  • Johnny Mathis sings a very beautiful version of The Lord's Prayer.

  • i live by this prayer every day..even sings it..:)

  • If you love this version , here is another singer , a former police officer , Daniel Rodriguez , he sings this beautiful song with great tenderness also.. wow.. what a song!

  • One of the best interpretation , in human history.for this the Lord's prayer powerful song.

  • Turkey injure the human rights.

  • @Devranderya what does it have to do with this song?

  • One of the Giants of Philly boys! BEAUTIFUL! Mario Lanza will never be forgotten...

    Will never be forgotten...

  • Dear Mario. What a great voice.

  • This will be played at my funeral: partly because I like it, and partly to honor

    my earthly father.

  • i dont follow religion but this is beautiful and heart trembling.

  • Truly heartfelt and touching . The performance is unique and without doubt the finest. Forget your self-centered technical critics. This is true musical performance at it's very best.

  • the best rendition ! very moving, lots of passion !

  • Abba (Father) forgive us all of us, believers and non believers and rescue us from the politicians around this globe and their helpmates who are bent on destroying humanity. We pray for your coming, soon

    Pax

  • I'll say Amen to that

  • Very nice! I also like the version by Gracie Fields in "Stage Door Canteen" (1943). There are excellent quality copies of the movie on YT (americanpopclassics) and imdb with a very clear, great rendition of this song.

  • simply great...................

  • I think there is no one on this earth singing The Lord's Prayer like him, so much sincere, so much love. his singing can bring me close to the Lord. A great talent, a great voice, a great singer from God all time !

  • this guy was a MP IN THE ARMY!

  • *plays listen to reason*

ITS A WONDER WHAT YOU'LL FIND, WITH AN OPEN MIND!

  • cont. from below--I remember the host being angry about it because he was a handsome man and all the women wanted Pavoratti not him. Not that he would have acted on it as he was happily married but it was a kick against his ego, being a tall slim good looking Italian man.

  • Tucker was loyal to his wife Sara no matter what anyone says. I knew them very well and had been to their home. Same goes for Peerce who was a family man. People can say anything they want but that does not make it true. Pavoratti sang when the radio station I worked for was giving tours to SF and the guy in charge and host of the tour told me several women came up to him because they wanted to know what room Pavoratti was in! Yes- the fat man could have many beautiful Ladies if he wanted.

  • I heard Grayson at the Coconut Grove in Los Angeles sing with Howard Keel, probably in the early 70's, don't remember exactly and went up to her table later in the evening and talked with her and Keel, she was OK but the top of her voice was thin, even if she had the notes. Fenn, Malbin and Yend all sang with Lanza and all where better in the duets then Grayson who had looks and could act very well. Grayson was good in showboat with Keel the Baritone. I liked Nelson Eddy more so.

  • @sugarbist I did hear tucker many times over a period of time 13 years in house apart and in many recitals. I never heard ML live in house but knew his family and friends all said it was great voice The RT 49 Butterfly was when he was 35 and more lyric, many prefer him then and others later when it was darker, a spinto. His Lords Prayer was made in his 50's so the voice was darker compared to 49' in his Butterfly recording. I heard him in 1961 and last in 1974 3 mos before he suddenly died.

  • Noone will ever do this hymm any better. It gives me chills. 'Nuff said.

  • Like Maurice Richard in Montreal, like Bobby Hull in Chicago, Mario was truly extra special----one of the special, special few that could really "reach" people or bring them out of their seats! A few might have sung better, a few hockey players may have played better . . . but, oh, how few of either could truly stir the soul!

  • Merry Christmas Mario and everyone!

  • Mario sings with such sincerity that I feel sure he went to be with the Lord when he left this scene of time, this troubled world where he suffered so much.

  • they don't make them like him anymore, gone but will never be forgotten

  • Lanza, Tucker, Peerce, they were all GREAT.

  • Mario Lanza has the greatest tenor voice I have ever heard.

  • @zeekwolfe : I can only agree.

  • @zeekwolfe REAL AND RAW AND NATURAL AND UNTRAINED, IT CAME FROM GODS HANDS TO US ALL, MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

  • Questa preghiera la dedico a mio figlio Omar con tanto amore da mamma tua il Signore benedica e protegga la tua anima

  • Lanza possesses a reverence and deeply felt humility which are reflected in his powerful interpretation.

  • @bonnies1234567 it is that quality that i find lacking in so many others, despite the quality of their voices. bjorling was great in this respect. however, i do not believe i have ever heard pavarotti sing anything in quite the same way.

  • Stunning

  • i would like to have a copy of his recordings.

  • @artwur This is on his christmas album

  • @artwur -- There is a CD available on Amazon.com which includes other selections as well. I added one to my collection.

  • the best tenor ever .even better than caruso

  • the best tenor of all time .even better than caruso

  • the lords prayer sung by mario is the most beautiful ever recorded you dont get any better beautiful just beautiful.

  • Mario was so great because he always slightly deviated from the operatic technique. Fully operatic technique will never produce a unique and amazing singer. Mario knew that.

  • I am an atheist and have been reading some near-death experiences and then listened to this. I've been crying for the past 15 minutes uncontrollably. I'm scared I might change my mind.

  • Thank you Lord for this beautiful song of your spoken word.

  • Thx Yoni89 por darnos el gran privilegio de oir esta maravilla legendaria sin desmerecer a los demás tenores cuál de todos ellos es mejor en lo suyo y a quienes hacen posible esta tarea... congratulations...;@)

  • This is the song & singer I heard when I was I child, touched me a lot.

  • Remembering my daddy who's birthday falls today. Ernest Wilkinson 27/07/1921 - 09/05/2010.

  • Thankyou very much for uploading this as it's the song my mother took solace in when my sister passed away as a child. Even though this was before I was born I still feel a sense of loss, and it still brings my mother to floods of tears.

  • I don't know if it is the recording but I hear he is overy pitchy on many notes. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. Thank you.

  • I believe my mother took solace in Mario Lanza singing the lords prayer when my elder sister passed away as a child through complications. What better way to reflect on memories of a loved one. I am sorry I missed you my sister, but take heart in my mothers love of Mario Lanza inspiring me to become an opera singer myself

  • my dad used to cry listening to this song !

    Very moving !

    thanku for posting it !!!!!

  • i'm sorry but his pronunciation makes me laugh.... he puts in an odd "ah" at the end of words at times... i can't take him seriously because of it. sounds like he's trying-ah to be either Italian or a knee-slappin' southern Baptist minister (like the one in Stephen King's NEEDFUL THINGS) LMAO

    beautiful song though LMAO

  • @ibkristykatMario doesn't pronounce words correctly? This is straight out of the dictionary..Diction--the art of speaking clearly so that each word is clearly heard and understood to it's fullest complexity and extremity. A comment by Licia Albanese..he had everything that one needs, the voice, the temperament, and, perfect diction. If you look, there are many more that can be found as to Marios diction. So, please, go back to your Paul Potts site, and, save your comments for the uneducated.

  • @barryoderfer Just because he says "ah" at the ends of words, does NOT mean he has "Perfect Diction". I'm a spelling freak, much less a grammar freak, so I beg of you not to insinuate that I'm uneducated. Either way, I never said he didn't pronounce his words correctly - I said IT MAKES ME LAUGH and so I CAN'T TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY. Never said it was incorrect.

I don't know who Paul Potts is, but either way, learn how to read the full comment before berating someone.

  • @ibkristykat In reference to his pronunciation of the "AH"at the end of some words.I think its a singing tecnique called (giving way to the breath),The tecnique allows the column of air to flow and it achieves a better legato, keeping the throatmore open. Franco Corelli used an 'H' in front of words or phrases starting with 'A or E I'm sure your favorite tenor might have a few tricks up his sleeve unless ofcourse it's Tucker, who was a fine tenor but hit the consonants hard&rolled his R's Enjoy

  • Thankyou!

  • Maybe God must has been touched by his voice as well and took him early to be with him

  • I'm an atheist, but this singing still moves me.

  • Near to perfection ! This is what my humble opinion goes; but only God can judge if he has reached perfection in this singing ! Hope Mario can enjoy this song above !

  • The very best EVER.

  • The GREAT Lanza ! Il grande Lanza !

    Hans NL

  • Best version together with mahalia Jackson and Jim Nabors!!

  • La más bella oración de la Historia cantada por la voz varonil más cristalina y maravillosa de todos los tiempos.

  • I do not think there is a singer living today who can deliver this song with the passion Mario delivers it. It is inspirational and leaves you with a sense that is both warming and strong.Christ's message tells us we are individuals within our path of life. Mario proved that by singing this song. No one can touch him and I am yet to hear another who can sing this piece as well as him.. Even today when we play this piece. There are young people who apprieciate what they hear. That is what it is.

  • @Budgie195 you never heard Dia DiCristino sing it then! She was singing it again today, and it is amazing! I will send you her recording once she puts it on her website.

  • @Budgie195 :

Nelson Eddy sings a beautiful, reverant rendition "The Lord`s Prayer" which is available for listening on You tube. I enjoy listening to both Nelson and Mario`s renditions. Lorraine

  • My father wanted this played at his funeral. Love and miss him dearly. God bless you dad.

  • @GRAZIERS77 my grandfather wanted the same thing when he died recently.

  • Beautiful voice and music. And even more beautiful are the lyrics. And who is the author of those lyrics? That's right. Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. Praise His Holy Name!!!!!!!

  • Responding to comment of "lovemywife37" .... To JESUS CHRIST be the praises of all creation, forever ...Amen.

  • Yoni I think this is the one you sent me?

  • It's likely, yes. I don't think I have more than one recording... But recordings are often better off of youtube...

  • Why is that?

  • realmente fantastico e maravilhoso, um grande tenor, quando o ouço cantar me encho de espiritualidade!!

  • I love the bells and harp, and the strings before "give us this day", but the rest of the orchestration is too dense. It's supposed to be more intimate. I don't like his glissando on "temptation". my favorite tenor in this is Richard Tucker, and I don't usually like Tucker.

  • @wattever333

Hi! I listened to Tucker and also Leonard Warren. They are excellent, but Lanza's interpretation I feel is more humbling and inspiring throughout.

  • Yes..Warren comes on second to this one...he wold be among my favorite singers of all time...probably #2..then Jerome Hines(Bass).

  • Comment removed

  • @wattever333 His glissando on "temptation" is exquisite! The pitch movement flows well with the definition of the word itself and is a superb "build" in the progression of the song to a perfectly executed climax and resolution. What Lanza did specifically at that moment (IMHO) was difficult to accomplish with many singers because of the very fact that there was a glissando.

  • Mario Lanza had the range from arias, standards, and the inspirational "The Lord's Prayer." His devotion can be felt by us all.

  • I used to listen to Mario with my Mum when I was a young child and when Dad was working would watch his films. (They always seemed to be on a Sunday afternoon).

After my parents passing I was helping my Sister clear out the attic and found 78's and 33's of Mario that my Mum had hid.(Dad never got over WW2.). Mario had an amazing voice that was part of my early recollections and will always stay there as a comfort zone and a memory of happiy days and the promise of what was to come.

  • when did he record this?

  • Have any of you heard Frank Tenaglia singing "The Lord's Prayer?" It's on youtube and he's really fantastic!

  • I av listened 2 this since everyday since tuesday when my mam went in 2 intensive care and it makes me cry soon has he sings.get better mam I luv u.

  • Wow!

  • There was no one better. This rendition is goes right to the soul whether your a believer or not.

  • I THINK THIS IS PERFECT THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VERSION I HAVE HEARD. EVEN BETTER THAN RICHARD TUCKERS AND IF YOU LISTEN TO HIS YOU WILL SEE THE SAME OLD PEOPLE CHAMPIONING HIM REPEATEDLY . TUCKERS IS NICE BUT MARIOS IS BEAUTIFUL

  • @sugarbist -- Yes, I agree with you. Mario Lanza's interpretation is the best I have heard. It is reverent and at the conclusion, his voice becomes more intense with feeling.

  • @sugarbist YOU'RE A TASTELESS IDIOT.

  • @VinylToVideo MAYBE WE'RE BOTH TASTELESS IDIOTS.

  • @sugarbist I don't think so; I'm the one who listens to real opera singers who performed on stage over 30-50 year careers.

  • @VinylToVideo Im happy for you,This is The Lords Prayer and my remark is about this specific recording without getting into adiscussion about 0pera singer verses Hollywood singer.Tucker was a fine tenor, but I enjoy Lanza more than anyone else in the so-called (AMERICAN SONGS).I unfortunately did not have the benefit of hearing either LIVE. I was never a big Tucker fan but after hearing his early Butterfly duet(REALLY BEAUTIFUL) & some other recordings I have a better appreciation for him.

  • @sugarbist Yet I'm sure you still preferred Lanza and even Grayson to Steber. Bleh. In this case "The Lords Prayer" is sung both technically better and with more passion by a devout Jew than a lapsed Catholic.

  • @VinylToVideo Yes, I still prefer Lanza, but I never cared for Grayson although i dont find her offensive. Steber and Tucker actually give me GOOSE BUMPS in the Butterfly duet. Very beautiful .R.T. never had the Hollywood Hussies chasing him or he might have been a lapsed Jew. Ofcourse I'm making light of your comment .Enjoy

  • @sugarbist Tucker's later recording of the "Butterfly" duet with Price should give goosebumps as well.

  • @VinylToVideo Thanks

  • @skipper8257 Well it gets to my soul and I am a believer !!

  • @skipper8257 Agree. I'm a none believer but beyond the nature of this song, what it does is put me face to face with one of the many examples of the best that makind's got to offer itself. Thank you life and certainly, thank you Yoni89.

  • @skipper8257 the song penetrates through your soul...no matter who sings this.

  • Thank you so much for posting. His voice is sublime.

  • Beautiful version. Used to hear this every night at summer camp before bed. Takes me back...

  • By far the most inspiring and beautiful rendition of "The Lord's Prayer'! I have heard many different renditions over the years. None as heart felt. Lanza had such a rich sound....very powerful!

  • @gallantentry

Yes, I truly agree. I have listened to several other interpretations as well, but Lanza's is the most humble and inspiring of all, with richness and power.

  • Now I know why Elvis loved this guy

  • Amazing voice. Forever a favorite. And a sublime song on top of all that. I have this recording at home. Never get tired of listening to it.

  • bring a tear to a glass eye wonderful

  • Yes as you said Tucker's was very good but he did not record it until he was 54 years old in 1968. It was on a Christmas album with other singers.

  • simply the best

  • The GREAT Mario Lanza.

    Hans NL

  • a wonderful voice and a great hymn daitwp

  • lo maximo lo mejor que halla pasado por mis oidos

  • The Best Version of The Lord's Prayer I Have Ever heard.

Utterly Magnificent. Sung with true spirit and meaning.

  • Thanks! Amazing voice!! Simply Beautiful !!!

  • I was made to sing this all the time at school but when as you hear mario i wana cry.

  • the best redition of the lords prair that could possible be .amen

  • Parzifal .... very interesting info. Many thanks for making us aware of it.

  • fantastic

  • The composer of this wonderful piece of music had a brother named Stan who was truly a great musician. He played organ at the Alabama Theatre in Birmingham, Alabama and was one of the truly great to ever play that instrument. His life went mostly unheralded but he was a great musician. Truly gifted but lived in his brother's shadow.

  • Thankyou for this information

  • powerful indeed

  • Wonderful!

  • Becki there is something wrong with your new channel. I tried several times to answer your message just received but became impossible. They say that can be done only if you add me (again...) as a friend. I tried your previous' but is closed.

  • Doesn't matter when Lanza sang this it's the most moving rendition of this song ever recorded. listen to the crystal clear Bb just amazing. Only Tucker who was more precise and textbook perfect could come close to Mario on this one.

  • VINYLTOVIDEO GIVES THE DATE 9/51

  • Yes recorded in 1951 30 YEAR OLD LANZA, VERY FINE .

  • This is a recording from the early 50's with Ray Sinatra cond. not his last one, not even close to last his voice was darker later of course.

  • I had this recording way before he died this is not the last one.

  • I know what I think based on live concerts and recordings, sure live is different you can miss ring not coming through the same way on recording and size etc. but the sound of the voice was one of the best no doubt from what I can tell and from what those whose opinion I respect who heard him he was a lyric spinto and a great voice he choose the path he took that was his decision and brought us to opera. He did more for opera then Pavoratti way before Pavoratti without a career in opera!

  • I misspelled Grant Park below. Interesting I just had a phone call from a friend who mentioned what I sent him of Lanza which was the so well sung Vesti from 1958 in his last film he thought like I do if only he had sung more then the 3rd act of Boheme live (which he did) and the Butterfly which has not much for the tenor after act 1 and of course the operetta the merry wives of windsor, serious opera people would take him more seriously he said his voice had more warmth then Bjorling.yes true

  • No I did not but know several who did besides singers like Kirsten, Albanese , Treigle and Peerce who I all spoke to about him . I used to have dinner with his mother in law every so often since she lived in Evanston near my parents home in Chicago and I met Weiler whn I lived in cal. and stayed with his parents so I knew the kids very well. Sadly I never heard him live in Concert of course when he sang at great park here in 1947 I was 6 and his Marshall field concert was in 1949.

  • Beautiful. Beautiful.

    Thank you for the post.

    Cameo9330

  • Oh, wow. That is a performance for all time.

  • I am 52 years old and I have been listening to this song that Mario Lanza has shared to us all. This song is simply fantastic, simple yet so powerful

Every day by song I have been encouraged to live my life beautifully and peacefully.

Have a blessed day to All , always

    Budi Soehardi

  • A singing prayer full of religiosity, holy sentiment and the utmost devotion. His magnificent voice gives an even greater dimension if that was possible to an already most splendorous prayer.

  • He was the geatest American tenor, he was my favorite I have always loved his voice now he is with God in heaven I will remember him.

  • can you believe this man thought he couldn't sing very well- fantastic talent

  • Recorded September 29, 1951.

  • When I was 9 I saw toast of new orelans, 1950 it had just come out blew my young mind and at 10 the great caruso, 1951 and that was my turn on and love of opera that led me to even stay at his parents home (cocozza's)for a short time in the early 60's so you can say I owe Lanza for that love of opera as does Domingo, Jose C and probably Richard Leech as far as opera singers go. I wonder how many more?

  • Did you ever have the good fortune to hear Lanza in person? Given that you've heard so many fine tenors and have commented on their performances insightfully, I wonder what you would have thought of Mario at his best:)---

  • Oh I see what you mean, thanks--- yes as agile. His voice was darker and heavier by 54 of course, like tenors get over 50 unless they where pure lyrics like say Kraus or Tagliavini etc. Caruso really sounded at the end at 48 very Baritonal but of course still a great tenor, he smoked quite a lot you know.

  • Yes I agree with you, so mario was 34, recorded in 1955. His version in Because your mine was 1952 and was a fine recording, slightly different.

  • Ooh, no I was just giving an example, you said early 30's in comparison to someone in his 50's- was saying Tucker's voice was as agile and beautiful in his 50's as it was in his 30's. Thus I think comparison can be allowed. :P There's no date on my recording- but I'd guess around 55, yes.

  • PEARLMUTH3:MARIO was 38 when this recording of the lords prayer was done.Just 3 weeks before his death!

  • German--you cannot compare a 54 year old man to this man in his early 30's both great

  • Tucker was in as good a voice at 54 as he was at 34, in my opinion. :P

  • This has been giving me goosebumps for many years now :)

  • The best version hands down. :D

  • This is absolutely amazing...what a voice. One of my favorites was Tucker's commercial recording, but this is just as good, if not better. I'll try to post the Tucker one as a response tomorrow.

  • Renata Tibaldi, leading operatic soprano of the 20th century, visited Lanza on set of Serenade in December 1955,later attended a screening of the musical highlights from the film. "Tebaldi was so overcome by Mario's singing that she was moved to tears," recalled musical director Ray Heindorf. She spent an evening at Lanza's home, where the two singers sang together. Her response to hearing his live voice was unequivocal. "Yours is the finest natural tenor voice I have ever heard," she told Lanza.

  • Hello Chris99103 ... I wanted to hear Mario sing The Lord's Prayer again as my evening prayer today. I can imagine how overpowering it must have been for Renata Tibaldi to sing together with Mario Lanza. When I hear his complete soul sing this prayer and I remember how holy God is, my heart is also moved to tears. There are not many singers and songs that can do that to me. I appreciate your comments very much.

  • The greatest natural tenor voice of the last century...and there is a lot of proove from opera celebrities.Gedda said 1958 after the concert in the Royal Albert Hall in England. "It's the greatest tenor voice I've ever heard.". Licia Albanese (Metropolitan Soprano)recorded in 1955 the Act III duet Dio Ti Giocondi from Otello with Lanza and she said more than 20 years later. "He was fantastic! I rank him next to Caruso. Next comes Di Stefano, then all the others.Just to mention a few.

  • The last picture refers to Mario Lanza performing in the opera 'Pagliacci' by Ruggero Leoncavallo. According to Wikipedia, the opera 'Pagliacci' was and remains one of the most popular works in the operatic repertory. For a modern rendition see on Youtube v=sUe2OnXIBEg . In my opinion this figure qualifies the art of Lanza without offense.

  • Thanks so much dies1domini for your information that sheds an entirely new light on the last picture. Now that I know the signifigance of Mario Lanza's performance in "Pagliacci", this picture is in fact a

"grand finale" to this wonderful video.

It's good to get more knowledge and all the facts about any subject - including Mario Lanza.

  • i would have loved to go and see him in concet

i think his brilliant thanks for video.

  • amazing rendition of the piece

except the slide show ended with the worst possible picture. haha

  • Yes ... a better picture at the end would be more respectful.

  • AMEN!

    Evy Of Canada

  • Who arranged the song for Choir and Solo?

  • Wonderful song fantastic voice No other tenor or singer could give a better rendition The last part is sung in such a profound way that those who are listening feel inside the same deep religious sentiment of the very prayer he is singing

  • what a voice died too young daitwp

  • who wrote this?

  • Albert Hay Malotte (1895-1964) wrote this in 1935.
