  • @Somai82 Yes, straight/ inline 6 AND horizontally opposed/ flat/ boxer 6 engines are all naturally perfectly balanced. V12s and H12s are also perfectly balanced since they are simply two straight 6s/ two H6s put together.

  • @Somai82 yes for a practical engine, but i8, i10,i12, v16, v12 an others can be rigged to be just as balanced, but impractical due to size and/or length, for most applications. i6 provides balance, and if sized correctly for the vehicle, great efficiency.

  • My 1963 Ford Falcon convertible has a 170 straight six in it, and if it was run at least bi-weekly it would probably last until the second coming without breaking down. The thing sat for 22 years and it started (and still runs!) with only a minor tuneup.

  • ford's in australia have straight 6's. there a 4L engine and a turbo option is avaiable.

  • Inline sixes must have a throw for each connecting rod on the crankshaft,

    whereas V-6's & V-8's have two connecting rods on each throw. This makes

    the V conviguration much more attractive. I have never really understood

    why V-4's are not used. They are beautiful sounding engines and very small.

  • @DarkHour404 yes, all supras had inline6 the 4M-E, 5-Mge,7M-GTE, 1G-GTE, 1JZ-GTE, 2JZ-GTE. Also are many of the nissan skylines, R31, R32, R33, R34 had either the RB20, RB25 or RB26. The new GT-R has a V6 (LAME! :( ) based off the 370Z.

  • @DZeze no actually the ford 300 c.u. 4.9 liter straight 6 is way better? Can your puny little skyline pull 10,000 pounds easily? I think not!

  • I would have to agree that the ford 300-6 is one of the most durable and long lived gasoline engines made, but so are all of the low-tech, low revving straight six engines designed in the 60s. A straight six can be made to fill just about any application, from powering race and sport cars to moving 20 ton cranes to and from a job site. I suppose the same could be said of a V8, but I personally consider the I-6 to be a more stout and less complicated design.

  • If it's balanced then why did you put counterweights on it?? wasn't that the upside to v12's and straight g's was the lack of a need for counterweights?

    Counter weights are needed to offset the weight of the connecting rods and such. What I meant by balanced is the significant lack of secondary harmonics, etc.

  • @TheRenalicious well yeah, but I thought that that was only with certain applications, I thought that a straight 6 or V12 was perfectly balanced and did not require the use of counterweights.

  • @thing503 Because you locally balance the engine. If the crankshaft distorts in the least, then global balancing won't work correctly.

  • I would take the older inline 6 f150's over the v8 f150's any day of the week!!

  • i hope bmw never stops making the inline 6. they are the best engines available. they sound great, too.  i have one (see my username).

  • @E34BMW535i haha yeah i love the sound of a raging inline 6, my dads 1995 f150 has a 4.9 liter strait 6, although it may not be very fast, it sure can pull A LOT of weight!! That truck hardly feels when we are pulling our 5900 lb. bobcat on our 1500 lb trailer with the bed full of scrap metal. Not to mention that engine still runs great.

  • The reason for why manufacturers dont make many inline 6 engines anymore is space and cost.

    Most cars have transversly mounted engines, and as far as i know, only volvo has placed a i6 engine transversly. V6 saves space, and is reasonably easy to mount the wrong way (transversly). Which is cheaper.

    Real shame though.

  • @jonsen2k Suzuki transversly mounted an I6 once in some weird little car they went on a joint venture with Chevrolet on, in the late 90s or early 2000s... Ah, here it is: 2000-2006 GM Magnus, A.K.A.: Chevrolet Epica, Chevrolet Evanda, Daewoo Evanda, Formosa Magnus, and Suzuki Verona (name depending on what country it was being sold in).

  • Straight six is simply the best! RB26DETT and 2JZ are only few examples of that.

  • Too bad they're limited use now they were more reliable and easy to work on and I would pay extra for inline-6 over v6

  • It's a real shame the inline-6 isn't used by many manufacturers anymore....

    Jeep has stopped the production of the inline-6 :(

    BMW is currently the only manufacturer that uses the inline-6 layout for passenger cars from what I know. (the Cummins Turbo Diesel on the Dodge Ram doesn't count)

  • Volvo does too, and Ford uses a straight-6 in a single model, although i dont remember, wich... TVR uses one too, for their T350... But that's about it... Mercedes used them until 1997-98.

  • @AWDfreak That's because they are generally too long to mount transversely in FWD applications.

  • @MrSloika Yes. Most cars these days are FWD, and an inline-6 is just too long for that...

  • @AWDfreak It isn't used because of the packaging problems with a long narrow engine. Only BMW continues to offer I-6 engines in the US, but Audi has a I-5.

  • i have a straight 6 in my 40 chevy. I agree though madman, my fathers wrangler had the straight 6. it was just incredible

  • @Servento05 it is better than a v-6 in all aspects other than dimensions required to fit it due to its self-balancing properties
