all, high school history teacher, was teaching about the evolution of TV and the different shows that came about in each decade, i talked about soupy sales, and showed some videos and then talked about the banana spilts and then my show i grew up with Wallace and Ladmo, then entire class was laughing and having a great time. one student raied his hand and said,"we got shit for tv now" not one student disagreed i was proud to teach the class this and other great shows. take care all.

I RAN FROM SCHOOL TO CATCH SOUPY SALES BACK IN THE 60S...WAS A KID OF 8 YEARS OLD WATCH HIM ON BLACK &WHITE PHILCO T.V. THAT WAS THE MAKE OF THE T.V.WE HAD BACK IN THE DAY NO COLOR T.V THEN WOW !!! R.I.P. SOUPY U ALWAYS MADE ME LAUGH AS A KID THESES CLIPS BRING BACK THOSES DAYS
oh man my dad used to do this all the time when I was little I thought it was so funny...oh daddy I miss you so much, things like this make me wish you were still here </3
Soupy Sales, the coolest guy ever. Growing up in Detroit in the 50's, he his well remembered. Same in the world as in the studio. Had a jokefest with him one early evening as the boys from Visitation High School were rolling down the John Lodge freeway on the way to the Fisher Theater. We spot Soupy in a Lincoln Continental in the lane next to ours. He rolls his front windows down, acknowledges us and starts clowning and going through his 12 O 'Clock Comics routines. It's a riot. Love you. RIP.
After he was suspended from air for a few times, the shows were recorded on tape. I know that some of the tapes were never erased and were taken home by one of the video tape operators, so a lot of the shows are still around. I wish the guy would just return them to be enjoyed again.
I felt very privileged to have been in the studio a few times when the show was on the air. My father used to do the sound effects right on the studio floor. I was even mentioned on air a few times. One of my best memories is when Soupy had removed the blanks from the gun that was used for the sound when Soupy was hit in the face with a pie. When the gun just clicked then crew broke out laughing. I still remember most of the crew and how Soupy interacted with them.
@rty1955 Sir, it is a privilege to have your posts and commentary on this site. Like so many people who've shared their experiences here... Soupy was a large part of my childhood. I can't imagine what a wonderful time you must've had actually being in the studio during production. Best regards... D.
@dumpster3403 I enjoyed the times I went into the studios. I was fascinated with broadcast. When I was 10 a camera operator placed me behind the camera during a taping of "Romper Room" I was petrified when the red light on the camera went on in the viewfinder and when the director asked me something on the headset I didn't answer because I thought I would make too much sound in the studio.
@rty1955 Your dad was a dude! i REMEMBER WHEN A NUDE WOMAN WAS KNOCKING AT THE DOOR AND HE ANSWERED IT AND THE STAGE CREW WENT BERSERK! he got in trouble for telling the children to send the little pieces of paper with the faces on them from their dad's wallet and send them in to him. He got in trouble for that but he was so cool!!
@mikenelli57 He also said, "me and my wife love to play baseball. I kiss her between the strikes, and she kisses me between the balls". And, "my wife doesn't make a very good cherry pie, but she sure can make my banana cream". The paper with the faces on it should be sent to me", got his show cancelled! Too phunny were his facial expressions! I miss the "Soupman"!!!
@mikenelli57 The only thing soupy genuinly said was the "little bits of green paper", everything else is urban legend. He says this himself on another youtube video.
I've been a Soupy Sales fan since his show started in 1962. One thing I am dying to find out is who was the crew member who had that deep loud laugh at the 2:00 and 2:20 time in this video. That guy's laugh cracks me up every time I here him.
I don't think I ever missed an episode of "Lunch with Soupy Sales" as a kid! I just loved it. What I remember most about White Fang, though, was no matter what, at the end of his "speaking" back to Soupy, he always ended with, what sounded most like (but in his inimitable voice) "Uh.....Well" (I can't find a way to spell this phonectically!) & always ended with what sounded like "Bleh-Oh-Deu!" (I still continue to imitate White & Black Fang & can still do the Soupy Shuffle and I'm 61!)..Lyneee
there is a great Soupy Sales channel here that will have to stop uploading videos if it doesn't get more subscribers. Tons of episodes. So if you love Soupy please subscribe! (I'm not affiliated, I just dont' want to see the channel go)
Please type in the dots/slash where shown: tiny(dot)cc(forward slash)mzghk
Ha Ha! I loved this guy even if the Fang dog things kinda scared me! My parents always seemed like they suspected Soupy of being a little subversive somehow. Great memories!
Even when the jokes were bad the show would still put me into spasms. It was their mannerisms and their execution that was pure genius. And I'm probably not even analyzing it correctly. Thats why the show was really funny. You can't figure it out. It was just hysterical. The way White Fang screams at 1:53 reminds me of Howlin Wolf's blues growls that make your hair stand on end.
@tom6612 It was because somehow - in a way you couldn't really express - you knew the whole show was deliciously subversive. You sensed there was some really cool inside joke somewhere and you either got it or you didn't and if you didn't then the show wasn't funny at all. It was audaciously adult humour in a child's package and, as children we knew that and relished in it.
@upquist1 --- Yes upquist. You definitely hit on something with that point about the show being subversive. The other big draw was the music. Soupy was a jazz aficionado so the tunes were top notch. But White Fangs voice was just pure genius. He could read the phone book and it would be interesting.
My God those days were terrible....you had to get up off the couch to change the channel. But I didn't have to change it if Soupy was on....loved the guy.
I love this clip. I remember watching Soupy when I was a kid. Still remember the Soupy Shuffle, too! Glad we have YouTube so we can still watch this icon of American TV!
Al Kelly was the master of Double Talk. He would show up on Carson's Tonight Show as some kind of "expert". He would then go on for about 5 minutes and completely befuddle the audience throwing in just enough real words to almost make sense. It was hilarious. Kelly a little guy, maybe 5' 1" or 2" and also seemed to have no lower teeth. So his physical appearence was also a comedic advantage. He was on just often enough to stay fresh.
Why isn't there any skits with Black Tooth on youtube? I remember White Fang and Black tooth always on Soupy's show together. Next to Bugs Bunny this was the best entertainment for a kid to grow up on.
This was our after school entertainment , 1960's style. High tech for those years were things like a record player , Transistor radio or a tape recorder. Soupy was cool in those years.
Fun part of being a kid in the 50's was seeing ya on the old black and white tv set....Loved your Soupy Sales shuffle(slide dance)....Thanks for the fun...RIP Soupy
There was an incident where Soupy supposedly flipped the bird to audience (live) Held up hand started eliminating fingers as he said this is for th producer, this for the director this for mommy and daddy, and this is for you.
If you check Wikipedia...he never did anything derogatory. Just Rumors. Kids would be busted telling a dirty joke and blame it on Soupy. RIP...you are a True Comic Genius Soupy
Funny stuff! Soupy was ahead of the game in these days. We rushed home from school to watch and laughed together the next day. Sad that he is gone but he left many terrific memories!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Not trying to be offensive.... Soupey sales was a guy? When we was serching this we was sure it was a girl and my sister made a lesbian song up about her/him.
Then it was a guy dancing with a puppet i got up and started lafing and bannging my head on the wall :D
"Sales died on October 22, 2009, at the age of 83, at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York. Sales had a history of health problems, and he was under hospice care for a week prior to his death. According to writer/columnist Mark Evanier, comedian Tim Powers reported that a fan left a cream pie on Sales' Hollywood Walk of Fame star." (Wikipedia)
He will be missed, enjoyed his shows when I was a kid.
Soupy and Frank Nastasi are back together again, this time forever. Their "shtick" will be happily received in the Hereafter as good, clean, honest, humor, which brings a smile to my face to this day. A comedian does not ever have to push acceptable limits to make someone laugh. All that is required is to be sufficiently talented to elevate average material to greatness.
When I was a kid I really hated this show. It didn't make any sense to me at all. Only decades later did I have any interest in it.
What I learned for the experience was that just because I didn't get something didn't mean there was nothing to get. So good on you, Soupy - you crazy ad-libbing lunatic genius.
Is Soupy still dead? Oh, thank goodness. I had a nightmare he was still alive. He taught me to steal from my mom's purse when I was five years old. Enjoy the lake of fire, Soupy.
Fuck you and your mom's purse. And get your story straight: where you five or were you six when you started your life of crime? Bet you can't remember, asshole!
He gave those of us who were growing up in that era, being groomed to conform, conform, conform, some blessed relief. Burlesque for kids - what a concept. I have such fond memories of his show - does anyone else remember Pafalafaka? RIP Soupy, and thanks for the laughs.
I sent away for that single!!!! I wish my kids had someone like Soupy to watch. Having had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago, he was kind and selfless. Peace Mr. Sales and thanks again.
I don't get it. All these brainwashed people in love with Soupy. The guy never made me laugh, ever. With only a few channels back then, how could he not be a hit? Fuck you, Soupy. You sucked.
....and you have a you tube page with 7 subscribers...hummm ...Soupy made some people happy....which is more than your parents did when they imposed little you on the rest of us. Making some one smile is a lot more valuable than your tired efforts to diminish this kind man's memory.
Forgive yourself and the rest of us...and go to a sader page where you thrive.
I will always love you Soupy and White Fang, Forever in my heart cracked my ass up since I was 13. My condolences to your family and respect to a wonderfull, creative, loving, and creative man of this time: from a kid in Miami I loved him. He was ONE OF A KIND.
I love reading all of your warm, wonderful comments. I grew up with Soupy, and didn't know it then, but I loved him dearly.
He was the first to corral and bring in the subtle "behind the scenes" feeling by looking off camera, getting laughter and commentary from the "peanut gallery", He had no equal.
We loved you, Soupy. Rest well. And teach them all The Mouse up there.
It doesn't matter what a foul ball thought about Milton........he was the Soup man...just l;ook at 'em he was so cool!
Rest well soupy ....you knew we loved you. Thanks for the words of wisdom, lunch and bringing us White Fang , Black Tooth, Peaches.. Pookie....and Reeeba Baby!
Soupy had a special magic that people of all ages were attracted to. He was warm and gentle and smart and funny, On all the times was I lucky enough to see him in person, he always had time for his fans. The world lost a gentle soul, and heaven is a happier place!!
Loved him. In a very remote way - he reminds me of Gerard Butler. Of all people! Is it something in his eyes? Don't understand it - but I see it. Lol! RIP, SS!!! xo
I remember seeing him in Palisaides Amusement Park when I was 8 or 9 yrs old,, and he had thousands of kids(me included) on their feet doing the Mouse,, RIP Soupy,, another Icon of my childhood gone
Amen my friend, he was a big part of my childhood. He made being a kid even more fun. And " show me a guy who draws lines on the water & I'll show you an ocean liner". RIP Soup......
Yes, Yes, I agree. I lived in NY at that time, Went to WNEW Ch.5 everyday during the summer, and watched Soupy's show live in the studio. I was part of the "gang". Sandy Becker was at the same studio, and also very friendly to us.
Thank you Soupy for all the fun and laughs. Shall we all do a group Soupy Sales Shuffle? You made us SOOO Happy! My heart ackes and I miss you. Be free and enjoy the new BIG SHOW.
He was once suspended for a week after telling his legion of tiny listeners to empty their mothers' purse and mail him all the pieces of green paper bearing pictures of the presidents.
The song at the beginning is... Mumbles by Carl Peterson. Soupy was a shining star when I was just a little kid.... NOW, he will forever be a shining star in the heavens. RIP Soupy Sales

There was an incident where Soupy supposedly flipped the bird to audience (live) Held up hand started eliminating fingers as he said this is for th producer, this for the director this for mommy and daddy, and this is for you.
songbuff61 2 years ago
If you check Wikipedia...he never did anything derogatory. Just Rumors. Kids would be busted telling a dirty joke and blame it on Soupy. RIP...you are a True Comic Genius Soupy

Funny stuff! Soupy was ahead of the game in these days. We rushed home from school to watch and laughed together the next day. Sad that he is gone but he left many terrific memories!
White Fang is hilarious!!!!

Not trying to be offensive.... Soupey sales was a guy? When we was serching this we was sure it was a girl and my sister made a lesbian song up about her/him.
Then it was a guy dancing with a puppet i got up and started lafing and bannging my head on the wall :D
I heard he die?
What a shame.... RIP

Soupy Sales was the real deal.
jimdevo 2 years ago

StevePalRP 2 years ago
When I was a kid I really hated this show. It didn't make any sense to me at all. Only decades later did I have any interest in it.
What I learned for the experience was that just because I didn't get something didn't mean there was nothing to get. So good on you, Soupy - you crazy ad-libbing lunatic genius.

Is Soupy still dead? Oh, thank goodness. I had a nightmare he was still alive. He taught me to steal from my mom's purse when I was five years old. Enjoy the lake of fire, Soupy.

You mean EVEN THIS becomes an opportunity for a classic YT flaming event?
Geez.
We all had the grandma who told us "if you can't say something good then don't say anything at all"...
Thank God she never had the internet and YT, eh?

Negative comments suggest people are just plain jealous.
Soupy has a star on the sidewalk bet you don't or you wouldn't be knocking one who does.

You sucked.

what made soupy so funny was there was no scripts it was all ad-lib
689321546 2 years ago 2
....and you have a you tube page with 7 subscribers...hummm ...Soupy made some people happy....which is more than your parents did when they imposed little you on the rest of us.

Please stop all the negative comments.
To all of us who grew up in the 60's in the metropolitan NY area, Soupy was the best. Simply put - he made us laugh.
So did so many other great children's entertainers - Sonny Fox, Sandy Becker and of course the great Chuck McCann.
In the past couple of days, everyone I have spoken to from my generation is very sad. End of an era.
Thanks Soupy
And remember: "People who live in glass houses should dress in the basement."

Amen my friend, he was a big part of my childhood. He made being a kid even more fun. And " show me a guy who draws lines on the water & I'll show you an ocean liner". RIP Soup......
febbster 2 years ago
Yes, Yes, I agree. I lived in NY at that time, Went to WNEW Ch.5 everyday during the summer, and watched Soupy's show live in the studio. I was part of the "gang". Sandy Becker was at the same studio, and also very friendly to us.
Soupy was the greatest. I will miss him
always!!
