i have never heard Dessay sing anything in which I thought she sounded shrill. This is an exception. I do not care for the vocal production she is attempting in this production. It would have sounded fine without even pushing it. This makes me worry about her upcoming roll in Traviata at the met.
This was a nice approach towards Dramatic Territory, but she should stick with lighter roles....not a Dramatic Coloratura, and hardly a Lyric Coloratura...she's a Pure Coloratura, which are rare today.....nonetheless I love her interpretation
No one would say that this aria had "too many notes" if they could hear Natalie sing it! lol. It's really amazing that she can make all of these runs seem full of meaning. She's one of the best actresses out there.
can someone explain to me how come there seem to be two versions of this aria??? Dessay sings one version but deutekom and sumi jo sing it with different lyrics...other words.....always in german but the last two lines are different.....how can this be? and which of the 2 is the original?
she's a very talented singer, she may not have the power that so commonly defines a dramatic soprano, but she has a LOT of other talents which she uses to her advantage in order to be able to pull off these more dramatic roles.
I saw her in Traviata this summer, and while she undeniably smaller (both in size and voice) than say Gruberova (some would argue the definitive Violetta) she gave a heart wrenching and standing ovation worthy performance. It's what makes her one of the best.
maybe definitive was a strong word, but Gruberova is absolutely one of the best, and more iconic of the last 50 years.
I suppose Violetta is one of the many "definitive" roles that La Divina still holds. I regret now placing Gruberova, however talented she may be, in that spot.
@doremicde it's a coloratura aria, just for a dramatic coloratura voice as opposed to Ms. Dessay's lyric coloratura voice. But there is always some crossover as singers often don't wish to be too limited in their repertoire. Similarly, a dramatic coloratura soprano like Diana Damrau also sings some lyric coloratura roles from time to time and is venturing into light lyric soprano territory as well.

Operagirl81, I agree 100%. This is really trashy; especially the dress... her german is really bad too. (She should stick to french text.
I understand why she was on surgery with voice cord. Nobody can sing this and others coloratur roles same strength! I think better to save the singers voice, I dont mind less quility, then many singers in the surgery departments of the hospitals!!!!
I love the drama that she puts in the aria. This is amazing for the audience, but as a singer myself, that was killing her voice. No wonder the surgeries, growths in her chords, etc.
@kathleenbattlefan Indeed it is. It's the same way with Kathy's approach, them both are extremelly beautifull and perfect from the technique point of view, but they're just too much for their little angelic voices.
I think everybody's forgetting a crucial point. She's performing this for an audience not for us on youtube. Things that come across as over the top or forced on camera aren't necessarily so when you're watching from the balcony of a huge theater. And while singers may look down on vocal overuse, I would rather watch a fabulous Dessay for 15 years than a mediocre Dessay performing Sutherlandian farewells way past her prime. I wish more singers had the courage to lay it all out there.

This is a terrible rendition of Martern Alle Artern. vocally she doesnt have the weight in the voice at all and at times sounds like a chicken. Her German is all over the place and the her added coloratura and fioratura is out of style for dramatic Mozart. bad Choice for this role.
I don't want to argue with you about her technique for neither of us would give in, I suppose, but her German is certainly NOT all over the place. It's in fact excellent. This I know for sure, and anyone who says something else is simply wrong, sorry.
For me this is a mixed performance. I don't think Dessay has the vocal weight, or low notes for Konstanze and the more dramatic sections sound pushed. On the other hand, the coloratura is impeccable, some of the top notes are beautiful, and her interpretation is full of fire and passions.
