  • the only eheims that are made in germany today, shame you eheim for going chinese

  • Great video, much appreciated.

  • The fx5 has 20l filtervolym and the eheim 6.5l... am i missing something here?

  • @Grazk 14 liters of that is sponge. Im talking empty available space for biological media.

  • @uarujoey ah well you may be right there, I have 2 of them for my 160G and its always cristalclear and thats with some messy fish ( 4 oscarfish and 1 datnoides microlepsis, so far) love your videos! liked you on facebook and commented there a short while ago. Thanx for the quick reply :)

  • @Grazk Nothing wrong with the FX5. Its a great filter, but too much of the giant filter is sponge. I would have stuck with the FX5 if it had held more media, or at least still own a few. I was initially drawn in by its size and GPH. It didnt take me long to realize its just a huge mechanical filter. Thanks for the like on FaceBook! Feel free to show off your tanks on there if you want to! Or even help with some of the questions i get! Check out my site while your at it.

  • Great Video, very informative since i own and use a Fluval 306, after watching this i have now purchased an Eheim 2075 (G160) Professional Filter and thrown the other Filter straight on eBay! cheers mate!

  • my filter will not prime and i followed you're instructions exactly. is the height of my stand or the distance between the filter and the bottom of my tank affecting this? my stand is very short and my filter sits 4 inches below the tank. my outflow tube is much longer than my inflow tube... any ideas why the filter is not priming?

  • @coltonslick try filling the canister with water. plug it in, and suck on the out put until water starts to flow. That will work for sure.

  • Why did you decide to use a canister filter after setting up the filter with the K1 media? It looked like it was off towards the end of the video (the K1 tank I mean). Did you find it wasn't working to your liking?

  • @Pickle3808 The fluidized bed was turned off for the video. Just to lower noise for a minute. The Eheim was added to the tank for extra mechanical filtration for the time being. The main reason was so i could use it on another tank if i ever needed to, and already have a fully cycled filter.

  • @uarujoey I see. So the fluidized bed is sufficient biological AND mechanical filtration for that tank? It is freshwater correct? No other filtration is required?

  • @Pickle3808 Yes, it is actually more than enough filtration(both mech and bio) In fact, a fluidized bed is easily one of the most efficient types of filtration you can have. And yes, this was on a freshwater aquarium. Watch my video on how to build a fluidized bed, i explain everything there is to know about them.

  • Will i have to much water flow with a Eheim professional 3 2075 in a highly planted 75 gallon. I understand this is a matter of opinion but i was wondering about you're thoughts on this?

  • @coltonslick You can control the flow on it if needed. You can also direct half the flow towards the surface, and half downwards with the spray bar. It wouldnt be an issue.

  • Thanks for doing the video, i've got a fluval 405 that i'm really not to happy with (doesnt really keep the water crystal clear and when its been turned off for maintance you get loads of 'gunk' returning into the tank due to the ribbed pipes);

How have you been getting on with the 2075, i've been reading a few reviews where people have had problems with leaks..? Would you say that the water clarity is better with the 2075.

  • @jenko740 Every canister filter has the potential to leak. Search any canister filter available, and you'll find the same issue. Its really not an issue though, its simply something that can happen on any canister filter.

  • I find that eheim is not as good in lower levels of water example I have a 26 gal and i switched to a fluval 205 I think it works much better then the eheim and the eheim actually had broken down on me :/

  • @jean9910 Thats possible with any filter. I have had every filter hagen makes, in every size... i had problems with some, and not wither others. That doesnt mean hagen (fluval) canisters are bad, it simply means i had a few problems with a couple. So far, my experience with Eheim, has shown me a huge difference in the 2 brands. While i love fluval filters(still own a few), i definetly like eheim more.

  • why is there no carbon in the filter

  • @timothyk8 Carbon is a waste of space. Use as much biological media as possible. Carbon is great for removing meds, but thats about it. It does keep your water clear, but so does a well cycled filter with plenty of biological media.

  • Thanks for all the instructions. Great video. This seems like the filter to get. I don't see why I would need a Pro 3e with all the electronic bells an whistles, this should do what you need.

  • i tried this one in a cichlid tank it works ok i guess, not the best filter but you cant compare it with the Fluval FX5 yea the FX5 cost more but its much better in the end and worth the money thats what happened with me and still happy with it.

  • how much is a good price for one of these pumps and/or i would like to know any sites you would suggest ordering from? thanks joey!

  • @coltonslick 250-300 is typically what i see them retail for.

  • can i attach this to my fish tank with 2 other filters in the tank?

  • @destr0yer41 I dont see why not.

  • I have had Eheim for over 10 years and LOVE IT! Only thing different is that I add more filter media (cotton) to the top canister, charcoal in the middle and ciramic in the bottom. These 3 work awesome together in a Cichlid tank, keeps the water perfect and I only have to do water changes every 3 months in my 110 gallon

  • Where do you buy those canister filter in Canada ? Ho! and your videos are awesome keep up the good work. Thanks.

  • i have a 120xH gallon aquarium.. and i also bought the ehiem pro g160.. i saw how u put it on the tank with the input and output... does it neccessarily have to be close together like that or can i distance them like 4 ft apart...... also u know how you have the output above the water a little?? would it make a difference if it was completely submerged?

  • @crazykyle401 The further apart the better. I only set this one up as an example. You can have the output below the surface as well. Try to create at least some surface agitation though.

  • Hey, I am wanting one of these for my tank I have two yellow bellied slider turtles and they can be very messy. Is there anyway I can get the return to go lower into the tank? My tank is only 3/4 ish full and I want the return water to go back into the tank with no splash/noise. Could I fit some sort of tubing to the return pipe to make it lower? Any ideas? Jay :D

  • @jaygodsmark Yes, you could add tubing to lower the noise.

  • Comment removed

  • My Jebo 829 is rated at 400 gph, but it uses 35 watts of power. I've only had to replace the impeller in the 2 years I've owned it. This Eheim Ultra G160 has way more capacity and bio media than my Jebo 829 though.

  • why dont you put the fluval AND the eheim together in the tank

  • Great video - you have explained everything well, and speak well. I enjoyed it and shall check out your other vids.

  • I was on the ropes with a filter purchase and purchased this one after reading reviews and watching ur vid. Did u take down ur fluidized bed filter? If so how come? Good review of the Eheim 2075 ( G 160), the best I've found.

  • @NSPirate12 Glad you liked it. I didint take down the fluidized bed.

  • 13:00 I use it between the spray bars. so i have 2 units OVEr the surface to creat movement on the surface an then comes the L-Bow that leads down into the water, where the third sprabar unit is installed. that one gives flow inside the water.

  • How does the G160 compare to the EHEIM professionel 3 2080 XL or XLT

  • @jambarino1121- My Eheim Pro 3 2073 leaked about 3 gallons onto my floor. From what I understand, there was an issue with the primer assembly (the prime pump seal) on the units that were manufactured in 2010 and prior. I bought my filter (eheim pro 2073) in April of 2010. Eheim sent me a replacement pump head. If you purchased your filter in 2010 I would be very careful. If you have your tank on hardwood floors, I would definitely keep an eye on it.

  • hey man nice filter, i got fed up with my fluval g3 clogging up every 6 days... so i "upgraded" to the eheim pro 3 - 250.. so far its working a treat

  • @MyFatty69 Nice upgrade! You'll find that the Eheim does not clog up nearly as fast.

  • @MyFatty69

Those Fluval's have had many many problems. Your filter upgrade was an excellent choice. Eheim's rock. Top quality...

  • Joey are you concerned with this filter leaking eventually like some of the Eheim pros have been known to do?

  • @jambarino1121 not at all. Any canister has the potential to leak. Eheim canisters are rated 1 world wide for a reason. While some may leak, it is less likely on an Eheim, than any other brand out there right now.

  • I have this filter and i am wery happy with this filter :)

  • You said it's an upgrade from the fx5.. Not totally as yes, the main thing is amount of media. But you forgot to mention that the fx5 has over twice the flow rate than this. This is just as important, as you could have 100 litres of media running through an air line. You have to consider water flow. Overall this looks like a cool filter, I've never had ehiem but would definitely like to try one. By the way all of your videos are great, I like doing DIY videos too.

  • @TheCoolPickles The FX5 is rated for a 400gal tank at 925gph. Yet only holds 5.9 liters of media. This means, that the water is simply rushing past its very small amount of media it holds, giving very little contact time with the bacteria. The Eheim holds far more media, with a slower GPH, giving the water far more contact time with the bacteria, making it more efficient. Not enough space on youtube to continue my point here, but feel free to join my forum for further discussion..

  • @uarujoey your forum won't let me post for some reason. this is my reply.

If the FX5 wasn't capable of giving the bacteria enough time to act on the water, then why would the product be designed? and also why would it be rated for so big tanks? For Fluval to say that that filter can run on a 400 then there has to be proof of that. Also what about people with sumps who have bio media in them, they can be running 4x faster and they have no problem.

  • @TheCoolPickles You have to start a new thread to post this. The FX5 is simply over rated for its tank size. The GPH vs the amount of media would not be practical for a 400gal tank, it simply could not keep up. Sumps have a MUCH larger media capacity, which can handle a much larger flow rate. Thats not a good comparison though. Im simply stating that the FX5 media capacity, with its GPH, could never handle a 400gal tank. Its best suit to a 130gal. Where as the G160 can handle 160gal no problem.

  • @uarujoey I did start a new thread and it wouldnt let me post it..

The fx5 may not be able to keep up a 400 gal but that ehiem would never do on my 180 gal not even on my 125 gal because i was running a 405 on my 125 and it was terrible, so with less flow rate it would just leave everything on the bottom, like my 405 did. So if I had a 160 and had to chose the fx5 or ehiem I would have to choose the fx5 because it still has a lot of media with over double the flow rate?

  • @TheCoolPickles to use the ehiem on a 160 it would require at least 2 circulator pumps to get things moving around in there..

  • @TheCoolPickles That would be useful yes. I have been referring to biological capabilities of these filters the whole time. From the sounds of your last post, your judge on how well they polish the water. If comparing the two that way, then yes, the FX5 wins. Its one big sponge filter. Im refferring to the filters ability to host the largest colony of bacteria. The G160 wins there. It simply has more media room, meaning more surface area for the bacteria. Water polishing is an after thought.

  • @uarujoey Yeah, I get you. but if I wanted to I could take out 1 or two of the rings of sponge and fill that with bio-media too, that would work at my sponges don't get very dirty any way, I clean them every 2 weeks - 1 month. I know this is random but if it got to the point where there wasn't enough biological media in the filter I could just take some of the sponges out. Also.. The sponge its self will hold a lot of bacteria, and that isn't accounted for in this video.

  • Could you setup a canister filter to just do mechanical filtration and run it to your fluidized bed and then back into the tank, and how would you go about that, so you didnt end up with a pond in your room? Oh and are u scrapping your fluidized bed for this tank, and if so why, did you run into issues with it, im trying to see if theres a video of when u changed from the bed to the fluval, cant find it, maybe u say why in that one, lol.

  • @PhoenixRajoNight The fluidized bed is not being removed. I am keeping it on this tank. There is no way to set up a canister filter the way you would like to.

  • Great video as usual Joey, your videos have provided me a great deal of information as I'm upgrading from a 29 to a 75 gallon hap and peacock tank.

    Can't wait!

    Cheers man.

  • i dont want to go aver $180 what canister do u recommend for a 125 gallon?

  • i would b putting it on a 125 gallon tank, is it quiet?

  • @HobbyKing1000 That should be fine yes. They can be quiet. But i find any debris around the motor can cause some noise. I also find the XP motors age fast. (impeller wares out quickly)

  • yes its xp3 any good?

  • @HobbyKing1000 I dont mind them. Im not a fan of their construction, but a pretty good canister.

  • im getting API rena canister filter for 175 gallons, heard anything about them?

  • @HobbyKing1000 Yup, owned a few before.

  • @uarujoey so are they good, and was it the one for 175 gallons, i think its the 1000

  • @HobbyKing1000 If you are reffering to the rena XP line, i have had the XP2 and 3

  • Joey, when you say that this new filter will "save you money in the long run" I can't help but think that with a power difference of just 5watts you'll be about 139years old before you've offset the cost of the new filter by the energy you have saved! Nice vid though!

  • @mrcoogs86 True. Energy savings would still be there though. Every dollar counts. The fact that this filter comes with ALL media as well, saves a ton of money too. Compared to my 405, where i had to buy all my media separate. The difference in the cost for me, with these two canisters is $40. The Eheim costing $40 more. BUT, to fill the 405 with media, cost me about $50. So i would actually save $10 overall of startup cost alone.

  • Is that canister alone enough for that tank?

  • @sunamii1080i Yes, we have to keep in mind that this filter holds 6 liters of media! It could handle the stocking on this tank size with ease.

  • Dont u think u shud've placed the intake and spraybar on the opposite sides of the tank, for moer effective filteration and water Flow????????

  • @myforbiddenme That would not be possible on this tank. It is 4 feet long, with a 12" thick background for the filtration to either go threw or around. I simply did not have enough hose to run it as you mentioned. On a more conventional set up, that would have been an option.

  • Is just that canister alone enough for that tank?

  • Eheim is the best!

  • @ThereThereTBKON Agreed!

  • Great video.

  • @zakartaz Thank you.

  • i LOVE eheim, everything i buy, heater, filter, etc its all eheim... i just love it ^^

  • @barrowscasper12 Then your going to LOVE my next video!!! Stay tuned, it will be worth the wait!

  • WOW, really impressed with eheim quality. Really not your average cheap external filter which i've brought.

  • @SouIessSpirit I completely agree!

  • Why aren't you using that sump that you made for that tank? Is it to noisy for you ?

  • @Ericec4126 Im still using that sump. i only shut it off for the video. I wanted to try and capture the sound of the Eheim running, but it was too silent.

  • Nice Video Joey !!

  • @freekie365 Thank you!

  • Thumbs up Joey very informative video as always

  • @bolly12345 Thanks Marc. Im glad you enjoy my videos content and see them as informative. I try to make sure the videos i do contain all the information i can pack into them, even if they do end up running a bit long.

  • thumbs up for u buddy...... your videos r very detailed and informative keep it up

  • Hey Joey, Thanks for all the great video's!! I copied your exact design of the plywood tank build. It is not complete trying to afford the liquid rubber. My question is, would this filter in the video be fine as the only filter? I plan on doing fresh water sting rays as well. I notice you make all your filters, but you also have a canister as well.

  • fluval, sunsun and eheim (new model) seem to copy each other design. They all have the same concept and design. They only that making them different from each other is PRICE!

  • @asiandude666 Not really. Eheim is superior design and always has been. Better quality.

  • @valdezorbust Eheim is better ..yes!

Owning all three canister, I see no difference expect design, GPH, media, and Cost.

  • @asiandude666 All three will be good choices for someone. I know the Eheim has very good resale value and customer support.

  • I HAVE THE SAME SHIRT!!! Hahaha sorry

  • @TheToanduong Did your GF pick yours out too? lol

  • Wow! Ur a beast!

  • @TheToanduong lol.. thanks!

  • why have you stopped using your moving beed filter ?

  • @martyb0y1981 Im using the moving bed and the canister now. Video shows the sump behind the tank right now. Just until i get it all moved around.

  • @uarujoey yeah I seen the sump but it wasn't running so I thought you had stopped using it lol

  • @martyb0y1981 Just for the video, to keep it quiet while i filmed. lol

  • @uarujoey lol I usually turn off my air pumps

  • I thought u had a sump on that tank but it is a sick filter

  • @95mnbvcxz95 I do still have the sump. Im running both now.

  • great video joey... i think i need one of those lol

  • @dirtdrag Stay tuned until Monday, and that just might happen!!!

  • Where did you get this filter from?

  • @whyspyder The filter is from Eheim. Several retailers carry this line.

  • Beautiful tank.

  • @MrAznPride501 Thank you very much!
