The very first Windows was Windows 1.0, second was Windows 2.0, third Windows 3.0. Following Windows 3.0 was Windows NT which was code versioned as Windows 3.1. Windows 95, Windows 98, 98 SE and Windows Millennium each shipped as 4.0. Windows 2000 code was 5.0 and Windows XP was 5.1, Windows Vista is 6.0. So we see Windows 7 as our next logical significant release and 7th in the family of Windows release. But there using 6.1 for Windows 7 to ensure application compatibility.
i read that windows 7 is gonna have the same requeriments of vista 2gb ram 2ghz cpu (the real requeriments), so i don't see what's the advantage of this new kernel if this is true.
Who is MS trying to fool here...??? They are sure going to lower the number of lines in it's kernel but all he did was show us the "KERNEL", not the OS... What makes the OS is all the applications that comes with it and there was none in this presentation.
no it's not. 10.4 and 10.5 are basically differentiated by subversions, as opposed to the parent version, which is 5. The relationship between 5 and 5.1 is different from the relationship between two subversions. Apples and oranges.
And to put it in context, Windows XP is in fact based on and built from Windows 2000; as such, makes sense that it's within the same parent version (5 to 5.1 as opposed to 6.0, which denotes a full milestone and a new version)
no, real Windows NT was NT 3.1 back in early 90's, then NT 3.5 and 3.51 came, then NT 4.0 and Windows NT 4.0, than NT 5.0 which was later renamed to Windows 2000 (codename was "Memphis NT".
Eric Traut: "Arrow keys weren't on the keyboards at the time. It also doesn't know about mice."
This is complete bull. Please do some research before you make a presentation at a university.
The original 83 key PC keyboard did have arrow keys. ALL PC KEYBOARDS HAVE ALWAYS HAD ARROWS. Windows 1.0 did support mice. The problem is that VirtualPC has major issues running 1.0 (which is understandable).
why my linux kernel takes up less than 10 megs of RAM then? why windows 95 ran in 16mb of RAM with graphical interface, "network functionality" and all?
windows 95 ran in 16megs of ram USING SWAP, and if you like win95, jsut use it ;). if your linux kernel runs in 10 mb, tell me what's running at this point. cuz mine simply takes all the ram it can get to run fast
ah i run the kernel with ethernet, PPPoE, usb, ALSA sound, sata support, scsi (cdrom), framebuffer video support...uhmm i dont remember what else but its all i need..without GUI.... with a light GUI it takes like 30 or 40 mb...
i wish MS can stop adding craps, which keep increasing the storage and system resource windows uses. They should just build an extremely lightweight and efficient OS. I don't know about you guys, but I'd love it.
I'd like to switch to Linux, but unfortunately it's totally unfeasible. Basically every application I use doesn't work in it (and the Linux alternatives are pathetic) and never will due to the community's refusal to set up and adhere to any kind of broad standardisation of the major distributions (due to nerd morons with no grasp of reality, such as Stallman, and their fanboys).
to be honest i'd love a version of windows that was like the minwin cept with web browsing and a few other basic features. the bloated crap they spew out now is useless to me
Exactly. Hopefully the failure of Vista and the backlash against increasing demand on hardware and bloat is going to make them consider this. Microsoft are eventually going to be finished as far as OSs are concerned if they just keep thinking they can do whatever they like and consumers will lap it up regardless.
No, Linux is unusable crap as far as desktop applications are concerned. I would love it if the guys like Shuttleworth and Torvalds decided to hell with RMS, and the other weirdos that seem determined to keep Linux a fringe operating system on the desktop, and came up with some sort of distribution standardisation that the major players could adhere to and encourage the likes of Adobe to develop for. Until then Windows is the only realistic option.
doesn't make sense on how you just said Microsoft is more pathetic than Apple then. In my opinion, Windows is the best, so far, and that Apple can come up with more creative Ideas. more programs and games are for Windows. I don't even see why there's such thing as an Xbox, if that's what you mean, because PC games can be better, and they don't need anymore money coming in from the damn thing.
yes i have. and as you (as i assume YOU tried them too) will admit, multimedia functions like fullduplex/multitask support for soundcards, SLi/Crossfire and someother advanced graphical stuff and oveall performance suck using nice window managers. memory usage: windows can open 25 tabs in firefox WITH flash without going slow, linux fucks up as soon as you open two youtube pages on a 2004 machine. hardware support sucks and the "support" guys in the forums are arrogant assholes if a "noob" asks.
Maybe Windows won't go slow in that situation (given enough RAM) but Firefox will about lock the fuck up if you open 25 YouTube video pages. (Or were you comparing YouTube pages under Linux with Weebls-Stuff pages under Windows?)
(The main difference is that under X you can still manipulate the window, since X doesn't foist that responsibility onto the app, like Windows does.)
correct. though you'll still be able to kill it, because the rest of the OS still works. still, i definitely NEED the other stuff like 100% ASIO support, rewire (which is platform indepentent, but obviously won't work under linux for me), task handling without need to use the console, driver support for my studio interface equipment, etc etc etc. i don't say windows is actually good. on the contrary: i hated XP and since my new PC got vista i hate it even more. but still it's less problematic.
It has to be a commercial product. Linux (or alternative operating systems and open source) will never be respected until it pays its employees for the work they do.
MinWin being the base of Windows 7. HA! Windows 7 ended up being just an optimized/patched Vista. MinWin my ass.

25mb for that piece of dung! 40mb of memory! that is so lol
Google slitaz or DSL and see what they are doing with similar system resources and they include a gui!
This is riduculous! but hopefully still a step in the right direction.

Eric is a very sharp guy. Very informed and informative and no non sense BS about him.
This is the kind of OS presentation Windows has been starving for.
I for one am VERY excited for the new Windows 7 and beyond. 25mb core WHOA! 40mb of RAM? What will I do with my 4Gb? lmao

correct, thought about it too when he said :P

what a load of crap.
Windows 7 has Kernel 6.1 because its only a small "update" to vista
Vista is NT 6, right
XP is NT 5.1
2000 is NT 5
NT isnt correct so... there were NT 4.0 and earlier 3.51, 3.5 and 3.1.
They were no earlier NTs, they started back then With 3.x
Windows 3.1 was DOS based, like 2.x and 1.x and they DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING to do with NT which is talked about here...
