Remember, if you're going to blame anyone, blame Michael Crichton (Writer of the original Jurassic Park novel and The Lost World). He kinda sorta didn't really focus on the human element. It was more about mixing technobabble with awesomeness. Don't worry, the Lost World novel was crap, as well.

The way that the movie starts with the "Saltopuses" is actually the way the first book started. Although, the whole thing is: Hammond claims "She's all right" at the start of the movie. So, yes, that scene does seem kind of stupid.

In the book, the equivalency would have been "Compies." They also stated in the book, they'd only attack SMALL or CRIPLED creatures. So, would they attack something that stands 5 times their height and is able to fight back? No, clearly not.
